A.C.T.U.S.
“Sacro Sanctum”
Cthulhu Records
rating: 6 of 6
It’s hard to believe,
but this unique Hungarian act is nearly thirteen years old now… while this
album (despite the fact that it was unleashed in 1999) is a sort of “anniversary”
edition that has been made between December 1996 and June 1997. The cover
says that the whole album was “performed live on the occasion of the 10th
anniversary of the A.C.T.U.S. on June 7th 1997, at The Church Hall of The
Budapest Kiscelli Castle”. Sounds weird? Not at all, at least when it comes
to A.C.T.U.S. Yes, it’s exactly the kind of act (I can’t define ‘em as
regular “band”, you know) whose works should be performed in exactly such
places as I mentioned above… Their music… ah, it’s truly hard to describe.
Weird and perturbing, anxious yet bewitching, sick and tremendous… All
the words of the human language fail miserably if trying to tell anyone
what is A.C.T.U.S. I believe it’s utterly useless to go on with this review…
They elaborate highly intriguing, experimental form of new-age ambient
with unique musical and lyrical ideas behind it… and that’s all I can say
here… A masterpiece. (Herr Stalhammar)
AGATHODAIMON
“Higher Art Of Rebellion”
Nuclear Blast Records
rating: 6 of 6
Even though we have
tons of crap this issue, we also face somewhat frightening fact, i.e. that
there’re also TOO MUCH acts who have managed to unleash absolutely amazing
albums. Such as “Higher Art Of Rebellion” by this young German band. Even
if their debut CD, “Blacken The Angel”, was so-so (all pro-done, although
still not that exciting as it could be), this one is a masterpiece! “Higher
Art Of Rebellion” is extremely various, however this diversity doesn’t
harm it at all, since, even being absolutely different, all tracks merge
into one common thing. I’m sure that everyone (doesn’t matter what kind
of black metal or, more likely, what kind of music in the whole) he listens
to, will find something to attain his personal spiritual ecstasy… There’re
extremely dark and somber tracks like “Ne Cheama Pamintul” or “Glasul Artei
Viitoare”, capturing truly unique atmosphere, the atmosphere of pure demise,
forced by the inimitable vokills by Vlad… There’re somewhat romantic, even
heart-rending, though still rather anxious tunes like “Body Of Clay” (which
is, in fact, a black metal ballad!) or “Ribbons / Requiem” remix, featuring
amazingly strong and powerful Dio-alike “clean” vocals and stunning arrangements…
There’re typical (although the word “typical” is something we can’t associate
with AGATHODAIMON) black metal songs, such as “Back Into The Shadows”,
which remind me a bit of latest works by ANCIENT… And, of course, there’re
many more compositions (the album lasts for approximately 70 minutes) which
bring in few experimental moves and various samples… Ah, this effort is
a jewel! Furthermore, “Higher Art Of Rebellion” possesses nearly unique
sound, perhaps thanks to the fact that few songs are sung in Romanian,
while the whole album was also recorded in Romania (it may be easily explained,
since Vlad, the singer, comes from that country)! This is absolutely amazing
CD, don’t miss it! (Herr Stalhammar)
AKERCOCKE
“Rape Of The Bastard
Nazarene”
Goat Of Mendes Records
rating: 4 of 6
Interesting work.
This act (rather young one, I believe) plays exciting mixture of typical
death metal riffing and hateful UG black metal – although, the “UG” label
doesn’t necessary suggest ugly production and lack of musicianship… so,
the production is quite good as are the musicians’ playing skills. In general,
“Rape Of The Bastard Nazarene” is rather diverse CD, with few samples and
industrialized sounds brought in here and there… At least, this is neither
your typical “true” “bzzzzzzzzzzzz”-sounds, nor regular DIMMU BORGIR-cloning.
Check it out.
P.S. By the way,
what’s most strange with this band… is the way they entitle their creations.
Just imagine such banality as “Hell” or “The Goat” mixed with female names-entitled
tracks… (Herr Stalhammar)
ALGHAZANTH
“Thy Aeons Envenomed
Sanity”
Woodcut Records
rating: -
Why didn’t I rated
this CD, eh? Well, simply because it was too difficult task for me. ALGHAZANTH
is a rather young band coming from the shores of the land of a thousand
lakes, while their style is fast, synth-spiced black metal. Yeah, the sound
is great (Tico Tico Studio and, consequently, Ahti Kortelainen behind the
bench), and these guys are really good musicians… yes, arrangements sound
nearly stunning, while this CD doesn’t get boring as it often happens nowadays
with neophyte black metal acts’ debut recordings… Yeah, yeah, yeah… Blah,
blah, blah… Well, well, well… No, I didn’t lose my mind (yet). I just can’t
say anything else… ALGHAZANTH is too typical stuff, y’know. Yes, it’s all
pro-done, but still typical. Therefore, don’t make me go insane and rate
this album, because it isn’t worth of neither ‘6’ of ‘6’, nor ‘1’ of ‘6’.
LIMBONIC ART, EMPEROR, ODIUM, DIMMU BORGIR, LIAR OF GOLGOTHA, MYSTIC CIRCLE
and so on and so forth… If you like the bands mentioned above, dare and
purchase this album… All in all, it’s not so bad (oops, ‘not so fucking
standard’ is what I wanted to say). (Herr Stalhammar)
AMON AMARTH
“The Avenger”
Metal Blade Records
rating: 2, 5 of 6
And what am I supposed
to say here?! Let me say for one more time: if talented and skilled musicians
book such a studio as Abyss and record an album featuring stunning lyrics
and splendid cover artwork… the music may suck anyway. Especially, if you
come from Sweden… What we have here is fast-paced yet melodic and technical
BM-spiced death metal with viking attitude… I guess I’ve heard suchlike
stuff for thousand times, although AMON AMARTH stand against the background
of most similar bands coming from Sweden. However, it’s not the reason
to give ‘em a better rating. (Herr Stalhammar)
ANCIENT WISDOM
“… And The Physical
Shape Of Light Bled”
Avantgarde Music
rating: 5, 5 of 6
Surprisingly, sometimes
you get some good, non-typical black metal from Sweden which doesn’t have
anything to do with that country in terms of sound. Let me introduce you
ANCIENT WISDOM, the band (or one-man project??) led by Vargher of BEWITCHED.
However… I guess, the word “introduce” misshapens things a bit, since this
act was started in the year of 1992 and has two albums behind it. More
likely, two undoubtedly impressive albums – but this one is better anyway.
First conceived as MCD, it was finally released as full-length piece some
time ago. “… And The Physical Shape Of Light Bled” comes with seven songs
(+ a cover from DEMON, “The Spell” classic) of, no, absolutely not “slowest
and most depressive black metal band on Earth”, and no, it’s far from being
“the soundtrack of the end”, as their label tells us. Yes, ANCIENT WISDOM
is slow. But not the “slowest”. Moreover, it’s not depressive at all, more
likely tremendous, even somewhat beautiful, beautiful in a dreadful way,
of course. It’s uniqueness consists in utterly astounding combination of
brilliant symphonic parts, great guitar work (not some typical BM buzz,
y’know) and finally those inimitable shrieks performed by Marcus. This
album simply mesmerizes you… especially “As The Mourningstar Shineth” and
“The Serpent’s Blessing”. Well, the DEMON’s cover seems to be splendid
one as well. So does the artwork (by Jens Ryden of NAGLFAR). More than
highly recommended; especially, taking into consideration the fact it’s
original at 100% (surprise, surprise!). (Herr Stalhammar)
ANDRAS
“Quest Of Deliverance”
Last Episode Productions
(provided by SureShot
Promotion)
rating: 5 of 6
I like it. Even though
“Sword Of Revenge”, released back in 1999, was total crap, I like this
one. ANDRAS managed to create highly impressive effort this time, mainly
because of the studio change as well as adding more keyboards and variety…
I don’t know if it’s good or bad, however ANDRAS will always stay an underground
band and don’t ask me why… It’s just a fate of theirs, nothing more, nothing
less. “Quest Of Deliverance” is comprised of seven tracks (+ intro and
outro) tracks of melodic yet raw black metal (though, well played and recorded),
featuring some opera-alike female voices as well as male “clean” vocals
(which sound thousand times better if comparing ‘em to the ones present
on the work ANDRAS made their debut with, back in 1997)… All in all, this
album is the best one these guys have managed to create so far, even though
there’re only two of them left now (Damien Nightsky on guitars and Black
Abyss on vocals and bass + EMINENZ’ drummer doing drum-arrangements)… Check
out tracks like “Quest Of Deliverance”, “In The Shadow Of The Light” and
“Das Klagelied” and you’ll understand why I gave this CD ‘5’ of ‘6’. And
yeah, that SODOM’s cover, “Blasphemer”, really shreds!!! (Herr Stalhammar)
ANGIZIA
“Das Schachbrett
Des Trommelbuben Zacharias”
Napalm Records
rating: 5, 5 of 6
“Ah, it’s all the
same again!” – was the very first thought of mine when I gave a listen
to few tracks off this CD… BUT. Never judge anything until you get really
familiar with it. This is the latest effort from Austria’s ANGIZIA and,
obviously, their best work so far. It doesn’t differ a lot from their previous
CD’s, although I must admit that Engelke and co. endured some kind of metamorphosis
anyway. First of all, those high-pitched black metal vokills were removed,
as were the lyrics in Russian (and that’s only for good, in my view). Furthermore,
the arrangements became somewhat more bewitching and complicated, even
though I can’t really say “why”. In the whole, this album’s lyrical concept
is based upon “Pikovaya Dama” by one of the most famous Russian authors
of the 19th century, Alexander Pushkin – and you can even feel the Russian
spirit which this work is soaked with… especially, when accordion comes
in… Excellent CD – nothing more to say. (Herr Stalhammar)
ANOREXIA NERVOSA
“Drudenhaus”
Osmose Productions
rating: 5 of 6
Ladies and gentlemen,
here comes France’s CRADLE OF FILTH. And, in fact, I definitely prefer
this CD over “From The Cradle To Enslave”. Thousand times more various,
grim and blasphemous stuff, check it out. (Herr Stalhammar)
APHASIA
“Beyond The Infinite
Horizon”
self-released
rating: 4, 5 of 6
I haven’t received
anything from Canada for a long, long time, that’s for sure. But finally,
arrives the package with a CD-R, packed with an impressive coverart (well,
the appearance in the whole is good, even though it’s quite unpretentious).
The band is called APHASIA and they are black metal. Surprise? I guess
not. This MCD (or a demo CD? Doesn’t matter, really) is comprised of four
tracks of mid-tempo black metal, featuring both, typical BM vokills and
(lesser amount of) growling, splendid producership and playing skills (especially
when it comes to drummer). The music, even though it’s rather grim, appears
as somewhat dreamy and tranquil, simultaneously possessing inimitable atmosphere.
