First of all, does your band's monicker has anything to do with such term as "resurrection"?
- Yeah, Resurrecturis is an ancient Latin funeral inscription which means "for those about to revive". It is a term that we really like because it is so closely linked to death, because it is a word that is normally written at the entrance of burial grounds, but at the same time it is a positive word because it is also connected with the idea of a life after death...
Your first CD has been released lately and as I believe that a lot of our readers still had no chance to check it out, please describe it in a few words.
- "Nocturnal" is our debut CD, we've put all the best of our material that we had when we recorded it... It has a powerful sound which was done by David Lenci (UZEDA, AYDRA, THREE SECOND KISS) and a wide variety of different feelings for a total of 10 songs... It is a product that we are really proud of... Also the reactions to it have been brilliant. The album got excellent rates in many magazines all over the world, some of these reviews can be read in our website (http://www.gammapop.com/resurrecturis), so you can have an idea of what big magazines have said on us.
You bio says that "the recording, mixing and mastering of "Nocturnal" took ages to complete" and I wonder why? Any shit happening within the walls of Sound Machine? By the way, why did you choose exactly this studio? Any special reasons for that?
- The recording and mixing of "Nocturnal" lasted about 40 days but it was mainly because we wanted it to be as good as it could, so we kept on working on it until we felt that we had achieved something that we were 100% proud of. Working with Davide was simply fantastic, he's really pro and also patient and friendly. I would advise any band to work with him, we have chosen him because he is one of the most experienced producers in Italy, he has worked with some really big names of the noise scene (he did live sound engineering for SHELLAC, JUNE OF 44 and so many more that it's impossible to recall), and we had already worked with him for our "Corpses" demo, so we knew him really well... We are full satisfied with what he has done on "Nocturnal" and we already know for sure that our next record we'll do it at Davide's brand new studio (Red House Recording).
Who did the drums programming on "Nocturnal"? Also, don¦t you think that real drums would be better, at least for a death metal band? Couldn't you find a suitable drummer or what?
- Yes, I totally
agree with you but finding a good element to fill the drummer's spot was
terribly difficult for us... On one hand we wouldn't settle for an average
musician and on the other hand the musical scene is really poor in our
area, that's why it took us so long to find the right man for the job...
Anyway I feel that the drums on "Nocturnal" are excellently well programmed
(it was me and Janos who did it!) and that for the band it was an excellent
training to play all that time with that metronome-like precision, I think
that it gave us a special tightness that many bands do not have. And anyway
I can announce that we finally have found an excellent drummer, his name
is Omar Moretti, he has been with us for some months now and I can tell
you that he fucking rocks! So be prepared...
Jerry's
vocals appears as one of the strongest parts of your band, at least in
my view! His singing seems to be extremely diverse and pleasant to listen
to, that's why I wonder if he ever trained his voice anywhere (certain
special school or something like that)?
- Jerry is
the most talented singer in our area, believe it or not, he never took
any special care of his vocals, he just screams his brain out or does some
mellow meowing, but he does it with the same ease that I eat my breakfast
in the morning. Besides that he is an excellent artist, he is graduating
in arts in October, he did the cover of the CD and also a part of the artwork
for the website (+ the picture album front). Anyway I would say that all
the band members give a great contribution to what the Resu-sound is all
about, the work of others like Gianluca (b) or Omar (d), may not be as
in the forefront, but I assure you that they are just as essential as Jerry
to the chemistry of RESURRECTURIS.
And what
about Gloria? Where did you pick her up?
- Gloria was
really easy for us to "find" as she's my sister, so, you know, I've always
knew her. She's a professional singer, she completed her classical studies
at the local conservatory but more recently changed her repertory towards
movie soundtracks and more popoular forms of music. She has a really beautyful
voice and she sounds really different from all those young blondes who
sing for metal groups lately (ala THE GATHERING). We wanted to distance
from that, and we offered to Gloria to work with us, so it turned out really
well, also because she likes our music and put a lot of effort in it.
"Nocturnal"
was unleashed through a Dutch label, Diamond Rds Int. & surprsingly
I have never heard about this one! Is it a newborn company? If so, don't
you fear to collaborate with them? Perhaps, singing a deal with certain
monster like Century Media instead would be more sage decision?
- The only
problem is that our label (Power Rds, formerly known as Diamond Rds International)
has a very bad distribution, so the record is really hard to find... Our
will is to change that, that's why we've signed some license deals to re-release
"Nocturnal" on cassette (Backwoods Productions - Hungary) and as a picture
disc (w/poster and sticker, Quamby Hill Rds - Germany). Besides that we're
currently negotiating some licence deals for the CD format, but that is
a bit more difficult, because Power Rds has the rights for the manufacturing
of CD's, so it depends on them... Right now some better / bigger labels
have shown an interest on us, so we are just hoping that everything goes
in the right direction and we can have better working conditions and distribution
/ promotion for our next album.
As far
as I know, you've shot a video on "Freeze Frame". Could you please tell
us more regarding it?
- Nope, the
project of the video was aborted, Power Rds failed to give us the money
that we needed for that, so it came out to be just a loss of time... But
there some video images that associated with some Resu-music do exist,
in fact a Dutch soap opera (!!!) included some seconds of "Il Male Contro
Il Male" in one of their episodes... I know it sounds weird, I was the
first one who could not believe it when I heard it!
"Midnight
Letter" happens to be really different from all the other tunes "Nocturnal"
is comprised of! What caused such a distinction? Isn't it some kind of
a cover song?
