To start with, let me admit that MAHAVATAR definitely is not a regular band, at least judging by it's lineup - Israeli singer, Jamaican guitarist and a drummer of Polish origin? All of you live in New York, I suppose; otherwise I can't really figure out how you're rehearsing?
- We have managed to invent a new language to communicate ideas, much of which incorporates the word "thing", eventually we understand each other.
By the way, is the bass player's place still vacant?
- We now have Eddie Gasior on bass.
You've
just released a demo CD. What kind of feedback have you received?
- So far, all the feedback has been very positive.
It's undoubtedly difficult to find a proper stylistic definition when it comes to MAHAVATAR; at least one shouldnšt ever attempt to describe what the hell is MAHAVATAR in order to avoid getting into trouble. What's your own interpretation of the genre your band can be possibly reckoned to? F.ex., is gothic "tribal death metal" ok with you?
- Yes, the fact that others find it difficult to describe our sound has become a common motif in all the reviews wešve received thus far. This is probably due to the fact that MAHAVATAR are influenced by all music. With members coming from all over the world adding their different flavors to the mix, this interaction fuels the energy that produces the sound of MAHAVATAR. Gothic tribal death metal? Sure, why not.
Ok, it's pretty much a mess when it comes to MAHAVATAR's music, but what about the lyrical canvas? Whatšs the principal subject it deals with?
- Spiritual revolution and expanding into the unexplored consciousness. A call to wake up and not be afraid of a massive awakening of human ability "to believe in the unbelievable" and of course personal experiences.
Where does all this oriental stuff come from? What are you particularly influenced by, composing a song? Does it happen spontaneously?
- Lizza (the singer - ED) is from the Middle East and observed a lot of Arabic music. Karla has written music with an oriental flavor from the moment she picked up the guitar. Peter is a versatile drummer and loves to incorporate his tribal rhythms to our sound and Eddie seems to have a natural feel for it. We all walk around with ideas in our head, but what happens most times in the studio is quite spontaneous. Every song has it's own energy and takes it's own life and rhythm. We feed off of each other and some magical power glues it all together.
Describe
each of the songs off "Demo 2000" not the usual way, but using colors as
well as the whole variety of uman sensations. Got what I mean?
- All songs represent a notch in the rainbow of life. We all know that music is the language of the universe even before math, so it touches all emotions and goes beyond mere sensations.
There're two females and one male in the band. Doesn't it affect MAHAVATAR in any way?
- We don't feel there is a difference between male and female with respect to the musical creation. The language of music is universal.
By the way, where does this word, Mahavatar, comes from, and what does it stand for?
- The origin of the word "Mahavatar" is in India. It is an energy that doesn't need anything but itself to survive... deathlessness. It represents immortality and has evolved into Mind Hypnotic Vision Towards Revolution which basically deals with similar subjects.
What was the worst review on your works you've read?
- We haven't had one yet.
Pragmatism and cynicism or sensibility and humaneness?
- Sensibility and humanness.
What's your opinion on cosmopolitan nations literally having no roots or whatsoever?
- Every country has it's own roots and there are some nations that have deeper roots than others. On the other hand, rootless soil produces hydro grown, so...
Wouldn't
we witness a certain kind of inevitably approaching global cataclysm in
the nearest time to come, what do you think?
- Listen to the message of "Time Has Come".
Do you know anything regarding Russia? Any metal bands coming from the country of mine youšve heard lately?
- Sure, Chekov, Stalin, Leningrad, Communism, Siberia, Stolychnaya and we wanna play there! Karla knows some bands like MENTAL HOME, NOKTURNAL MORTUM (Ukraine), RAKOTH, SATARIAL, SUNCHARIOT, GODS TOWER (Belarus), MELISSA, etc...
Seems like we've
reached the end of the questionnaire. What a mess.
Nevertheless,
here's a place for you to say anything you wanted but had no chance to?
- Kai, we'd like to thank you for this excellent interview. We wish you continued success with Vae Solis Web Magazine. Hail to all our Russian fans! Listen to the sounds and join the revolution.
