ABOMINATOR
“Damnation’s
Prophecy”
Necropolis
Records
(provided
by Focusion Promotion)
rating: 2
of 6
Some of you
may recall this band referring to their split CD with Sweden’s MORNALAND
on Path To Enlightenment Recs – and now we have their debut full length
CD unleashed through US Necropolis Records. “Damnation’s Prophecy” features
ten songs and sixty minutes of pure Australian war metal in the vein of
BESTIAL WARLUST or ABYSSIC HATE (such song-titles as “Filthy Spirit Antichrist”,
“Debauchery The Sinners Hammer” or “Activate The Anarchus” only underline
the afore-cited words of mine) – brutal, fast-paced and hateful. An ode
to Evil, a hymn for Satan. Well played, well executed, but… incredibly
boring! One song gives place to another, but everything stays the same
as it was – speed, melody, riff(s)… This CD has a good layout (even taking
into account the fact that I have only PROMO disc), and is not that bad,
consequently those of you who’re totally into grinding monotonous black
metal may try this one… (Herr Stalhammar)
ABSURDUS
“No Heaven
In Sight”
Candlelight
Records
rating: 3
of 6
Here we have
eleven tracks of melodic and disgustingly commercial black / thrash metal
with a brilliant production (Tico Tico Studios). I couldn’t discover any
sincerity when it comes to “No Heaven In Sight”, so, if the guitar work
wasn’t so impressive, I would give this CD ‘0’ instead of ‘3’. (Herr Stalhammar)
ANARAZEL
“Rise Of
The Tempest”
self-released
rating: 4,
5 of 6
Here comes
one more Australian black metal band, although this time incredibly much
better than f.ex. ABOMINATOR reviewed above. These guys don’t care about
originality too much, although their composition talent is really impressive!
I also like this effort because of it’s sincerity and, what’s truly splendid,
VARIETY. Musically, it’s pure evil black metal without any alien influences…
in the vein of DARKTHRONE’s “Under A Funeral Moon” and “Transilvanian Hunger”,
although thousand times better executed, as well as more thoughtout, however
that Evil Spirit is still here… “Rise Of The Tempest” definitely is a decent
CD created by three talented individuals, hence I urge you to check it
out immediately. Since it’s a self-released effort which strikes more like
a demo CD, here ANARAZEL’s email so you could contact ‘em in order to purchase
this unholy piece of undivine art: anarazel@iname.com
… AND OCEANS
vs. BLOODTHORN
“War, Vol.
1 (Finland vs. Norway)”
Season Of
Mist Productions
rating: …
AND OCEANS – 2 of 6
BLOODTHORN – 5 of 6
This is a
split CD from two well-known bands who compose rather similar music, at
least it’s done within the bounds of sympho-black metal. Each act appears
with four tracks, and I feel that the ones by BLOODTHORN are much more
impressive ones – and also, much more original and diverse. Unfortunately,
… AND OCEANS can’t offer anything original or exciting – and I don’t want
to bother myself with listening to regular commercial BM band. Generally
speaking, this CD is worth your attention because of the four outstanding
tunes from BLOODTHORN; while listening to … AND OCEANS doesn’t seem to
be a necessity. (Herr Stalhammar)
ASGAROTH
“Trapped
In The Depths Of Eve”
Requiem Records
rating: 5
of 6
Finally we
have a debut full-length CD from ASGAROTH, one of the best (if not the
best) Spain’s black metal act. “Trapped In The Depths Of Eve” is a big
step forward in comparison to their former MCD, “The Quest For Eldenhor”.
All tunes are more thoughtout and various, producer- and musicianship appear
as more impressive as well. Yes, it’s sympho-black, but fortunately based
on powerful guitars, despite that synth looks like the leading instrument
anyway. Regarding innovations, there’re not that much of them here… maybe
only “clean” vocals which I consider to be highly pleasant ones… Check
out “The Choirs Of Elemental Deities” and “Placious Echoes At The Darkwoods
You Greet… Silvering Moon Between My Shadows”… I really doubt that you’ll
forget about this fascinating music soon after listening to it! (Herr Stalhammar)
AURORA
“Sadiam”
Serious Entertainment
rating: 6
of 6
Too bad that
I haven’t heard AURORA’s former CD, “Eos”! Why? Well, simply because “Sadiam”
is absolutely killer effort!!! Despite that AURORA comes from Denmark,
they sound like a Swedish band, being inspired by such acts as DARK TRANQUILLITY
and alike ones. And I should admit that most of that “Gothenburg-area sound”
originators sound so lame in comparison to AURORA!!! All of the songs off
this MCD appear as pure perfection, perfection in melody… At least, I haven’t
heard an album featuring such genius harmonies and such variety for years…
A MUST. (Herr Stalhammar)
AURORA
“Eos”
Serious Entertainment
rating: 5
of 6
Oops! When
writing ‘too bad that I haven’t heard “Eos”’, I didn’t expect that these
guys will be kind enough to send me this CD. As always with Serious Entertainment’s
releases, “Eos” is very well packaged – it even seems that this album’s
design hides some kind of special concept… or am I wrong? Musically, it’s
rather different from “Sadiam”. Actually, it’s VERY different from that
MCD. It is extremely complicated, sometimes almost turning into ‘progressive’
thing, with wide variety of singing lines and plenty of experimental moves
as well as some elements borrowed from psychedelic and gothic / dark wave
acts… It’s useless to mark out any tunes here – “Eos” is the sort of album
which appears as a conceptual canvas (musically, of course). Once again:
this is very impressive piece, although in my view “Sadiam” is better.
(Herr Stalhammar)
BETHLEHEM
“Reflektionen
Auf’s Sterben”
Red Stream
Records
rating: 5
of 6
Here’s a
brand new MCD from mighty BETHLEHEM, featuring only new (?) material, with
an exception for the remixed version of “Vargtimmen” taken from the “Dark
Metal” CD (Adipocere Records, 1994). Actually, I don’t know what to say
here… I guess that all those who already listened to this band’s former
efforts will find this one as rather pleasing… as well as the most weird
in comparison to everything these Germans have done so far. The only thing
I can’t get into goes for the song titles like “Yesterday I Still Had A
Beer Today” and “You Must Play With Yourself”… Is this a king of joke or
what??? (Herr Stalhammar)
BETHZAIDA
“LXXVIII”
Season Of
Mist Productions
rating: 5
of 6
First of
all, big “fuck off” to Season Of Mist for being the rip-off label ignoring
anything pertinent to the underground (hmm… I wonder if they care about
ANYONE at all??). Secondly, eternal hails to BETHZAIDA for releasing another
splendid piece of art. No doubts that “LXXVIII” is much better than already
good “Nine Worlds” CD (out in 1996), however isn’t it a natural thing when
band’s new effort appears as a more exciting one in comparison to their
debut? BETHZAIDA’s stuff became MUCH MORE complicated and sometimes it’s
even difficult to get into it, although it never becomes avantgarde. What
really surprised me here goes for the guitars which are tuned in an incredibly
low way. Like it is some grindcore band, you know. Vocals became more hysteric
although sometimes they turn to more calm kind of singing, calm and mysterious,
something in the vein of FESTER (I mean Norway’s FESTER, of course. Remember
the one?). The flute is still here, while keyboards are absent on this
CD and I believe it’s a great thing! Nowadays, it’s really difficult to
fancy worthy black / death metal whose stuff lacks synths – however, here
it is! Somehow it strikes that the producership is worse if comparing to
“Nine Worlds”, although it doesn’t suck (lucky us!). Besides all the afore-said,
I can’t leave unmentioned the fact that BETHZAIDA finally started to sing
in their own language! Most of the songs are still sung in English anyway,
but… In general, this is the sort of CD you definitely have to purchase…
NOW! (Herr Stalhammar)
BEWITCHED
“Dragonflight”
Conquistador
Records
rating: 5,
5 of 6
Here comes
BEWITCHED, but this time from Chile. Just liked their Swedish namesakes,
they already had one CD behind them (“Hibernum In Perpetuum”, Picoroco
Records, 1996) before unleashing “Dragonflight”, as well as split-MLP with
Finnish F-UNCUNT, however I guess that “Dragonflight” will be the first
effort from them to be the one to spread their name worldwide. This 14-track
creation appears as really outstanding piece, especially taking into account
the fact that this band comes from such an exotic (at least, to me) country.
Formed in 1990 (!), they managed to elaborate their own style and distinctive
sound throughout years, while this CD is the perfect example to the afore-cited
words of mine. I thought it would be something in the vein of traditional
South American black / death metal (like MYSTIFIER or TENEBRARUM, you know…),
but just like Paraguay’s SABAOTH, these guys truly surprised me, because
I couldn’t find any comparisons that would fit here. They sound more in
a European way (this statement also goes for their lyrics and song-titles,
such as “Wotan’s Curse” and “The Threat Of Winter Community”), being rather
melodic, featuring unusually complicated structures, echo vocals and varied
singing styles; from black metal shrieks through impressive high-pitched
“clean” vocals to King Diamond-alike falsetto. Undoubtedly stupendous guitar
leads and perfectly grim, mystic atmosphere are here as well… “Dragonflight”
also includes MERCYFUL FATE’s “Black Funeral” – ‘chilling’ as it said in
the promo sheet… and I totally agree with this definition. No doubts, Doomicus
is a very talented singer; at least, his vocals on “Black Funeral” sound
nearly amazing… Actually, I don’t know what to say further… Maybe with
an exception for one comparison which finally came to my mind: NIGHT CONQUERS
DAY is the name of the band whose CD you should listen to in order to fairly
conceive what BEWITCHED is alike, although I feel I have to assure you
in their 100% originality once again! A MUST! (Herr Stalhammar)
BLACK MESSIAH
“Sceptre
Of Black Knowledge”
Last Episode
Productions
rating: 5,
5 of 6
Hmm, this
is highly interesting! “Sceptre Of Black Knowledge” is a bit unfinished
but still very interesting work being an attempt to combine raw atmospheric
black metal and Middle Ages folklore. Sometimes it sounds almost lively,
reminding of merry Russian folk songs with those accordion, violin and
acoustics… (I immediately conceived the picture of drunken heathens jumping
around the bonfire and crying out something thinking that they’re singing
that way, heh heh…) It sounds strange, but that’s exactly why I like it.
