BLACK METAL AND RELATED STUFF

ABIGOR
"In Memory"
Napalm Records
rating: 1 of 6
Kinda useless release, featuring two (pretty poor) covers (KREATOR's "Terrible Certainty" and SLAYER's "Crionics"), as well as three rough mixes  of tunes all of us are already acquainted with ("Shadowlord", "Crimson Horizons" and "Verwustung"). Therefore; worthless. (Herr Stalhammar)

ADHUR / AIUMEEN BASOA / ILBELTZ
"Triarchy Of Vasconia - Iluntasunaren Itzulera"
War Is Imminent Productions
rating: ADHUR - 5 of 6
        AIUMEEN BASOA - 3,5 of 6
        ILBELTZ - 5,5 of 6
This is one of the first CDs brought forth the light by Spain's War Is Imminent Productions, and I guess I must admit it's doubtlessly not the worst one I've ever had a chance to listen to. Coming in the shape of digipack, this triple split CD features some partly enjoyable yet still partly irritating mixture of folklore, pseudo-gothic efforts with more or less slight touches of black metal. Probably ILBELTZ are the ones to be marked out as the best and most musically stunning act off this offering; these guys offer the stuff which is pretty much the same with both ADHUR and AIUMEEN BASOA, however still pleasantly different due to the fact they've came up with plenty of heavy metal borrowings, and so and so forth. Grandeur is not a problem here as well. Simply listen to "Orreaga", a 17 minutes-long piece. No trace of boredom though. As to ADHUR and AIUMEEN BASOA… Well, the latter didn't really excite me, being quite similar to the earliest works by EVOL, i.e. too much a melting pot. Rather incomprehensible, so to say. ADHUR? Well, these ones offer undoubtedly much more exciting musical canvas, spiced with male baritone and (obviously…) female soprano, as well as quite catchy harmonies. Besides aforesaid; "Triarchy…" comes with a CD-Rom track featuring all the info you need if at least one band off this split-CD impressed your inner sense. At least, this is innovative (what about singing in Basque language, for example?). (Herr Stalhammar)

ALGOL
"Gorgonus Aura"
The Twelfth Planet
rating: 5 of 6
What a disappointment and simultaneously what a surprise. When I discovered this one in my mailbox, I was quite ecstatically intrigued about it's contents, since I thought that Thomas and Norway's ALGOL finally managed to make a comeback. Me fool. "Algol" doesn't have anything to do with "Rossomahaar", when it comes to the moniker's originality. This time it's ALGOL from USA, and surprisingly it's as worthy as their Norwegian namesakes. Rather unorthodox black metal, spiced with plenty of strangely evocative yet enrapturing moves and passages, as well as doubtlessly brilliant (and hellishly long) instrumental piece, "Exodus". Sorry, I'm simply incapable of adding anything comprehensible, since "Gorgonus Aura" is the kind of CD only few are able to describe properly, at least when it comes to musical lines. What I know, this is rea-a-a-a-a-lly far from being a failure. (Herr Stalhammar)

AMORTIS
"Summoned By Astral Fires"
Last Episode Productions
rating: 5 of 6
Wow, it's already 63rd release by Germany's Last Episode! Looks like this label evolves seemingly too fast. Anyway, what we have here is "Summoned By Astral Fires", the CD Austria's AMORTIS have made their debut with. Generally speaking, it appears as undoubtedly impressive piece of black metal, versatile and intriguing enough in order to keep you excited all the way through. There're way too many influences borrowed from various genres to be listed here; moreover, it seems to be pretty useless, since AMORTIS contrived to stay enough original. At least, I would distinguish 'em from the faceless mass of wretched copycats we have to behold (and listen to) these days. Okay, so what's my conclusion? Well, I guess saying "highly recommended" is enough. (Herr Stalhammar)

ANATOMY
"The Witches Of Dathomir"
Bleed Records
rating: 5 of 6
Well, this one's definitely better than "Where Angels Die", the former work by these Down Under's sickos (or whom could they be naming 'emselves as "Hellcunt" and "Hippie Slayer"?!). Anyway, what we have here, is Australian blend of death (less) / black (more) metal coming with enjoyable sound execution, intriguing lyrical canvas, and what's most important, somehow even fascinating sort of music. Fast, ripping yet hellishly intelligent (hmm…) and a bit sludgy, possessing a sound of their own, ANATOMY undoubtedly have something to say. And when it comes to you… well, check out this CD. It's worth it. (Herr Stalhammar)

ANCIENT CEREMONY
"Synagoga Diabolica"
Alister Records
(provided by Irond Records, Russia)
rating: 5 of 6
Germany's ANCIENT CEREMONY never really had a chance to reach any valuable status due to the fact they began their career with as worthless clones of… guess who? Yep, CRADLE OF FILTH. However, "Under The Moonlight We Kiss", the first full-length offering of theirs, appeared as pretty successful effort, being somewhat recognizable and exciting, when it comes to both musical and lyrical canvas. The next one, "Fallen Angel's Symphony" wasn't as intriguing piece, featuring undoubtedly less stunning and less elaborated music as well as nearly horrible passages when it comes to female vocal department. Nevertheless, "Synagoga Diabolica" signifies a certain kind of comeback to the underground community by leaving Cacophonous Records (whilst Alister Records is the label they were formerly signed to; simple as that) and nearly drastical yet still predictable metamorphosis style-wise. None of the tunes off "Synagoga…" is similar to the former works by Chris and co., nor are vocals, neither are drum tracks. Finally, ANCIENT CEREMONY managed to come up with a fairly enjoyable sound execution, as well as no less enjoyable musicianship (especially when it comes to drumming and guitar leads). Stylistically this is some kind of a gothic death metal (surprisingly reminding me of Swedish school at times), slightly spiced with synth lines and female voices put in here and there. I still don't really know whether we should consider "Synagoga Diabolica" a full-length CD, since it's comprised of 11 tracks, three of which are demo recordings (sort of bonus tracks), as well as few short keyboard interludes and METALLICA's "Creeping Death", thus making this album last for only half an hour. Well, I guess there're enough subjects Chris has to be asked about, don't you think so? Therefore; check out the interview with ANCIENT CEREMONY in the next issue.

ASGAROTH
"Absence Spells Beyond"
rating: 4,5 of 6
Finally, the third offering brought forth the light by Spain's ASGAROTH. And… unfortunately far from being as exciting as "Trapped In The Depths Of Eve" was. Even though "Absence Spells Beyond" is utterly soaked with enchanting harmonies, even though it features doubtlessly enrapturing interpretation of KING CRIMSON's "Epitaph", it still doesn't leave much to be remembered once the CD's playing time is over. ASGAROTH still are one of the best gothic black metal hordes Spain has to offer, that's for sure, but "Absence Spells Beyond" isn't their best effort. Sorry, nor label's (although something makes me convinced this MCD was released on their own) neither band's contact address(es) are available. (Herr Stalhammar)

ASTRAY
"Alone"
Beyond… Productions
rating: 5,5 of 6
Whatta surprise. I expected nothing but your regular Donuts Burger clone, however Suomi's ASTRAY managed to deliver sort of breathtaking effort. "Alone" comes with four tunes of so-called "sympho-black metal", composed and performed in a rather unique way, thus representing truly enrapturing musical canvas. I wouldn't say that this MCD appears as somewhat outstanding piece, it's just a perfect example of what all these neophyte CoF and Dimmu followers should sound alike in order to reach anything. When it comes to ASTRAY, they DID reach the status of Finland's premiere sympho-black metal act. (Herr Stalhammar)

AURORA BOREALIS
"Northern Lights"
self-released
rating: 5 of 6
Even though I never review the CDs / tapes which come with NO cover, NO info or whatsoever, I decided to make an exception for this one. Why? Well, simply because I fell in love with band long ago, when they've just released the first MCD of theirs. Here comes already the third work by this duo (?), and it's really hard to say if it's better than "Praise The Archaic Light's Embrace" or not. What I can say for sure; it's much more black metallish in comparison to the former efforts by Ron and co. Unfortunately, it has few drawbacks (even though they're in a lesser quantity), such as pretty average sound execution, as well as the fact all the songs sound quite similar to each other (except the last one, "Distant", appearing as some kind of a weird drum solo). Nevertheless, "Northern Lights" still is a brilliant piece of relentless, harsh yet intelligent death / black metal. At least, I prefer this band over MARDUK. Got the point…? (Herr Stalhammar)

AVATAR
"The Alchemist"
Bestial Records
rating: 4,5 of 6
It is said that Bestial Records appears as the leading record company in Romania, at least amongst the ones dealing with metal and alike music. Well, I don't have any reasons to doubt it, since this is already second doubtlessly worthy effort unleashed by Adrian and co. Unfortunately, "The Alchemist" isn't the second work by Belgium's masters of sympho-black metal; this time it's their Romanian namesakes. And they are no less impressive, at least in terms of music; delivering melodic and atmospheric black metal (yes, still METAL), soaked with somewhat mystical, charmingly elusive sort of ambience. We have one problem here, though. In spite of the fact that "The Alchemist" strikes as an impressive piece, you can't recall what was so special with it, once the album is over. Honestly speaking, I'm not capable of telling you any detailed description of "The Alchemist", simply because it is EPHEMERALLY stunning. Or more likely, momentously. There's something wrong with my perception of this work, so you'd better decide yourselves… Pathetic conclusion, indeed, but I just can't help it. (Herr Stalhammar)