In fact, there’s nothing special in it, however I would never confuse APHASIA
with anyone else.
Email the band and
order this disk at <stephoule@videotron.ca>.

ARGHOSLENT
“Arsenal Of Glory”
Sempiternal Productions
rating: 5 of 6
This is a second
CD by Virginia's ARGHOSLENT, being comprised of six “new” (though recorded
back in 1996) tracks as well as four tunes taken off their almost legendary
“The Imperial Clans” demo (1994). This death metal outfit has survived
the long duration of the death genre and still stands today as a well respected
(although totally underground) death metal act. Though generally considered
death metal, I would have to argue ARGHOSLENT to be of a more old style
influenced metal band incorporating death-like qualities, adding few black
metal elements and a unique touch all to their own. Each production from
this band has succeeded in maintaining a raw and underground sound while
simultaneously emerging a step above all other bands in the underground
genre, as ARGHOSLENT owns an atmosphere to their music that cannot be matched
by another and puts them in their own category of genocidal impurity.
Original and thought provoking lyrics and imagery accompany this band and
has always added to a part of their uniqueness from others in the scene.
Coming with a splendid appearance, “Arsenal Of Glory” appears as highly
impressive release and recording well worth the interest of those who enjoy
hate, war, and holocaust. (Herr Stalhammar)
ART INFERNO
“Abyssus Abyssum
Invocat”
Scarlet / BL Music
rating: 3, 5 of 6
I first got acquainted
with this band thanks to the Black Tears newsletter and here’s their debut
CD. Well, I wouldn’t say I got high on it, unfortunately. It’s Italian-school
occult black metal in the vein of late EVOL and alikes, coming with stunning
artwork, perfect production and splendid musicianship, although it’s not
that impressive as I expected it to be. Despite that drumming sounds nearly
outstanding and those majestic arrangements appear as definitely bewitching
ones… it’s rather typical stuff anyway. Good, however I’m not sure if Italian
black metal scene gains anything by this band’s appearance. You know, it’s
the kind of case when you can’t drag the band into shit due to the fact
that there’s nothing bad in it, but in the same time you can’t praise it,
since it’s nothing special or outstanding. Well, it’s my opinion only,
so it’s up to you either to check out this CD or not. (Herr Stalhammar)
ASTAROTH
“Violent Soundtrack
Martyrium”
CCP Records
rating: 2 of 6
Actually, this one
is not bad. Too boring, though. You know, “Violent Soundtrack Martyrium”
seems to last for ages, therefore I was really surprised when I found out
that I’ve listened to only half of the songs, while I was sure that time
has come for this album to end. Basically, ASTAROTH perform quite typical
black metal. Fast, melodic, atmospheric… and so damn standard! All songs
are similar to each other, furthermore they use drum machine which, despite
that it’s fast and well programmed, sound nearly irritating sometimes…
I can’t really understand why CCP signed this band… as well as GRABAK,
whose latest effort is also far from being perfect… Hey men, you’d better
look for better bands outside Germany! (Herr Stalhammar)
AVERSE SEFIRA
“Homecoming’s March”
Arrogare Records
rating: 5 of 6
Let me be short this
time (a reader – “once again?!”). No? So who the hell are you to tell me
what I have to do and how to act?! Ah, yeah, you’re the one this mag is
intended for – to read through. Anyway, sorry. I’m drunk. Perhaps, that’s
why I like this CD? No. I guess, the answer is no. Definitely. AVERSE SEFIRA
come from USA and this duo plays black metal. Whatta surprise… Yeah, that’s
surely a surprise, because this act contrived to create WORTHY black metal.
Just conceive BLACK FUNERAL, make it much more technical, even more (!)
atmospheric and all pro-done and you’ll get AVERSE SEFIRA. No keyboards
(hmm…), only short (and truly fucking weird) introductions before each
song… Good vocals, good rhythms and harmonies (?), good musicianship, good
sound, good layout… and yeah, get rid of those disgusting “clean” vocals
(even though, the “choirs” strike as the splendid ones). True (not thoughtless,
though) black metal. All in all, if you’d like all pro-done (and seeming
to be sincere) pure black metal, check out this CD. I may be drunk, but
even if I’m drunk (as fuck) I still can distinguish crap from worthy stuff.
I think, AVERSE SEFIRA should be reckoned to the latter.
Oops! I forgot to
tell you that I’m going to arrange an interview with these guys… See ya.
(Herr Stalhammar)
BAL SAGOTH
“The Power Cosmic”
Nuclear Blast Records
rating: 5, 5 of 6
Well… do I really
need to say anything? In fact, I feel that I’d have to if BAL SAGOTH endured
some kind of metamorphosis in one way or another, however it’s all still
the same – with an exception for their image and lyrics. I guess, the album’s
title says it all… As to their contemporary appearance, you have to see
it yourselves. There’s no other way. Otherwise, you’ll just won’t believe
me if I describe it… Mighty warriors with ancient swords and ancient-Britannic
flags, wearing… leather jackets and sunglasses. Yeah, that’s truly weird
but still exciting conception (i.e. a stunning mixture of ages past and
modern high technologies). In short, “The Power Cosmic” seems to be quite
similar to such works as “Battle Magic” or “Starfire Burning…”, in the
same time being more… erh, brutal, perhaps? At least, that’s my opinion.
Splendid work by an outstanding band. (Herr Stalhammar)
BELIAL
“Never Again”
Lethal Records
rating: 4 of 6
BELIAL are back on
Lethal??? Can’t believe it! Kill me now, since I seem to be going insane…
Oh… Ok, nevermind. Let them release their CD’s through those labels they
want to do it… Unfortunately, “3” was the only album by this Finnish band
I’ve got myself acquainted with, and as I was told it didn’t have anything
to do with early works by these dudes. That one appeared as a weird cross
between grunge, alternative rock and black metal… Kinda NIRVANA meets IMPALED
NAZARENE, heh heh… “Never Again” is totally different and I believe it’s
some sort of “getting back to the roots”. This CD features ten tracks of
hateful and furious black metal with some originality, magnificently recorded
and performed. It reminds me a bit of the best songs by IMPALED NAZARENE,
although BELIAL sounds much more exciting, especially with these short
weird-sounding interludes between “normal” songs… Great. (Herr Stalhammar)
BEWITCHED
“At The Gates Of
Hell”
Osmose Productions
rating: 3 of 6
I have three CD’s
by BEWITCHED in my collection (“Diabolical Desecration” (1996), “Pentagram
Prayer” (1998) and this one) and it seems like “At The Gates Of Hell” is
their most successful release so far. It’s just plain, melodic yet aggressive
mixture of heavy and black metal with some thrash elements brought in.
Just like “Pentagram Prayer”, it was recorded in XL-Studio, although I
feel that the sound is better… By the way, this CD features few lineup
changes: Blackheim finally left the band and Stormlord replaced Reaper
on drums – and I guess, these changes are only for better. Just like with
all the albums by this Swedish band, “At The Gates Of Hell” gets a bit
boring after few songs (that’s why the first ones are best ones, like “Sabbath
Of Sin”, “Heaven Is Falling” and “Black Mass”), and you almost fall asleep
somewhere in the middle of the CD, being waken up only by “Let The Blood
Run Red”, a cover from THOR with… Thor on guest vocals. All in all, it’s
rather mediocre release. (Herr Stalhammar)
BLOODTHORN
“Onwards Into Battle”
Season Of Mist Productions
rating: 6 of 6
A lot of things changed
over years… Krell (vocals) and Tom (guitars, ex-MANES) were the only permanent
participants in BLOODTHORN back in 1997, when they made their debut with
“In The Shadows Of Your Black Wings”… That one was absolutely great effort,
however “Onwards Into Battle” strikes as even better work. Now the band
seems to have full lineup, supplemented with Kristine (female voice), Geir
Michael (keyboards) and Knarr (drums) who already took part in the debut
CD’s recording sessions, while Kai on lead guitar (who have been replaced
by the guy from AGRESSOR (a cult metal band from the lands of France)
after this album was completed) and Harald (bass) are the complete neophytes
when it comes to BLOODTHORN. Well, no surprise that “Onwards Into Battle”
is simply an outstanding effort! It brings much more powerful and, what’s
no less important, memorable music to be described as splendid mixture
of black and death metal, atmospheric at 1000000%, featuring few female
vocals here and there as well as brilliant, polyphonic sound. “Dolby-surround”,
ha ha. Vocals vary from deep, monster-alike growls to hateful black metallish
vokills, guitars thicken the whole sound, while drums tracks are one of
the most powerful ones I’ve ever heard in black metal… Well, seems you
already guessed that synths (also sounding extremely thick and enveloping)
just complete the whole picture of a BLOODTHORN battle… In general, the
music is mostly sombre and grim, especially in “Death To A King” and “The
Day Of Reckoning”, which are, along with 12-minute epic “The Brighter The
Light, The Darker The Shadow”, my favorite tracks off this magnificent
(once again – MAGNIFICENT!!!) CD. A MUST. (Herr Stalhammar)
CARPE TENEBRUM
“Mirrored Hate Painting”
Hammerheart Records
rating: 4, 5 of 6
Fast-paced, atmospheric
and bewitching black metal in the vein of “Anthems…”-era EMPEROR. In contrast
to their debut, this CD lacks some originality – as well as boredom. Majority
of tracks sound pretty similar to each other, although there’re few exceptions,
f.ex. closing “Dreaded Chaotic Reign”, an instrumental tune… definitely
a fascinating piece. I wouldn’t say that CARPE TENEBRUM appear as something
special, however the stuff they compose is enjoyable enough. And, of course,
all pro-done. (Herr Stalhammar)
CRADLE OF FILTH
“From The Cradle
To Enslave E.P.”
Music For Nations
rating: 3 of 6
Aha, one more EP
from CRADLE OF FILTH… but so fucking what?! It features six tracks, the
first one is the new one, “From The Cradle To Enslave” as well as “Of Dark
Blood And Fucking” (at least, I believe so) – and both seem to be rather
weak musically… well yes, they’re more brutal if comparing ‘em to the older
creations, but again – “so fucking what?!” These tunes are thousand times
less exciting anyway. Then we have absolutely uninteresting cover from
DANZIG, “Death Comes Ripping”, and more or less splendid cover from ANATHEMA,
“Sleepless”. The fifth track appears as “Perverts Church (From The Cradle
To Deprave)”, i.e. this MCD’s title-song that has been remixed by Damien
Clarke (SHIP OF FOOLS). I must admit, it strikes as quite exciting experiment
– apart from the new version of “Funeral In Carpathia”… All in all, this
is very mediocre release. (Herr Stalhammar)
CRYPTIC CARNAGE
“Retrospect 2000”
Serenades Records
(provided by SureShot
Promotion)
rating: 4 of 6
“Retrospect 2000”
is the third album from this rather impressive German act. The first one,
“And Another Kingdom Was Born”, released by Folter Records, appeared as
sort of “nothing-special-gothic-black-metal” stuff, while the second one
(“Rozelowe”, out through Last Episode) seems to be much more intriguing
– kinda black metallish gothic metal stuff with some folklore and medieval
passages incorporated. Listening to that one, I predicted this band a bright
future… but “Retrospect 2000” didn’t justify my hopes at all. This album
signifies yet few more lineup changes – Mathias Kruschke is the new singer,
while keyboards are now played by Andre Busch and bass – by Andreas Ritz.