If only a production was better… this CD sounds like it was recorded at
the semi-professional studio. Anyway, highly recommended. BLACK MESSIAH
offers undoubtedly original and very diverse stuff… maybe the best one
I’ve ever heard from Germany… (Herr Stalhammar)
BORKNAGAR
“The Archaic
Course”
Century Media
rating: 5,
5 of 6
Does BORKNAGAR
has a right to exist without Garm? My answer is “yes”. Oystein (the mastermind
behind the band) found new singer, who is even more talented than Garm,
as well as new guitarist and bassist. So it looks like Oystein himself
and Grim (drums) are the only ones left of the original lineup… “The Archaic
Course” doesn’t have anything to do anymore with that raw Norse black metal
featured on this band’s debut CD, it’s more progressive and diverse, with
magnificent guitar passages and outstanding vocals (I think I should mention
that Vortex sings in a ‘nocturnal voice’ very rarely; this album has more
emphasis on “clean” vocals), still having certain connection with the extreme
metal scene, so those who blaim this band in becoming commercial after
signing with Century Media should shut the fuck up… Highly recommended.
(Herr Stalhammar)
CENTINEX
“Reborn Through
Flames”
Repulse Records
rating: 5
of 6
Almost each
release from CENTINEX comes from different label, this time from Spain’s
Repulse Records, also being already the fourth CD from them. Fortunately,
CENTINEX still stay true to their roots and their style is still the same
perfect mixture of Swedish death metal (ENTOMBED-alike) and (guess what?)
Swedish black metal (GATES OF ISHTAR-alike). If comparing to their previous
releases, this one is less brutal, with more emphasis on melody, although
it doesn’t mean that “Reborn Through Flames” carries any mark of a trend.
They didn’t become commercial and (I hope) never will. Coming with (yet
another) brilliant cover by Joe Petagno, this CD features stunning cross
between black and death metal, melodic and brutal in the same time, with
‘tasty’ (heh heh) guitar passages (Sunlight Studios!) and impressive leads,
memorable vocal lines and a drum-machine programmed in a rather interesting
way (it’s tracks sound different from the ones on “Reflections”, the former
CD from CENTINEX)… Besides everything mentioned above, we can’t ignore
the fact that “Reborn Through Flames” is the band’s most diverse album
so far. Great stuff! By the way, check out “Under The Guillotine” cover
(originally by KREATOR)! (Herr Stalhammar)
CHILDREN OF
BODOM
“Hatebreeder”
Spinefarm
Records
rating: A
MASTERPIECE
Hmm… Just
like in case with NIGHTWISH’s “Oceanborn”, I don’t have enough words to
say anything concerning this CD. Once I praised their former “Something
Wild” CD to the skies, however this one is even better! “Hatebreeder” is
a pure ‘follow-up’ to “Something Wild”, i.e. it’s the same heavy metal
with raw black metallish vokills and perfect arrangements… Those guitar
/ keyboard duels simply won’t leave anyone indifferent. You know, this
band sounds like Yngwie Malmsteen in black metal… Basically, everything’s
the same with “Something Wild”, although this time even more thoughtout
and exciting. No words left – it’s a must! (Herr Stalhammar)
CORVUS CORAX
“Viator”
Falcone Musikverlag
rating: 4
of 6
This is interesting
album, or at least rather fresh and innovative. It begins as a ‘usual’
neo-folklore stuff, however later there can be discovered some differences
from bands like ESTAMPIE or FREIBURGER SPIELLEYT. First of all, I was really
amazed after being informed that “Viator” was performed by only five people
which play nearly 40 (!!!) various instruments, most of them are folk ones,
of course. Secondly, it’s the first CD combining ‘modern’ (hmm…) folklore
with synthetic rhythms! Have you ever heard anything like this? I didn’t
it, for sure. I believe, those who’re into folk music, as well as the ones
itching for something original, definitely should check out this album…
(Herr Stalhammar)
CRYPTIC CARNAGE
“Rozelowe”
Last Episode
Productions
rating: 4,
5 of 6
This is a
bewitching mixture of black and doom metal, dark wave with plenty of pseudo-folk
elements… “Rozelowe” is a second CD from CRYPTIC CARNAGE and it’s undoubtedly
a huge step ahead. Just listen to such tunes as “However Rich A Man May
Be…” and “The Wizard” as well as amazing ballad-alike “Liebe, Hass, Neid
Und Verderben” and you will agree with my words at 100%. By the way, there’re
some CREMATORY members who participated in the “Rozelowe’s” recording,
a fact which is definitely worth attention… (Herr Stalhammar)
DAGORLAD
“Incantations”
II Moons
rating: 6
of 6
II Moons
were always known as a label releasing highly impressive and original music
(just check out SEAR BLISS, DEVISER or SKYFORGER) and here we have one
more brilliant release from them. I can’t say for sure, but it strongly
seems like “Incantations” is the most original CD I’ve heard this month.
This Belgium band’s style appears as something really strange – sort of
an extremely atmosphericm, very dark and evocative death metal with few
BM elements; slow and anxious, with deep guttural vocals and lots of horror
movie samples, thick guitar sound and magic synths tightly shrouding them...
Something tells me that this album’s lyrical part was based on horror movies,
or how else would you explain such song titles as “White Zombie”, “Count
Zaroff”, “Invasion Of Rats”, “Army Of Darkness” and alike ones, eh? DAGORLAD
consists of two man only (Patrick De Vidts on vocals and Philippe Gandibleu
on guitars, bass, synths and programming) with addition of two guest musicians:
Zarch Abrahamjan who is responsible for lead guitars on “White Zombie”,
and Lord Halleux who appears as a back vocalist on “Invasion Of Rats”.
This is absolutely killer stuff! (Herr Stalhammar)
DARKSTYLE
“Black Crystals”
Some Place
Else
rating: 5
of 6
The MCD from
this Finnish band (Weno responsible from guitars, bass and whispers (yeah,
there’re no ‘usual’ vocals here!) and Anna on keyboards and programming)
immediately made me to recall mighty SHADOWSEEDS and their “Dream Of Lilith”
CD. It’s the same dreamy, a bit monotonous dark metal with enigmatic whisperings
and unique atmosphere, impossible to be described in human language… There’re
five tracks here, almost similar to each other, although “Black Crystals”
never becomes boring… If talking about comparisons, we could mention Sweden’s
MEMORIUM (R.I.P.?)… Those guys also played the similar kind of music, however
all of the mentioned bands including the one whose MCD I’m reviewing right
now, are completely different, in the same time being quite close to each
other musically and genre-wise… Hmm, that sounds as something totally incomprehensible,
so let’s better finish this review here. (Herr Stalhammar)
DARKWOODS
MY BETROTHED
“Witch-Hunts”
Spinefarm
Records
rating: 3,
5 of 6
Oh, no! Once
they were one of my favorite Finnish bands ever, but now… with this CD
they stopped being the one, I believe. Where are those out-of-key, but
inimitable Pasi’s vocals? Where are those unique lyrics and speeches by
Teemu? They’re gone simply because both of them left the band (or were
fired?), and now we have The Emperor as a singer and Hallgrim responsible
for guitars and bass. I wouldn’t say that it was a good choice, guys… DARKWOODS
MY BETROTHED lost all of it’s originality, while this CD appears as a perfect
proof to these words. Already the first track here plunged me into the
deepest spiritual shock one could conceive… “Without Ceremony And Bell
Toll” sounds exactly like a tune by DIMMU BORGIR, but hundred times more
commercial! How do you like it?? The music becomes more exciting later,
although sometimes it’s almost being runed by The Emperor’s worthless gurgling.
Of course, no “clean” vocals here. In the end, the CD gets more and more
impressive thanks to those really splendid solos, although “Witch-Hunts”
can’t be even compared to the previous efforts from this (once outstanding)
band… (Herr Stalhammar)
DECEMBER WOLVES
“Completely
Dehumanized”
Wicked World
Records
rating: 1
of 6
Total loss
of originality. This CD sounds like another one from MARDUK, however undoubtedly
less exciting… Fast, thoughtless (although well played and executed) black
metal lacking any variety and attractiveness, at least in comparison to
their brilliant debut, “’Til Ten Years”… I truly liked that one, but “Completely
Dehumanized” is worthless piece appearing of no interest to me. Anyway,
what did you expect after their disgusting “We Are Everywhere” promo MCD???
(Herr Stalhammar)
DEUTERONOMIUM
“… To Die
And Gain”
Little Rose
Productions
rating: 5
of 6
So, DEUTERONOMIUM
is a christian band??? Yuck! I just can’t understand how can one sing such
lines as ‘Jesus is the Lord of my life’ with a tortured, pure black metal
voice, with melodic though somehow hateful (?) and aggressive BM as an
accompaniment… Anyway, this is the kind of case when I don’t care about
the band’s ideology since their stuff is really great. DEUTERONOMIUM’s
debut CD, “Street Corner Queen”, was one of the most original and MOST
various efforts I’ve ever heard in black metal (hmm… christian BM? Sounds
weird…), however it is said that they will compose less diverse stuff in
future, still staying an innovative band, though. This MCD features “To
Die And Gain” track taken from their upcoming full-length CD, it’s demo
version (which is shorter and features some shouting vocals instead of
black metal ones) + “Misleader” as a bonus track. Musically, it’s well
thoughtout, well structured and well executed (too much phrases beginning
with the ‘well’ word, don’t you think so?) black / death metal (they prefer
to call it ‘death’n’roll’), melodic and groovy, brutal and atmospheric,
with good musicianship and definite originality. The lyrics are well written
and sound rather poetic… if only they weren’t christian-inspired… I really
can’t wait to get their new CD – I hope it will be as unique and outstanding
as “Street Corner Queen”… Interviewing this band seems to be an interesting
experience, so expect the first interview I’ve ever made with a band who
appear as my ideological opponents. (Herr Stalhammar)
DEUTERONOMIUM
“Here To
Stay”
Little Rose
Productions
rating: 5
of 6
Manu Lehtinen,
the mastermind behind Little Rose Productions, was kind enough to add me
to his label’s promo list, so here we have so impatiently awaited (at least
when it comes to me) CD, a second full-length creation from Finland’s DEUTERONOMIUM.
Well, yes, as they said previously, DEUTERONOMIUM became less various musically,
although in the same time contriving to sound the way no one else does.
Just like the material presented on “… To Die And Gain”, this CD brings
some melodic, brutal and groovy black / death metal, mostly fast-paced.