AVRIGUS
"The Secret Kingdom"
Well Of Urd / Hammerheart
rating: 5,5 of 6
You know, some time ago it seemed like Holland's Hammerheart already have signed all the bands I'm familiar with… but no, here's one more of a pack, this time Australia's AVRIGUS. "The Secret Kingdom" is undoubtedly successful followup to it's predecessor, "The Final Wish" MCD (released back in 1998), although we have pretty different (and way more distinguishable) stuff this time. Well Of Urd define this album as "dark atmospheric ambient with metal influences" -  and I guess it's rather fitting description, however I'd dare to add the term "gothic". Romanticized yet a bit anxious, featuring charming female voice (… as well as male one + somewhat sublime choirs… ) and sorrowful, nearly heart-rending ambiences, "The Secret Kingdom" reminds me a bit of the latest works by ATARAXIA, although it's not that classically-oriented and avantgarde. But quite unique, I'd say. This is a music for the long autumn nights… To mourn and laugh… To swirl yourself in a paroxysmal dance of sorrow…  "Solitude And Salvation", "Veritas", "Qliphoth"… actually all of them, make me bitterly laugh and exaltedly cry in the same time once I give 'em yet one more listen… Definitely, a must to have CD. (Herr Stalhammar)

BARATHRUM
"Okkult"
Spinefarm Records
rating: 4,5 of 6
Oops! Seems like they've just released that "Saatana" CD, however here comes a new one. Starting with a bit different approach, more atmospheric and synth-spiced, later it turns into "usual" BARATHRUM's unique style. Well, at least it's not that boring as "Saatana" was. (Herr Stalhammar)

BEHEMOTH
"Thelema.6"
Avantgarde Music
rating: 1 of 6
And now a bitter pill. I've been awaiting this album with an impatience that was greater than ever, and what the hell did I get afterall?? What I'd say for sure: BEHEMOTH are really, really far from conquering the death metal throne. Furthermore, I just can't stand when someone underlines the drummer's genius whilst there're NO LIVE DRUMS, but weakly programmed pathetic drummachine to be discovered. "Unearthly thundermachine Inferno…"?! Well, as far as I know, Alesis' drummodule is quite of earthly origin. And hey man, it's not even Alesis here! Moreover, what about one more slogan: "recorded at Poland's State of the Art "Studio Hendrix" and maniacally shaped in it's smallest detail by the band's mainman Nergal". Well, either Nergal is a bad soungengineer or "Studio Hendrix" is far from being a "state of the art" one. No, the sound doesn't suck or whatever, it's just usual 8-channel studio's way of execution, y'know. Yes, "Thelema.6" is much more various in comparison to BEHEMOTH's previous work, "Satanica", but that doesn't really warm me up. If someone asks me which one do I prefer, "Sventevith" (1995) or "Thelema.6", I'd name the first one. I deeply respect Avantgarde Music for their work, but nevertheless still hope that "Thelema.6" will be the last work by BEHEMOTH. Enough crap. (Herr Stalhammar)

BELPHEGOR
"Necrodaemon Terrorsathan"
Last Episode Productions
rating: 6 of 6
Too bad but "Thelema.6" by BEHEMOTH is an utter crap - however, fortunately we have a (seemingly) worthy substitute in the shape of Austria's BELPHEGOR. These guys are no newcomers in the black metal scene, however (this time, UNfortunately) "Necrodaemon…" (what a title!) is the first CD by BELPHEGOR I've made myself acquainted with. Well, I've already mentioned BEHEMOTH, so I guess you know what to expect from this one? Right, hellish black / death metal performed with the speed of sound (though still precise), however I wouldn't say it's just your regular "hail-me-for-I-made-an-album-which-is-a-killer-but-only-when-it-comes-to-the-first-song-while-others-suck-due-to-the-boredom-they-are-filled-with". "Necrodaemon…" definitely is a well thoughtout and well crafted piece - not "one day for composing, and one more for recording"-kind of stuff, y'know. The only thing still uncertain, is the drumming. At least, somehow I can't believe it's a vital being sitting behind the drumkit. There're only few men able to play THAT fast and THAT technical. By the way, the word "technical" regards everyone's skills when it comes to BELPHEGOR. This is a must to have CD, man! (Herr Stalhammar)

BENIGHTED
"Harbringers Of The Victorium Aeternus"
Arcadia Productions
rating: 5 of 6
GOSPEL OF THE HORNS' "Eve Of The Conqueror" was the CD I've reviewed not so long time ago, and this one definitely IS the CD which made me to recall those Aussie syckos. "Harbringers…" is the worthy piece to make your debut with, y'know. Even though they seemingly didn't crave for utter originality, this MCD turned out as a pretty astounding piece. Being comprised of five tracks (as well as BATHORY's "Satan My Master"), musically "Harbringers…" strikes as quite harsh (and just like in case with ANATOMY - "hellishly intelligent") and pretty well executed, fast-paced black metal with difference. You know, you just can't say they're unoriginal or whatever, once giving this album a listen. Nor would you consider 'em innovative, though. This is just pure black metal at it's best, rather diversified (perhaps due to the variety of vocal lines) and definitely far from being blamed in commercialism and stuff. A good start for the label, a good debut for the band.

BERGTHRON
"Uralte Gedanken"
Perverted Taste Records
rating: 4 of 6
Brand new MCD by Germany's BERGTHRON after three years of silence. Well, what do we have here? If you haven't made a guess about the style, it's pagan (or "forest"? Who cares, anyway) metal. Rather majestic and impressive. I liked their first offering much more, though. (Herr Stalhammar)

BETHLEHEM
"Profane Fetmilch Lenzt Elf Krank"
Prophecy Productions
rating: 4 of 6
Brand new single-CD from Germany's premiere suiciders. By the way, it makes me wonder if they will ever release a full-length followup to "S.U.I.Z.I.D."? Mini-CD back in 1999, and now not even a MCD, but only a couple of tracks lasting for 8 minutes. Not that much to please me. Anyway, musically this effort is a bit disappointing due to the enlargement of pseudo-gothic resemblance, as well as "thinning" the execution. I always preferred darker sides of BETHLEHEM, and unfortunately "Profane…" is not the kind of work I'd reckon to the "darker" ones. Generally speaking, even though it has it's drawbacks, "Profane…" still is a pretty good recording. And afterall, it's only a single-CD… Hope their third full-length will be a worthy followup to "Dark Metal", "Dictius…" and "S.U.I.Z.I.D.". And now let me drown in the silent absoluteness in order to cherish this hope of mine… (Herr Stalhammar)

BLACKSTORM
"As Black As Thy Candles Burn"
Darque Records
rating: 5 of 6
Unbelievable, but BLACKSTORM seems to be a new reincarnation of Czechia's ROOT. At least, when it comes to "clean" vocals, I'd dare to state that they sound similar to the ones by Big Boss. As to music; well, it's well-crafted, a bit dreamy yet hateful form of black metal. Gothic black metal, perhaps? No. Despite the fact it's very melodious, no cheesy stuff here. What the hell, why am I writing all this crap… Get yourself this CD and fucking enjoy. (Herr Stalhammar)

CANAAN
"Brand New Babylon"
Prophecy Productions / Eibon Records
rating: 6 of 6
Very relaxing and incredibly refreshing piece! Being comprised of 14 tracks and lasting for approx. 70 minutes, "Brand New Babylon" doesn't have anything in common with the notion of "boredom". Speaking about musical canvas, it's a bit weird yet undoubtedly fascinating mixture of gothic / dark wave-alike stuff and dark ambient slightly spiced with doomy touch, sometimes making me to recall Norway's OBERON, although of course CANAAN deliver much more exciting kind of music. When it comes to atmospheric aspect, "Brand New Babylon" seems to be almost a pop-album, however don't get frightened because of this word (a word with quite equivocal background). Sometimes "pop" is an equivalent for "brilliance", y'know. Structurally, this CD appears as a very well-crafted work, whilst the ambience this CD is soaked with, simply knocks you down with it's uniqueness. Not shall we forget to mark out Mauro's voice, rather important part of the overall atmosphere. "The shells are stronger. Silence has a meaning. The future is clear. See you in Babylon". (Herr Stalhammar)

CASTRUM
"Hatenourisher"
self-released
rating: 5,5 of 6
Finally, Ukraine's CASTRUM (don't confuse 'em with their Croatian namesakes) managed to come up with a debut CD, needless to say, an excellent one. Being comprised of eight songs (mostly old ones), "Hatenourisher" features a stunning cross between (true) death and black metal at it's best. Actually, this one is more death metal, however shouldn't we reckon this genre to BM movement?? At least, CASTRUM is thousand times more black metal (in the finest sense of this word) than f.ex. Croatia's CASTRUM or all those attempting-to-look-like-a-so-fucking-scary-vampire bands. Don't get me wrong, I deeply respect such bands as CRADLE OF FILTH (music is what we're talking about here… their poser attitude is something NOT to be discussed in this review), nevertheless I prefer "Hatenourisher" over "In The Horizons…" (the second CD by… guess whom? Sure, this band's namesakes). Surprisingly well executed, also being distinguishable, as well as hauntingly atmospheric, "Hatenourisher" represents some truly astounding piece of metal. The old songs sound in a completely different way, whilst what surprised me most of all, are the drum tracks - Doni isn't only a regular drummer, a man to fill the drummer's vacation, he contrived to make his parts no less important than guitar or bass lines. Yeah yeah, I know, you're craving to hear whom I'd compare them to. Ok, here you are: THE CROWN, FOREST OF IMPALED, early AURORA BOREALIS and ANCIENT RITES ("Blasfemia Eternal"). But does it mean that CASTRUM aren't capable of creating enrapturing and above all ORIGINAL music? Well, actually they ARE capable. All in all: this is definitely a brilliant debut.

