You have started back in 1985, however it took almost 14 years to make your debut with a full-length CD. You see, it sounds incredible! Usually, it takes the band maximum 2 - 3 years to bring forth the light their first-ever disk. I simply can't proceed with questions, since the word «WHY» is stuck in my mind.
- First of all, I'd like to thank you for your support. The reason that it took so long is because we are a humble group in those years 85-90 we never got support of labels, the studios never wanted to record metal, because of the economic situation, we never could effort a guitar or to record demos it was very expensive we just had to rehearse in studios with very bad sound, It was very hard in those days now everything is much better.
May I as well wonder, why did it take you seven years to release only a demo («Mundo Interior»)?
- As I already told you KRANIUM was a poor band, nobody wanted to record even demos for metal band because they said that it will never sell, but there always has been a big scene in Peru, with a lot good bands and magazines. But I think in Russia it was difficult for the scene in the communist days too (yes - ED).
Finally you've reached a record deal with Plasmatica, however it's pretty strange to see Swedish label signing a band from Peru anyway!
- The owner of Plasmatica Records is a friend from Peru, his name is Carlos Arana, he heard our "Dos Sonrisas..." Ep and he asked us to sign for his label.
I used to learn study Spanish previously, but I'm too bad in it to get into the lyrics of yours, so perhaps you would enlighten me in regards to subjects they deal with? Furthermore, isn't it an ancient Incan language used in "El Obraje"?
* Yana Raymi = Its Quecha = Dark Dance
* Manos Cruzadas = About a mystical Pre-Inka
Temple
* No Te Tortures = Don't Torture Yourself
= About depressive people
* El Obraje = Its about the ancient formers
that work in the Inka culture
* Guerreros = Warriors = The battles against
the conquerors
* Testimonios = Testimonies = Its about
the legend of the creation of Inka's empire
* Reencarnacion = Reincarnation
* Envuelto En El Silencio = Envolved In
The Silence = About of the solitude
* Markawasi = Its Quechua too = House Of
Rocks = Is a mistycal place in the Andean, are mountains rocks in shape
of persons or animals, some say that they where made by UFO
* Dos Sonrisas Una Lagrima = Two Smiles,
One Tear = Its when a friend passes away
The part in quechua speach ancient INKA language
"It will come, yes it will come
I'm the INKA (The King) and I will
see flowrn Macchu Picchu (The sacred city)
and Saccayhuaman and Ollantaytambo (two
fortresses)
And throw his life of wisdom Qosqo
Till the last corner in the land of the
sun"
All of you (with an exception for Fernando and Daniel) seem to play many traditional and alike instruments besides usual ones. So how did it turn out that most of KRANIUM crew appear as multi-instrumentalists, moreover, the ones possessing the skills to play definitely rare instruments!
- We just like to play different instruments and specially our ancient instruments: Quena, Zampoca (PanFlute in others sites) and Chakjchas.
Let
me tell you that "Testimonios" won "best CD appearance" award in the former
issue of my magazine. Yes, the artwork, as well as the layout in the whole,
is utterly fantastic! Where did you take those pictures (the ones inside
the booklet) and what do they stand for? Furthermore, what does the artwork
image symbolize?
- Thank for your opinion: The front picture is an old tunik of the old civilization MOCHICA (Pre-Inka), in MANOS CRUZADAS (crossed hands meens the unity of the Inkas), in EL OBRAJE (the picture is one of the windows of Macchu Picchu), GUERREROS (is a paint of the old warrior draw in the Temples), TESTIMONIOS (is a sun that was the god WIRACOCHA) and REENCARNACION (mummy of the INKA king).
Do you think being
a South-American band is in any way a positive or
negative thing,
compared to being, say, a European band?
- I think in Europe you have more possibilities to move more your stuff, your production, and your band too, but the people in the Peruvian scene put a lot of effort in the scene and they have a lot of respect for the old bands.
What or who is a "musician"? Do you consider yourself to be the one?
- For us it is a person that works and learns of their root and our roots are metal, classic heavy rock and folk music of our ancestors.
It might be interesting to learn your view upon religion in the whole as well as christianity and heathendom in particular.
- Fore us it is part of our culture we don't believe in the Sun, Mother Earth (Mama-Pacha) like in the old days, but we respect a lot of the ancient beliefs like part of our legacy and mysticism. Some of our members our atheits and other agnostics. I dont know every one has their point of view. What I dont like the cristianity is that is to dominant in Southamerica is one of the continent with more believers of christ in the world.
What about the notion of "pure truth"? Do you agree with those saying truth is unique? How can one either find or discover it?
- For me the "pure truth" doesn't exist, that if it can exist it is the sincerity, but if we speak about the sincerity, I believe that it is good for applying it in all activity that you make.
The concepts of "good" and "evil" that are often being discussed now. Too often, I'd say. However, let me wonder if you would agree with me saying these are not so stable issues? You see, f.ex. I defend either myself or the ones I love, killing someone - it's "good" for me. But everything's quite the contrary for that "someone". Of course, it's a simplified example, but the principal idea is the same.
- The concept of "good" and "evil", it will always be discussed, if you give me that example, I tell you, each one has their point of view, but I am not christian, and in this world this fact to defend, one should not make something thinking of the bad thing for the other one, but neither it is correct that you allow to harm without responding.
How about giving us a short preview on the ancient history of the land now called Peru...? I guess, you should be well acquainted with it.
- Well, give you a short history, they say that our gods call Manco Capac and Mama Ocllo came from the Lake Titicaca and they knowledge of the caveman. So than came civilizations and the empire was born. I had different kind of life, still like in every part of the world King (INKA), Generals, priest (Curaca), middle class and slaves. The formers, they had their rules and new a lot of fisics to bild cities in the top of the mountains (andean), it was a very intelligent civilization, than like any empire it began to fall down and in decadence of the empire came the spanish conquerors and had almost all America salves for 500 years, than we fight and through then from Southamerica.
What's life in Peru nowadays alike?
- The life style is a little bit shitty because there are no jobs and a lot of prejudice and racial discrimination enter the same Peruvians (it's absurd!!!!!!), all are already take and the day is very low it is better then 15 years ago because we had terrorism in those time it was worse. We are a little bit better and trying to progress.
Do you know anything regarding Russia? What is your attitude to the country of mine as well as it's people? Any Russian bands you've heard lately?
- I dont know to much about the russian's metal bands, I heard VOMIC CUNT, along time ago and MENTAL HOME, and MELISSA, I always same videos of Ozzy Osbourne, SCORPIONS, METALLICA, I dont know to much. Once I met I wishguy and he told me that its very good scene and every day is more great. I know its a big country and it passed a lot of Deaths, Sorrows in the communist regime. It must been very difficult in those days because I think I'm not so sure you could'nt hear rock'n roll, because it was against the party. But could you tell me a little bit more to have more information...
It's up to you to fill these lines. The last ones.
- Thank again for your support, we hope that one day we play in your country. We salute all Russia's headbangers and metalheads, and remember LONG LIVE TO EXTREME ROCK'N ROLL and HAIL METAL!!!!!!!!!!!