It’s still truly diverse, although, of course, it can’t be compared to
the diversity featured on “Street Corner Queen”, their debut CD. I still
can’t decide whether this fact turned out as a disappointment for me… The
layout is great and the lyrics are still written in a splendid way, although
their contents extremely irritate me sometimes. Especially, when they become
somewhat aggresive (“Millstone” is a good example of such poetry). In fact,
I’d like to wish these guys to concentrate on MUSIC (which is brilliant)
instead of spreading their christian disease… I don’t like preachers too
much, you know. But anyway, if you’re not a satanist and open minded enough,
check it out NOW! This stuff truly kicks ass. (Herr Stalhammar)
DIMMU BORGIR
“Godless
Savage Garden”
Nuclear Blast
Records
It’s really
hard to say what was the reason for releasing this CD… In my opinion, it
may be divided in few parts and rate them separately:
1) Brand
new songs (3 of 6)
Well, what
to say here… There’s nothing new, only synths sound somehow in a different
way. And I can’t say that DIMMU BORGIR gained by keyboardist’s replacement.
Despite the disgusting appearance, their ex-key(gay)boardman was undoubtedly
talented musician, moreover, his passages appeared as the only good side
of this, basically rather mediocre, act. And after Shagrath and co. kicked
him out, DIMMU BORGIR became what it really is: boring typical BM - nothing
more, nothing less.
2) Old tunes
(???)
I still can’t
understand why the hell did they include this stuff here…
3) ACCEPT’s
“Metal Heart” cover (6 of 6)
Arrgh, and
finally here’s something splendid!!! No doubts that this is extremely good
cover… And surprisingly well executed… When Shagrath spawned a couple of
ala-Dirkschnaider screams, I almost began to respect him…
4) Live tracks
(2 of 6)
These songs
only proved that DIMMU BORGIR aren’t worth a shit live once again. Guitarists
play out-of-key, and bass guitar can’t be heard at all… Only drums and
keys sound fine…
So… Actually,
it’s up to you whether to buy this CD or not… (Lazar)
DIMMU BORGIR
“Spiritual
Black Dimensions”
Nuclear Blast
Records
rating: 6
of 6
Seems like
Lazar didn’t like “Godless Savage Garden” too much, eh? The same with me,
by the way. Only “Metal Heart” was worth something… In fact, I didn’t expect
anything good from “Spiritual Black Dimensions”, but surprisingly it turned
out as an absolutely killer album! You know, I never respect DIMMU BORGIR
too much as personalities, but their music always was rather pleasant,
and this one is simply a masterpiece! Of course, everything is based on
synths, however powerful guitars often appear as leading instruments here,
and that’s something I truly appreciate. I guess, it’s needless to say
anything regarding keyboards – the new guy is even more skillful than Stian
Aarstad! The harmonies he creates are more than bewitching, they’re unforgettable…
Also, this CD features great (please, don’t argue me!!!) “clean” voices
here and there – I just can’t believe that Shagrath learned so sing so
skillfully! Besides aforementioned ‘goodies’, “Spiritual Black Dimension”
has one more surprise – masterly performed guitar leads, the sort of thing
I never expected to hear from DIMMU BORGIR… All in all, this is how the
perfect sympho-black metal should sound alike! You’d better forget about
MYSTIC CIRCLE, ODIUM and LIMBONIC ART’s creations since they can’t be even
compared to this magnificent, tremendous, staggering CD… (Herr Stalhammar)
DOLORIAN
“When All
The Laughter Has Gone”
Wounded Love
Records
rating: 5
of 6
All the laughter
definitely has a chance to cease at all after listening to this CD, one
of the most weird and gloomy outfits I’ve heard last months… Formed only
about a year (!!!) ago, this Finnish band already looks like one of the
most strong forces in the Suomi’s underground. Even UNHOLY, a pure legend,
sounds so dull in comparison to DOLORIAN! The best word to describe this
act’s breed is “grief”. All of the seven songs featured on this CD are
totally soaked with the feelings misery and sorrow. Mournful, weird and
spiritually bankrupting, ravaging and disturbing, grim, lacking anything
of sound mind… Musically, “When All The Laughter Has Gone” carries the
same mood and atmosphere as their countrymates, such as THERGOTHON or UNHOLY;
being extremely slow, DOLORIAN’s stuff would make you to recall the aforementioned
bands once again, however is there anyone who will dare to doubt their
originality??? Singing-wise, DOLORIAN are much more black metal, and that’s
also a fact worth mentioning… If there’s anyone of you craving for utter
gloom, itching for the essential apocalypse… check it out. (Herr Stalhammar)
DRACONIS
“Overlords
Of The Greying Dawn”
Dark Realm
Records
rating: 3,
5 of 6
Fast-paced
hellish black metal from USA, heavily reminding me of the best efforts
by MARDUK. Despite that it’s extreme to the core, I bet that no one would
consider it thoughtless and boring. These guys have enough brains to make
their music rather various and intriguing… (Herr Stalhammar)
ERASMUS
“Forged For
Proof Eterne”
Infidel Audio
Torture
rating: 2
of 6
This is totally
underground stuff, intented strictly for die-hard UG fans. “Forged For
Proof Eterne” lasts for 35 minutes having seven tracks of extremely raw,
sometimes almost incomprehensible, black metal buzz in the vein of KRIEG…
You, guys, should firstly learn how to handle your instruments properly,
secondly, find a proper studio – and only then you’ll have some certain
future… By the way, I don’t really phrases like “by selling this CD at
5$, ERASMUS make a financial loss… but evil is not about money”… You see,
to avoid trends is the greatest trend ever… “Erasmus”? “Marasmus” seems
to be more appropriate bandname / definition… (Herr Stalhammar)
ESOTERIC
"The Pernicious
Enigma"
Aesthetic
Death Records
rating: 6
of 6
Honestly
speaking, I truly regret that I missed "Epistemological Despondency", a
former CD from ESOTERIC, and the reason is utmost simple. "The Pernicious
Enigma", 115-minute effort, released three years after "Epistemological
Despondency" was unleashed, appears as a something outstanding, moreover
- unique. Featuring nine incredibly long songs, this double-CD is a journey
into the universe of absurd, a trip through the landscapes of outer-space
dimensions… Actually, it's not the kind of music (although, I doubt if
we can define it as 'music' - I mean, 'music' as a conventional term) one
should listen reading something or talking with certain person in the same
time. Deep dark night, a shadowy room lit by candles' fire… and utter loneliness
is what ESOTERIC needs to bewitch you. Some cannabis also seems to be an
important attribute, I believe. Otherwise, you won't ever understand the
genius of this band, considering them to be undoubtedly sick persons instead.
It's very difficult to describe the music itself… It's something 'inmaterial'
and unearthly. Sombre as hell and atmospheric. Anxious and disturbing.
Grim and sorrowful. Mostly extremely slow, so slow that one may be mesmerized
with it, although sounding almost like a grindcore at times (I mean the
shortest theme here, "At War With The Race". The shortest one… and most
uninteresting). I bet, most of the 'songs' represented on "The Pernicious
Enigma" are based on improvisation… improvisation and tremendous ability
to transform dreams into music, chaos into deceptively regulated illusion
of tranquillity, suddenly turning into the paroxysm of disorderly hatred.
Hatred with no definite target, no clear object or conjectured goal. Being
plunged into the Space of Subconsciousness, you're absorbed by plenty of
samples and sfx's seeming to be almost supernatural to you. The voice no
mortal's throat may beget takes you further into the realms of submerging
time, eternity devouring itself… into the very depths of Universal Tartarus,
beyond it's dismal gates - into the dominions of tortured screams, kingdom
of inhuman thoughts, emotions and dreams. "Creation Through Destruction"
gives birth to "Illusion Of Iniquitous Turpitude And Resonance Of Lascivious
Malevolence"… gone is the "Dominion Of Slaves" spawned by "Allegiance"
of "Stygian Narcosis" and "Sinistrous" visions once begotten by "A Worthless
Dream"… a dream of "Passing Through Matter"… a dream of being "At War With
The Race"… Oh, enough with this! It looks like you're begging for the resume?
Well, I've heard lots of outstanding CDs during past few years, but "The
Pernicious Enigma" is the most inimitable and most original of them. Perhaps,
it sounds too high-flown, however I couldn't find any other words that
would fit better… (Herr Stalhammar)
ETHODIUS
“Ethodius”
self-released
rating: 4,
5 of 6
“Ethodius,
a name from 300 A.D., was chosen alone to name this album because it helps
to represent a time in which certain events occurred dealing with religion
and culture that have shaped our society as it is today. The listened is
then able to be brought back to this time of pretentious feelings and changing
religions accompanied by dark and experimental ambience”. What could you
expect from this CD after reading through such an introduction? Right,
nothing but ambient. And here it is, almost some kind of a soundtrack to
the “Excalibur”-alike movie, including ten tracks of sometimes ethereal
and mesmerizing, sometimes ghastly and anxious music, with plenty of sampled
dialogues… As they say, ‘quite a few of the sounds that have been recorded
have been processed by effects such as a resonant filter and Nonlinear
reverb. Others are looped backwards or have been altered in real-time by
use of a MIDI device editor while recording to a Tascam 238a analog 8 track”,
therefore it’s not your regular MORTIIS-alike crappy album, featuring some
extremely primitive pseudo-ambient stuff. ETHODIUS contrived to create
something definitely more professional and attractive. I wouldn’t say that
this CD is an outstanding piece, however it’s still more than decent.