CASTRUM
"In The Horizons Of The Dying Theatre"
Folter Records
rating: 4 of 6
Croatian answer to CRADLE OF FILTH? Perhaps. At least, sometimes it's really difficult to figure out whether it's a CD by CASTRUM or CoF spinning in your player / stereo. However (and unfortunately) I wouldn't say that these guys are capable of leaving those English bastards far behind. "In The Horizons…" features highly enjoyable and masterly crafted sympho-black metal (even though it's based on guitars (thanks god in hell!), really-really well performed harmonic lines and solos), packed with nearly stunning arrangements and nice sound execution… Stop! Did I say "nice"? Well, probably it's really nice, although it's really far from what I'd like to hear. Kinda "plastic" production, y'know. And those programmed drums have been annoying me quite often while I was giving this CD a listen. All in all, this is a good CD brought forth the light by talented band, but it just doesn't excite me, y'know. (Herr Stalhammar)

CHAINED AND DESPERATE
"Eleven Angles In A Circle"
Hieroglyph Music
rating: 4,5 of 6
Truly a strange name for a black metal band. Well, actually the album's title is no less weird. But hey, what the hell am I talking about… "Eleven Angles In A Circle" appears as a debut work for both the label and the band, and it's undoubtedly rather successful effort. In fact, being almost simple as fuck, "Eleven Angles…" enraptures the listeners with it's fascinating simplicity. One would discover the minimal amount of synth lines, however the ambience this CD is soaked with, gets no less terrific (in the finest sense of this word). CHAINED AND DESPERATE delivers mostly mid-paced structures, although it nearly crawls into the "blasting-the-beats" territory, y'know. I can't really cavil neither at sound execution, nor at musicianship, so… despite the crappy appearance, this CD is worth checking out.

CIRITH GORGOR
"Unveiling The Essence"
Osmose Productions
rating: 3 of 6
Is there anybody out there able to explain me why the hell neither I, nor any of the individuals I'm familiar with, haven't ever heard about these Dutch chaps, if they're signed to Osmose?! Poor promotional campaigns? Not at all. Then why? Ok, let's leave this question unanswered, and move towards the music. Well, to be honest, "Unveiling The Essence" isn't the most stunning piece I've got myself acquainted with lately, at least when it comes to the genre of black metal. Fast-paced, finely executed black metal the way it was done billions time before. I couldn't find any significant detail that could make me to name this band distinguishable. Yes, everything is doubtlessly pro-done, but I still can't figure out why Osmose inked a deal with CIRITH GORGOR, whilst there're plenty of outstanding bands still being unsigned……………… (Herr Stalhammar)

COFFIN TEXTS
"Gods Of Creation, Death And Afterlife"
Dwell Records
rating: 5,5 of 6
This one appears as quite an unknown band, although it's undoubtedly worth checking out. Featuring unique, semi-whispering / semi-growling alike vokills, a bit of monotony, typical DEICIDE-alike leads, being mostly mid-paced and sometimes even a bit sludgy (UNlike INCANTATION, though), this is what COFFIN TEXTS are all about. Few keyboard lines are added here and there (whilst "The Grand Gallery" is a solely synth-based tune… kinda interlude, y'know), perhaps in order to diversify the CD a bit. Besides afore-said, I guess I have to admit that besides compositions of their own, COFFIN TEXTS also came up with covering SLAYER and BLACK SABBATH (whose "Disturbing The Priest" strikes as undoubtedly stunning, almost a unique interpretation!!… and don't ask me why) - and they definitely succeeded in this venture. In short; if you're craving to give a listen to something fresh and innovative, particularly an astounding mixture of death and black metal, this one should be yours.

CORVUS CORAX
"The Atavistic Triad"
Dark Symphonies Records
rating: 3 of 6
Unfortunately, this time it's CORVUS CORAX from US. Why "unfortunately"? Well, those German guys manage to come up with much more exciting kind of art. I wouldn't say that the band whose debut (?) CD I'm reviewing at the moment, lacks originality or whatever. No, "The Atavistic Triad" is pretty intriguing piece of so-called epic black metal, however it's not the one which could be stuck in my mind at least for a while. In fact, there're no visual drawbacks - this CD is pretty well executed and splendidly performed; the arrangements are fine too. However "The Atavistic Triad" doesn't possess anything, the notion of "specialty" could be possibly regarded to. Too bad, because these guys undoubtedly had a chance to come up with incredibly much more impressive work. (Herr Stalhammar)

CRADLE OF FILTH
"Midian"
Music For Nations
rating: 6 of 6
The name "King Diamond" stroke my mind at once when I was listening to the first couple of tunes off this CD. Speaking plainer, "Midian" is not as majestic as former works by CRADLE OF FILTH, although of course the sublime parts haven't all gone into oblivion. "Midian" captures somewhat mysterious ambience, perturbing yet bewitching. And yes, fortunately this time Dani and co. made emphasis on guitars, therefore a huge "thank you" goes out to them (more guitar leads next time!). All in all, I consider this album a huge improvement; at least, it's better than "Cruelty And The Beast" and MUCH better than "Dusk And Her Embrace". There's no other band like CRADLE OF FILTH, there's no other troupe capable of forcing such a unique atmosphere, there's no other act transforming thoughts of theirs into music that brilliantly. And all these accusations in "selling out" and stuff… well… what the fuck, "Midian" is tremendous piece of black metal, so I could care less about any kind of rumors. And lastly: if you get high on "Conspiracy" LP as much as I do, you'll fall in (wicked) love with "Midian". (Herr Stalhammar)

DAMMERCIDE
"Link"
Negatrond Records
rating: 6 of 6
Yes, definitely a link to everything that is controversial and innovative, everything that is worth attention of every single soul dwelling in and out there. Don't know what about the lyrical canvas, however when it comes to music, DAMMERCIDE appear as one of the most exciting acts among the Italy's neophytes. Loosely comparable to AT THE GATES, "Link" features diverse and highly impressive mixture of death and black metal, coming with wide variety of vocal lines (needless to say, I like both, screaming and "clean" voices, a lot), astounding musicianship (guitars and drumming are beyond any critics) as well as excellent sound execution AND originality. "Crimson Sping" is my favorite off "Link" - give it a listen and you'll understand why I'm so enthusiastic about this band. What the hell, what else do you need?! This is A MUST.

DAWNBRINGER
"Catharsis Instinct"
Icarus Music
rating: 3,5 of 6
Want me to be utterly honest? Ok, then I hate this CD. At least, I hated it when "Catharsis Instinct" was spinning in my stereo for the first time. I gave it a second chance… and a third one… And well, now, even if I don't consider it a masterpiece, this album gives me good vibes anyway. Musically it's heavy metal-rooted stuff (a bit similar to Mexico's AGONY LORDS, though better), slightly spiced with blackish and thrashy elements. In fact, "Catharsis Instinct" would be an excellent piece if: a) vocals didn't suck (I just can't stand this pseudo-whispering, seems like someone's attempted to strangle this guy while he was singing… or he just had too much COLD beer before the recording) and b) the lack of versatility. Melodiously, this CD definitely is a good one, and yes, all these harmonies and leads are great as well, however… it's just a bit dull anyway. Nevertheless, check out "All Hell Broke Loose", "What Are You Running From?" and the album's highlights in the shape of "Beggars And Children", "Cosmos Disease" and an instrumental piece named "DNA". Worthy. (Herr Stalhammar)

DAWN OF DREAMS
"Darklight Awakening"
Last Episode Productions
rating: 3 of 6
No. I know what you think of, and that's why I say "no". It's DAWN OF DREAMS, ok, but the one from Germany. Got the point, eh? Musically, it's different as well. "Darklight Awakening" strikes as some kind of "crossover" CD, y'know. Kinda rare thing nowadays. Anyway, moving closer to the subject. This quartet managed to amalgamate black, death and doom metal - combine these styles the way only Germans are capable of. Both musicianship and sound execution are beyond any critics, but unfortunately "Darklight Awakening" is not the sort of CD I get high on. What's my problem? Well, I guess I just don't really like exactly this kind of mixture. However, who knows, maybe it fits YOUR taste?? (Herr Stalhammar)

DEFENDER KFS
"The Command"
self-released
rating: 5 of 6
Ok, firstly I considered these guys to be of Australian origin, however I doubt if an act named "Defender KFS" would ever emerge from the Down Under. So let's better concentrate our attention on this one, coming from Austria. In fact, I don't know that much concerning the Austrian metal scene, and when it comes to black metal, there're only few bands I'm acquainted with (such as BELPHEGOR, for instance). Actually, this is sort of pleasant acquaintance. I mean, the one I've just had, putting "The Command" into my CD player. Reminding a bit of USA's DAWNBRINGER (especially when it comes to vocals… it seems like, these two bands have one and only drawback - vocal lines), it still sounds different, at least if we'd compare 'em to the greatest multitude of neophyte death / black / doom / gothic / heavy / power / speed / industrial / core metal bands out there. Based on incredibly well crafted and adjusted harmonies and melodic structures, supplemented with semi-grunts / semi-whisperings / semi-black metallish vokills (as I already said, the worst this CD has to offer… not as disgusting as in case with DAWNBRINGER, though) and plenty of leads, as well as thick and enjoyable sound execution, it strikes as "The Command" would be a worthy addition to your collection, standing somewhere between blackened heavy / death metal. This is seemingly satanic stuff, by the way, if we'd refer to the lyrical canvas. RECOMMENDED.