- "Midnight
Letter" is not a cover song, it was really hard for me to write the music
and the lyrics of it, because I had never worked on something that melodic.
But we don't want to paint ourselves in a corner when it comes to music,
we like to expand our influences and horizons all the time, as it is more
challenging and intriguing. That's why we did that song... A lot of magazines
have praised us for having the courage to put a song like "ML" on our album
as many people could not understand it, but I feel that it gives a special
sense of accomplishment and is the perfect ending to "Nocturnal".
Unfortunately,
you didn't send me the lyrics sheet with the tape. Too bad, because now
you'll have to acquaint us with their contents!
- Our lyrics deal with personal experiences and the things that we have in our minds, the most recorring theme seems to be death, but there are also equally interesting matters that we try to get into through our texts... We put a lot of effort into our lyrics and it is essential for us that we get them printed in all of our releases. This is not because we want to impose our message, but simply because we feel that the lyrics are just as important as the music and we want to give the chance to understand them to those concerned.
I also write lyrics, and (despite that it sounds truly weird) it's somehow easier for me to write few verses in English instead of my native language! Is it the same with you or not?
- It depends,
really. I mean some of our lyrics have been written in our native tongue
and we feel we have had excellent results with that, but we did that only
because on some occasion we feel that using Italian is more "appropriate"
and "personal" for some subjects. Other times is the exact opposite, and
we know that we have to use english verses to achieve the results that
we are aiming for... So it's not really a matter of how difficult is to
write in Italian and in English but more like which is the language that
will give us the best effect...
Was
it Jerry who painted the cover for "Nocturnal"? I must admit that it fits
your music perfectly, in the same time being very artistic! What does it
stand for?
- I totally
agree with you. Jerry did an excellent work for the CD cover and he did
even better for the artwork of the picture LP (which has a completely reworked
cover). The drawings of Jerry are not intended to have a special meaning,
they are not supposed to tell you a story, his graphics works tend more
to transmit to the viewer a feeling a sensation. The image on the front
cover is sensual and rotten and nostalgic at one time, I think it expresses
perfectly the variety of moods that can be heard on our album. We have
done some killer tour posters with that image.
I wonder
if you still consider RESURRECTURIS to be a death metal band?
- No, not
really, I think we are still a metal band, but this term should be taken
with the widest of its meanings.
What is
the main difference between your former demos and "Nocturnal"?
- With the
exception of our first demo, all the RESURRECTURIS' releases have been
done with the same line up (we have been together for more than three years
now) and I think that the basic ideas that we had when we first got the
band going are still there, somewhere. But we've made a lot of experiences,
improved as musicians, knew each other more and things like those inevitably
end to reflect in the way you play and compose. Also we have found Davide
who has helped us a lot in improving the quality of our sound and finding
our own identity (it was a very wise move to work with a producer that
does not work so often with metal bands - he gave us a
quite original
sound).
And what
about your second tape? It had to be released in the shape of MCD by Wild
Rags, right? Did it already take place?
- The re-release
of "Evil Confronting Evil" happened some months after the demo release,
I don't have exact figures on how it did sell, but Wild Rags seemed to
be happy with the results and has always kept an eye on us since then.
The only thing that I know is that 1000/1100 copies of the disc were printed.
About Wild Rags I want to tell you one thing: despite all the very bad
rumors circulating on them, they have always treated us fairly every
time we dealt
with them. I mean they did not make us millionaires, but they fulfilled
all the obligations foreseen by the contract that we had stipulated with
them... Frankly I can only speak for myself but I can't really imagine
from where all those rumors originate from.
What do
you know (and think) about Russia? Have you ever heard any metal acts coming
from our lands?
- I've never
been to Russia, but I'm fascinated by the country's history, expecially
the times of Peter the Great and the early years of the commie revolution,
until all the cold war (I did my graduation on the Berlin Blockade!). I
would really like to make a trip there, even though I've heard that there
are a lot of problems with crime and mafia in bigger towns. I've heard
some Russian metal bands, in compilation CD's and tapes, but none that
I can recall for having impressed me that much. I have read something about
KORROSIA METALLA (or something like that) in the mighty book "Lords Of
Chaos (the bloody rise of the satanic black metal underground)", but I
have to admit to never listening to their music. Russian women are tall,
blonde and beautiful and are said to be excellent lovers - I would like
to check this info on my own, we'll see!!!
In the
end let me cite your bio once again: "the band has survived an eight years
ordeal made of painful lineup hassles, members fucking their minds on drugs!"
I assume you had really hard time with RESURRECTURIS in the past? How did
you manage to overcome all the problems you have endured? It is very likely
that your words might help others to go through the problems surrounding
them!
- The only thing that got the band together for all that time and despite all the problems and shit that we've gone through has been the love and trust for the music that we do and also the friendship that unites us. This band is really like a family, we have a lot of fights and discussions, there is always a lot of tension between us, but at the end of the day we are really close to each other and would miss this way too much had all this to come to an end. I think it is unbelievable what we have been able to achieve with the few money that we have and considering where we come from (a place where metal music is something completely "out"). We had to confront with so many different problems and had to solve them on our own... We had to learn to use computer graphics, to speak English, to build a web page and hundred more things and we did all this with time and sweat... But we are really really proud of what we have been able to realize over the years. So my only suggestion for younger bands is to do something that they believe in and put all their efforts in it... Something will come out of it (sooner or later!).