P. S. By
the way, since I still can’t figure out if this is only a demo CD or simply
self-released ‘official’ album (the design and packaging strike as quite
poor), I’d better give you ETHODIUS’ email so you could contact them in
order to purchase this CD: ethodius@gatecom.com

EWIGKEIT
“Battle Furies”
Eldethorn
Records
rating: 4
of 6
EWIGKEIT
is a neophyte band from England, which unfortunately is not as original
as their countrymates, such as BAL SAGOTH, although this CD is not bad
either. “Battle Furies” brings some extremely atmospheric black / death
metal in the vein of DECEMBER MOON and VARATHRON (especially when it comes
to vocals, which also remind me a bit of CREMATORY circa “Just Dreaming”),
as always featuring lots of synths and some female voices. This is decent
stuff but nothing really special. (Herr Stalhammar)
FIRSTBORN
EVIL
“Rebirth
Of Evil”
Guardian
Of Metal
rating: 5,
5 of 6
In fact,
it’s always very difficult to rate suchlike CDs. We have plenty of ‘vanguard
black metal’ items this issue, and “Rebirth Of Evil” from Portugal’s FIRSTBORN
EVIL may be easily reckoned to this newborn (?) genre. Sometimes it sounds
a bit like CRADLE OF FILTH with high-pitched shrieks, hellish speed and
pounding drums (played by Wolfchild who is a ‘vital creature’, not some
drum-machine like the one on all CRADLE’s efforts (except for “The Principle
Of Evil…” CD)), sometimes it’s more ‘calm’, melodic black metal in the
vein of DIABOLICAL MASQUERADE, rarely turning into almost heavy metal-alike
stuff with husky voices and pleasant harmonies… It’s also becomes nearly
incomprehensible at times due to lots of avantgarde moves. Glaurung Dragonvomit’s
vocals is what adds certain originality to this effort, at least I haven’t
heard such variety singing-wise for a long time… (Herr Stalhammar)
FUNERAL MIST
“Devilry”
Shadow Records
rating: 4,
5 of 6
“Devilry”
strikes as the first-ever output from this Swedish band, although it is
very good for only a debut! This MCD opens with “The Devil’s Emissary”,
most impressive track here, which also combines the best sides of FUNERAL
MIST. Musically, this duo, - Arioch (all stringed and vocal terror) and
Necromorbus (drums), - makes their stuff being heavily inspired by early
MARDUK, at least that’s my opinion. “Devilry” represents pure hellish black
metal with inimitable diabolical atmosphere, certain melody and absolutely
outstanding drumming… Packaged in a totally evil way, this MCD will be
a splendid gift for any true black metal fan. (Herr Stalhammar)
GANDALF
“Deadly Fairytales”
Wicked World
Records
rating: 4
of 6
This is not
original at all, although quite pleasing for the ear(s). I don’t know where
does this band come from – judging by the stuff featured on this CD, I
could say that they’re from Sweden, but after listening to DARK TRANQUILLITY-clones
from Germany (NIGHT IN GALES), Mexico (CENOTAPH) and USA (SHADOWS FALL),
I can’t say anything for sure anymore. “Deadly Fairytales” consists of
ten tracks of pure melodic black / death metal with perfect harmonies and
highly impressive guitar work, packed with a bit hysteric vocals (more
in the vein of SCHEITAN and UNANIMATED than DARK TRANQUILLITY), sounding
rather attractive and memorable, although these guys have to compose more
personal music in future to reach anything… While now, GANDALF’s creations
are intented mostly for the lovers of Sweden-inspired stuff. (Herr Stalhammar)
HEIDENREICH
“Trance Of
An Unholy Union”
Napalm Records
rating: 5
of 6
Ooh… This
is something really innovative. Avantgarde CD based on contrasts, an impressive
mixture of Harmony and Chaos, Beauty and Ugliness, Anger and Romanticism.
There’re a lot of weird sounds here, wide range of vocals and unlimited
imagination when it comes to composition. The years of 1998 – 1999 brought
(and still bring) us plenty of efforts which may be defined as nothing
but ‘progressive black metal’ or even ‘avantgarde’ one. This CD has some
skullcrushing tracks, however later we have tracks like “Heart Of Midnight”,
based on heart-rending guitar leads… “Trance Of An Unholy Union” represents
‘variety to the extreme’ and I think it’s a good thing, at least this genre
(e.g. black metal) needs a breath of fresh air in any form – and here it
is, with the CDs from HEIDENREICH, ODHINN, FIRSTBORN EVIL and SCHOLOMANCE…
Also, I guess I have to say that this band is comprised of Thurisaz and
Peter K. – both are quite well-known persons in the Austria’s underground.
The first one comes from AMESTIGON, while Peter plays in ABIGOR… “Trance
Of An Unholy Union” definitely is something original and intriguing, so
check it out! (Herr Stalhammar)
HIMINBJORG
“Where Ravens
Fly”
Red Stream
Records
rating: 5
of 6
I doubt that
there’re many of you who have ever heard this band before… At least, I
got acquainted with HIMINBJORG only after getting this CD. In the whole,
I feel I have to say that these guys play kind of a ‘Norse sounding war-alike
black metal’, majestic and in the same time extremely dark, with keyboards
forcing the sombre atmosphere (although there’re not much of them here),
sublime male choirs, excellent production (while the musicianship is also
far from being bad), sounding enough sincere, attractive and diverse to
get a good mark. At least, these guys didn’t bore me to death with their
creations – and that’s already a good thing. Somehow I think that despite
those Scandinavia-inspired lyrics, HIMINBJORG may be considered to be a
‘true’ band… (Herr Stalhammar)
HYPOCRISY
“Hypocrisy
Destroys Wacken”
Nuclear Blast
Records
rating: 5
of 6
This CD seems
to be a kind of prelude to their forthcoming “Dubi Dubi Eiteitatei” (what
a title!) album (out in May), or am I wrong? “Hypocrisy Destroys Wacken”
consists of four studio tracks, while other eleven were recorded live.
Well, speaking honestly, those ‘studio tracks’ really surprised me. The
first one is “Time Warp” which appears as pure grinding though atmospheric
death metal piece with 100% hardcorish voice! It’s still HYPOCRISY at it’s
best but in the same time very different from their former creations when
it comes to Peter’s singing. The second tune is “Till The End” which (together
with the fourth one, “Beginning Of The End”) combines hardcore, black and
death metal into one, while “Fuck U” (hmm… I’m wondering about the song’s
contents lyrics-wise…?) sounds a lot like “Time Warp”. Very strange to
hear suchlike stuff from HYPOCRISY, although I can’t say I’m disappointed.
At least, I know of no band that ever combined aforementioned style together.
Live tracks represent the whole band’s career, from “Penetralia”, through
“Osculum Obscenum” and “The Fourth Dimension”, to “Abducted” and “The Final
Chapter”. What’s most important, the sound seems to be the best I’ve ever
heard when it comes to live recordings by extreme metal bands! (Herr Stalhammar)
IMPENDING
DOOM
“Signum Of
Hate”
Perverted
Taste Records
rating: 5
of 6
I was waiting
to get a chance to listen to this CD for a long, long time, since I don’t
have any contacts with Perverted Taste Records, and finally I managed to
buy it. Well, I can say for sure that I didn’t waste my money in vain!
I can’t say if “Signum Of Hate” is better or worse than “Caedes Sacrilegae”,
their former effort, but it’s just as great anyway! IMPENDING DOOM follow
on researching their own style, combining the elements of black, thrash
and heavy metal, although it’s not that brainless crap like INFERNO or
BEWITCHED, for example. These guys are very good in composition, besides
they have enough imagination to produce something different from those
countless black / thrash metal bands. “Signum Of Hate” features very fresh
and fascinating stuff, based on eighties’ death metal (guitars), mixed
with some modern black metal in the Swedish way (atmosphere and melody)
(or am I mistaken…?) as well as some heavy metal (“clean” vocals and choirs).
Check out “Demon-(Mon)archy” or “Forward To Golgotha”! Actually, you’ll
be enslaved by this band’s magic right after you listen to one single song
anyway… (Herr Stalhammar)
IMPERIAL DOMAIN
“In The Ashes
Of The Fallen”
Pulverised
Records
rating: 4,
5 of 6
That’s another
decent CD from Pulverised Records. IMPERIAL DOMAIN come from Sweden and
this effort was recorded at Sunlight Studios, so meeting some melodic death
/ black metal seems inevitable here. Yep, that’s right, but here we have
more death metal album, at least when it comes to vocals which remind me
of AMON AMARTH a bit. And yes, generally speaking, we can compare IMPERIAL
DOMAIN to that band (who also had their debut on Pulverised!) – just like
“Once Sent From The Golden Hall”, this CD is filled with music being extremely
melodic and diverse, featuring plenty of acoustic passages and staggering
harmonies (Sweden’s trademark?) as well as some fantastic solos. It’s not
so fast but more mid-paced, having enough original moves… This is not for
the fans of brutality, more for the romantic souls… All in all: good. (Herr
Stalhammar)
IN THE WOODS…
“Strange
In Stereo”
Misanthropy
Records
rating: 6
of 6
Speaking
honestly, I don’t really know why I placed this review in “black metal”
section. IN THE WOODS… just don’t have anything to do with black metal
anymore, be it good or bad… Maybe those of you who praised “Heart Of The
Ages” will drag this album into shit because of the fact mentioned above,
but don’t expect me to do the same, since I don’t care how we should call
their style now – I just like it at 100%. Each of this band’s efforts was
something different, clearly showing their way from typical Norse black
metal to progressive, avantgarde forms of musical creativity and art… I
doubt if they will create anything more staggering, more exciting and more
impressive than “Strange In Stereo” because this CD is perfect. Musically,
it stands quite close to THE THIRD AND THE MORTAL’s “Painting On Glass”
and “In This Room” with those psychodelic moves, shamanic rhythms and complicated
structures, sick and beautiful in the same time… IN THE WOODS… is a unique
band which doesn’t need just a place near or on the Throne – they deserve
their OWN Throne of Respect, Honour and Esteem, and if you still didn’t
understand it, you’re nothing but a fool. (Herr Stalhammar)
LORD BELIAL
“Unholy Crusade”
No Fashion
Records
rating: 5,
5 of 6
Opening with
“Summon The Beast” intro soaked with the purely sulphur spirit which further
turns into blasting “Unholy Crusade”, this CD clearly proves that I ‘buried’
this band in a somehow ‘prematural’ way. You see, after listening to their
brilliant “Kiss The Goat” CD I considered “Enter The Moonlight Gate” too
chaotic and typical (kinda DARK FUNERAL-alike, you know), however “Unholy
Crusade” brought this act back to life in my eyed. Recorded in Los Angered
Recordings (courtesy of Mr. Andy LaRocque) and featuring the same lineup
as on their former efforts, this CD brings thousand times more fresh, exciting
and diverse stuff… as well as even more grim. The sound is not that chaotic
as it used to be, although Vassago and co. mostly prefer speed with no
limits when playing their parts. No synths here, although some acoustic
may be discovered here and there (often serving as some kind of a background
instead of being placed in one single song as they used to do earlier)
as well as Vassago’s supplementary vokills. Lamia is still here, with her
angelic (?) voice – often singing in a duo with Dark. Also, the songs became
more long (“Death Is The Gate – Mors Iannua Vitae”, my favorite one here,
lasts for almost 11 minutes), featuring more solos which sound quite excellent
(honestly speaking, I didn’t expect such a perfect musicianship from these
guys). Check out “And Heaven Eternally Burns” and “Divide Et Impera”! Well,
actually, as well as all the other tunes here – this CD is simply a must
for any true black metaller! The cover sucks but that’s the only shortcoming
regarding “Unholy Crusade”… (Herr Stalhammar)
LORD WIND
“Forgotten
Songs”
Fullmoon
Productions
rating: 2
of 6
LORD WIND
is a side-project of Darken from GRAVELAND (hail!). Unfortunately, it’s