"Eventide Of The Orb And Heavens"
X-Rated Records, Inc.
rating: 4 of 6
"Epic dark metal loosely comparable to IN FLAMES, but darker and more original". Hmm, I wouldn't say so. First of all, does anyone of you out there really think it's possible to be MORE original than IN FLAMES?! I beg your pardon, but IN FLAMES were one of the inventors of that "Swedish school" death / black metal, therefore… Well, so what about "darker"? Perhaps. Anyway, let me get rid of any comparisons and quoting promotional sheets. Bulgaria's DESOLATE deliver pretty technical, somewhat even innovative, atmospheric, nearly stunning mixture of melodic death and black metal ("dark metal", you see), although I wouldn't ever assert that I get high on it. Vocals are that of AT THE GATES, whilst musical accompaniment doesn't possess any visible drawbacks, however… "However" what?? Dunno. DESOLATE isn't the kind of band I'd gladly arrange an interview with, y'know. "Eventide…" IS the kind of "highly (?) recommended" CD, though. (Herr Stalhammar)

DETONATION
"Lost Euphoria"
Skull Crusher Records
rating: 4 of 6
Do you know what I mean when I say this one is a "revolutionary" work? I believe, you do. So now, listen here: "Lost Euphoria" is NOT. Netherlands as the country of origin, and Sweden as the country they belong to, musically. "Lost Euphoria" is comprised of four tracks of melodic blend of black and death metal, rather trivial and uninteresting - with an only but truly outstanding exception, the "Reflection Of A Torn Spirit" epic. This tune was the only reason I rated this MCD with '4' out of '6'. No, these guys aren't cloning any particular band, they just have to work hardly to reach what we usually name "personality". Hey, you're talented enough to come up with what I probably would consider "outstanding"! Just stop being a synonym for "banality", ok? And yes, change the moniker. It simply doesn't fit the kind of music you play, besides being obviously ridiculous.

DEVOLUTION
"Self-Made Monster"
Wickedisc Records
rating: 2 of 6
Seven tracks of sincere delirium. No other description would fit better, I assume. Mykill Mayhem (the one behind DEVOLUTION) definitely is a man of unsound mind, otherwise he wouldn't come up with such an effort. DEVOLUTION delivers pretty weird and bizarre kind of stuff, sort of a cross between dark goth and industrial, somberly spiced with black metal ambiences. Vocals, as well as music in the whole, is / are rather versatile, however this is not the kind of versatility I appreciate. Definitely interesting and innovative effort… but far from being the one I'd love to have in my collection. (Herr Stalhammar)

DIE APOKALYPTISCHEN REITER
"All You Need Is Love"
Hammerheart Records
rating: 2 of 6
… and for the third time we're enshrouded in a unique (yet starting to get annoying) mixture of death, black and heavy metal, this time also spiced with few folkish borrowings. Well, seems like Hammerheart Records already signed all the bands we formerly reckoned to the genres of black, death, doom, thrash, heavy metal and dark ambient / neo-classical sort of stuff. What next? Signing all the HC acts out there?! I'm starting to get tired of seeing more and more of the bands I'm acquainted with, inking a deal with these Dutch psychopaths (or how else should I name 'em?!). Nevertheless, when it comes to "All You Need Is Love", it strikes as exploiting the same theme during more than three years isn't that exciting on the outcome. Of course, I was stunned giving the CD they've made their debut with, a listen, so was I, giving a listen to their second work… and now it's enough. We already have MOTORHEAD, so why do we have to tolerate yet one more act whose moniker is no less than a synonym for the notion of "spiritual stagnation"? (Herr Stalhammar)

DIES ATER
"Through Weird Woods"
Last Episode Productions
rating: 5,5 of 6
This is one of the best CDs recently released by Last Episode, that's for sure. I don't really understand Legion mag's reviewers who gave this album '4' out of '10' without any kind of argumentation. Nevertheless, Vae Solis is what we have here, as well as a tremendous CD (despite the opinion of all those who most possibly can't distinguish "music" from MUSIC). Honestly speaking, I can't tell you anything in regards to the lyrical canvas, however when it comes to music… Well, it's INCREDIBLY well crafted mixture of harsh and melodious black metal, varying from breathtaking interludes and astounding leads to rawness of what may be defined as a "portraying of purest hatred through various musical tools". Diverse and exciting, atmospheric and distinguishable… ah… seems like those somewhat ridiculous song titles in English ("Scorned Heroine", "Infested Night", "Through Weird Woods") is the only thing I could ever possibly cavil at, when it comes to this CD. (Herr Stalhammar)

DOMINION CALIGULA
"A New Era Rises"
No Fashion Records
rating: 6 of 6
What a jewel! Seems like DARK FUNERAL-guys are capable of producing undoubtedly stupendous effort which doesn't have anything to do with that "Swedish black metal" trademark. "Diverse", "bewitching", "enigmatic" and "innovative" are only few words one would use humbly describing this CD. Sublime yet harsh ("harsh" in the finest sense of this word, of course), varying from violent black to modern-day thrash metal (no fucking retro-thrash crap here; remember that!), featuring a wide diversity of vocals as well as magnificent harmonies, also being well thoughtout structurally, "Dominion Caligula" appears as "a must to have" CD. KING DIAMOND is the only comparison that entered my mind once I was listening to "Dominion…", however don't you expect any visible parallels, nor falsetto-alike singing. And lastly, let me dare to state that you haven't heard anything like that before. (Herr Stalhammar)

DORNENREICH
"Her Von Welken Nachten"
Prophecy Productions
rating: -
Incredibly versatile and controversial, this is definitely a goddamn weird CD, coming with completely depraved vokills (similar to the voice of the witch, as we know her from Hollywood movies), kinda whisperings of a wicked kind, "broken" structures, sudden dialogue-alike interludes, as well as no less weird viola and synthetics' parts. Avantgardistic black metal is what it is, easily comparable to the earliest works by BETHLEHEM (excluding performance's technique, speed and few more factors, of course). This is a perfect example of what will we get, equaling genius and insanity. As a matter of fact, "Her Von Welken Nachten" more likely reminds of a certain kind of bizarre theatrical play, set on a musical canvas. Sometimes VERY dark, sometimes completely insane yet nearly genius, with a singer whose voice is similar to the hysterically yet blissfully delightful weeping, "Her Von Welken Nachten" undoubtedly is "one of a kind" sort of stuff. A unique band, indeed! (Herr Stalhammar)

DRASTIC
"Thieves Of Kisses"
Beyond… Productions
rating: 6 of 6
Wow… This CD left me nearly speechless. I can't properly define 'em stylistically even now, after giving "Thieves…" 10th or 11th listen, you see. Most probably, this CD is the most controversial and enrapturing piece Italy's Beyond… Productions managed to unleashed thus far. Space-metal? Perhaps. It doesn't have anything in common with BENIGHTED LEAMS or THE KOVENANT, though. Based on depraved yet so charming rhythmical structures, masterly crafted and executed, supplemented with two female singers (as well as sometimes harshly whispering, and sometimes bewitchingly screaming voice (as well as recitatives)), and nearly (?) unique synth lines, Mr. Buchmann contrives to come up with a kind of recording which doesn't follow any limitations, cliches, a kind of recording which is far from being creatively imprisoned within any schemes or borders, a kind of recording which is definitely incomparable to anything and anyone else. This is a pure artistic masterpiece. (Herr Stalhammar)

DRAUTRAN
"Unter Dem Banner Der Nordwinde"
self-released
rating: 6 of 6
Of course the assertion I'm going to make could be immediately doubted, but somehow it seems like I haven't heard anything like that for ages. DRAUTRAN comes… guess, where from? Right, Germany. Try to make one more guess, ok? I mean, what are they up to, stylistically? Once again, I have to apologize for doubting your knowledge in this area - yes, this is pagan black metal. Incredibly sincere, harsh though surprisingly well structured and thoughtout. "Unter Dem Banner Der Nordwinde" makes me recall me those times when those acts we now reckon to this genre, were few in number, and all of them managed to offer nearly unique musical canvas; those times when all of us adored ENSLAVED's "Hordanes Land" and EINHERJER's "Aurora Borealis"; those times when there were no pathetic copycats cloning BURZUM or whoever else, considering 'emselves the diehard advocates of heathendom, basically having nothing in common with this notion, thus appearing as unmasked liars with no honor and modesty left. This is why I was so excited when this CD literally entered both my stereo and my mind. In fact, Blutaar (the singer) told me it's only a demo work of theirs, however let me place this review in the "black metal" section anyway, due to the fact it's in all terms executed as astounding that I'm simply incapable of considering it a demo or whatever alike. And yes, lastly there should be said, "Unter Dem Banner Der Nordwinde" definitely IS a DISTINGUISHABLE effort. Let us just wish these individuals all the best in what they're doing and finish this review, ok?

