Mortiis comments on
Euronymous' murder

As everyone of you should remember, Oystein Aarseth (a.k.a. Euronymous) was murdered by Varg Vikernes (a.k.a. Count Grishknackh) on the 10th of August 1993… And here comes, taken from the third issue of “I Came From Darkness” magazine, Mortiis opinion on what happened. All the below-cited was said back in 1995, and I believe Havard’s views could change throughout times that passed since then, however… I guess, it might be interesting to read anyway…

“A few months before the murder of Euronymous, I remember he told me during a conversation «Grishnackh is a man it's best to have on one's side»... I saw no enemyship between the two of them... Few weeks later he was saying that Vikernes was getting out of control... starting to think himself invincible, loosing grip of reality... He said that «something» was going to happen soon. And the best thing was to stay as far away as possible.
Not long afterwards... Euronymous called us up (me and my girlfriend Ilsa - by media proclaimed (ex-)girlfriend of Vikernes). Saying that now he's had enough! Enough bullshit from Grishnackh (later we learned that Grishnackh had been sending out tons of bullshit lies about Euronymous - something people also told Euronymous). I suspect, this had been going on for a while until he felt he'd had enough shit! This was someday early August. Only few days later he called again, and told us he now suspected that C. G. was up to something, for example killing him. He wanted Ilsa's advice, either he was going to go and get C. G. first, or to get technical evidence against him for the burning 4 churches... It ended up with the last... Nothing really happened until 2 days before his death, he called again, explaining his plans, mostly telling us / Ilsa to get hold of Swedish clairvoyant, to deliver evidence to the police. She (Ilsa) was unfortunately never able to get hold of this woman... Two days later I was called up by Ihsahn. He gave me the news that he'd seen on TV and I saw it later on! I never grieved or anything, but it was not any good feeling either... I'm not sure WHY Grishknackh did it, I am not even sure if he knows it himself. He says it was self-defence, which I doubt. Why would he come armed in the middle of the night anyway? Why would Euronymous attack somebody in his trousers, half naked? Running around looking stupid, that'd NOT be his style. Euronymous was a man with a lot of HONOUR (let ME now doubt your words, my precious friend! – ED). Grishknackh was a man of contradiction... filled with dishonour. Once he said himself to be an elf, I look upon him as a cowardly squealing orc! We have all seen his quetes and flyers, all these statements copied out of books he read, by people that were able to think. This is smart propaganda... the weak-minded might get fooled by his hidden lies, but I am not, and those Euronymous would chose as among his companies will not be... I strongly suggest that all "Pro's" and "Anti's" get some real facts before opening their mouths! What ever does any trendy UK or American kid know about people they never even met??? They just read all the bullshit and swallow it likbutter. I knew Euronymous for 4 years. In the end our contact grew as there was business going on that we both had a finger in. He seemed to me pretty okay... respecting those that deserved respect... disrespecting the losers... and they were many.
A very PROUD man in a nutshell!!!
These are my personal experiences anyway».

Kai Mathias Stalhammar:

Such are the words of Havard… oh man, sorry, I mean Mortiis. This murder took place a long time ago, now both, MAYHEM and BURZUM, have new albums out (even though Varg is still imprisoned)… many things changed, black metal somehow turned into a trend for many, many souls… and became even more sacred faith to defend for others. Few suicides among black metallers took place since 1993, although there were no such events, no events that could make us to discuss ‘em seven years later… Of course, I wasn’t there in 1993, moreover – I’m not even a Norwegian, however let me say few words in regards to Mortiis’ statements anyway.
I never considered Oystein an honorable man, more likely on the contrary. This is my opinion based on his actions, his way of life and his words. I never knew him personally (and somehow don’t regret it), but I feel I have a right to speak. Yes, I believe it was a murder, not a self-defense, since it truly sounds weird – I mean, the fact that someone comes to Oystein at night, being armed to the teeth… simply to discuss something. Yes, once again, Varg is a murderer, although I doubt if we should blame him in anything he ever did or said. No doubts that he often contradicted himself when it comes to his assertions, although should we always believe the media? Haven’t you witnessed your words being distorted by certain journalist freak in order to make either an article or interview more shocking? Scandal = popularity. Or I am wrong? I am not. I respected and will always respect Varg for being incredibly strong personality – and if one possesses such a personality I no longer care if he’s a bastard or not. I sincerely believe that Vikernes did it in vain… what did he gain by killing Euronymous? Nothing… well, maybe, with an exception for popularity… for giving black metal scene some kind of a boost… and, sadly, for turning it face to face with trend. But anyway, he did what he did, it’s now a part of history and there’s nothing we can change, don’t we? Too sad that such a talented, intelligent and educated individual spends his time in prison… but so what? It’s his choice, his life, his destiny.
Just let me say… Think twice before doing anything that might change your whole life… You see, I’m not your teacher or anything, these are just the words of mine… thoughts of mine… And I’m going to be guided by them, since they’re MINE.