This CD is based on lyrical concept dealing with the story of 2000 years
of human history and fantasy. The mystic, mean and most of all rebellious
sides of the human ones are being revived musically and lyrically; this
comprises subjects like f.ex. Mary Shelly’s “Frankenstein” and the prophecies
of Michel de Notredame… and so on, and so forth. Yes, sounds interesting
indeed. Furthermore, the sound quality is excellent due to the fact that
“Retrospect 2000” was executed in that famous Commusication Studio by Gerhard
Magin… and yes, PINK FLOYD’s cover, “High Hopes”, sounds enough exciting.
But that’s all if talking about good sides of this effort. The music itself
is some kind of gothic / dark wave stuff featuring few black metal and
psychedelic elements, heavy-sounding guitars and splendid vocal lines by
Mathias… all in all, just like EVER EVE’s “Regret”, it’s highly pleasant
effort – but that’s just not for me. You know, it lacks any shortcomings
(at least, visual ones), but I just don’t like it. Very average and mediocre
effort for me. (Herr Stalhammar)
DARK FUNERAL
“Teach Children To
Worship Satan”
No Fashion Records
rating: 5 of 6
Here comes a brand
new recording from Sweden’s masters of black art, DARK FUNERAL. First of
all, it’s not really a mini-CD of full value, since it features only one
new track which comes along with four covers and a video-clip (I can’t
judge whether it’s worthy one or not, since something wrong went with loading
it on my PC…). Lord Ahriman and co. have finally found a drummer, Gaahnfaust,
and I must admit, his work is pretty satisfying. Musically, “Teach Children…”
is definitely the kind of effort deserving our attention. The first track,
“An Apprentice Of Satan”, is done in typical DARK FUNERAL vein, although
(surprise, surprise!) it’s a bit more various, showing more epic side of
the band. The second one, “The Trial”, is a cover from KING DIAMOND, previously
featured on No Fashion compilation CD – and no doubts, it’s the best cover
off this effort! Furthermore, Lord Ahriman, Emperor Magus Caligula and
Gaahlfaust are being supplemented by Dee Moe on female vocals and Larsa
(who’s responsible for solo guitar) here – as well as on SLAYER’s “Dead
Skin Mask” (only Dee) and SODOM’s “Remember The Fallen” (only Larsa). Well,
other covers (including the last one, “Pagan Fears” by MAYHEM) are less
impressive, although good as well. Anyway, I’m expecting their third full-length
CD… no doubts, it will be a killer! (Herr Stalhammar)
DEMONIAC
“The Fire And The
Wind”
Osmose Productions
rating: 3, 5 of 6
The same case as
with BEWITCHED. “The Fire And The Wind” features similar melodic heavy
metal with black metallish voice; well, perhaps, lacking any thrashy elements,
but so what… Their first album (“Prepare For War”, 1995) appeared as highly
exciting and innovative effort, the second one (“Stormblade”, 1997) was
less impressive, although it was enough fresh back then… while “The Fire
And The Wind” is INCREDIBLY less interesting and intriguing. Yes, the guitar
parts sound stunning, yes, it’s full of worthy and memorable (not commercial,
though!) melodies, but… I’d hail only the title-song which is definitely
absolutely amazing piece, as well as “Myths Of Metal” with “Hitler Metal
– Sieg Heil!” refrain… (Herr Stalhammar)
DESASTRIOUS
“Loekr Inn Niflheim”
Desastrious Records
rating: -
Damn this fever.
While my friends hang out outside enjoying the sunshine, I have to stay
at home writing reviews… And it’s pretty hard to review stuff like “Loekr
Inn Niflheim” without having at least a couple of beers. No, they’re not
Norwegian as one could think. HE (as DESASTRIOUS is a one-man band) comes
from United States. And yes, he claims his lyrics are written mostly in
ancient Norse language. Why? Better ask Nocturnus. This CD is limited to
1000 (hand-numbered) copies – and I really doubt if this guy will contrive
to sell even this small quantity. So what about music? Ha… dare to conceive
a mixture of ILDJARN and “Filosofem”-era BURZUM. Actually, it heavily reminds
me of my first musical endeavors. Let’s get back in the year of 1994 and
fancy a young man who picks up Korea’s Ibanez along with old, small and
crappy Marshall amp, taking a sit near his stereo. And yes, then comes
the microphone stolen from Sony’s Karaoke VCR. Finally, he starts to “play”,
even though his attempts have nothing to do with music as he is not acquainted
with even one single accord. Further on, after he has recorded three “tracks”,
he tunes his guitar as low as possible conceiving himself a bassist… No,
this is not the end of a story. To finish it, I’ll have to tell you that
he uses ONLY ONE patch to get a drum sound. And finally, the demo tape
is ready!!! What a masterpiece! In fact, “Loekr Inn Niflheim” sounds pretty
similar to that experience (I quitted all my attempts to become a musician
long time ago. Lucky me, I guess), however it has some keyboards (although,
I doubt if Nocturnus is familiar with such a thing as sequencer) and rather
grim atmosphere. Some kind of nostalgia absorbed me while I was listening
to this CD, you know… I don’t really know what to add here. For raw black
metal die-hard fans only. (Herr Stalhammar)
DIABOLICAL
“Dominus Infernal”
Icarus Productions
rating: 5 of 6
This is the second
band coming from Paraguay I’ve heard, and surprisingly it’s no less good
than SABAOTH, even though they’re really different stylistically. While
SABAOTH are into some kind of gothic black metal, DIABOLICAL definitely
seem to worship early BURZUM. This CD, recorded in Winter of 1996 and (due
to various reasons) released only three years after, contains nine songs
of pure mayhem, with insanity-spiced shrieks being very similar to those
of Varg, stupendous drumming (just listen to “Ready For The Ceremony” or
“The Ancient God Serpent”!) and very good guitar work (there’s even a splendid
solo one can discover while listening to “The Warriors”-track). You won’t
find any synths or female voices here, however it doesn’t strike as a shortcoming,
since DIABOLICAL simply don’t need anything except “usual” instruments,
like guitars, bass and drums. Once again; everything is performed on a
surprisingly high level; the same goes for production (and layout as well).
And no, it’s not your old-fashioned black metal, the one “which won’t find
any listeners due to the fact it’s utterly obsolete”. I guess, every feeble
BM soul would recall that the latest CD from IMMORTAL (which is also “obsolete”)
gained truly positive feedback – and I hope, the same will happen to this
album. (Herr Stalhammar)
DIABOLICUM
“The Grandeur Of
Hell (Soli Satanic Gloriam)”
Napalm Records
rating: 4 of 6
Ultra-fast though
diverse Swedish black metal played (and composed) with a thought. Some
pseudo-symphonic elements appear here and there, however it’s mostly guitar-based
stuff. And yes, add few industrial-vanguard-hell-knows-what sounds and
a (pretty well-programmed) drum-machine. Good. (Herr Stalhammar)
DREAM INTO DUST
“No Man’s Land”
Chthonic Streams
rating: 4 of 6
The history says
that DREAM INTO DUST already have one CD behind them (on Elfenblut / Misanthropy),
however “No Man’s Land” is the first effort by this trio that I’ve got
myself acquainted with. It comes with amazing artwork and packaging
and four songs of ravaging dark ambient / industrial stuff, although it
sounds nearly romantic at times. Usually, suchlike works don’t feature
any voices, however DREAM INTO DUST managed to find an individual with
undoubtedly pleasant voice, although I must admit that it sounds rather
weird here due to the fact that his singing would fit some power metal
or dark wave act better, no doubts. Ok, I don’t really know what to add.
It’s enough enjoyable and exciting MCD, furthermore, rather original, but
I can’t say that it made me really intrigued. Good. But every “good” is
the worst enemy of every “perfect”. (Herr Stalhammar)
DROTTNAR
“Spiritual Battle”
Plankton Records
rating: -
I’m always a bit
confused when I get stuff like this. You see, I didn’t know DROTTNAR is
a christian band (with a lineup of four (!) brothers, by the way!) when
I gave this CD a listen for the first time – and obviously liked it, since
musically “Spiritual Battle” (being comprised of this band’s two earlier
works in the shape of demo efforts) definitely appears as highly
exciting CD! In short, to give you a hint about their style, imagine a
combo of early SATYRICON and AETERNUS and you’ll get the point. Yes, mostly
slow and mid-paced dark (‘light’…?) metal with vocals varying from black
metallish shrieking to deep, enigmatic growls (the latter ones prevail
on the second demo which is actually also a second part of the CD). Rarely
the synth breaks in, though in the whole the atmosphere is being forced
by the usual instruments, such as guitar, drums and bass. As all the songs
were executed at X-Ray Studio and later mastered, it’s obvious that “Spiritual
Battle” lacks shortcomings in terms of sound. The only thing I could cavil
at here (besides lyrical canvas, of course) is the cover which is undoubtedly
ugly (in fact, being the same photo as on the back, only a bit distorted).
Very good CD… but it could be better if they sang in Norwegian – than I
wouldn’t understand a word. It could be good as well if they didn’t publish
lyrics. It’s truly a pity when you get a CD which strikes as a splendid
one musically, in the same time feeding you with christian crap lyrically…
(Herr Stalhammar)
EINHERJER
“Norwegian Native
Art”
Native North Records
rating: 5 of 6
EINHERJER comes back
with a third full-length piece, as worthy as “Odin Owns Ye All”. One thing
I can’t really understand is why they can’t manage to keep on associating
with the same label for at least three CD’s…? I’m going to wonder about
in while arranging the interview, anyway. So what about the music? Basically,
“Norwegian Native Art” (what a pathos!) is done in the same vein as “Odin…”,
even though it differs a bit (or more than a bit). First of all, despite
the fact production is the same as previously (Los Angered and Andy LaRocque
behind the bench), the sound overall seems to be somehow gloomier. Furthermore,
the music itself endured certain kind of metamorphosis – of course, it’s
only my personal opinion, but some tracks off “Norwegian Native Art” strike
as the ones which can be described as “melodic death metal mixed with thrash-alike
voice as well as some heavy metal and folk seeds incorporated”. Definitely,
Ragnar sings a bit differently this time – and I wouldn’t say it’s a good
change, since I like his “clean” voice much more than this aggressive pseudo-singing.
