The BLOT MINE package I've got, had no bio or anything like that, consequently it looks like you'll have to tell us few words in regards to your band's past… and I bet, it won't be that hard, since BLOT MINE seems to be a young band to me.
- BLOT MINE was formed in the fall of 1995 by: Thorn - bass guitar, Thunaraz - guitars and Zathanel - drums and percussion, all former SETHERIAL members which decided to leave that band due to personal matters. The band rehearsed a while before recruiting Steril Vwreede as a vocalist and lyricwriter. The highly acclaimed demotape "Kill For Inner Peace" was recorded in November 1996 and released in the beginning of 1997.The responsewithin the realms of the underground scene was truly overwhelming. Mainly appreciated for the pure hate, aggression and professionality which sums up BLOT MINE’s music in a rather simple but fair way. In September 1997 Athel. We completed the line-up as a second guitarist, bringing BLOT MINE even more strength and the will and capacity to go far. In June 1998 BLOT MINE entered Los Angered Recording for a recordingsession that resulted in a full-length CD entitled "Porphyrogenesis", later on released through Near Dark Productions in 1999.
What about “Porphyrogenesis” CD? How do you view it today and, furthermore, when will it’s follow-up be available?
- I consider "Porphyrogenesis" to be a very good album. The material wasn’t stressed out as it was written over a very log period of time so there are a lot of things going on in the songs that might not strike the listener during the first listenings. The production turned out Ok and the shit that ended up on tape sounds basically as intended. So all in all, We are very pleased with how this release came out and the response has only been positive cant say when the follow up will be released but the actual recording was done in January and April in The Abyss. The soundpicture differs a bit from how "Porphyrogenesis" sound but this is just another step in the right way for us in order to develop our sound.
Let me wonder what kind of language you have used composing lyrical part for “Dumu – Abzu – Ke”? Sumerian, I assume…?
- That`s correct. Vwreede who does the lyrics found it easier to use Sumerian as the topics that these songs deal with don’t have any correct translation to any other languages.
- The albumtitle "Porphyrogenesis" means "to be born at the exact time and location where the Ruler of the universe has been prophesied to be born." This is also illustrated in the album cover and the text to "Shadows From High Hell".

- You could say that this quotation is the essence of what this band is about. Basically it all comes down to that the individuals that are involved in this band strife for something more that just your usual "everydaylife", meaning that every person more or less has a intellect and it is really up to he or she what to do with it and we prefer to widen it instead of just floating along in the mainstream of todays society. I don’t know if it really was needed to break this quotation down and explain it but I guess that things that I take for granted isn’t always that obvious for others.
What is your opinion on the other acts signed to Near Dark? Anyone you consider to be worthy enough to strike as your rivals?
- I enjoy SORHIN but they are no longer working with Near Dark. I know that NDP have some newsigned bands but I haven’t heard any of them at this point so the answer to your question has to be No! We rule… Haha!
Majority of reviews on “Porphyrogenesis” appear as the ones drawing parallels between that CD and the works by DARK FUNERAL… Do you feel these comparisons are fair enough? Are there anything you’re going to do in order to make your band’s sound a bit more distinguishable?
- No not at all! A lot of editors makes it far to easy for them when it comes to comparing bands with eachother… Seems like some of them thinks that everything that is fast sounds like either DARK FUNERAL or MARDUK. We have been compared to every band that you can imagine so I have to say that things just get a bit comical after being compared to so many different bands. But hey, that got to mean that our sound isn’t that obvious after all.We will always develop soundwise but it dose not has anything to do with these editors that obviously don’t know what they are talking about. Black metal will probably always have a certain sound to it and it is really up to the bands to bring their own touches into the music.
Are you into spirits, drug using or getting yourselves fucked up in any other way? What about studying altered states of mind? What is the most splendid way for you to achieve a state of mind different to ‘normal’?
- I prefer to drink booze and beer but some drugs could be effective as they tend to widen some essential senses that could be valuable during occasions that have a ritualistic nature.I dont see any point in talking about that right here though.
What do you know (and think) regarding Russia? Any metal bands coming from our lands that you’ve heard lately?
- Not too much to be brutally honest. Vodka and the Russian mob is what strikes me first when I think of your country. As far as the bands... I’m afraid I cant mention a single one right now but I heard a lot of the Russian metalheads and how dedicated these people are.
Closing up! Last spells should be cast upon us now…
- Thanx Kai for this interview. We appreciate your support a great deal! Black T-shirts with white logo on front are available for 11$ and new T-shirts will be printed very soon… Write for more info regarding that.