EMINENZ
"The Blackest Dimension"
Last Episode Productions
rating: 4 of 6
Ok, one more good piece from Germany's Last Episode. If I'm not mistaken, "The Blackest Dimension" is already the fourth offering from EMINENZ… and no, I wouldn't say this is their best one. I still prefer "The Heretic". These guys seemed to get rid of that inimitable sound they once possessed, therefore both latest works by EMINENZ do not differ a lot from the common mass of contemporary black metal efforts. Mid-paced and atmospheric, this time fortunately well executed, "The Blackest Dimension" is a good CD. It just doesn't have anything in common with a notion of "specialty". Anyway, if you don't care about originality too much, try this one. You will like it. (Herr Stalhammar)

ENSLAVED
"Mardraum - Beyond The Within"
Osmose Productions
rating: 0 of 6
I guess the album's title is the only thing worth attention when it comes to "Mardraum". Chaotic, incomprehensible, lacking any kind of ambience and atmosphere… yuck! It sucks. "Hordanes Land" still is the only CD by ENSLAVED I absolutely adore. (Herr Stalhammar)

EVOKEN
"Quietus"
Avantgarde Music
rating: 6 of 6
What?? It strikes as Roberto contrived to find a substitute for UNHOLY? No, never. UNHOLY is UNHOLY, EVOKEN is EVOKEN. This five-piece comes with the music of their own, and that shouldn't be argued. Similar to ESOTERIC? Well, then what about comparing EMPEROR to DARKTHRONE? Makes no sense? Yes, no doubts. However, why should we compare "Quietus" to anyone / anything else, if it's more than just a splendid work, but an album of full value - and that DOES NOT concern it's running time or whatever. Slow and gloomy, anxious yet somberly peaceful, DARKEST metal, all based on contradictions, perhaps unseen at the first sight (or listen), but still clearly obvious. Contradictionally perfect, so to say. This is not a music for those weak in spirit, if only these ones are craving for deliverance. Once and forever. Just make the last step and you'll enter what we still aren't capable of naming. (Herr Stalhammar)

FAERGHAIL
"Blood Will Follow Blood"
Northern Sound Records
rating: 6 of 6
This one's definitely a killer! I didn't really get high on the CD they've made their debut with, "Horizon's Fall", however let me admit that I simply fell in love with this one. These guys didn't just elaborate, but perfected the sound of theirs, delivering basically the same doomy mid-paced black metal, with emphasized rhythm guitar lines and BARATHRUM-alike way of singing, but it seems like this time they've put in a certain kind of magick, since all the tracks off "Blood Will Follow Blood" are no less than amazingly tremendous. Easily comparable to early KATATONIA and Norway's FORLORN (the early years), this trio contrives to stay undoubtedly distinguishable, and what's more, original. Despite that Northern Sound is a pretty young label, it looks like they have a bright future ahead, if they'd sign the bands of the same caliber as FAERGHAIL (at least, "Blood Will Follow Blood" easily beats the latest works by their countrymates, such as CHILDREN OF BODOM, ASTRAY, ALGHAZANTH, CATAMENIA, THROES OF DAWN and THYRANE). In conclusion, let me just FUCKING SHOUT: "This is a fucking must to have CD, the one featuring unbelievably tight and astounding guitar work".

FINNTROLL
"Jaktens Tid"
Spinefarm Records
(provided by Fono Records)
rating: 6 of 6
Do you know what is "humppa"? Or more likely, "humppa black metal"? I don't. Nevertheless, it didn't really bother me whilst I was getting myself acquainted with this, already second, effort Finland's FINNTROLL came up with. Unfortunately, I haven't heard "Midnattens Widunder", the CD they made their debut with (should have get a chance to listen to it soon, though), but if that one was a milestone (as it was told me by perhaps even TOO many people involved in the black metal scene), "Jaktens Tid" is… well, I don't really know what the hell should I consider it to be, especially in comparison to "Midnattens…". This one simply is a killer work, definitely a synonym for the word "incomparable". A mixture of trollish black metal and accordion, almost cheerful harmonies, and grimmest ambiences… A contradiction? Not at all. "Simply" an outstanding approach to music, and "simply" an outstanding band. Here we have Finns proving to be the premieres in Europe's black metal for yet one more time… In fact, "Jaktens Tid" doubtlessly would become an album of the issue if DREAMSFEAR's "Prelude To Destiny" haven't gained this title already…
If you can't find this CD being sold at the music store nearby but nevertheless still interested in purchasing it, email Fono Records at <metal@fono.ru> or check out their official website at <www.fono.ru> (this concerns only those who reside in Russia and CIS States, though).

FOREFATHER
"The Fighting Man"
Angelisc Enterprises
rating: 6 of 6
FOREFATHER's previous effort, the "Deep Into Time" CD, already appeared as a worthy and distinguishable piece of "war-alike" black metal (sorry, can't find a better description) - and obviously I was highly excited when these guys said they're going to send me a newest work of theirs. Well, was I disappointed? Definitely not! If "Deep Into Time" was great, this one's outstanding. No doubts that there're no more than two or three worthless black metal acts in England, and it seems like FOREFATHER is yet one example proving that. You see, it's almost amazing to see more and more unique bands emerging from UK (CRADLE OF FILTH, BAL SAGOTH, AKERCOCKE, THUS DEFILED, REIGN OF EREBUS, FOREFATHER…), whilst, as far as I may recall, I haven't heard anything disgusting ever made by an English BM act. Nevertheless, let's get back to "The Fighting Man". It's way more elaborated in comparison to "Deep Into Time", also being much more original… well, actually, originality is one of the strongest aspects offered by this work. Musically, it's structurally perfect, fascinating piece of pseudo-Norse sounding BM with difference - for instance, "The Paths Of Yesterdays" sounds exactly like if THIN LIZZY played black metal. And what about tremendous "When Our England Died", sorrowful yet sublime tune set to the traditional basis music-wise? Generally speaking, if you're craving for something refreshing, atmospheric but simultaneously no less harsh than it should be, this is for you. As well as for all those who keep on asserting utterly reasonless crap, such as "black metal genre has already exhausted itself". Give this CD a listen and you'll see how inexcusably wrong you are. (Herr Stalhammar)

FURVUS
"Deflorescens Iam Robur"
Beyond… Productions
rating: 2 of 6
In comparison to that outstanding "Thieves Of Kisses" CD by DRASTIC, this one's pretty worthless. Led by Mr."A-man-of-thousand-projects" Luigi Mennella, FURVUS delivers quite anonymous mixture of dark ambient, neo-classical and baroque music, undoubtedly far from being enigmatic or, once again, outstanding. Usual sort of stuff, a bit similar to early works by PAZUZU. Not really convincing, nor memorable. And as there're billions of alike acts when it comes to the contemporary scene, I doubt if FURVUS would gain anything by bringing this CD forth the light. (Herr Stalhammar)

GEHENNA
"Murder"
Moonfog Productions
rating: 5,5 of 6
Congratulations. THYRFING now play viking heavy metal, and GEHENNA is no more black metal, but death / grind. Is such a metamorphosis for better? Definitely. Just check out "Perfect Hate" and "To The Grave", they won't leave you cold. These guys managed to compile a very intensive and simultaneously diversified CD, which maybe doesn't reach the genius of MORBID ANGEL or VADER, but it's not really far from such a status. A MUST. (Herr Stalhammar)

GODKILLER
"Deliverance"
Wounded Love Records
rating: 5 of 6
Fortunately, this one didn't disappoint me the way BEHEMOTH's "Thelema.6" did. Fantastically designed, this CD appears as a logical evolution and followup to "The End Of The World". Sometimes it's a bit more (and sometimes a bit less) industrialized, however I don't consider it a drawback. What is a drawback for me when it comes to "Deliverance", is that "shouting"-alike voice. Honestly speaking, I preferred those black metal shrieks which are now unfortunately gone. Musically "Deliverance" is not as various as "The End Of The World", although it's simultaneously way more elaborated structurally. And what's most weird, there're no lyrics or whatsoever: only cites taken from the "holy bible"… (Herr Stalhammar)

GORGON
"The Spectral Voices"
self-released
rating: 5 of 6
Hey guys, are you kidding?? The fourth album to date, and still unsigned? France's GORGON definitely do NOT deserve such an injustice. But anyway, it's not my business if they will ever get a deal or not (actually, it seems like they feel pretty comfortable being independent for all these years), consequently let's better talk about the newest offering of theirs for a while. "The Spectral Voices" is 666% times less black metal in comparison to "The Reign Of Obscenity", more likely it's a weird although still so bewitching cross between oi (!) and death metal, a bit similar to HONOR, OCCULT and BERSERKR, despite the fact I still consider 'em to be the ones reckoned to the black metal horde. This one appears as quite versatile piece, and I guess anyone into the genres I've just mentioned, will find something perfectly suiting him here. And yeah, this is GORGON - and no one other. I wouldn't ever state that "The Spectral Voices" is the sort of offering destined to become legendary with time, or whatever… But while now, it's doubtlessly a (nearly) excellent work. Moreover, a work of THEIR OWN. As I already said, GORGON is GORGON. At least, I prefer these oldies over loathsome newcomers, such as motherfuckers from SETH or ANAON. Time will show who's true and who's not, anyway.