not as exciting as Rob’s main band. “Forgotten Songs” features very primitive
and somewhat boring ‘pagan / folk ambient’ which didn’t do anything for
me… I doubt if this CD will ‘awake the heathen spirit’ inside of any listener…
(Herr Stalhammar)
MESSE NOIR
“Mandal –
Gate Of The Opening”
Natas Productions
rating: 3
of 6
If I’m not
mistaken, this MCD (despite that it has eight songs, I prefer to consider
it to be a mini, since “Mandal…” lasts only for 18 minutes) appears as
the first official recording from this US band, and unfortunately I can’t
say it’s strong enough for a debut. MESSE NOIR’s style is pure relentless
black / death metal, with fairly good production, although becoming somehow
‘fuzzy’ at times. In spite of it’s short playing time, “Mandal…” even bored
me a bit… You see, it’s just all the same from the beginning till the end
– there’s no visible variety here. Guitars are too ‘noisy’ for me, although
I liked this MCD singing-wise – lyrically referring to Babylonian mythology,
MESSE NOIR’s singer definitely knows how to tear your soul apart by his
inhuman shrieks… Sometimes, it seems that we may compare this band to VITAL
REMAINS, however MESSE NOIR is much more into black metal – while their
music strikes as undoubtedly less intriguing. Mediocre release. (Herr Stalhammar)
MYSTIC CIRCLE
“Drachenblut”
Last Episode
Productions
rating: 3
of 6
I’d give
it ‘1’ as a mark if this CD wasn’t executed in such a splendid way. “Drachenblut”
is already a second output from Germany’s MYSTIC CIRCLE, this time recorded
with Gerhard Magin at Commusication Studios, however it’s not the kind
of stuff I can rate as a ‘masterpiece’. This CD appears as ordinary and
typical symphonic black metal, fast, performed and recorded in a brilliant
way… but thoughtless and insincere. At least that’s what I consider it
to be. (Herr Stalhammar)
NAMANAX
“Audiotronic”
Relapse Records
rating: 5,
5 of 6
It’s a bit
surprising to see this kind of music on Relapse, however, after they released
AMBER ASYLUM’s “The Natural Philosophy Of Love” CD (dark vanguard ambient-alike
creations), and after discovering that among others (James Plotkin and
Kipp Johnson – familiar names, eh?) NAMANAX’s lineup includes Bill Yurkiewicz
(guitars, bass, samples, power electronics and synthesizers), I wasn’t
surprised anymore. NAMANAX’s stuff appears as very interesting version
of what will be if a piece of black / noise / industrial art would be created
by three TALENTED individuals. And the outcome is really great, I should
admit! This 5-song CD lasts for eternity but doesn’t become boring at all;
quite the contrary – it charms (hmm…) and devours the listener, appearing
as a magic spell of darkness penetrating your very essense and immediately
absorbing it… Anxious, weird and incredibly grim… this is how “Audiotronic”
may be described in a poor human language… (Herr Stalhammar)
NEBULAR MOON
“Mourning”
Last Episode
Productions
rating: 1
of 6
Absolutely
faceless band pretending to be ‘black metal’. As it often happens nowadays,
“Mourning” is a well executed album but lacking any originality, attractiveness
and sincerity. Usual sympho-black as it was done thousand times before.
I’m getting really tired of this ‘sympho-trend’… (Herr Stalhammar)
NOCTES
“Vexilla
Regis Prodeunt INFERNI”
No Fashion
Records
rating: 5,
5 of 6
What the
fuck?! This is already the fourth CD from No Fashion I’m giving a listen
this evening and it deserves a mark no less than ‘5, 5’ of ‘6’! What happened
to this label? I mean, I liked only few CDs from them in the past (such
as LORD BELIAL’s “Kiss The Goat” or MORK GRYNING’s “Return Fire”) while
others really bored me to death (A CANOROUS QUINTET’s “The Only Pure Hate”,
or OPHTHALAMIA’s “Dominion”). But here comes NOCTES with a second album,
this time even better than their “Pandemonic Requiem” CD reviewed in one
of the former issues. Don’t you remember that one? Then let me remind you:
“Basically, NOCTES don’t open any new ‘horizons’, combining all those typical
Swedish elements, however they do it much better than many, many alike
bands. Here I also have to mark out the splendid guitar work. Surely, you
may ask - «What’s so strange in it? Majority of Swedish black / death
metal bands own very skillful and talented guitarists...» Indeed,
but Holger Thorsin isn’t just ‘skillful’, he’s an outstanding musician,
as well as Pasi who rules over rhythm guitar! Yes, seems like 99% of Swedes
are almost perfect guitarists, but how much albums with plenty of tremendous
solos and inimitable harmonies do you remember? And what if I’ll tell you
that «Pandemonic Requiem» features not only above-mentioned
things, but also a brilliant, crystal-clear production (Sunlight Studio!)
which strikes as the reason why EVERY SINGLE RIFF CAN BE HEARD HERE?!”
This is the quotation from my review on “Pandemonic Requiem”. In fact,
I don’t know if I need to add anything else here. “Vexilla Regis Prodeunt
INFERNI” developes the musical line first featured on “Pandemonic Requiem”,
being more ‘innovative and experimental’; it ‘takes off where the previous
album left us, to another dimension high above’ as it said in the bio.
It’s a way more diverse, bringing plenty of fresh elements, such as “clean”
choir-alike singing and more varied harmonies… some keyboards as well,
sounding almost romantic at times. This is also more melodic stuff, although
still mostly fast-paced and brutal Swedish black / death metal at it’s
best. Moreover, Swedish black / death metal with ORIGINALITY… (Herr Stalhammar)
NOCTIS INVOCAT
“Depressiva
Vox Clamantis”
Southern
Hellish Productions
rating: 4
of 6
A black metal
band from Guatemala? Sounds interesting. However, judging by their sound,
this band doesn’t represent anything outstanding or innovative. Just doomy
black metal, rather decent, with good production, well-crafted song structures,
nice musicianship and wide variety of vocals. The certain mystique atmosphere
is here as well… I don’t know really, this CD doesn’t make me excited too
much, although, at least it is thousand times more impressive (and sincere!)
than countless efforts by European black metal acts. Try it. (Herr Stalhammar)
NOCTI VAGUS
“Venture
In Sombre Passion”
Solistitium
Records
rating: BULLSHIT
Fags… I always
respected Solistitium for releasing utterly stupendous stuff – and after
I saw “Solistitium” label on this CD, I’ve bought it immediately expecting
to have a chance to listen to one more truly stunning and exciting black
metal piece… I was too wrong… It seems like NOCTI VAGUS couldn’t play even
punk if they wanted to… Shitty sound and lack of musicianship, only numerous
cliches… If anyone of you needs one more band cloning early IMMORTAL in
a disgusting way… get it. But then just stop reading this mag right now.
We already has THY GRIEF, almost a faceless band on Solistitium (though
still ‘promising’), and here we have one more crap, even worse…??? I’ll
better forget about this label… (Herr Stalhammar)
NOKTURNAL
MORTUM
“To The Gates
Of Blasphemous Fire”
The End Records
rating: 4
of 6
Finally,
a brand new CD from most famous Ukrainian black metal act, a CD which is
licenced by Nuclear Blast (!!!) in Europe… “Goat Horns” appeared as some
kind of disappointment to me, being undoubtedly weaker than “Lunar Poetry”,
their first ‘official’ effort. I was waiting for this album quite impatiently
expecting it to be a step forward, a worthy follow-up to “Lunar Poetry”,
but unfortunately it’s not that impressive… “To The Gates Of Blasphemous
Fire” portrays the utter loss of originality, sounding like a CD from an
EMPEROR-clone – check out any song here and you’ll see that I’m not lying
to you! This, however, doesn’t mean that it’s utterly worthless, not at
all. It has very good and exciting tracks like “On The Moonlight Path”,
“Bestial Summoning” and “The Hands Of Chaos”, also reminding a lot of lat
EMPEROR, although with certain doze of originality and NOKTURNAL MORTUM’s
former (original) sound. There’re also two tracks which make this album
more various musically: an instrumental tune, “Cheremosh”, and “The Forgotten
Ages Of Victories” which is done in a more melodic vein, appearing as somehow
even sublime piece. In general, I think no one would consider “To The Gates
Of Blasphemous Fire” a failure – it’s still good work, representing extremely
atmospheric and sincere (?) black metal, hell as fast, though sometimes
mid-paced, with enough diversity, splendid sound and musicianship. Those
who don’t care about originality too much should check it out… By the way,
Ukraine’s Oriana Productions released the same album, although with a bit
different design, and additional bonus track, “Cherez Rechku, Cherez Krai”
which is an Ukrainian traditional song! (Herr Stalhammar)
ODHINN
“From A Splendourus
Battle”
Napalm Records
rating: 4,
5 of 6
ODHINN is
a band featuring some IN BATTLE members, therefore it strikes as a worthy
one. “From A Splendourus Battle” is done in the vein of IN BATTLE’s “Rage
Of The Northmen”, but more calm and mid-paced sometimes with few sfx’s;
various enough to keep you excited. Drumming is beyond any critics, no
doubts… Good, but I liked IN BATTLE’s stuff better. (Herr Stalhammar)
ODHINN
“The North
Brigade”
Napalm Records
rating: 6
of 6
Wow! I could
expect anything from this band - but this…??? ODHINN turned to one-man
band led by John Ostlund shortly after “From A Splendourus Battle” was
released, and the style also was changed in a drastical way! You see, nowadays
we have more and more bands producing something that, perhaps, could be
defined as ‘progressive’ or ‘vanguard’ black metal – just recall KOROVA,
PECCATUS, SOLEFALD, SYNC or TRIFIXION. And now we have ODHINN. After I
took this CD in my arms and looked at the song-titles (f.ex. such as “Elder
Gods Of The North”, “Speech Of Odin” or “Northern Throne”), I expected
it to be either a blasting northern holocaust in the vein of IN BATTLE,
or something in the vein of ENSLAVED, i.e. ordinary viking metal from the
lands of North. Ha! There’s nothing like that! I bet no one would be able
to describe what is going on here… “The North Brigade” follows the way
of aforementioned ‘progressive’ bands (I mean KOROVA and others of that
ilk). ODHINN’s stuff is really complicated and even too much diverse, with
exciting and sometimes almost sick moves, however it never gets boring
or incomprehensible. Oh, this album has so much different atmospheres and
moods, lots of various breaks, varying from one ‘space’ to another with
each song… Here we have a triumph of hellish forces, and right after –
some northern landscaped brought into music… evil gurgling and plenty of
“clean” voices, choirs and almost King Diamond-alike singing… melodic parts
and totally holocaustic passages… ‘Normal’ pieces and the ones that are
utterly avantgarde… Oh no, I can’t speak anymore… (Herr Stalhammar)
OPETH
“My Arms,
Your Hearse”
Candlelight
Records
rating: 6
of 6
This one
is a bit worse than “Orchid” and “Morningrise”, but still quite excellent…
Tremendous virtuosity, brilliant production, staggering variety and plenty

impressive Swedish acts I’ve ever heard. (Lazar)
PAGAN WINTER
“Inferos”
Last Episode
Productions
rating: 3
of 6
This band
reminds me a bit of their countrymates, TSATTHOGGUA, with their all-devouring,
nuclear form of violent black metal influenced by WWII (hmm…?), at least
that’s what I think. If it was more diverse, the mark could be much better…
Those who are into relentless black / death metal should check it out,
though. (Herr Stalhammar)
PECCATUS
“Strangling
From Within”
Candlelight
Records
rating: 5,
5 of 6
PECCATUS
is a trio, including Ihsahn of EMPEROR among others, hence I believe that
it was inevitably worthy band even before it was formed… “Strangling From
Within” appears as very weird CD, featuring extremely vanguard progressive
sympho-black metal, sometimes turning into pure insanity, with female voices
and ala-KING DIAMOND male vocals here and there… It’s a bit difficult to
get into it right after the first listen, but later… Ah, I became a miserable
slave of this band’s art, weird and fascinating… Only for open minded people.