Perhaps, that’s why the closing track (“Regicide”), which features “clean”
vocals (along with stunning female ones!), is my favorite off this CD.
Besides afore-said, there’re more keyboards here, sublime and truly impressive,
although they were somehow moved to the background – the thing I don’t
like, since due to this fact synths sounds less exciting (this is the second
and final shortcoming regarding this album). Musically, “Norwegian Native
Art” is more varied than “Odin…”, hence if I had to choose, I’d pick up
this one. (Herr Stalhammar)
EISREGEN
“Leichenlager”
Last Episode Productions
(provided by SureShot
Promotion)
rating: 4 of 6
Hmm… Already a third
from this German act… and I wouldn’t say I liked it a lot. You see, it’s
all the same… Just listen to “Krebsolonie” and “Leichenlager” – you will
find no more than few differences, that’s for sure. No doubts that EISREGEN
contrived to stay highly original band, possessing the sound of their own…
These violin-alike sounding keyboards (or is it a real violin??), grim
though sometimes nearly sublime atmosphere, (almost) perfect sound and
exciting, moreover – innovative, tunes… but there’re too much of them,
you know. “Leichenlager” would be a masterpiece if it had lesser amount
of songs… Anyway, if you’re craving for something original, intriguing
and diverse, yet still 100% black metallish, get this CD. You won’t be
disappointed. (Herr Stalhammar)
ENOCHIAN CRESCENT
“Omega Teloclovim”
Avantgarde Music
rating: 5, 5 of 6
Wow, I’ve just reviewed
“Babalon Patrale De Teloclovim”, a mini-CD from this fantastic Finnish
band, and here comes yet one more effort of theirs, also featuring the
word “teloclovim” in it’s title (that’s a weird thing for me… at least,
taking into account the fact that their first CD (1998) carries the name
“Teloclovim”)! This album comes with nine songs of top-class black metal,
composed and performed the way only ENOCHIAN CRESCENT manage to do. Great
vocals (although the singer’s shrieks sound nearly funny on “Vakisinkastettu”),
both black metal and “clean” ones, perfect arrangements (there’re no sublime
orchestrations or majestic choirs here… these guys just don’t need all
this crap) – and the word “perfect” also regards production and performance.
All in all, despite all the rumours concerning this band, I’d say that
ENOCHIAN CRESCENT contrive to put out undoubtedly outstanding piece of
black art – and “Omega Teloclovim” isn’t an exception. Check out the song
“Grey Skin” (the best one here), as well as their lyrics… they’re also
stand against the background of all this “satan-winter-wolves-and-frost”
shit. Just like everything that regards ENOCHIAN CRESCENT. A must! (Herr
Stalhammar)
ESTATIC FEAR
“A Sombre Dance”
CCP Records
rating: 6 of 6
I have awaited this
one for a really long time…! And, fortunately, ESTATIC FEAR managed to
justify my hopes. Now the band actually consists of one man, Mathias Kogler
(a.k.a. Calix Miseriae), while vocals (both, male and female), drums, flute,
cello and lute have been performed by the guest musicians… Musically, this
CD is more complex and less various (and that’s good, since “Somnium Obmutum”
was TOO various) if comparing it to the older stuff. Vocals’ range remained
the same: hateful black metal voice, heart-rending female vocals and growling
soaked with melancholy… Now there’re more acoustics and flute parts which,
I believe, sound much better – the same, by the way, goes for the Claudia’s
voice, since her singing seems to be more impressive than the one by the
girl who sang on “Somnium Obmutum” CD. Three years passed since the release
of the first album by Mathias, however I doubt if this time was spent in
vain. “A Sombre Dance” was worth the wait. All the lovers of extremely
melancholic, tremendously fascinating stuff should get this CD at once.
By the way, I’m strongly assured that “A Sombre Dance” will appeal to many
black metallers as well… (Herr Stalhammar)
GOD DETHRONED
“Bloody Blasphemy”
Metal Blade Records
rating: 6 of 6
Wow, this one seems
to appear as one of the most perfect combinations of brutality and melody
I’ve ever heard! While the former album (the second one in their discography
and the first one from GOD DETHRONED in my collection) didn’t do anything
for me, “Bloody Blasphemy” is actually a masterpiece. Starting with “Serpent
King” track, featuring memorable refrain and harmonic vocals mixed with
hellish screaming, fast and tight playing, being thoughtout structurally
as well, it’s just perfect for an opening song. Later on we have few more
innovations like female voice (occasionally), piano on “The Execution Protocol”
as well as some keyboards – and despite the fact thousands of bands did
it before, all of the elements mentioned above definitely sound innovative
in GOD DETHRONED’s interpretation. Each track is memorable, with killer
riffs, harmonies and leads, as well as overall performance. Style-wise,
this is death / black (or more likely, black / death), however it stands
so far above the majority of alike acts! I just can’t stop listening to
this CD… seems like, along with “Nemesis” by SCHEITAN, it’s my favorite
one at the moment. BUY THIS! (Herr Stalhammar)
GOREWINTER
“Buried By Night”
Meat Hook Productions
rating: 5 of 6
First release in
the shape of CD from Meat Hook, I suppose? And it’s quite successful, indeed.
GOREWINTER is black metal. Finnish black metal. And even though it (almost)
lacks originality, I was rather impressed… Mostly fast+melodic+aggressive=GOREWINTER.
Add splendid musicianship and the fact all of three songs represented here
strike as very memorable ones, and you’ll see why I liked it. However;
that harmony in track 2 reminds me a lot of “Twilight” by EDGE OF SANITY…
and that refrain the last tune off this MCD has, also reminds me of… hmm,
sorry, can’t recall at the moment. But the thing is, “Sanguine Acts” features
something that was definitely invented by certain person aside from GOREWINTER.
But ok, who cares if they’re not sooooo fucking oooooriginal? These guys
contrived to create truly magnificent piece of black metal. And yes, by
the way, the drummer is excellent, as are those (rare) synth parts. Highly
recommended. (Herr Stalhammar)
GORGOROTH
“Incipit Sathanas”
Nuclear Blast Records
rating: 5 of 6
Yeah, this is GORGOROTH.
The sound is, as always, raw, although you know that it was done on purpose,
vocals range from inhuman shrieks to (nearly) magnificent “clean” voice
(no pseudo-viking chants, though); furthermore Infernus and co. added few
keyboards parts here and there, as well as some industrial elements (a-la
DEUTSCH NEPAL and MORTHOUND, you know)… And yeah, Gaahl of mighty TRELLDOM
appears as the lead vocalist. Good. At least, musically this is a huge
improvement. (Herr Stalhammar)
GRABESMOND
“Xenoglossie”
Draenor / Napalm
rating: 6 of 6
This is a different
thing to “Mordenheim”, a first work by GRABESMOND. “Xenoglossie” appears
as a strange mixture of medieval, sometimes pseudo-baroque tunes and a
bit industrialized hymns of modern torture, featuring various samples and
sequenced drums… The atmosphere “Xenoglossie” is impregnated with is utterly
weird, to say the least. How about fancying DEUTSCH NEPAL with medieval
flute, huh?! That’s what GRABESMOND grant you… Bewitching. (Herr Stalhammar)
GRAVEWORM
“As The Angels Reach
The Beauty”
rating: 4, 5 of 6
Serenades Records
What a stupid title
for the CD! However, the album itself is good… more likely, really good.
As far as I remember, GRAVEWORM’s previous work in the shape of “Underneath
The Crescent Moon” MCD appeared as truly stunning effort… and that “How
Many Tears” cover nearly made me get high on it… I expected great things
from this Italians… well, speaking honestly, their newest CD didn’t disappoint
me, however I was waiting for something much more intriguing and innovative.
“Good” always will be an antonym for “great”, and we have exactly such
a situation here. It’s very good album, featuring some top-notch black
/ death with some heavy metal elements, brilliant “Dolby-surround” keyboards,
powerful vocals and so on and so forth, BUT. I expected a masterpiece,
or at least the sort of album which can get no less than ‘6’ of ‘6’. This
one – can not. (Herr Stalhammar)
HIMINBJORG
“In The Raven’s Shadow”
Red Stream Records
rating: 4 of 6
More Norse-inspired
black metal, although I doubt if this band comes from Scandinavia. Anyway,
this is good effort, atmospheric, well-played and exciting, featuring almost
inimitable howl-alike pseudo-viking voices here and there. What’s most
strange, this CD gets better in the end, with tracks like “Dream Walker”
or “The Voice Of Blood”. There we have splendid guitar leads and organ-keys
in the background… All in all, this is a worthy substitute to HIMINBJORG’s
former CD, even though the sound quality here is far worse (don’t ask me
why). (Herr Stalhammar)
HOLLENTHON
“Domus Mundi”
Napalm Records
rating: 5 of 6
Weird CD. Comprised
of such people as Martin Schirenc on vocals, guitars, bass and keyboards
(PUNGENT STENCH), his either sister or wife Elena on female vocals and
finally Mike Groeger (better known as Silenius of SUMMONING) on drums,
HOLLENTHON seems to be an “all-star band”… just like RAVENTHRONE, for example.