GOVANON
"Ancient Order Of Cuthulu Serpent"
Blasphemy Productions
rating: 3,5 of 6
Brazil. Black metal. So what would you expect? South-American way of doing things, an inimitable aura of grimness, an outstanding approach to composition; what else? Actually, it doesn't work out with GOVANON. Despite the tremendous packaging and enjoyable sound execution, this piece of traditional black metal (yep, black metal as it is, nothing more, nothing less) doesn't warm me up. Nor does it appear as a repulsive piece to me, though. Just a good work, the one which doesn't cross the usual schemes and bounds of this genre. In fact, there's nothing I'd really name a drawback, but it's still the sort of CD I won't give a listen to, in the nearest time… (Herr Stalhammar)

GRAVEWORM
"Scourge Of Malice"
Serenades Records
rating: 6 of 6
Looks like all the works by Italy's GRAVEWORM are destined to become classics some day. At least, this one's definitely should be reckoned to the elite of so-called "gothic black metal". I confess, I didn't really like their former work, "As The Angels…", perhaps due to the fact I expected it to be even more tremendous than "Underneath The Crescent Moon" MCD. Nevertheless, this is AS tremendous. Coming with ten tracks of brilliantly executed BM (however, I doubt if most of you out there would consider it black metal. Fuck you then. It IS black metal, maybe just a bit different to be reckoned to a particular style), GRAVEWORM managed to force inimitable ambiences, which definitely work good with that "Dolby-surround"-alike sound. There're at least three or four tracks which penetrated into my very essence, in order to stay and torture me from inside with their hauntingly tremendous beauty, such as "Unhallowed By The Infernal One", "Threnody", "Sanctity Within Darkness" and of course a stunning interpretation of IRON MAIDEN's classic, "Fear Of The Dark". Generally speaking, GRAVEWORM preferred to embark on a path of versatility instead of following the trend (even though I'm familiar with lotsa individuals considering GRAVEWORM nothing but a pile of commercial crap). And that's the way I like it. A must to have. (Herr Stalhammar)

HADES ALMIGHTY
"Millenium Nocturne"
Hammerheart Records
rating: 6 of 6
"The Pulse Of Decay"
Raising Hell Management
rating: 5 of 6
Finally, the package with the HADES ALMIGHTY's two latest offerings reached my mailbox. Whew… Well, let's start with the work dating back to the year of '99, i.e. "Millenium Nocturne". Have you ever heard any CDs by HADES (they were forced to change the moniker to "Hades Almighty" few years ago due to various circumstances)? For example, "Again Shall Be"? I didn't like that one. Almost hated it, actually. Everybody was praising that piece, whilst I couldn't really understand why the hell are these morons think it's a masterpiece? To me, it was (and still is) a boring piece of so-called "viking metal" (or "forest metal" or whatsoever). Their next work, "The Dawn Of The Dying Sun", was thousand times better - at least, what would you think of, if I've told you that I spent 15 bucks buying it? Exactly, I liked that one. Slowdowned, majestic and somewhat sludgy epic black metal borrowing all the best Quorthon and BATHORY ever invented, adding a blend of their own. This is what "The Dawn…" was all about. Actually, it's almost the same with "Millenium Nocturne". Now on Hammerheart (formerly they were signed to Fullmoon Productions… no less a rip-off label, indeed), it's incredibly well-crafted, atmospherically enigmatic work based on uniquely monotonous harmonic basis, featuring unforgettable melodic lines and ambiences, simultaneously (almost) lacking any synth passages. Just listen to the 10 minutes epic "Nighttime Endurance", "Gardens Of Chaos" or "Carnival Blaspheme"! Vocals also appear of unique kind, a mixture of harsh screaming and howling-alike "clean" singing… All in all, a hell of an album. Now off to "The Pulse Of Decay", their newest offering. Unfortunately, it's a bit worse, perhaps due to the fact they've changed their style a bit, moving towards more simplified, heavy metal-based structures and lack of sublimity. No "viking"-chants, no more majestic ambiences, but still HADES ALMIGHTY, with their inimitable approach to music. Actually, I think such a metamorphosis was a necessity; even if you succeed to capture unique Norse atmosphere twice, it doesn't necessarily mean that you'll succeed for the third time. Moreover, you can't play all the same kind of stuff for ages, can you? In fact, it's no less exciting than "Millenium Nocturne", but here comes one and only, but undoubtedly rather serious, drawback: if all the songs off "Millenium…" keep on playing in your mind centuries after you gave that CD a listen, everything's different with "The Pulse Of Decay". It's an excellent album, featuring excellent blend of black metal the Norse way (in the finest sense of this word), surprisingly innovative, but… a bit unmemorable. Nevertheless, I guess you'll definitely have to check out both CDs. That's for sure. (Herr Stalhammar)

HIMINBJORG
"Third"
Red Stream Records
rating: 6 of 6
"Third"… Hmm, how cute we are… Yes, this is the third offering these French vikings have managed to come up with, so perhaps "Third" isn't the worst way to entitle the CD, huh? By the way, this is also a perfect example proving that this world definitely is capable of granting us a possibility to behold miracles, at least once in a lifetime. I've already beheld mine: this CD came almost utterly broken on arrival, however I was (and still is) able to give a listen to all the six tunes off this piece! But ok, off to musical canvas (since I can't tell you anything in regards to the lyrical one due to the fact "Third" doesn't have lyrics printed… unfortunately). Starting with "The Fading Whispers", almost a 10-minute piece, it enraptures the listener with a unique sort of atmosphere forced in no less unique way. Later it develops into more traditional yet still inimitable black metal way of doing things, though… perhaps, in order to astound you with few more recognizably crafted compositions. I'm really sorry, but musically this work is almost indescribable, therefore let me just add yet one more cliche: "A MUST". (Herr Stalhammar)

HONOR / GRAVELAND
"Raiders Of Revenge"
Resistance Records
rating: 6 of 6
Don't know what about HONOR, but what is going by the name GRAVELAND already should give you a hint of what we'll have to face here. NS black metal at it's best, although this sort of definition doesn't really fit the four songs HONOR came up with. More likely, it's a certain mixture of oi and black metal, reminding me a bit of BERSERKR, nonetheless it's still gets my blood boiling. And what's really different with this band, is the fact they (seemingly) sing in… Russian (being of Polish origin), whilst the lyrics printed appear as the ones in English. Weird, isn't it? I guess it's kinda needless to discuss their lyrical canvas, since it's pretty obvious what it's all about. Ok, then we have GRAVELAND with three tracks of furious yet enchantingly sublime black metal, this time (in comparison to their latest work, "Immortal Pride" CD (out on No Colours)) less majestic; this is rather a straightforward piece, y'know. All the three compositions last for eternity, however what is unique with Herr Darken, is the fact they don't have anything to do with "boredom" or alike notions. And of course, should I say that GRAVELAND possess it's own, doubtlessly distinguishable sound, as well as nearly unique vokills. Perhaps, "Raiders Of Revenge" is the best split CD I've got myself acquainted lately. BRILLIANT.

HORDE OF WORMS
"Wormageddon"
Bloodbucket Productions
rating: 3,5 of 6
"Immortal Coil", "Wormageddon", "Under Blood Red Skies", "Dead (V.2000)"… These is the way the songs off this single-CD are entitled. Don't know what about lyrics, though. As to music… Well, this offering disappointed me a bit. Fast-paced, almost grinding mixture of black and death metal with let-me-reap-my-own-bowels-out kind of vocals and programmed (finely programmed, I must admit) drumset. Nothing really special, just another piece of black / death metal, you see. I prefer their former work, "Dreams And Dying Eyes" CD. (Herr Stalhammar)

IBLIS
"Axiom"
Negatron Records
rating: 4 of 6
"Axiom" was the first CD put out by Negatron Records, and undoubtedly a successful one. Coming in the shape of digipack and featuring ANCIENT's bass player among others, "Axiom" is… guess what? Yep exactly, it's black metal. Melodic and atmospheric, although far from being either epic or sublime. What I like most when it comes to "Axiom", are those piano / violin interludes which somehow made me to think of IBLIS as of atonal works of art' advocates. These pieces are astounding ones, anyway. All in all, "Axiom" is a pretty exciting CD, although I wish they added more ambience, more passion to the works of theirs. Furthermore, strange but it seems like "Axiom" is more techno-death metal effort than black metal one.

ICONOCLASM
"Preamble To Precipitate The Destruction Of Religious Artefacts"
self-released
rating: 4,5 of 6
Ok, Steve (guitars / vocals) sent me the newest effort ("Marching Evil…") together with the MCD they've made their debut with. Well… I guess, those, looking for non-standard black metal with 100% originality shouldn't pay attention to these Belgium's act, however those who appreciate supreme bestiality and extremely weird atmosphere definitely have to give "Preamble..." a listen. Unfortunately, it's only a mini-CD (surprisingly released on their own) consisting of six rather lengthy pieces, which, however, only makes me craving for more! ICONOCLASM managed to create undoubtedly impressive and somber, perturbing music without using keyboards or any unorthodox instruments. So the conclusion is rather simple - if you're looking for absolutely dark and undoubtedly sincere black metal CD, excellently performed and finely execited - it's your stuff. And ah, I just love the coverart! (Herr Stalhammar)

ICONOCLASM
"Marching Evil…"
Horned Productions / Soulreaper Records
rating: 5 of 6
Finally! This CD's release date has been delayed for almost a year due to the various circumstances, however we're able to hellishly rejoice at last. This is mostly fast-paced though still enough diversified work, a bit similar to the latest efforts by ANCIENT RITES, ENTHRONED, UNLORD and THY PRIMORDIAL, not really original, but who cares if the Hell is here?!! "Marching Evil…" comes with a truly devilish atmosphere, also delivering pretty versatile musical canvas, at least judging by "Land Of The Brave" (this one even features haunting female voice in the background) as well as "A Dark Elf's Tale" (mid-paced, featuring few acoustic disseminations). This is what you guys often reckon to the "true black metal" - and this time it's definitely true black metal in the finest sense of these words.