(Herr Stalhammar)
THE PROTAGONIST
“A Rebours”
Cold Meat
Industry
rating: 5,
5 of 6
Someone told
me that THE PROTAGONIST is a band led by Peter of ARCANA…? I don’t know
if it’s truth, but “A Rebours” COULD be created by herr Pettersson, it’s
just as bewitching and tremendous, - tremendous in a dark way, - featuring
absolutely amazing atmosphere captured throughout the whole CD. “Kampfende
Pferde”, “Mutability” and “The Puritan” are the best examples to afore-cited
words, I think. Musically, “A Rebours” is a unique form of arcane, anxious
ambient… the Darker Art… With those stunning orchestrations, choirs and
absolutely astounding arrangements it strikes as one of the best albums
of a kind I’ve heard this (1999th) year… Of course, someone would draw
parallels with DEAD CAN DANCE, others – with Danzig’s “Black Aria” and
aforementioned ARCANA as well as ORDO EQUILIBRIO and PENITENT, but… I don’t
care. I consider THE PROTAGONIST to be an original band (if it’s ever possible
within the strict bounds of such genre as ambient), moreover – the one
possessing inimitable, charming and in the same time extremely perturbed
sound. When I hear suchlike stuff, I just can’t stay motionless… BRILLIANT
(in fact, just like anything else from Cold Meat Industry). (Herr Stalhammar)
SARGATANAS
“The Enlightenment”
Conquistador
Records
rating: 3,
5 of 6
Perhaps,
you remember that I dragged this band’s former MCD into shit reviewing
it in the previous issue… and fortunately, I have to write better review
this time. “The Enlightenment” is the first full-length CD from this Mexico’s
band, conceived back in 1986. Comprised of twelve tracks and lasting for
eternity, this CD features some totally evil, satanic death / black metal,
musically being under a heavy influence of such gods as POSSESSED (early)
and NECROVORE. It’s very well executed, performed in a decent way… although
too boring sometimes. Well, honestly speaking, more likely ‘often’ than
‘sometimes’. More variety, atmosphere and sincerity would be great. Not
bad, but could be thousand times better. (Herr Stalhammar)
SATARIEL
“Lady Lust
Lilith”
Pulverised
Records
rating: A
MASTERPIECE
This is the
best CD ever recorded at Sunlight Studio, no doubts!!! And something tells
me that there’s a strong possibility of SATARIEL being the most original
Sweden’s black metal act!!! I can’t even find the appopriate words to describe
this amazing effort… The opening track, “Devil’s Dozen (XIII)”, begins
with fast drumming and skullcrushing riffs but later turns into something
based on traditional Swedish black / death metal – however these guys have
enough brains to recreate and reproduce the heritage of such acts as AT
THE GATES or IN FLAMES and, therefore, compose and perform unique and highly
original music with mesmerizing solos and harmonies, staggering arrangements
and great variety of vocals (“clean” ones sound just killer!), hence this
CD never gets boring. You listen to it being truly excited and when it
ends you simply play it over again… Believe me, this album will become
one of your favorites once after you listen to it! SATARIEL don’t seem
to bring anything special and, as already said, their creations have a
traditional basis, but surprisingly (?) “Lady Lust Lilith” sounds totally
different from other Swedish bands; and also thousand times better! All
tracks are splendid, but to mark out the most stunning ones, these are
“Devil’s Dozen”, “The Well Of The Artist”, “4 Moons Till Rising”, “Lady
Lust Lilith” and “A Vision Of An Ending”… Eternal hails to mighty Pulverised
Records for releasing such a masterpiece!!!!!! (Herr Stalhammar)
SATHANAS
“Armies Of
Charon”
Conquistador
Records
rating: 5,
5 of 6
Intro and
ten tracks of excellent black / death metal is what you’ll face after buying
this CD. I can’t say if it’s original or not, but sometimes I simply don’t
care about such thing as originality… I mean, when band’s creations are
so exciting that even naming thousands comparisons won’t harm me to enjoy
their works. Coming from the United States, SATHANAS appears as rather
old band (just like all others on Conquistador, the sub-division of England’s
Supernal Music), however “Armies Of Charon” is the very first release in
the shape of an ‘official’ CD. I don’t know what prevented them from releasing
it years ago, and only feel sorry that it didn’t happen so we could get
ourselves acquainted with such a magnificent band earlier. Their style
is a perfect, honest mixture of true unholy death metal and somehow raw
though competent black with impressive musicianship (I just love those
pounding drums!) and production which is a bit weak, however, surprisingly,
it does only good for the band… I bet that SATHANAS would sound incredibly
less impressive with a ‘polished’ sound. (Herr Stalhammar)
SCHOLOMANCE
“A Treatise
On Love”
The End Records
rating: 5
of 6
Ooh… It’s
always very difficult to review such albums as this one. It’s just impossible
to compare them to anyone as well as to define their style… No doubts that
SCHOLOMANCE is a very innovative band, with their own non-typical view
upon extreme forms of music… “A Treatise On Love” is like a breath of the
fresh air if talking about contemporary metal scene overflooded with faceless
clones… Composed of two musical geniuses, Scott Crinklaw and Jimmy Pitts
(+ Jerry Twyford on session bass guitar), this band presents us some totally
weird, progressive stuff with strange lyrical concept, something to be
defined as ‘dark metal’… a wicked mixture of black and death metal, dark
wave, folklore, featuring extremely complicated structures, so diverse
that it even becomes something like a ‘hard drugs experience’ sometimes…
No, I can’t say anything else, I just can’t find the appropriate words,
so let’s recall the famous words, “Sometimes words can not say what the
heart feels. Music can express the things that our language cannot”. Concluding
this review, I have to admit that “A Treatise On Love” comes with an excellent
layout, very well thoughtout, fitting perfectly the lyrical part of this
CD. (Herr Stalhammar)
SETH
“Les Blessures
De L’Ame”
Season Of
Mist Productions
rating: 2
of 6
A great disappointment
is what I’ve felt after listening to this CD, a second one from France’s
SETH during 1998. While the first one, “By Fire, Power Shall Be…”, portrayed
this band as a promising one, “Les Blessures De L’Ame” makes obvious the
fact that SETH is only a regular faceless sympho-black metal act trying
to gain some attention. However, those who’re heavily into DIMMU BORGIR-alike
stuff lacking any originality may check it out anyway… (Herr Stalhammar)
SLOGUN
“The Pleasures
Of Death”
Death Factory
rating: 5
of 6
Very good
and impressive black / noise / industrial from USA. It’s always very difficult
to describe suchlike efforts, you see. How would you describe NOISE? Pure
noise with variety, and nothing else? I can’t say too much here… maybe
only to praise the unique atmosphere captured on “The Pleasures Of Death”
as well as the interesting experiments with samples and human voice. This
is a must for all BRIGHTER DEATH NOW-alike stuff fans. (Herr Stalhammar)
SORATH
“Gnosis”
Leviathan
Records
rating: 4,
5 of 6
If I’m not
mistaken, this is a second black metal CD from Czechia’s Leviathan Records,
and, although it’s not as great as ASTRAL’s “Magia Eon…”, it’s still a
very good album. Surprisingly good, I’d say. Why ‘surprisingly’? Well,
I was already familiar with this band thanks to their split-CD with UNCLEAN,
and their “Matache Chavala” didn’t impress me at all. I couldn’t even imagine
that this band has any future with such a soulless music – at least, it
WAS soulless and utterly faceless back in 1996. Seems like they understood
their mistakes, since I could never call “Gnosis” a worthless CD. It’s
a bit strange to listen to the CD from a Czech band which a) doesn’t sound
Czech at all and b) whose lyrics are all in English. But that’s exactly
what SORATH offer this time. They sound more like a Swedish band with that
somehow even polished (hmm…) production and unusually (for Czechia’s band,
of course) melodic and well-executed guitar passages and leads. Vocals
is the only point here which didn’t impress me the way it had to, however
I won’t say that it is a serious drawback. “Gnosis” also includes few tracks
taken from their old demo tape, which are thousand times less exciting,
but in the same time they appear as a perfect proof of SORATH’s development
throughout years. Highly recommended. (Herr Stalhammar)
SYNC
“Variations
About Themes Of Darkness”
Ematofagia
Records
rating: 3
of 6
Did you ever
listen to the CD featuring a mixture of black and techno-thrash metal?
I did with “Variations About Themes Of Darkness”. In fact, the only thing
I had to do is to praise suchlike movements, but these guys spawned something
really incomprehensible… Any kind of music, even the most utter delirium,
demand certain laws which can’t be violated, however SYNC don’t seem to
give a damn about it. They just do what they want to, being absolutely
careless when it comes to their listeners… No doubts that it’s original
stuff, but that’s just too sick and ‘non-musical’ for me… (Lazar)
TAAKE
“Nattestid…”
Wounded Love
Records
rating: 3,
5 of 6
After such
brilliant CDs from Wounded Love as GODKILLER’s “The End Of The World” and
OBTAINED ENSLAVEMENT’s “Witchcraft”, this one seems to be quite mediocre.
