Is “Gods Of Creation,
Death And Afterlife” the CD you’ve made your
debut with? Furthermore,
could you please also give us a summarized bio, as well as telling what’s
the band been up to lately?
- Yes, the "Gods..." CD is our debut. Our 2nd will be out by the end of the year. Formed in late '94, signed to Dwell in '99, toured with SKINLESS & INCANTATION in March of 2000, have performed at Milwaukee Metalfest 2 years, November to Dismember 2000 & Ohio Death fest 2000. Currently working on new material to be released in late 2001.
“Coffin
Texts” definitely is the kind of moniker which doesn’t have anything to
do with cliches. Who came up with this name, and what does it stand for
in your own interpretation?
- The name was thought up by a friend of mine named Carlos Gonzalez from the band DEMOLITION (RIP). COFFIN TEXTS are the inscriptions engraved on Pharoh's coffin's in Egyptian times. They are spells and incantation's to guide the souls of the kings to eternal Bliss & not death in the afterlife. My interpetation of it is for all souls living and not dead should reflect on our lives, so we can all live in eternal bliss after death & prepare for our demise and not for the next day in our life, but death.
Does the way you’ve
entitled the latest work of yours, reflect the
atmosphere you
attempted to force on “Gods…”?
- We will always reflect on our last release to link them together, in concept & the name COFFIN TEXTS. They will always relate.
“Gods…” features a couple of synth-lines here and there (as well as some kind of a keyboard-interlude (“The Grand Gallery”, to be exact)); hence aren’t you planning to invite a permanent keyboardist? Believe me, if “Gods…” was spiced with synths all the way through (with a right approach of course… definitely not the way DIMMU BORGIR do it), it would sound even more impressive and obviously thousand times grimmer!
- We put those parts in just to give certain part's a bit of flavor, small parts only. As for hiring a full time keyboardist, I would say no to, because we have always been a 3 piece band & the presents of a 4 would make it ocward.
“Gods…”
literally breathes with Egyptian mythological (and historical) cycle. Everything,
starting with it’s appearance and ending with musical canvas, every goddamn
thing is utterly impregnated with it’s very essence! What raised such an
interest in Egypt and everything pertinent to it, in you? Furthermore,
it seems like this is the kind of subject more or less popular among US’
death and black metal acts (let’s recall NILE or AURORA BOREALIS); is there
any kind of reasonable explanation for this phenomena?
- We came out with that concept in 1994, as for everyone else, I can't say, but we have had it since we got the name, ask anyone who has been in the scene, like IMMOLATION, MORBID ANGEL, SADISTIC INTENT.
Aren’t you feared to be accused in exploiting the theme which has already been broached by so many acts?
- We used it for the "Gods...", the next release will be taking it to the next level, beyond the material world & into the Unseen World.
Covering SLAYER and BLACK SABBATH… Whose idea was that? You know, I was completely blown away by the way you’ve interpreted “Disturbing The Priest”!
- Thank you. We took our time on those tributes, and we're glad that so many people like our version's of these classics. We put those songs on the "Gods..." release due to the fact that we were going to record the 6 songs with 3 extra's to make a complete 8 for a full lenght release, but our guitarist broke his finger right before we were supposed to enter the studio. we were left with 1 alternative, that was to release the '96 demo with 2 tribute songs and release it.
Do you consider COFFIN TEXTS a commercially successful band?
- No!
Is the “amalgamation of atmospheric death and black metal”-definition ok with you, when it comes to COFFIN TEXTS?
- Please, not black metal. Atmospheric death yes, but black metal is very distict & we have no trace of that type of music in ours.
If I’m not mistaken, all of you are of Latin-American origin, and hence the question arises: can you explain why there’s such a big amount of Latinos involved in a US’ death and black metal scene?
- Yes, we are all Mexican's. As for the large amount in the scene, all I can say is that all the mexican's in the scene are into it from the heart and are true 'SATANIC HISPANIC's".
How
did you come to enter Dwell Records’ roster? Do you consider your collaboration
successful?
- Jerry Battle is the person responsible for our signing to Dwell. We are not working with that label no longer, due to the bullshit & greed that label has exposed. Fuck Dwell, prepare for WORLD WAR 3.
By the way, do you have an idea of why the hell do they bring forth the light such an enormous number of tribute CDs?!?! A new one almost each weak, man!
- That's another reson why we don't want anything to do with them.
How many compilations have you participated in, so far?
- I'd say about 5.
“The Call Of Ktulu”, definitely an interesting (and wise) choice! I haven’t ever heard anyone covering this song (with one and only exception for the band I take part in, ROSSOMAHAAR… In our case it was renamed with lyrics added, though). Why did you decide to cover exactly this tune (and why does the sound suck so bad, in contrast to “Gods…” CD)? What’s your view on this (“Overload 2”) comp in the whole?
- The recording was shit, we know. We covered that song for 2 reason's - 1. I'm a big Cliff Burton fan and that song is one of the songs I thought he kicked ass on. 2. We only had so many songs to pick from, due to the fact that alot of them we taken already.
Do you know anything regarding Russia? Any metal bands coming from the country of mine you’ve heard lately?
- No. I haven't. If you know of any bands that are worth listening to, send me a demo. We here at WORLD WAR 3 music are very open to good death / black / speed metal.
Isn’t it time to
wrap up our chat? I believe, “yes” should be the
answer, huh? Would
you like to add anything?
- Yes, thank you Kai for you support and
patience. Horns up to everyone in RUSSIA. If anyone has problems obtaining
the "Gods..." CD, send an email to Dwell records and demand that they get
distro out there, FUCKIN' BASTARDS!! Any questions, email me at: coffintexts2112@hotmail.com