IMPALED NAZARENE
"Nihil"
Osmose Productions
rating: 1 of 6
This is a disaster. "How low can you go with your dreams of unsound mind", Mika? Once I've already said that you're no creator, but a musical impotent, and here comes one more proof to these words of mine. "Nihil" would be better named with "Nothing". "Nada". "Nichto". Absolute worthlessness. Well recorded and finely performed, it's simultaneously boring to death. "Nihil" just lacks any sort of bewitchment, you see. And no, those leads by Alexi Laiho definitely do NOT fit this "music". It strikes as Osmose keep on releasing more and more crappy stuff. Don't buy! (Herr Stalhammar)

"Speed-Metal Cult"
Moon Soon Records
rating: 2 of 6
I never really liked IMPERIAL, whilst "Malmort" (the former work of theirs) just made me sick - and I guess, I'm not the only one. No surprise that Osmose got rid of this duo. Anyway, "Speed-Metal Cult" is their third offering, and it's a bit better than both former efforts. The sound is pretty weak, but who cares about this aspect when it comes to such a noisy, insanely fast-paced, clanging shape of black / thrash / speed / whatthefuckisit metal?! Buzzing guitars (more similar to the sound of the chainsaw… the old, rusty chainsaw, you see), the singer who seems to vomit his own shit through all the holes his body has, almost non-existent bass lines and seemingly programmed drumset - that's IMPERIAL. Those who get high on INFERNO (Norway), (late) AURA NOIR and alike, will love it. Those who prefer more "musical" kind of "music" (sorry for the pun) will simply ignore it.

INFERNAL DREAMS
"And I Dream…"
Guardians Of Metal
rating: 5,5 of 6
Guardians Of Metal always succeeded in releasing stunning CDs, while INFERNAL DREAMS definitely appears as one of the best acts ever going under the banners of this Portuguese record company. They're a bit similar to IN DARKNESS (besides coming from the same country and being signed to the same label), although "And I Dream…" strikes as much more exciting, impressive and thoughtout CD in comparison to the one by IN DARKNESS. Generally speaking, this is melodic though rather harsh black metal, featuring various kinds of vocals, enrapturing yet anxious keyboard arrangements, masterly performed leads and harmonies as well as hellishly tremendous sound of violin, supplemented with few elements borrowed from so-called "techno death metal". Furthermore, and what's most important - INFERNAL DREAMS contrived to stay original, and isn't it a good reason to check this band out? Lastly, let me state the following: there's no single drawback when it comes to "And I Dream…", and looks like it's one more reason to purchase this effort… and purchase it immediately! (Herr Stalhammar)

IN THE NURSERY
"Exhibit"
ITN Corporation
rating: -
Unfortunately, this is only a compilation of tunes taken off various efforts by this nearly legendary UK's outfit, famous for their soundtrack works. Well, in fact, this is my first acquaintance with IN THE NURSERY, and it's definitely a pleasant one. Musically, this could be described as an imaginative cross between dark ambient and synth-pop, with few pseudo-oriental touches added. No, this is far from being similar to DEAD CAN DANCE and alike acts; IN THE NURSERY do the music they WANT TO do, and what's no less important, it's pretty difficult to compare 'em to anyone out there. As to the actual tracks off "Exhibit", I like both, the earlier ones, as well as the ones composed in late 90ties, featuring charming female voice (check out "Miracle Road" and few others) and perfectly thoughtout structures. Of course, this is NOT the music for everyone of you guys, however… there's no single reason to ignore it. At least, what about widening the musical horizons of yours, afterall?  (Herr Stalhammar)

IZAKARON
"Chaoschrist"
Eternal Art / Metal Agen
rating: 5 of 6
I'll be short this time. IZAKARON come from Russia, and they're definitely one of the most promising bands, at least among the neophytes. Musically, it's a fascinating kind of pseudo-sympho black metal, extremely well crafted and idearich. Why "pseudo"? Well, figure it out yourselves while giving this MC a listen. And yes, judging by the song titles, these guys are rather good in English. What a surprise.

KAMPFAR
"Fra Underverdenen"
Hammerheart Records
rating: 3 of 6
I don't like it. Pure Norse black metal, but nothing really special, probably with an exception for the last track (an instrumental one). Go and buy "Cosmic Genesis" by VINTERSORG - that would save your budget from spending $$$ in vain. (Herr Stalhammar)

KOROVAKILL
"Waterhells"
Red Stream Records
rating: 6 of 6
"Korovakill"? What a moniker! As a matter of fact, these guys have been previously known as "Korova", and perhaps they had to change the bandname due to the fact they left Napalm Records in order to join Red Stream's roster? Is that correct, Nick…? First and foremost, Christoph and co. finally managed to come with a WELL executed CD - at least it sounds just fine, when it comes to producership. Musically… Well, KOROVA (sorry, KOROVAKILL) still stays where it stood before - a unique band delivering certain kind of "post-apocalyptic cyber black metal". Structurally hauntingly depressive yet tremendous. Actually, it sounds more a wicked kind of opera (excluding a couple of tracks, which are more straight-forward (i.e. black metallish)) - simply check out "Drown Symphony", a weird piece (in fact, no less weird than all the songs off this CD) reminding me VENOM's "The Waste Lands", Diamanda Galas and LIFE, SEX & DEATH in the same time. "Waterhells" definitely is the best work they've done so far. Hails to thee, genius weirdos! (Herr Stalhammar)

KULT OV AZAZEL
"Triumph Of Fire"
Arctic Music Group / Pavement Music
rating: 5,5 of 6
It strikes as "No mercy!" easily could be their life motto. Am I right, Xaphan? Firstly I was a bit surprised to see Pavement Music (who're responsible for manufacturing, marketing and distributing all Arctic releases) unleashing this kind of stuff, however why not? These guys are no less musically relentless than f.ex. HATEPLOW or MALEVOLENT CREATION, so once again, "why not"? KULT OV AZAZEL doubtlessly is one of the US' most uncompromising black metal combos, at least that's what everyone would think of, once giving this CD a listen. Non-stop violence and bloodshed throughout the whole album, reminding me a bit of that "Panzer Division…" CD by MARDUK and the latest ICONOCLASM's offering (i.e. "Marching Evil…"). I can only feel pity for the drummer - at least, if he's of human origin. Gus simply beats the hell out of his drumkit. As to others, guitar and bass lines, even though they're far from being sophisticated, are no less impressive - check out "In The Plagued Realm", that one would serve as a perfect example. (Herr Stalhammar)

KVNTVR
"Vision Enferma"
Puta Satanika Productions
rating: 4 of 6
There's a huge problem we have here, man. KVNTVR deliver pretty good and no less impressive black metal, sounding a bit similar to early CARPATHIAN FOREST ("Through Chasm, Caves And Titan Woods" MCD), with a somewhat original approach to music as well as unmistakable sincerity… however, despite that I've gave this CD a listen for the fifth time 15 minutes earlier, I just can't recall what have I heard. Black metal, and nothing more. Well, not exactly, perhaps that black metal alike pseudo-ballad (!), but that's all. Therefore, if KVNTVR came up with at least a couple of tunes which ARE MEMORABLE, the mark would be much higher. While now, just a good black metal combo from Italy.

LEX TALIONIS
"Into The Shade"
Dossier Records
rating: 5 of 6
Imagine BATHORY ("Blood Fire Death" era) playing gothic (!) pagan electro-metal. I bet, you can't. Nor could I until this CD fell into my hands. The copy I own, is a re-release, since "Into The Shade" was originally recorded (and released) back in 1995, however it's still a worthy addition to your collection. Dark and perturbing, simultaneously sublime and enchanting… Ah, Mr. Westling contrived to come up with a truly charming piece! (Herr Stalhammar)

LONG WINTER'S STARE
"Tears Of Odin's Fallen"
Dark Symphonies Records
rating: 4 of 6
Ok, here's yet one more of a kind. I mean, "epic black metal". Well, maybe not exactly black metal, but not really far from it. This combo delivers a bit dreamy although somewhat perturbing and inimitably atmospheric musical canvas, blended with enrapturing female voice and unquestionable versatility. The problem is, despite the variety and unique ambience "Tears Of Odin's Fallen" comes with, it's a bit boring afterall. Furthermore, all the tunes are too prolonged, thus the "dreamy" becomes the listener… instead of the atmosphere. Anyway, those who prefer this kind of music and alike stuff (sludgy, anxious yet grim and violent, simultaneously capturing nearly romanticized ambience), would love to have this CD in their collection. (Herr Stalhammar)

LORD BLASPHEMATE
"The Sun That Never Tries"
Blasphemy Productions
rating: 3 of 6
The trend that never dies? Nope. When it comes to me, I don't consider these guys to be copycats or worthless rock-stars. LORD BLASPHEMATE (just like their label-mates GOVANON, these ones also emerge from Brazil) come up with enough diversified yet unfortunately somewhat boring blend of "gothic black metal"… Yeah yeah yeah, all this stuff with flutes, female voices, and so on and so forth. Nothing outstanding and even nothing which could be considered attractive. I'm sorry, but I've heard music of this kind for billion times, AND even though LORD BLASPHEMATE strike as pretty dedicated individuals, AND even though "The Sun That Never Dies" is pretty good work in terms of musicianship and compositional structures (although that doesn't regard sound execution; despite all the assertions made by the label of theirs…)… but… but… but… BUT. An average work. (Herr Stalhammar)