And you can’t be wrong with suchlike conglomerations. Well, HOLLENTHON
definitely stands apart from most of contemporary black metal bands, since
their music is too strange and unpredictable to be reckoned to “black metal
mainstream”. I believe, it was some kind of an experiment… just like HEIDENREICH,
latest ODHINN, PECCATUM and others of that ilk. I.e., so-called “avantgarde
BM” acts. Well, perhaps, not exactly “avantgarde” – but “progressive” for
sure. Fortunately, “Domus Mundi” is quite easy to listen to, despite all
of it’s progressiveness. What mainly differs this band from the ones mentioned
above is the wide use of various oriental instruments and melodies, as
well as some medieval stuff a-la GOLDEN DAWN. Generally speaking, this
is very interesting effort, so check it out. (Herr Stalhammar)
IN AETERNUM
“Forever Blasphemy”
Necropolis Records
rating: 2 of 6
Extremely boring
Swedish black metal. Well played, well produced. Nothing more to say. (Herr
Stalhammar)
LAHKA MUZA
“Sen Ohraniceneho
Zivota”
Sonicca L.t.d.
rating: 6 of 6
First of all, I don’t
even know how to define this band. Am I right or wrong putting this review
in “black metal and related stuff” section? Both, I guess. Firstly, LAHKA
MUZA could be a synonym for darkness. True darkness. When there’s no exit,
no light in the corridor’s end, no hope left, just nothing. All the eight…
songs? No. Tracks? Nope. Creations is a better word, I guess. All of them
absorb you, enshroud and drown you in the ocean of pain… suffering… the
utter decline… Gudrun’s voice, similar to that of shaman, howl-alike, somehow
making me to recall Diamanda Galas (???), only forces the atmosphere from
the it’s very first sounds – and till the end. I don’t know what could
I say regarding this Slovak band style-wise… Perhaps, this offering may
be defined as a sick mixture of extremely somber goth, ambient and dark
industrial… I can’t tell you anything on the subject of their (there’re
only two individuals in the band, Gudrun and 677) beliefs (I hope to find
it out in the forthcoming interview, though), hence I’m still uncertain
either to reckon ‘em to “black metal / ambient / dark industrial” horde
or not… but who cares… The music speaks for itself – and it’s even darker
than SKEPTICISM… weirder than DEUTSCH NEPAL and THE MOON LAY HIDDEN BENEATH
A CLOUD… more somber than AKHENATON and others of that ilk… Those who contrived
to create such a canvas can’t follow any god of light. Nevermind… this
is absolutely astounding effort. Remember these words of mine when choosing
what CD to order this weekend. (Herr Stalhammar)
LET ME DREAM
“The Maze”
Nocturnal Music
rating: 5 of 6
We have two bands
whose name starts with ‘l’ and has the word ‘dream’ in this issue… however
LET ME DREAM stands so high in comparison to LOST DREAMS! This CDS definitely
is a pleasant surprise, perhaps mostly thanx to the fact of inviting new
lead singer, Tuukka Koskinen, whose voice is incredibly stronger than Marko’s
(especially when it comes to the “clean” vocals). I really appreciate this
dark, low-pitched singing… as well as black metal voice, which is present
here as well, being much more furious than ever before! Furthermore, one
more person joined the band in the shape of second guitarist (namely Juhana
Stolt). LET ME DREAM undoubtedly stays one of the leading dark metal bands
in Finland, in the same time reaching the borders of black metal… moreover,
trespassing it! “The Maze” is only a single CD, whose main purpose consists
in promoting the second full-length album by LET ME DREAM (check out the
review below)… If you’d like to get any additional info, here it comes:
this CD includes “The Maze” and “Into The Deep Blue Sea” as well as few
tracks recorded live (“My Dear Succubus” and “Wolfborn” to be exact) and
the new tracks undoubtedly everything these guys have done so far… (Herr
Stalhammar)
LOST DREAMS
“Reflection Of Darkness”
Lost Dreams Records
rating: 2 of 6
When I asked the
band to send me this MCD, I was definitely expecting for much more impressive
effort… Well, “thanks” to Black Tears’ newsletter once again. I have never
read such confusing reviews as the ones by Daniele. He defined my band
(ROSSOMAHAAR) as fast melodic death metal in the vein of early NIGHTFALL
and SEPTIC FLESH, while all those who have heard it, described our CD as
a mixture between latest BEHEMOTH, DARK TRANQUILLITY and EMPEROR! As to
LOST DREAMS, Daniele wrote the following: “A great debut from Austrian
band LOST DREAM (and what about adding ‘s’-letter to the word ‘dream’,
eh? – ED)! This MCD is self-produced, with very good layout, extreme great
artwork inside the disk, and a complete interactive page to show very professionally
the band. This MCD is titled “Reflections Of Darkness”, and contains five
tracks, plus CD-ROM track. This five-piece plays melodic sympho-death.
They remember me something about gods GRAVEWORM”. Yeah, yeah, yeah… Whatta
mess! Let’s go straight by discussing each statement. First of all, it’s
not a “five-piece”, there’re seven persons in the band! Secondly, the layout
and artwork are both good, however I couldn’t discover anything special
there… The music is quite raw and definitely incomplete mixture of death
and black metal, somewhat reminding me of CRESTFALLEN (remember such a
band?) as well as early works by ANCIENT CEREMONY. I wouldn’t dare to say
that it has any “sympho” elements, no. Only some keyboards here and there…
The sound is not bad, although in order to reach anything, these guys have
to: a) find a better studio (or, more likely, to purchase better equipment,
since I guess it was their own home studio where this MCD was recorded
at) and b) improve their skills, since, even if they’re rather good musicians,
it’s not enough to reach the Parnassus… Furthermore, few words regarding
that CD-ROM track… It’s sort of live video which didn’t impress me at all.
To call yourselves a black metal band you have to BE a black metal band,
at least on stage. Sorry, guys, maybe next time… (Herr Stalhammar)
MALIGNANT ETERNAL
“Alarm”
Napalm Records
rating: 5, 5 of 6
Excellent effort
from one of my favorite Norwegian bands. This is their third full-length
album to date and also their best, at least that’s what I think of it.
“Alarm” differs a lot from all of it’s predecessors in terms of both music
and lyrics. First of all, it’s faster, more brutal, featuring much more
synths, this times performed on a more electronic matter (well, in the
end “Alarm” almost turns into grim form of a black / industrial mixture,
at least with tracks like “Enigma II”). Don’t remember exactly if the former
albums featured programmed drumset, but this time it’s definitely a computer
spawn, however MALIGNANT ETERNAL only gain by it… perhaps, due to the fact
that it was programmed in a very correct, sage… and twisted way. Just like
“Onwards Into Battle” by BLOODTHORN and many other albums reviewed this
issue, “Alarm” also has that “Dolby-surround” effect when it comes to the
whole sound, making it (guess what?) more powerful, completely covering
the listener with a musical shroud until the album ends… Excellent. (Herr
Stalhammar)
MEPHISTOPHELES
“Songs Of The Desolate
Ones”
Last Episode Productions
(provided by SureShot
Promotion)
rating: 5 of 6
“Kurgan Supremacy”,
“Moldavian Fires”… I was close to start considering this band Moldavian
due to such song titles and the fact that I was completely unable to figure
out the bandname out of logo… however when I opened the promo sheet which
came together with the CD, I knew it was MEPHISTOPHELES, the band which
doesn’t have anything to do with Moldavia – simply because they come from
Germany. And it’s their second effort, by the way… Long time ago I reviewed
“Landscape Symphonies”, the album they made their debut with, and as far
as I remember, it got nearly the highest rating. Well, everything’s the
same with “Songs Of The Desolate Ones”. Top-class black metal, well-played
and well-recorded, featuring memorable passages and stunning arrangements
(by the way, the choirs were sung by… BLIND GUARDIAN vocalists!)… not that
original, although lacking any commercial stuff in the same time. It’s
fast, sometimes mid-paced, with melodic yet aggressive guitars… true black
metal effort. Great album from a magnificent band. The only shortcoming
goes for the fact that “Songs Of The Desolate Ones” lacks such killer tracks
as “Infinite Dreams”… (Herr Stalhammar)
MOON
“Satan’s Wept”
System Shock
(provided by SureShot
Promotion)
rating: 6 of 6
Why does the image
of the moon obsess us that much? Who knows… “Satan’s Wept” is a second
CD by this band; the one formed by Cezar, who’s also the mastermind behind
CHRIST AGONY. This time he’s being supplemented by Blackie on bass and
backing vocals, Heyron on guitars and Mark behind the drumkit. Well, in
fact it’s not Mark but a drummachine, however the drum tracks sound stupendous,
so it doesn’t really matter… First of all, I must admit that “Satan’s Wept”
possesses undoubtedly killer artwork and layout, so in terms of appearance
this is the best CD I’ve got from System Shock that evening. Musically,
it’s a perfect continuation of “Daemon’s Heart”, although “Satan’s Wept”
doesn’t appear as a copycat of the former CD by MOON. Hey, Cezar managed
to improve every single thing, man! This album features absolutely tremendous
leads which only adorn the musical canvas MOON offers us with this piece…
piece of unholy art, sort of furious BM spiced with few heavy metal elements,
astounding “synthetic movements” and those unforgettable vocals – Cezar’s
voice definitely can’t be confused with anyone’s else. I was listening
to all the twelve tracks with bated breath; moreover, some kind of a supreme
force made me to play this CD all over again and again. Furthermore, “Satan’s
Wept” comes with a video clip on “Satanica”, and believe me, it’s worth
watching! Besides the fact that this song is a pure jewel itself, you’ll
surely be knocked down by brilliant computer graphics it’s packed with…
Generally speaking, MOON have returned with yet one more splendid work
of theirs, and you’d better don’t miss it! A masterpiece. (Herr Stalhammar)
THE MOON LAY HIDDEN
BENEATH A CLOUD
“The Smell Of Blood
But Victory” / “Rest On Your Arms Reserved” (1997 / 1999)
Arthur’s Round Table
rating: 6 of 6
I don’t know why
am I writing this review… it seems to me to be ever more difficult than
the one on A.C.T.U.S. This Austrian duo’s efforts should be listened to,
not described, although both CD’s are harder to get into, than “Sacro Sanctum”.
“The Smell Of Blood But Victory” comes in the shape of a double-CD (the
first one is 60:14 long, the second one – 29:36) with no names given to
the tracks. In fact, this duo is unorthodox when it comes to everything
– as I already said, they refuse to entitle their creations; and it’s some
kind of a visual side. Musically, it consists in quite successful attempt
to combine Europe’s medieval folklore with XX century mechanics and industrialization.
As a result we have two albums (the new one, which is actually more likely
a compilation, seems to be even weirder) that balance on the edge between
genius and insanity, madly heart-rending art comprised of mostly archaic
moves, shamanic melodies and evocations, mixed with diverse loops and samples’
stuff. It strikes as these works are most eclectic in THE MOON LAY HIDDEN
BENEATH A CLOUD’s discography, this time even more anxious and militaristic
in the same time. Furthermore, everyone can hear the Russian speech in
few compositions, while Ukrainian traditional “Raspriagaite, hlopzi, koniv”
even appears as the single track. The newest CD (this time a bit shorter
when it comes to duration… all in all, 58 minutes) comes with 15 tunes
that may drive many of us utterly insane. If you doubt my words, listen
to “Were you of silver, were you of gold”… Meet you at the asylum. The
medieval one. (Herr Stalhammar)
MOONSPELL
“The Butterfly Effect”
Century Media Records
rating: 6 of 6
Oh, whatta mess!
I mean, those who became freaks on “Sin” (the former CD by MOONSPELL) due
to the fact that it was lovely gothic rock, should get fucking embarrassed
while listening to this one! Let’s hail all the supreme forces that ever
existed since MOONSPELL managed to get rid off (almost) all the commercial
influences. “The Butterfly Effect” begins with the “Soulsick” track which
heavily reminds me of their side-project, DAEMONARCH, being anxious and
atmospheric mixture of industrialized dark wave and sympho-black metal.