TAAKE just blindingly follow the path of HADES, TRELLDOM and BORKNAGAR
(circa “Borknagar” CD) with their totally “Norse-inspired” black metal
with those incredibly raw guitars (an attempt to be “true”?? And as pathetic
as DARKTHRONE…? Heh…), minimum of variety (cliche) and some pseudo-viking
chants (cliche). In contrast to all the aforementioned bands, TAAKE doesn’t
have that variety; moreover, these guys don’t seem to care about originality…
Nevetheless, I should say that this album (recorded at Grieghallen, by
the way) has some very pleasant and exciting passages and even few songs
which sound decent in a whole! If you come from Norway, this CD is for
you. If not… then it depends on your personal tastes only. (Herr Stalhammar)
TANGRYCAN
“Signing
The Flare Up Fires”
Counter Attack
Productions
rating: 3
of 6
This effort
is the first one I’ve heard from a BM band coming from Bulgaria, and unfortunately
I have to admit that it could be much better… TANGRYCAN is too primitive
and monotonous in terms of music, also the drummachine only spoils the
whole atmosphere… “Signing The Flare Up Fires” could be quite decent (or
at least, “not bad”) effort without those annoying vocals, sounding like
Donald Duck’s being angry… just like true Norway’s penguin, ha ha! (Herr
Stalhammar)
THIRD MOON
“Aquis Submersus”
Napalm Records
rating: 5
of 6
“Aquis Submersus”,
being a second effort from this Austrian band, is really different from
their debut effort, “Grotesque Autumnal Weepings”, different in a positive
way. While “Grotesque…” was nothing but a usual and clichesque atmospheric
black metal, done the way it was done thousand times before, this CD brings
something undoubtedly exciting! Being compiled of eleven tunes, it brings
certain melodic stuff, based on guitars (very well played, by the way!),
with snarling vokills and some keyboards to complete the whole canvas.
What really attracts (and surprises) me here is the sound which is unusually
sharp and almost crystal clear… speaking plainer, in the terms of production
“Aquis Submersus” is the best BM effort I’ve heard for months or maybe
even years… That’s where we can compare them with latest ROTTING CHRIST,
since musically they sound a lot like them also. Good stuff, check it out!
(Herr Stalhammar)
THROES OF
DAWN
“Dreams Of
The Black Earth”
Woodcut Records
rating: 5,
5 of 6
Ah…! If all
BM efforts were as great as this one, I’d never listen to anything except
black metal… However, unfortunately, the scene seems to be overflooded
with hundreds (thousands? millions?) of BM acts; most of them sound utterly
similar to each other, or just cloning their source of inspiration. Once
again I’d say “unfortunately”, but this time in regards to Finland, since
it spawns lots of bands, although there’re only few of them who may pretend
to reach anything. THROES OF DAWN is among of those few. “Dreams Of The
Black Earth” is the second CD from them – “Pakkasherra” was the first one
and, despite it’s definite originality, I didn’t like it too much. Lucky
me, this album is thousand times better. The THROES OF DAWN guys managed
to keep all the best featured on their former CD, but in the same time,
contrived to make their creations incredibly more various and thoughtout
(should I say that “Dreams…” has a better production, this time recorded
at Tico Tico?)… It’s a perfect mix of black and heavy metal (although they
don’t have anything in common with such groups as AUBERON, for example)
with stunning leads, lots of sympho-elements (which don’t harm or weaken
their sound at all… THROES OF DAWN is still a METAL band, not some pussy
shit), tremendous acoustic passages and few harmonic vocals here and there.
Diversity is one of the strongest parts of this act: all songs, being a
single whole, sound different to each other… “Spring Blooms With Flower
Dead” is, no doubts, a best tune here, a quintessence of all the best offered
by this band, along with an instumental tune, “Titania”… Check out “Of
Scarlet Skies Made” as well which seems to be the most unusual song on
this CD… the CD which is A MUST for everyone!!! (Herr Stalhammar)
THY PRIMORDIAL
“Under Iskall
Troll Mane”
Gothic Records
rating: 5
of 6
Ironically,
“Under Iskall Troll Mane” was recorded back in 1995, appearing as the first
album from this band, although it was unleashed only in 1998, a year after
their second CD, “Where Only The Seasons Mark The Paths Of Time”, found
it’s way on the market! Anyway, it’s better later than never, right? This
effort brings some diabolical black metal in it’s purest, keyboardless
form. It’s rather similar to “Where Only The Seasons…”, however few differences
are here as well. First of all, the lyrics are all Swedish-written (with
an exception for “The Impression Of War”), and secondly, it has undoubtedly
more emphasis on melody… Despite that there’re no synths, flutes or female
voices here, this CD never becomes boring. It’s fast, although often becoming
mid-paced, true anti-christian music with stupendous drumming (hail, Morth!),
powerful riffs and leads (not some Norwegian buzz, you know) packed with
weird and totally depraved vokills by Isidor… “De Viskande Tradens Skog”
and “Bortom Nattsvart Himmel” tracks are my favorites here. (Herr Stalhammar)

Of Untrodden Wonder”
Pulverised

rating: 5,

+ INDUNGEON
“The Misanthropocalypse”
Invasion
Records
rating: 4,
5 of 6
Wow! Shortly
after I got the “Under Iskall Troll Mane” CD, their newest creation found
it’s way into my postbox. Do I need to say that this one is (undoubtedly)
better than THY PRIMORDIAL’s both former efforts?! In fact, they almost
didn’t change their style at all (and that’s great!), it’s still that pure
hellish black metal, true to the bone. However, few innovations are here
as well: firstly, “At The World Of Untrodden Wonder” was recorded in Sunlight
Studio, hence the sound quality is top-notch (in contrast to f.ex. “Under
Iskall Troll Mane”). Secondly, this CD features some powerful “clean” vocals
by Isidor and more variety than before… At least, this output is much more
exciting to listen to than, for example, “Where Only The Seasons Mark The
Paths Of Time”. As I already said, it brings truly diabolical and atmospheric
black metal, sometimes slow and majestic but mostly fast as hell. Of course,
one may compare this band to some others, like NOX INTEMPESTA, SATYRICON,
MARDUK (circa “Heaven Shall Burn…”) or SETHERIAL, but my opinion is that
THY PRIMORDIAL contrive to capture some originality anyway. Coming with
an amazing design and layout from Singapore’s Pulverised Records (hail!!!),
this one will be a perfect gift to any of the self-esteeming black metallers.
But that’s not all… Together with “At The World Of Untrodden Wonder”, I
got a new CD from INDUNGEON, the band whose lineup features Micke Andersson
and Jonas Albrektsson of THY PRIMORDIAL together with Karl Beckman and
Stefan Weinerhall of another famous Swedish band, MITHOTYN. Musically (as
well as lyrically) this band is very different from both aforementioned
acts. It is some unusually melodic black metal with few influences borrowed
from usual heavy metal (at least when it comes to those guitar harmonies),
lyrically dealing with the subject of War and everything pertinent to it
(such song titles as “Genocide”, “Propaganda Of War” and “Battletank No.
II” already say a lot, I believe). Just like “At The World Of Untrodden
Wonder”, this CD’s layout is done in a great way (I especially like that
photo inside the booklet; the one which portrays the guys standing around
(and sitting on) the old Volkswagen with the “GER 666” number-plate). The
lyrics are quite excellent, while the music also leaves good impression;
consequently, I bet you have to check it out! (Herr Stalhammar)
THYRANE
“Black Harmony”
Woodcut Records
rating: 3
of 6
Here’s another
brand new CD from Finland’s Woodcut Recs, however, in contrast to “Dreams
Of The Black Earth” by THROES OF DAWN, it didn’t impress me that much…
“Black Harmony” consists of four tracks lasting for 35 minutes (hmm, can
we consider it a mini-CD??), representing symphonic black metal in the
vein of THY SERPENT and late DIMMU BORGIR (circa “Enthrone Darkness Triumphant”
and “Spiritual Black Dimensions” CDs), with top-notch sound and performance…
but unfortunately, it’s not that spirited as the words by aforementioned
bands… Anyway, in my view, THYRANE have brighter future then such absolutely
faceless acts as f.ex. NEBULAR MOON or MYSTIC CIRCLE… (Herr Stalhammar)
THY SERPENT
“Christcrusher”
Spinefarm
Records
rating: 5
of 6
“Christcrusher”
is a piece of fine atmospheric black metal with perfect sound. The music
becomes a bit monotonous sometimes, and that’s the only shortcoming I could
find here… Speaking generally, my impressions were all positive. Perhaps,
if the producership was worse, I’d give ‘em lower mark, but… there’s nothing
I can cavil at. What a pity… (Lazar)
TRIFIXION
“Abschurfungepoch”
Ematofagia
Records
rating: 4
of 6
I always
liked different kinds of experiments when it comes to black metal, so I
guess it’s evident why I gave this CD with a hard-to-spell title a good
mark. TRIFIXION was born as a project of Trifixion, ex-drummer of Austria’s
SUMMONING, and it’s debut CD, “The First And The Last Commandment” (1994),
appeared as quite raw but very technical and hateful black metal with obvious
craving for some originality. A lot of time passed since then and I almost
started to consider this band to be defunct, however they finally released
the second effort of their, surprisingly recorded in 1995 (??!?!?). “Abschurfungepoch”
appears as totally different stuff if comparing to TRIFIXION’s previous
CD. It sounds quite close to late IN THE WOODS…, i.e. it’s a research in
‘what will we have after mixing black metal, dark wave and vanguard’. Quite
pleasing research, I’d say… Sometimes it becomes a bit annoying and incomprehensible,
but in general it’s very original and impressive effort. Get it! (Herr
Stalhammar)
TYPHON
“Unholy Trilogy”
Warmaster
Records
rating: 5
of 6
“Unholy Trilogy”
(did they mean “unholy trinity”??) has been released more than two years
ago, and usually I don’t review such albums here, however since I got this
one only a month ago, and since “Unholy Trilogy” truly kicks ass, I decided
to review it anyway. TYPHON comes from Colombia and their music definitely
appears of interest to any black metal fan, despite somehow childish attitude
and lyrics (I wouldn’t say that such titles as “Magnificent Ritual Killer”,
“Fuckin’ Jesus”, “Worshipper Of Darkness” sound very intellectual). Moreover,
TYPHON’s style is very unusual for South America and for all the black
metal genre in the whole! Musically it’s more thrash / heavy metal, very
melodic, with stunning rhythm guitar passages and leads, mixed with Barzuth’s
insane croaking which, actually, doesn’t seem to fit the music… The other
shortcoming goes for too ‘thin’ sound – second guitar is a necessity in
order to make the sound more thick and powerful. But in general, TYPHON
is a very promising band featuring extremely talented musicians… Colombia
produces very small amount of black metal bands but, just like in case
with Ireland, all of them strike as quite excellent acts… If you don’t
believe me, check out this CD, as well as the albums from TENEBRARUM or
INQUISITION… (Herr Stalhammar)
VANAHEIM
“Helter Og
Kongers Fall”
self-released
rating: 5
of 6
I’m wondering
why these guys aren’t signed yet to some major label? In my ears, their
music sounds very distinctive and original in order to be (at least) noticed.
