Greetings…! Since I’m completely unfamiliar with any facts regarding INDUNGEON's bio, I believe it’s nice if you will enlighten us concerning this subject…
Jonas: INDUNGEON came to existence during early 1996 with the aim of creating metal in sense of death and destruction. The maniacal metal-machine was on wheels and a five track debut demo was recorded in July `96 (officially never released) in Nidengate Studio. The Indungeon squadrons razor sharp intentions did in fact already in the very last days of `96 end up in a signed agreement with the American label Full Moon Productions. Short after, in April `97, the debut full-length album was laid on tape, this time in Hypersonic Studio now known as Backbone Studio. This album “Machinegunnery of Doom" was programmed with ten tracks of deathy thrash metal and F.M.P. pounced the world with it's release in Feb. `98. INDUNGEON kept the going, focused on the making of yet another album, time passed and the album was set for recording and meanwhile a new agreement was established with the German label Invasion Records. INDUNGEON entered the same studio as on the "Gunnery..." album in Dec. `98 and out came "The Misanthropocalypse”! This album was eventually already out in March 1999, it contains eight tracks of uncompromising metal.
What about lyrical concept behind the band? Such songs titles as “Battletank No. 1”, “Cybergenetic Supermind”, “Machinegunnery Of Doom” or “Propaganda Of War” obviously tell us that you don’t have anything to do with typical black metal themes…
Jonas: Yes, that´s true, we do not have anything to do with black metal as for lyrics and also for the greater parts of our music. Our lyrical concept is built upon war, death and destruction to explain it easily, and that has obviously, as you said, nothing to do with BM. Our lyrics are more in the vien of apocalyptic stuff both of past, present and future and are therefor also spread within a wide theme, so each lyric stands for it self so to say and they can differ quite a lot from each other. The lyrics is to 99% written by Stefan and he´s not too fond of black metal in any way and that speaks pretty much of the reason of this matter.
Ok, this one goes for the music of yours. It’s surprisingly melodic – I mean, after looking at the song titles I expected much more brutal and aggressive stuff – bearing few reminiscences of 80’s thrash metal… How would you explain such a contrast between musical and lyrical parts of the band and, also, whom (or what) would you name as your principal source of inspiration?
Jonas: This is something I´ve thought about as well and I guess the answer is that this is just the way it went during our existence and it turns out pretty melodic at times which makes surprised even us. So this contrast isn´t planned, it is a part of the musical progression to a more melodic performance while the lyrics somewhat has remained the same since the beginning of INDUNGEON. So, I guess on the next release there will be something else that´s of contrast but the way I see it is just that it gets more interesting as things don´t get repeated, and as well as it has contrasts it´s just great as one don´t really get what´s expected which is often too obvious in some genres. Inspiration, well it´s hard to say just one or a couple as we´re very different individuals within the band, but anyway, here´s some: the WWars and such happenings, the eighties metal scene as well as a lot of metal of today etc. You know it´s very much but some may be clear while getting hold of our albums.
INDUNGEON features Karl and Stefan from MITHOTYN and I wonder what kind of relationship is between your bands? Are you in contact with other band members? Also, what about their latest album?
Jonas: The relationship in between these bands (THY PRIMORDIAL / MITHOTYN) (Jonas and Micke also play in THY PRIMORDIAL - ED) are really good, all members of the bands know each other quite well and we gather at parties and such for beers and metal once in awhile. So yes we´re in contact with all members now and then/more or less. And for the latest MITHOTYN album, it´s called “Gathered Around The Oaken Tabel”, 11 track of vikingish metal pretty much in the same vein as the previous album. Really wellplayed and professional release to swing some beers over, Oouups sorry Stefan, kill me, I meant ale or mead!!!!
There’s one really strange (perhaps, ‘weird’ is more appropriate word here) thing regarding INDUNGEON… The lineup on “Machinegunnery Of Doom” looks like ‘L.V. Managarmr, Asmodeus, Cethulhv and Mournlord’ while “The Misanthropocalypse” is performed by the persons using their real names…! Should the listener be the one to figure out who is who…???