The same goes for “Butterfly Fx”, as well as “Lustmord” and “Selfabuse”,
the best tunes off this magnificent effort (while tracks like “Can’t Bee”
(killer!), “I Am The Eternal Spectator” and “Disappear Here” are
more likely done in the vein of the best songs off “Sin” CD). It seems
like MOONSPELL contrived to reach the greatness of their early works, such
as “Under The Moonspell” and “Wolfheart”, in the same time bringing in
something new. At least, now they sound totally different from both, “Wolfheart”
and “Second Skin” / “Sin” eras – but also similar, combining all the best
they ever created, adding new elements, almost vanguard-like at times.
Such are the bass and drum tracks in few songs, such is “K”, the instrumental
track which is the last one on “The Butterfly Effect”. The black metal
voice is back (even more vicious now!), while “clean” vocals seem to be
hugely improved. Keyboards and various samples create undoubtedly weird
atmosphere, while all in all, being rather experimental, the music on “The
Butterfly Effect” is also brutal. The lyrics featured on “The Butterfly
Effect”, no doubts, appear as most weird and depraved among those Fernando
ever spawned… How do you like the following lines: “Let me exaggerate you
/ Distort you from inside out / Love you by different rules / Fuck you
up to your soul”… “On my knees now / I’ll inflict myself / Some real love
/ On my knees now / I’ll choke myself / In troubled love”… “I will insist
on you / Until you become the Truth / I will decay with you / Until you
become the Ruin / Let me celebrate here / Now that nothing is left of you”…
“Where’s this small dead hand that creeps me / I am biting it to it’s very
bone / Collapsing with everything new on me / Until it get so very old”…?!
The only weak point here is the lack of memorable songs (perhaps, with
an exception for “Soulsick” and “Can’t Bee”) – they’re TOO varied, TOO
avantgarde (of course not all of them, but few) to become new “Opiums”,
“Wolfshades” or “Ruin And Miserys”… Anyway, a great effort. Let me say
sorry for accusing this band in becoming commercial crap as I did in the
“2econd Skin” review. (Herr Stalhammar)
MORTIIS
“Crypt Of The Wizard”
Earache Records
rating: 4 of 6
Obviously, this is
a re-release of the 1997 CD carrying the same title. Now available through
Earache… yeah, sure, that’s no surprise, since Mortiis signed a deal with
this company some time ago and already managed to release an all-new CD,
“The Stargate”… Yeah, “The Stargate” was truly a magnificent effort – in
contrast to this one. “Crypt Of The Wizard” in fact is a collection of
tracks taken off limited edition twelve inch singles. Musically, it’s hundred
times more primitive and uninteresting if comparing it to the latest works
by Mortiis, however it’s quite exciting at times. In short, rather low-tech
ambient which could sound much better if recorded on a better equipment
with more imagination used. This CD includes ten tracks, and while most
of them appear as quite mediocre, such tunes as “Davi Bygde Tarner (When
We Raised The Tower)”, “I Morket Drommende (In Darkness Dreaming)” and
“Fanget I Krystal (Captured In Crystal)” strike as something I really like.
At least, these ones feature much more intriguing melodies, thus making
better soundscapes out of them. Good album – and, of course, a-must-to-have
for all the Mortiis’ fans. (Herr Stalhammar)
NAKED LUNCH
“Everything Dies”
Bat Lake Musik
rating: 4, 5 of 6
William Burroughs
lives again, heh heh… Well, honestly speaking, this CD made me truly confused,
since I couldn’t really decide either I should place a review on “Everything
Dies” in “black metal and related music” or “other stuff” section. Well
ok, I chose the first one and you may curse me if you’d like to, claiming
NAKED LUNCH to be a purely industrial act… Yes, it is, weird and brutal
industrial stuff, with sombre atmosphere and black metal voice as well
as “gothic” one, reminding me a lot of KAVIAR KAVALIER and MORPHINE ANGEL.
Yes, “Everything Dies” features plenty of gothic / dark wave elements and
it sounds strange, no doubts, especially the way Mxyzptlk (vocals, guitars)
(what a handle…!) and co. combine all this shit together! The CD begins
with the song “Wonderful”, which is one of the best ones off “Everything
Dies” to show you this somewhat nearly unique combination. The second one,
“Continue To Breath”, is more on a psychedelic side, also with a bigger
amount of various electronics, being one of the most weird tunes here.
Besides these ones, I’d like to mention “Transmission”, a cover of JOY
DIVISION, “Confess: Everything Dies”, “Lady And The Vamp” and “Undone”
which are among the best tracks on this album. Produced by Grammy award
winner, Neil Kernon, who worked with such dudes as SKREW, Peter Gabriel,
QUEENSRYCHE and DOKKEN, “Everything Dies” sounds almost amazing when it
comes to producership and sound quality in general… I guess, it’s the kind
of CD you should give at least a couple of listens to get into it… And
no, there’re absolutely no death metal parts as many reviews say! (Herr
Stalhammar)
NOCTURNAL WINDS
“Everlasting Fall”
Aftermath Music
rating: 2 of 6
WHEN WILL IT END???
Tell me now, since I can’t stand this anymore. This either Finnish or Norwegian
band plays melodic, mid-paced, although sometimes really fast form of black
metal… Nothing new, nothing exciting and totally boring. Yeah, they’re
not bad as musicians (unfortunately, I can’t say the same regarding production),
and there’re few good melodies, but so fucking what?? You can’t really
imagine how I’m tired of these mediocrities! Sorry guys, but if you send
me the CD it doesn’t necessary mean I’ll praise it to the skies! Remember
that. (Herr Stalhammar)
OBSIDIAN GATE
“The Nightspectral
Voyage”
Skaldic Art Productions
rating: 5 of 6
You should listen
to this CD, my precious reader, and you’ll understand that there’re better
bands than LIMBONIC ART. What’s most strange with this effort, it almost
lacks any originality, everything seems to be rather typical, however I
simply can’t drag it into shit… Why? Well, maybe because these guys (and
girls) are sincere in what they do? Also, perhaps, due to the fact that
these Wagnerian orchestral arrangements by Daniela sound brilliant… much
better than Daemon and Morfeus (those, from LIMBONIC ART) will ever manage
to compose. In short, this is very good symphonic, 100000 times orchestrated
black metal with a nice-sounding drummachine (hmm…) and (surprise!) powerful
guitar sound (well, the sound in the whole is also very good)… Splendid
CD. (Herr Stalhammar)
OLD MAN’S CHILD
“Revelation 666 (The
Curse Of Damnation)”
Century Media
rating: 5 of 6
Yeah, this is OLD
MAN’S CHILD. Perhaps, a bit more intense and less heavy metal-oriented
(as well as less “commercial”) than “Ill-Natured Spiritual Invasion”, this
time recorded at the Abyss Studios. Furthermore, “Revelation 666” features
Galder being supplemented by Jordar (guitars), Memroch (bass), Animar and
Hoddy (drums). (Herr Stalhammar)
OPETH
“Still Life”
Peaceville Music
rating: 6 of 6
OPETH always was
the kind of band I deeply respected and adored. Well, I don’t really know
if I should praise yet one more masterpiece by these Swedish geniuses.
“Still Life” is closer to “Morningrise” than to “My Arms, Your Hearse”,
bringing a bigger doze of that inimitable “clean” voice by Mikael Akerfeldt
(as well as some growling and black metal voice, also performed by him),
more acoustic parts and variety in composition structures. Nevertheless,
“Still Life” isn’t even a bit less heavy in comparison to the older efforts
by this band, remember that! OPETH are one of the few bands left who stayed
true to themselves, however they are not into self-plagiarism at all, creating
better and better works with time instead. If you’d ask me ‘bout the most
exciting tunes “Still Life” has to offer, these are “The Moor”, “Moonlapse
Vertigo” and “Face Of Melinda”. And in the end, let me give you a little
advice: never think twice before buying a masterpiece! (Herr Stalhammar)
PAGANUS DOCTRINA /
PSEUDOSTRATIFFIED EPITHELIUM
“Ascesis Al Uno Primigenio”
/ “Sinistrous Necromanica”
American Line Productions
rating: P. D. – 4
of 6
P. E. – 3 of 6
This is a split-CD
by two black metal acts from Costa Rica… Wow, black metal truly is a disease
plaguing more and more countries… I won’t be surprised if there’re black
metal bands in the North Pole, for example… Perhaps, they even have some
kind of Inner Circle over there, ha ha! Ok, back to this CD. PAGANUS DOCTRINA
is not bad (in spite of the shitty recording… although it was done back
in 1995, so…). Their style is fast-paced black metal with pleasant guitar
leads and absolutely inhuman shrieks with few keyboards spicing the music
here and there. This band somehow brings back the nostalgia, you know…
Right after you’ve listened to it, you recall those ancient days, when
BM was a strictly underground music for the few “chosen ones”… Ooh… it
was so long ago! The second band, PSEUDOSTRATIFFIED EPITHELIUM (brrrrrh!
Try to spell this name at once!), is closer to death metal, death metal
in a South-American way, though. They’re fast, musically rather typical,
writing utterly sick lyrics, incorporating acoustics and violin into their
sound – however, it was done already by such bands as ARGENTUM or TENEBRARUM,
so I wouldn’t define it as innovation. Something tells me that both bands
will stay totally underground until they die, but it’s something that contemporary
black metal scene lacks at all, so… Check it out. (Herr Stalhammar)
RAKOTH
“Planeshift”
code666 Records
rating: 5, 5 of 6
This is the first
release by code666, the newborn Italian label, and also the first effort
from RAKOTH which (I hope so!) can be obtained worldwide… And yeah, it’s
their most successful work so far. “Planeshift” comes in the shape of digipack
CD, being comprised of ten songs. Well, actually, it’s still RAKOTH, the
one who can be distinguished from others by the sound strictly of their
own. Label describes ‘em as “dark fantasy metal” and I believe this definition
is one of the best human mind may conceive… Yes, it’s dark (and somewhat
tremendous… even romantic at times) metal, bearing the mark of BM, although
no one would ever dare to say that RAKOTH is 100% black metal act. Yes,
it’s “fantasy metal”, since most (if not all) of the lyrics are based on
fantasy-genre books by various authors, mostly by Nick Perumov (whom I
respect more than much, by the way…). To give you a hint about the way
they sound: it’s melodic and bewitching, emotional yet obscure (especially,
if talking about tracks like “Mountain God” – the most sombre tune off
this CD) metal, featuring incredibly strong “clean” voice by P.Noir and
black metallish shrieks by Rustam (also on keyboards and drumsprogramming),
mixed with enchanting flute parts and fascinating harmonies… Be sure that
THERE IS NO OTHER BAND LIKE RAKOTH! They contrived to create their own
sound and concept, moreover – they made it in a truly exciting way… You
see, you just can’t stop listening to this album after you play it in your
stereo. Magnificent effort and a very good piece for code666 to start with.