This seven-man act comes from Norway and, when I got their CD, I feared
it will turn out as a regular Norwegian “DARKTHRONE-inspired” meaningless
and incomprehensible buzz, however, despite that it’s undoubtedly Norse-sounding,
“Helter Og Kongers Fall” doesn’t have anything to do with most of their
countrymates’ stuff. It’s very melodic (not cheesy or commercial, though!
Please, remember that!) and powerful stuff, with a lot of singing styles
incorporated (highly pleasant “clean” voice sometimes turning into choir-alike
singing, pseudo-death metal growling, some husky voices as well as typical
BM screams (very little)), decent guitar work, few synths here and there
and nearly perfect production. All of the tunes that can be found on this
CD sound extremely sublime and majestic, although not grim or anxious at
all… more likely romantic… tremendous. VANAHEIM look like quite original
band, however one can easily compare ‘em to EINHERJER’s “Odin Owns Ye All”.
The main idea is almost the same: melodic and powerful (as said above)
pagan heavy metal based on Scandinavia’s folklore. Ohh… do you really think
I should add anything? Well, ok, this CD comes with great artwork and magnificent
design / layout, so you’d better check it out… Here’s their contact address:

VILKATES
“Angeldust
And Blasphemy”
Last Episode
Productions
rating: 3
of 6
This is nothing
really bad, though nothing really good either. VILKATES play straight-forward
atmospheric black metal the way it was done millions times before… There’re
no impressive moves or bewitching harmonies here; both, production and
performance are quite good though far from being splendid. In short, it’s
very mediocre release with hackneyed song titles like “Wings Of Darkness”,
“Demonworld” and “Total Extermination”… The only good point here goes for
excellent “clean” vocals – the ONLY thing which is truly good when it comes
to “Angeldust And Blasphemy” CD. (Herr Stalhammar)
VINTERSORG
“Till Fjalls”
Napalm Records
rating: 6
of 6
I already
praised VINTERSORG’s former MCD to the skies in the previous issue, so
I don’t really know why I’m writing this one. All the words will be the
same… For those who didn’t have a chance to get acquainted with their “Hedniskhjartad”
mini – VINTERSORG was formed as a side-project by Vintersorg from OTYG,
Swedish folk / black metallers (also signed to Napalm), musically being
quite similar to OTYG, although more black metallish. “Till Fjalls” is
a perfect continuation of all Vintersorg have done before, however this
time much more various, and developed when it comes to composition. This
CD features brilliant black metal with certain folk elements, composed
and performed in a pure Northern way, although it’s not so archaic and
primitive as majority of Norway’s and Sweden’s acts. Guitar passages are
really fine (forget about such word as ‘raw’, at least when it comes to
this album), and solos leave undoubtedly good impressions. Often it seems
like this guy draws his inspiration in heavy metal… those often-repeating
and memorable refrains as well as guitar work heavily remind me of bands
like MAGNITUDE 9 or GAMMA RAY… We also have some female voices here, which
don’t harm anything, but in the same time don’t do anything good for the
band. The songs themselves are very memorable (I bet, a lot of you will
consider this band to be ‘commercial’ after listening to “Till Fjalls”,
however I don’t care), written and performed in an utterly sincere and
honest way… Check out “Vidmarkens Fortrollande Stammor” or “Fangad Utav
Nordens Sjal” for instance, and you won’t have any chance to argue with
me regarding afore-cited words. Besides, the fact of Vargher’s (ANCIENT
WISDOM, THRONE OF AHAZ, BEWITCHED) participation on this CD as a ‘keymaster’
is also worth attention. In short – this is A MUST. (Herr Stalhammar)
VORAK
“Rhetoric
Of The Supermen”
Destruktive
Kommandoh
rating: 4
of 6
This is interesting.
Some ambient / industrial stuff mixed with techno beat-alike drums, insane
‘child-alike’ (?) tortured screams and guitar leads reminding me of IRON
MAIDEN’s “Wasted Years” intro + two Wagner’s compositions as the bonus
tracks… Well, in fact it sounds a bit different to all ambient / industrial
bands I’ve heard. Also add some nazi attitude and you’ll get the kind of
CD you should listen to. (Herr Stalhammar)
WELTER
“The Elder
Land”
Berzerker
Records
rating: 0
of 6
WHAT THE
FUCK IS THIS????????????? Berzerker Recs promotes them as a ‘splendid mix
of the epic BATHORY, folk, FALKENBACH, originality and BURZUM-alike black
metal’, however with the lyrics like “Don’t fuck with us, we’ll kick your
ass! … We’ll step upon your little toes! –The law of the North –If we want,
we’ll break your nose!” this “band” seems to be a fucking joke to me! Also,
Herr Krieger’s mug shouldn’t be featured inside the CD’s booklet by any
means, since he looks like certain 15-year old kid (or maybe even younger!),
pretending to be some ‘true heathen-blackmetaller-supporting-the-NS-ideas’
although it’s nothing but a regular face of trend in my view. At least,
the music doesn’t carry any trace of sincerity or true feelings… Just some
childish crap pretending to be worth something… Idiotic lyrics, stupid
booklet and pathetic music… Further, Berzerker will be releasing a debut
CD from ROD, Russia’s poser band #1, so it looks like we have another label
supporting the trend. Well, “fuck off” is the only thing I can say here.
Let’s hope that both, WELTER and Berzerker (Fag)ords will cease to exist
in the nearest time to come. (Herr Stalhammar)
WINTER NIGHT
OVERTURE
“Weapon Against
The God”
self-released
rating: 5
of 6
“Weapon Against
The God” is a second official release from this Estonian band, and also
much better than their former “Incarnated In The Fire” demo… This six-track
MCD doesn’t feature any synths, violins or female voices – it’s just pure
apocalyptic hatred, performed in the most evil way one can imagine. It’s
always a pleasure to discover such band as WINTER NIGHT OVERTURE – compiled
of individuals true to their ideals, utmost sincere and honest in everything
they do and create… I didn’t associate with this band too much, but something
tells me that I’m right… and this ‘something’ is their music. Grim and
unholy, a bit naive when it comes to lyrics (although “The Realization”
has some really good verses), hateful and dark… They didn’t gain in originality
by creating suchlike stuff, but who cares anyway? Of course, reminiscenes
of DARKTHRONE’s “Transilvanian Hunger” and “Panzerfaust” are inevitable
here, although in my view this Estonians managed to compose more thoughtout
and less primitive music, being well-executed and performed in a fairly
good way. Highly recommended. (Herr Stalhammar)
WHERE ECHOES
END
“By The Pricking
Of My Thumb”
Beaks Ahoy
rating: 5
of 6
It’s always
very difficult to review CDs created in the genre I use to call ‘ambient’,
moreover – it’s even more difficult to review CDs which can’t be labeled
at all, eventhough they have some ‘ambiental’ elements. Like “By The Pricking
Of My Thumb”, for example (a quote from Shakespear’s “Macbeth” gave birth
to this album’s title, I believe). This band was born out of decline. The
decline of another band, VAUXDVIHL, who even released a CD once, made in
the vein of FATES WARNING and DREAM THEATER. “By The Pricking Of My Thumb”
is ‘progressive’ as well, although it doesn’t have anything to do with
metal. This effort combines ambient, neo-classical, tribal and electronic
elements into one, thus creating something nearly unique! The artwork and
design (in terms of graphic) are amazing, but what really attracts me here
is the lyrical concept. Being inspired by the works of Carlos Castaneda,
Lyall Watson, Paul Davies and Richard Leakey when it comes to literature
and the relationship between genetics, human behavior, culture, science,
politics, mysticism and religion when it comes to sociological factors,
this duo created a soundtrack to a ‘nightmarish vision of how greed creates
prisoners of us’, as it said in the bio. By the way, this CD really DOES
sound as a ‘soundtrack’ sometimes… Musically, it’s extremely various though
still comprehensible, featuring tons of diverse synth’s arrangements, noises,
loops, samples, programming and distant voices… Once it seems to be a classical
music-inspired stuff, then – something in the vein of DEAD CAN DANCE, but
later you have almost a techno, although made in that inimitable atmospheric
way as all the other tunes on this CD. Highly recommended. (Herr Stalhammar)
WITCHERY
“Witchburner”
Necropolis
Records
rating: 4
of 6
This is already
a second effort from Sweden’s WITCHERY, the band featuring such people
as Jensen of THE HAUNTED and Sharlee D’Angelo of MERCYFUL FATE… This time
it’s an MCD with three songs from WITCHERY as well as four covers (“Fast
As A Shark” from ACCEPT, “I Wanna Be Somebody” by W. A. S. P., “Neon Knights”
by BLACK SABBATH and “Riding On The Wind” by JUDAS PRIEST). Somehow I think
that this disc is a kind of tribute to their favorite bands… And taking
into account the fact that I also reckon aforementioned to my favorites,
as well as the fact that these covers strike as rather impressive (especially
“Fast As A Shark” where Toxine sings almost similar to Udo!) – at least,
these is not just some blind copying of one’s favorite tunes; these songs
were replayed with fantasy – featuring brilliant sound (Los Angered Recordings)
and splendid performance, this is the sort of CD I would highly recommend
to you… The only thing I can’t get into goes for the Jensen’s statement
where he claims WITCHERY to be a ‘death / rock’ band! In my view (ears?),
it sounds more like good ‘ol heavy metal (with purely black metallish vokills,
though) played in a modern way… (Herr Stalhammar)
