In case
if our readers are still unfamiliar with AVULSED, let’s start
from a
short ‘history lesson’…
- AVULSED started back in January ’92 and since then we’ve released three demos, one split 12”, a 7”Ep, a mini CD, two albums and a remixes CD. We’ve done two European tours, one with SINISTER (’96) and other with INCANTATION & DEEDS OF FLESH.
Have you
already completed the recording of your second CD, “Stab
Wound
Orgasm”? Did it really take place in Sunlight Studio and, if yes, what
are you impressions of the Tomas Skogsberg’s work?
- Yes, we
finished the recordings of our new album, but it wasn’t at
Sunlight
but at Spacelab in Germany, because we didn’t want to have that typical
Sunlight sound in our guitars. We’re 100% satisfied with the production
of the new album, because we keep our own sound and the produciton is really
powerful!! The mastering was done by james Murphy in California, and the
CD is out now!!
“Cybergore” was the latest release from AVULSED… surprisingly appearing as a remix of “Eminence In Putrescence” CD! Was it FEAR FACTORY who inspired you to bring yourselves to such a step?
- Yes, it was the first FEAR FACTORY mini CD “Fear Is The Mindkiller” what inspired us. Since that MCD was released, we always had in mind to do something similar, but it wasn’t until ‘97/’98 when we finaly got the chance. However, “Cybergore” was just an experiment between an album and another and never meant a change in our musical direction. “Cybergore” is a misture between our traditinal death metal vocals & guitars with pounding techno beats. The result was surprising for most of people, specially open-minded ones and many people liked it!!
One more
question regarding “Cybergore” goes for it’s song titles.
Basically,
all of them are the same as on “Eminence…”, although a bit… erh, let’s
say ‘miscontrued’. I wonder if it was meant as a joke or what?
- Yeah, it was kind of a mistake. You know, we didn’t want to fool anybody with it trying to make it lok like a new album or something. Anyone that had our previous album could immediately notice that the titles are just the same, but changed in a more humorous way.
And
the last one concerning this quite excellent CD. “Cybergore” possesses
undoubtedly amazing cover art, which fits it’s musical contents more than
perfectly. Who came with such an excellent concept? Also it might be interesting
to figure out who’s the author… Joe Petagno, I assume?
- Mmmm…?? Well, the whole concept of the cover & design was mine!! I found that picture in a scientific magazine and then I added some kind of blood in one side and added the logos, nothing else. I like this cover, because, as you say, it fits!! Nodoby can really say what it is. Some says it’s an insect, but in fact it’s just a lead with some water drops…
Let’s talk a bit about “Eminence In Putrescence”… Are you still pleased with that effort? How many copies have you managed to sell so far?
- Yes, we’re pleased with that album so far, but when we compare it to the new album, it looks like just a demo. The production was quite poor… but well, if we don’t compare it to the new CD, I think it’s a good piece of death metal and many people (most who have heard it) like it and helped us a lot!! We have sold like 3.000 copies without the cassette versions in Malaysia, Poland, Mexico & Chile!!
The aforementioned
CD also includes BARON ROJO’s cover (“Resistire”),
the one
which sounds quite exciting, I must admit! Why did you decide to pay tribute
exactly to this band and cover exactly this song? Furthermore, will “Stab
Wound Orgasm” feature any cover tunes?
- We decided
to cover BARON ROJO because it’s one of the very first
Spanish heavy
metal bands and undoubtely the most famous ever. We didn’t want to do the
typical SLAYER, BLACK SABBATH or BATHORY cover and instead we did a heavy
metal cover sung in Spanish. Here in Spain everybody loves this cover!!
For our 2nd album we wanted to include a W.A.S.P. cover, but we finally
opted for not including any cover, only AVULSED songs!!
Getting
back in time even more… Both, split 12”LP with ACID DEATH and
“Carnivoracity”
MCD appear as difficult of access items now, therefore please tell us few
words regarding these efforts…
- Well, the 12” is impossible to find actually, but the MCD is quite easy to find, at least through REPULSE. The 12"”was just our 2nd demo and the MCD is the re-release of our 7”EP with the same title plus 8 bonus live tracks.
I bet most of our readers own Repulse Records’ version of “Carnivoracity” (at least me), but what about the original MCD unleashed through M.M.I. Records? As far as I know, it doesn’t include those bonus live tracks, right? Are there any more differences?
- Well, as I said, the original version of “Carnivoracity” was released as a 7”EP format, not MCD, by the German label M.M.I.. It was released on clear vinyl and featured pictures with the old guitar player & drummer. On the MCD version has full colour cover instead of just b/w and includes 8 live songs as bonus.
Such question as why did you choose M.M.I. Recs and why did you leave it later seems quite natural, don’t you think?