Jonas: No it´s not meant that anyone´s to figure out who´s who, we fealt that useing our alias didn´t fill the purpose intended so we simply therefore while we left FMP dropped our alias. The people is the same in the band except for that me and Stefan switched instruments. But as we´re talking of this I can give you the great key to the treasure: L.V. Managarmr – Stefan W., Asmodeus - Micke A., Cethulhv - Jonas A. and last Mournlord - Karl B.! We should of course have made some sort of statement on the album but that was nothing we thought of at that time and therefore it may be strange or wierd that the lineup was changed without mentioning so but I don´t think anyone really cares, as it was a good thing to do at least regarding to our selves.
I
really like that inlay photo (where you stand around the old Volkswagen
with ‘GER 666’ number-plate)! Whose idea was that? And where did you take
that car?
Jonas: This killer-car is in the possession of Karl Beckman, and it has not only a great plate, it´s also painted on the side with our kind of trademark, I.D. 666, so it´s a nice fucking car famous all over the place we live. Once one have seen it one won´t forget it! The idea of using it for the photosession was agreed within the band while figureing out what to do. So we drove away to some fucking sand-factory or something like that and placed the car in the hills. It turned out just great and quite original as well!
Why did you leave Fullmoon Productions? Any special reasons for that…? Furthermore, do you consider Invasion Records to be the best choice possible at the moment?
Jonas: We left F.M.P. due to that we felt that they didn´t fill that which we expected. Such things as delays and broken promisses occured quite often and that made us grew tired of pretty much everything. There was no hard feelings either from us nor from FMP, both parts agreed on breaking the contract so we´re still friends and everything is cool. FMP was though a good label to start with for INDUNGEON but as time went we demanded more and thus it kind of fell apart but we have much to thank FMP for anyway. Well I do not consider Invasion as the best choise, though a really good one and at that moment the only choise as we were in the studio while breaking the contract with FMP. So it was really a matter of acting fast to get the deal done or stick to Fullmoon and thus it became Invasion as they´ve been interested before.
What about “The Misanthropocalypse” promotion tours? Have you done any? If yes, how did they go? Where were the best shows? What was your favorite city / country?
Jonas: We´ve yet not performed any live gigs at all so by now I can not answer this question to obvious reasons. But we do want to do some gigs beyond the borders of Sweden, may come to reality one day, who knows.
Such term as ‘misanthropy’ seems to be quite popular among those who perform or listen to black metal nowadays, moreover – it looks like you’re also into this kind of stuff…
Jonas: Certainly, more or less, misanthropy or anti-filanthropy towards people outside ones own allied is to me obvious, as I really can´t give much for people which I´ve not chosen to interfere in my life, I can´t give them respect and thereby I do not like them, suck what gains ones own pleasure out of them, then they´re useable at least. To a sertain extent one ofcourse have to face many of these people anyway saying not is just pathetic but with a disdainful smile everything´s cool. Anyway I guess you refer to the title of the album which is fiction and describes the Misanthropes’ apocalypse, as simple as that, the destoyer of earth.
I wonder about the person named Thord Fransson… Both, THY PRIMORDIAL and INDUNGEON’s efforts feature pics shot by him, so… Who is he? Just a friend of yours or what?
Jonas: I think,
Micke should answer this one...
Micke: Thord
Fransson is a close friend of mine. He has helped me and the bands with
different things for several years. He took the photos for the “Under Iskall
Trollmåne” album, as well as for both the INDUNGEON albums . Before
I had my own computer, he also took care of our emails. He also did the
homepages for both INDUNGEON and THY PRIMORDIAL. Nowadays he is still involved
in the html production, but I do most of the stuff by myself. He has nothing
to do with the scene at all otherwise then that.
Aaarggh, this interview finally comes to it’s logical end! Therefore, if you’d like to say anything in conclusion, do it here…
Both: Well, thanks for the interview, Kai. See you………