A MUST. (Herr Stalhammar)
RHYMES OF DESTRUCTION
“A Sun Revolution”
Shiver Records
rating: 5 of 6
I wonder when will
I get a pro-recorded CD from Shiver? I hope it will happen before the year
of 250000000000 takes it’s place, anyway. Ok, here’s a new recording from
Belgium’s RHYMES OF DESTRUCTION, recorded in a bit better way in comparison
to their former effort, although still (almost) horrible. Nevertheless,
RHYMES OF DESTRUCTION is, no doubts, innovative band, while “A Sun Revolution”
is one of the most interesting works I’ve heard lately. It’s black metal,
yes. Twisted, original, impressive and diverse. Unfortunately, the vocals-mix
is (nearly) awful and that programmed drumset sounds irritating, but who
cares if the music in the whole kicks ass? Want me to describe what the
hell is this band all about? You ask in vain. I never will, simply because
I can’t do that. The only thing I can tell ya: this four-piece delivers
highly original artistic black metal. And read my lips: “artistic” doesn’t
mean neither trendy nor brainless (noise). Highly recommended. (Herr Stalhammar)
RIGER
“Hamingja”
CCP Records
rating: 5 of 6
How ‘bout mixing
NOCTURNUS (or any other synth-spiced death metal) with, for instance, MYSTIC
CIRCLE, huh? We’ll get RIGER, I believe. This is one of the most successful
windfalls among those whom CCP have signed lately. While their debut work
showed us some kind of powerful death metal packed with few BM influences
and massive wall of keyboards performed the way sympho-black metal acts
usually do it, “Hamingja” turns everything into it’s contrary, hence what
we have now is BM mixed with some death metal. And I won’t say this change
is for good. No doubts, “Hamingja” appears as highly impressive and exciting
piece, however I liked the former style-combination more than this one.
Anyway, this CD should be reckoned to “highly recommended” kind! (Herr
Stalhammar)
RINGNEVOND
“Nattverd”
Edgerunner Records
Intl.
rating: 4, 5 of 6
This is a debut for
both, the label and the band, and I must admit it strikes as quite impressive
piece. I haven’t heard pure Norse black metal for ages and that’s what
this young Norwegian combo performs. And don’t get me wrong, “Nattverd”
doesn’t have anything to do with ILDJARN-alike monotonous buzz; it’s intriguing
and atmospheric stuff with actual thought put into each song, sounding
a lot similar to “For All Tid” by DIMMU BORGIR at times (huh, even the
studio is the same!). The sound is good, although I wouldn’t say it’s perfect,
however I don’t think it should be considered a shortcoming. Furthermore,
there’s a drummachine instead of human drummer, but it’s not a drawback
either. The word “crap” might go well for those annoying pseudo-falsetto
vocals – even though low-pitched voice doesn’t sound much impressive here…
it’s kinda “relief” for your ears after you have heard that King-Diamond-wannabe
attempt. But ok, generally speaking, this is good atmospheric black metal
coming from the Scandinavian fjords – nothing really special, though. (Herr
Stalhammar)
SABAOTH
“Windjourney”
Icarus Productions
rating: 6 of 6
Hey man, it looks
like Icarus Productions is one of the most successful labels at the moment,
at least judging by the CD’s they’ve sent me this time! Have you ever received
three albums simultaneously, later discovering that all of them are not
only good, but fucking excellent?! Ok, now we have SABAOTH here, the band
of Paraguay’s origin, emerging from the deepest darkness with the second
offering of theirs. First of all, I must admit that they don’t have anything
to do with South America in terms of sound… nor with Europe, though. This
duo contrived to invent the sound of their own, which can’t be reckoned
to anything. “Gothic black metal” is too weak description, you see… “Windjourney”
starts with “The Thorn And The Relief”, an instrumental tune, almost ethereal
one… and ends the same way, with “The Windjourney”. Other tracks appear
as somewhat unreal, celestial and inimitable Atmosphere, spiced with hateful
yet tranquil black metallish voice performed by Zethyaz, weightless synthetic
structures by The N (who’s also responsible for excellent drum tracks).
Guitars float in space, being supplemented by incredibly impressive “clean”
vocals and unique ambience… By the way, the word “unique” may be also regarded
to this album’s appearance; I mean, design, artwork and layout. Ok, it’s
time to finish this review and I still can’t compare them to anyone? However,
should I…? SABAOTH is SABAOTH, that is it. (Herr Stalhammar)
SCHEITAN
“Nemesis”
rating: 6 of 6
An album of the issue,
no doubts! I got high on SCHEITAN’s former effort, “Berzerk 2000”, but
this one is even better! In fact, it’s some kind of a “dark rock’n’roll”…
and it’s the rare kind of a case when I’m glad that a band got rid of black
metal sound-wise. It’s melodic, energetic yet somewhat brutal stuff packed
with male black metal shrieks and female voice. And let us not forget the
fact that each – yeah, each fucking song is as memorable as your
visit to the tax police office! Actually, I’d divide this album into 2
parts: the first one consists of some kind of… erh, a mixture of black
metal and rock’n’roll (the one which will force some of you to… dance),
while the second one appears as alternative rock / goth sounding ballad-alike
tracks featuring strictly female voice (and yes, this girl possesses definitely
an unusual timbre…) I believe, SCHEITAN doesn’t pretend to be reckoned
to the BM horde anymore, otherwise Pierre and co. would be hanged by their
balls, heh heh! Oh goddammit, I hate this review! I keep on praising this
magnificent piece, while you seem to think it’s pure crap, aren’t you?
A masterpiece, anyway.
P.S. Wondering why
didn’t I put the label’s name above the rating? Well, I don’t own neither
original nor promo CD – “Nemesis” was given to me by a friend of mine…
in the shape of CD-R lacking any info. (Herr Stalhammar)
SEA OF TRANQUILLITY
“The Omegan Ruins”
Cursed Productions
rating: 3 of 6
SEA OF TRANQUILLITY?
Did they want to say, DARK TRANQUILLITY??? Anyway, this is much worse than
f.ex. ADVERSARY, another CD I’ve received from Ray and Cursed Productions
this time. You see, the sound is good. The music is good. The musicians
are good as well. The layout is good (maybe even more than that). Everything
is good… with an exception for this album’s length. It lasts for 66 minutes,
however it seems to last for eternities! I was writing some reviews, then
having sex with my girlfriend, absorbing a couple of beers… and this CD
still didn’t seem to end. Never. When I gave a listen to “When My Dreams
Become Reality”, “Landscapes Painted In Blood” and “Self-Fragmentation”
(the best track off this work), the first three tunes here, I almost liked
it… Kinda melodic yet brutal mixture of black and death metal with few
Gothenburg-school influences… but later… Aaarrghhh! Pure torture. An earache.
If they shorted “The Omegan Ruins” to at least 40 minutes, it could get
‘5’ of ‘6’… As a conclusion: this is worthy band, BUT! MORE VARIETY, MORE
ATMOSPHERE AND LESSER AMOUNT OF SONGS is a necessity!!! (Herr Stalhammar)
SEPHIROTH
“Cathedron”
Cold Meat Industry
rating: 5, 5 of 6
What else could we
expect from Cold Meat Industry? Yep, here’s one more piece of dark ambient.
As always with the bands signed to this Swedish label – tremendous.
Everything was done by one man only, namely Ulf Soderberg, however it’s
no surprise to me – such kind of music rarely demands enlarged lineup.
One or two men, usually… Rarely more than that. “Cathedron” consists of
six anthems to darkness… and it’s really hard to say anything else. March-alike,
hymn-alike, what-the-hell-alike… shit, I don’t know. It’s “just” excellent
piece of ambient in the vein of A.C.T.U.S. and early RAISON D’ETRE, in
the same time reminding me of MORTHOUND. Excellent. (Herr Stalhammar)
SHINING OF KLIFFOTH
“Twilight Of Sehemeah”
Last Episode Productions
(provided by SureShot
Promotion)
rating: 5 of 6
Here comes a first
full-length CD from SHINING OF KLIFFOTH, a band which should be of interest
to you just because it’s lineup features Christof Niederwieser (KOROVA,
ANGIZIA) and Evgeniy (BLACK MESSIAH)… Well, not an all-star band, of course,
however I sincerely believe that everyone (yeah, EVERYONE) into black metal
should check it out only because of Christof’s participation. He’s extremely
talented composer as well as a great musician, and I guess that’s the reason
why this CD strikes as definitely astounding piece. It’s rather difficult
to describe SHINING OF KLIFFOTH’s style in few words… kinda orchestral
black metal (far from being “sympho-black”, though!) with plenty of vanguard
elements. No, it doesn’t have anything to do with KOROVA as you could think!
It’s just… different. What I like most, each instrument seems to be the
leading one, the sort of thing I consider quite rare, especially when it
comes to BM. There’re plenty of various singing styles here, from usual
black metal voice to high-pitched screaming, from those easily recognizable
“clean” vocals by Christof to barryton-alike voice… as well as certain
growls, which get the leadership on the track “Purgatory” (even though,
those voices on “The Rose Of Clotted Light” sound somehow irritating…).
Generally speaking, in musical aspect this is very impressive, diverse
and innovative CD (lots of skillfully played solos and tempo changes, unusual-sounding
and incredibly powerful drumming… should I go on with all these praises?
I guess not), while lyrically… hey, they sing in four languages simultaneously!
English, German, Italian and… guess what? Yeah, Russian! Looks like those
involved in black metal in Austria also get high on my native language…
and I still can’t really understand why. However, we have distracted a
bit. I have one more thing left to say In regards to lyrics featured on
“Twilight Of Sehemeah”… as you already probably figured out yourselves,
they deal mainly with occult subjects, although it might be interesting
to know that four tracks out of eleven are based on Dante’s “Divine Comedy”…
(Herr Stalhammar)
SKEPTICISM
“Aes”
Red Stream Records
rating: 6 of 6
Here comes the second
MCD from this unique Finnish act… In fact, “Aes” is a one-song-album. It
features one single track that lasts for all eternities… or, to be exact,
for 28 minutes… nevertheless, it never becomes boring and when it ends
you’re still craving for more. For those who do not know yet what I’m talking
about, SKEPTICISM perform the sort of music that is somewhat similar to
that of ESOTERIC and, perhaps, UNHOLY. It’s as extremely slow as atmospheric
and grim. Those who think of committing a suicide though still don’t know
if they should do it or not, listen to SKEPTICISM – and you’ll get the
only right answer: “yes”. Is it certain supreme force that helps them to
create all their efforts? I can’t believe that it were just few homo sapiens
who managed to unleash such a perfect grimness… (Herr Stalhammar)
T666
“Troops Of Satan”
T666 Deathmetal Company
rating: 6 of 6
This is rather new
bandname to my ears, however these neophytes managed to create quite excellent
piece of the Black Art. T666 is a foursome playing orthodox unholy death
metal heavily reminding me of early DEICIDE, while vocals are those, more
of CANNIBAL CORPSE. You won’t find anything new or special while listening
to this (oh so short!) MCD, however one might definitely enjoy it, the
one who cares less of originality, making emphasis on sheer brutality and
hatred trasformed into musical canvas. Well, anyway, I like it a lot. “Troops
Of Satan” features three tracks (“Comrades In Slaughter”, “Execute All
Christians” and “Smash The Cross”) with brilliant sound and rather stupid
lyrics (so what?) and will appeal to all the lovers of such stuff as SINISTER,
DEICIDE, VADER and alikes. By the way, you’re wondering why did I include
this review in the “black metal” section? Everything’s utmost simple. I
reckon T666 to so-called “true death metal” – and in my view, this movement
has much more in common with BM than “modern” death metal, such as DESULTORY.