- Well, it was M.M.I. who offered us to do this 7”EP, so we accepted. It was never our intentino to continue on that label. Just a 7”EP!! Unfortunately that label died few years after that…
Is there anything you’d like to tell me (us) when it comes to the lyrics of yours? Is it your regular gore-stories or everything’s quite the contrary and you try to be more poetic?
- Our lyrics are meant to be disgusting, horrific, annoying, macabre… we don’t want to give any special message with it, and they’re not in a poetical way, but more in a current way of expression. They’re more focused in a humoristic way, most of the lyrics have some sarcasm, but others are based on true stories.
If
I’m not mistaken, you’ve been playing live at such ‘hot’, ‘exotic’ countries
as Chile, Argentina and Uruguay… What was the crowd’s reaction? Do you
have any special memories of that tour?
- Well, I must say you’re mistaken… we never played in such countries. We’re going to play in Venezuela next week and I’m sure the crowd will be extreme!!
Proceeding with the ‘gigs’ subject, I’d like to display my interest in your impressions of playing live with CRADLE OF FILTH…
- We have played twice with C.O.F. and I must say it wasn’t such an experience for us. The only thing we wanted was to play in front of so many people, you know. Personally they’re totally cold. They never talked to anybody and specially Dani was quite arrogant person.
Besides singing in AVULSED, you also take part in CHRIST DENIED, some kind of ‘unholy’ death / grind act with one full-length CD behind them… What did you decide to work with one more band? Did it happen simply because you couldn’t content all of your arrogances being a member of AVULSED…?
- I actually
have one more band called ANAêMIA and it’s pure grind!! I just did
CHRIST DENIED with a friend because we wanted to play pure brutal death
metal the U.S. way. It’s just a project band and we naver play live or
anything like that. With AVULSED we’re 5 members with different opinions
and our musical style is more varied, but with CHRIST DENIED we play only
brutal death and nothing else. Being only two members, everything’s easier!!
The ANAêMIA project is formed by the same mambers as CHRIST DENIED,
but we play pure grind in the vein of NASUM, TERRORIZER, MULE SKINNER,
DEFECATION, NAPALM DEATH… but faster!! We’ll have our first CD out through
a new Belgian
label.
“David
Nigger – guitars and bass; session drums by Frank Sinatra and
Julio
Iglesias”… Heh, strange lineup! Can you tell me, why ‘nigger’?? By the
way, the latter names sound somehow familiar to my ears, ha ha ha…!
- “Nigger” is because everybody calls David as “Negro” which means “Black” colour in Spanish due to his dark skin tone. He didn’t want to be known as Negro, so instead of putting David Black, he chosed Nigger, which sounds more cool!! As for the drummers, well, we’re tired of these bands who put real names to their drummers trying to make people think that there’s a human drummer and not a machine, but using these names (Julio Iglesias & Frank Sinatra) everybody would know it’s just a joke. Unfortunately, Frankie died last year but we asked Ricky Martin to play drums for our next album, and he accepted!!
CHRIST DENIED’s “… Got What He Deserved” was brought upon the withered daylight by Gulli Recs, the fact which really surprised me since I knew that you’re the mastermind behind your own label, Repulse Records… Why did you choose another company to release that CD?
- Simply because I didn’t want to release everything through my own label. AVULSED is enough. By the way, we did a 7”EP before through MORBID REC.!! Our next album will be out on QABALAH PROD. in the year 2.000!!!
Are you going to keep on working with CHRIST DENIED?
- Yes, we recorded two songs in summer ’98 for a split 7”EP with Japanese grinders MASSGROUND, but after they did split-up, we asked MORTICIAN to do it and they accepted, but in summer ’99 they told us they couldn’t do it and then we asked Belgian ABORTED and they accepted, so before our 2nd album we’ll have a split 7”EP!!
Such topics as nationalism and satanism / heathendom are often being discussed nowadays when it comes to the extreme metal scene. Please, share with us your view on each of the afore-cited subjects.
- I don’t
really care about these subjects. It’s fine by me if anyone
wants to
talk about that, but I don’t give a fuck!! The only thing I hate is Nazi
& racist ideologies.
And finally, what is your favorite band at the moment?
- I have many favourite bands, some of them are SUP, DYING FETUS, NILE, THE KOVENANT, STRAPPING YOUNG LAD, ANGEL CORPSE and many others…
Oh shit, it wasn’t the last question! But here it comes anyway… “Cybergore” features a song called “Addicted To Red Bull”, so let me wonder if you’re really a freak on Red Bull beer…?? (just kidding)
- Yeah, all
band members in AVULSED are great drinkers of Red Bull!!
Really!!
But it’s not a Beer!! It’s an energetic drink!! We use to drink Red Bull
mixed with Whiskey every time we can when we hang out!! RED BULL rules!!
Also JAGERMEISTER!!