Of course, there’re lots of bands who are true to their beliefs, like ASPHYX,
FLESHCRAWL or INTERNAL BLEEDING, however they don’t have 500% antichristian
message behind ‘em.
Here’s the email
address of the band as well as their URL, so that you could contact ‘em
personally.

TARTAROS
“The Red Jewel”
Necropolis Records
Rating: 4 of 6
A bit weird-sounding
black metal similar to that of EMPEROR (1997 – 2000 era), also being somewhat
close to the latest reincarnation of CARPE TENEBRUM. Rather good and sometimes
exciting, however I doubt if will this CD a re-listening session too soon…
(Herr Stalhammar)
TERROR 2000
“Slaughterhouse Supremacy”
Scarlet / BL Music
rating: 4 of 6
Speed Strid strikes
again, heh heh! Here we have one more neophyte act spawned by conglomeration
between two famous Swedish bands’ members, such as SOILWORK and DARKANE.
Guess what kind of stuff they have prepared for you? Yep, it’s violent
thrash / black metal with inimitable vokills by Strid, furious riffing
cascades, hammering drums, raw and torturous atmosphere as well as influences
taken from (early) AT THE GATES, (early) ENTOMBED as well as Bay Area thrash…
If this is what modern thrash metal should sound alike, I don’t mind. I
only hope there will be more bands like TERROR 2000, than untalented kids
unable to handle their instruments, playing crap like CRANIUM or DESEKRATOR.
(Herr Stalhammar)
THROES OF DAWN
“Binding Of The Spirit”
Avantgarde Music
rating: -
Oops. Some time ago
I’ve got two CD’s from Woodcut, one of them by THROES OF DAWN and second
by THYRANE. Few issues after we have the same picture, differing only when
it comes to record labels. THYRANE (see below) still collaborates with
Woodcut, whilst THROES OF DAWN is now signed to Italy’s Avantgarde Music.
Well, it’s really hard to say anything concerning this CD, since it looks
like I told you everything I wanted to while reviewing their previous effort…
“Binding Of The Spirit” is recognizable, yet far from being original, Finnish
black metal, melodic and simultaneously – aggressive, mostly mid-paced,
synth-spiced… well, not only “spiced”. It’s totally soaked with synthetic
atmospheres, however (thanks god in hell) the sound in the whole is still
based on (powerfully sounding) guitars. Production is excellent, musicians
know what they’re doing and the same goes for singer, occasionally using
(quite pleasant) “clean” voice. This is not a jewel, but if you like such
acts as THY SERPENT, THYRANE, … AND OCEANS, CATAMENIA, FAERGHAIL or VORDVEN
(and hundreds more), check it out. If you’re not into aforementioned bands…
check it out anyway. Who said that you have to lack any typicality to make
your stuff worthy enough? At least, it's not that anonymous as f.ex. ALGHAZANTH...
(Herr Stalhammar)
THYRANE
“Symphonies Of Infernality”
Woodcut Records
rating: 5 of 6
“Beneath The Banner
Of The Unholy Satan’s Cult”, “Devil Messiah”, “Satanist”, “In The Shape
Of A Demon” – these are some of the song titles. But no, DARKTHRONE-loving
kids, it’s not for you. Even though “Symphonies Of Infernality” is true-to-the-core
100000% black metal, there’re absolutely no traces of primitivism or rawness
as one could expect. This band performs top-notch symphonic black metal
– yeah, “symphonic”, however I doubt if there’s anyone who will dare to
use the term “commercial” in regards to THYRANE. They stay true to their
roots without limiting themselves in terms of the inspiration sources and
stuff. What’s most amusing concerning this band is the wide age spectrum
between the youngest and the oldest member: Blastmor is 20, whilst Daemon
is 35 years old! If this band survives in at least ten years, it might
be interesting to look at the 45-years old man wearing corpse-paint and
headbanging on the stage… Oh, nevermind anyway. To say the least, this
is an excellent CD, so buy it now! (Herr Stalhammar)
TRISTANIA
“Beyond The Veil”
Napalm Records
rating: 6 of 6
Yet one more masterpiece.
Everything TRISTANIA have released so far appeared as truly impressive,
however this CD beats all their previous works. This Norwegian band created
undoubtedly unique work, combining such styles as black, doom and gothic
metal with classical music and vanguard… It’s useless to describe what
this effort is all about… however, let’s try to do it… Absolutely amazing
female passages by Vibeke… growls, black metallish shrieks and powerful
low-pitched “clean” vocals performed by Morten… astounding IMMORTAL-alike
drumming (circa “Battles In The North”)… genius (read my lips – G E N I
U S !!!!!!!!!!!!) synth arrangements… and, of course, tremendous guitar
leads… This album is SO various, but just like “Higher Art Of Rebellion”
by AGATHODAIMON, this variety doesn’t provoke separation of the whole musical
canvas. Even THERION with their latest CD (“Deggial”) should work hard
to reach the level of TRISTANIA. Hey there, listen to me carefully when
I’m saying that “Beyond The Veil” is much more than simply a masterpiece!
This is genius album, one of the best works I’ve heard for the last couple
of years…
P. S. And don’t ask
me why did I put this review in a “black metal” section, better find out
yourselves after listening to this piece of supreme metal art… TRISTANIA
always were closer to BM, than to doom / death anyway…
(Herr Stalhammar)
TUATHA DE DANANN
“Tuatha De Danann”
Heavy Metal Rock
rating: 5 of 6
Folkish mixture of
black and heavy metal inspired by Irish sagas coming from Brazil??? With
a negro being one of the bandmembers??? Ehm, it’s not bad anyway. Moreover,
I’d say it’s good. Despite that cartoonish artwork… however, I wouldn’t
say it’s a huge shortcoming, since music is rather splendid. This CD includes
some new recordings along with four tracks taken off their demo tape (“Faeryage”).
And what’s most surprisingly, these older tracks sound much more impressive,
perhaps due to the fact vocals on “Faeryage” tunes sound a lot more exciting.
Generally speaking, TUATHA DE DANANN perform an intriguing form of metal,
strongly influenced by Irish folklore and mythology, kinda mixture of (as
said above) heavy and black metal as well as some doom spice. In the whole,
this album is quite various, or more likely – REALLY DIVERSE. Vocals vary
from “clean” singing (sometimes extremely pleasant when sung in a high-pitched
voice) through (plenty of) male choirs (which don’t have anything to do
with those “classic” pseudo-viking howling, though) to either mild growling
or black metal-alike screams (mild ones as well). There’re plenty of different
non-metal instruments incorporated, even though TUATHA DE DANANN manage
to stay enough brutal… although, it’s more so-called “tribal” music, than
metal… still staying metal. If you get what I mean, of course. All in all,
this is undoubtedly interesting effort, definitely worth enough to listen
to. Sort of Brazilian RAGNAROK (I mean UK’s RAGNAROK), only “clean” vocals
are much better here. Expect the interview coming in the next issue and
while now order this CD from Heavy Metal Rock: hmrock@netamericana.com.br
At least, it won’t
bore you down. Moreover, it will intrigue you. I guess, it’s kind of a
rare thing nowadays, don’t you think so? (Herr Stalhammar)
VINTERSORG
“Odemarkens Son”
Napalm Records
rating: 5, 5 of 6
Wow, two stunning
CD’s unleashed during one single year! Hail to thee, Vintersorg! I’m not
going to make this review long, since all those who’d like to get acquainted
with this undoubtedly outstanding band should check out my reviews on it’s
former efforts (debut MCD and “Till Fjalls” CD ’99). I will say only few
words regarding the changes “Odemarkens Son” brought in VINTERSORG’s sound.
Speaking generally, it became less black metallish, more emphasized on
traditional heavy metal elements, y’know… Also, the songs are much more
memorable and better performed (the same goes for vocals). All in all,
very interesting, original and exciting CD. (Herr Stalhammar)
ZARATUSTRA
“It Was A Night”
Counter Attack
rating: 5 of 6
Black metal from
Bulgaria? Good black metal from Bulgaria??? Hey, whatta surprise! Somewhat
familiar bandname, by the way, ha ha! Well, ok, let’s better discuss this
CD for a while. ZARATUSTRA develop rather impressive form of black metal.
It’s enough melodic yet furious and hateful, i.e. no commercial crap here!
It reminds me of early SATYRICON at times, although it’s definitely different.
The keyboards are present here, however I wouldn’t say that these guys
make emphasis on synths, this is more likely a “guitar music”. The sound
is rather average, although it’s enough pleasant for the ear, especially
taking into account the fact that this band comes from such a country as
Bulgaria. “It Was A Night” lasts for almost 70 minutes, however it never
gets boring. All of the nine songs are mostly mid-paced with mesmerizing,
yet quite simple synth-parts (heavily reminding me of BURZUM (“Hvis Lyset
Tar Oss” and “Det Som Engang Var” era)), sometimes turning into pseudo-flute
passages. Vocals vary from hateful screams to meditative declamations through
late AMORPHIS-alike “clean” voice with few female voice lines in between.
All guys can handle their instruments properly – moreover, even if I compared
ZARATUSTRA to few other bands, I’d say that they’re highly original (!)
anyway. Highly recommended. (Herr Stalhammar)
ÂÅ×Å (VECHE)
“Veche”
Oriana Productions
rating: 3, 5 of 6
“What you’ll hear
isn’t a result of long considerations or meditations. It’s intuition and
first feelings, exposed at the gathering of NOKTURNAL MORTUM and LUCIFUGUM”.
Ok, let it be the way they want to… Actually, I expected it to be some
kind of harsh and furious black metal, however “Veche” turned out as a
bit different sort of stuff. This MC-album brings four really long tracks
of mystic black metal with plenty of electronic sounds incorporated, so
sometimes it sounds more like an ambient thing. All of the songs are VERY
atmospheric, hence this MC-album sounds nearly mesmerizing at times… however,
it’s was recorded at a rehearsal only, therefore sound sucks incredibly…