LUNGORTHIN
"Prophecy Of Eternal Winter"
Folter Records
rating: 5 of 6
"Prophecy Of Eternal Winter"?! Don't make me fucking laugh, guys. It sounds so goddamn pathetic, man! What about "DISSECTION of MAYHEMIC TRUTH (ENSLAVED in ACHERON)", huh? Anyway, despite that this album is utterly based on various kinds of cliche (just take a look at the tracklist…), musically it's much more enjoyable, moreover - highly impressive. At least, it's incredibly less generic and recurring in contrast to the latest CD by Croatia's CASTRUM (I definitely prefer the one from Ukraine). What is it alike, how does it sound alike, and what will this review will be alike? Erh, let's say, LUNGORTHIN deliver mostly mid-paced, atmospheric black metal - and fortunately they haven't attempted to clone anyone (at least it looks this way). I wouldn't say that this combo came up with an astoundingly innovative piece - no, it's just a very good CD, literally smelling with intelligent hatred (?!), and if you don't care much about originality, check out this one. "Nightshades Upon Darksoul Domain" should be the first one to give a listen to, by the way. It's a killer. (Herr Stalhammar) (Herr Stalhammar)

MANEGARM
"Havets Vargar"
Displeased Records
rating: 5 of 6
Yeah, that's MANEGARM. The same folkish black metal, inimitably crafted -the way only these Swedes contrive to do. And perhaps, a way better executed this time when it comes to sound quality. In fact, I have nothing more to say. Give this CD a listen, men! (Herr Stalhammar)

MIDNIGHT SYNDICATE
"Gates Of Delirium"
Linfaldia Records / Entity Productions
rating: 6 of 6
Strange things happen to me sometimes… I've been at asylum for a couple of weeks with my goddamn neurosis, and right after I got out of that nightmare and checked out my post, the first CD I discovered was the one by MIDNIGHT SYNDICATE. And if there was a lyrical canvas, it would tell us a haunting story of… "Haverghast Asylum". Weird, isn't it? But ok, musically it doubtlessly should be considered a progression, whereas atmospherically "Gates Of Delirium" is thousand times more anxious and perturbing, simultaneously being incredibly less grim and somber, at least in comparison to their previous work, "Realm Of Shadows". Got the point, eh? Those of you, suffering from a mental illness, definitely would recover giving this CD at least a couple of listens. At least, it is said that death is a panacea for all the illnesses, heh heh. MIDNIGHT SYNDICATE are almost equal to ESOTERIC in forcing unique ambiences, both sickly rejoicing and stunningly haunting. The difference is; ESOTERIC is dark metal, whilst MIDNIGHT SYNDICATE is dark ambient. Still no real difference, though. Those of you who wants to escape serving in the army (and everybody seems to know that Russian army is the worst and most brutal institute in a whole fucking world), definitely have to obtain this CD. Don't know what about "Haverghast", but the nearest asylum would be yours. Enter the gates of delirium… (Herr Stalhammar)

MIMETIC MUTE
"Negative"
Prikosnovenie
rating: 5,5 of 6
It's always goddamn difficult to review this kind of music (?), not being a specialist in this facility. Well, I'm not really the one to write this review, even though I truly enjoy this kind of "music" a lot… when it's well crafted, of course. To put it straight: MIMETIC MUTE deliver undoubtedly fascinating though still somewhat minimalistic mixture of droning ambient and noise / industrial, sometimes nearly hypnotic, sometimes rather anonymous, rarely - senseless. Nevertheless, this is the kind of CD I'd surely recommend to lovers of this kind of art. At least, it's no less intriguing than f.ex. BRIGHTER DEATH NOW - and that already says a lot, doesn't it…?

MORBIT
"Reflections (Chronicles Of Amber)"
"Sweet Music"
Dertod Records
rating: 6 of 6
Two former works by MORBIT, "Morphium" and it's regenerated twin "Remorphium", both appeared as undoubtedly outstanding and one of the most weird yet enrapturing efforts I've ever heard (at least when it comes to Russian bands). Well, here come two more albums - and once again, one of them ("Reflections") is all-new piece, whilst another one is some kind of a supportive release. Ok, let's start with "Reflections". Comprised of ten compositions, it's definitely most elaborated and structurally complete work MORBIT have managed to come up with, so far. It's incredibly difficult to describe their music, since all songs are different, with different mood and ambience. What would you get mixing f.ex. OXIPLEGATZ, VOIVOD, MOONSPELL ("The Butterfly Effect" CD), MARYLIN MANSON and early EVER EVE into one?! Yeah, I know it's a difficult task to answer this one. However, now you should understand me when I'm saying that it's nearly impossible to reckon MORBIT to one particular style or genre. Industrial? Well yes, the most darkly orchestrated and depraved industrial tunes are here. Gothic? Well, those who want to discover any "gothic" or alike elements in "Reflections" definitely will succeed. The same goes for those who crave to name MORBIT a black metal band. BUT, both albums are really far from being incomprehensible - they're controversial and versatile, but NOT senseless. Furthermore, I'm really glad to see (or hear?) that Dmitry's baritone gets better day by day (simply check out "The Road In Reflections", "Barren Lands" or "On The Last Way") - the same goes for (utterly depraved though still so bewitching) arrangements and sampling. As to "Sweet Music", it features a couple of live tracks (excellently recorded and performed), a couple of covers (EURYTHMICS' "Sweet Dreams" (as well as it's reworked version with new lyrics added) and QUEEN's "Princes Of The Universe"), and re-conceived and re-recorded tune off "Morphium", "Stronger Than The Fate" + it's acid jazz-alike remix (tasty!). I'm strongly convinced that when I state that this band is one of the MOST ORIGINAL IN THE WHOLE WORLD, I'm not wrong.

MORTUARY DRAPE
"Tolling 13 Knell"
Avantgarde Music
rating: 5 of 6
Finally this cult Italian combo reached the shore they must have been heading for all these years… To be honest, MORTUARY DRAPE's lack of a good record deal always surprised me. Anyway, now they're signed to Italy's premiere record company, and everything has to be fine. As to the actual CD I'm supposed to review here… Well, "Tolling…" undoubtedly appears as their best work so far. Improvement regards every single thing: the execution, the arrangements, the musicianship, the singer. In general, this is Southern blend of black metal at it's best. Simply give a listen to "Winged Priestess" (the most brilliant tune off "Tolling 13 Knell"). And finally, despite the certain metamorphosis they have endured, MORTUARY DRAPE still are (and will be) considered the band with a cult status - and that's most important. (Herr Stalhammar)

MYSTERIUM
"The Glowering Facades Of Night"
Prophecy / Sturmesflugel
rating: 3 of 6
A disappointment. Prophecy definitely have better and more notable bands in their roster. As to MYSTERIUM, this Germany's outfit comes up with pretty mediocre atmospheric and somewhat romanticized black metal… Not much to add here. You see, the unique problem with acts of this kind consists in the utter mediocrity. You simply can't drag it into shit due to the fact "The Glowering Facades…" doesn't suck neither musically, nor technically. And no, this isn't a crap in terms of producership. It's just so damn MEDIOCRE. (Herr Stalhammar)

NAERVAER
"Skiftninger"
Ember Music / Prophecy Productions
rating: -
What the hell is this?! Can anybody tell me?! I fear, that anyone who has given this CD a listen, wouldn't be able to characterize it. Formerly NAERVAER appeared as a side-project of IN THE WOODS…' guys, whilst now, when IN THE WOODS… is no more, it seems like they've plenty of time to concentrate on NAERVAER. Too bad, because, even if IN THE WOODS… music wasn't for everyone, I like it a lot - and sorry, I can't say the same about NAERVAER. Varying from moody pseudo-blues alike tunes, getting through the thickets of pseudo-dark ambient, to reach the shores of pseudo-psychedelic stuff as well as pure improvisation, these individuals must have forgotten, that even improvisation should be of sound mind (taking jazz as an example) and "limitless" doesn't necessarily mean "comprehensible". Honestly speaking, I like a couple of tunes off "Skiftninger", such as "Sug 99" or "To Oyer…", but in the whole this work leaves me confused, negatively astonished and definitely embarrassed. Needless to say, it was a huge disappointment. Better no mark this time, though. (Herr Stalhammar)

NECROMICON
"Pecatta Mundi"
Hammerheart Records
rating: 4,5 of 6
What the hell… First tunes off this CD sound like NECROMICON have turned their backs on black metal and started developing their own path in techno-death… But no, later they get back to what this CD was meant to be, i.e. enigmatic, somewhat hysteric yet fascinating and original shape of black metal. Most weird effort NECROMICON have put out so far, but still highly intriguing. (Herr Stalhammar)

NECROPHOBIC
"The Third Antichrist"
Black Mark Productions
rating: 4 of 6
Want an honest review? Ok. I DO NOT like NECROPHOBIC. At least, their previous works left me completely cold. It's a bit different with this one, though. "The Third Antichrist" fortunately is not that "Swedish". Not a worthless copycat of SACRILEGE and others of that ilk, y'know. Much more personal and intriguing stuff this time. In short, this is sometimes fast-, sometimes mid-paced black / death metal with atmosphere, although, of course, it doesn't lack drawbacks, such as weakly sounding drumkit. Nevertheless, at the moment NECROPHOBIC IS the band to check out. (Herr Stalhammar)

NEGURA BUNGET
"Maiastru Sfetnic"
Bestial Records
rating: 4 of 6
Romania keeps on (musically) stating that this land shouldn't be considered a pile a crap when it comes to metal scene, and well, it strikes as NEGURA BUNGET is one of the premiere black metal acts in Transylvania. This one is the third work of theirs (by the way, the first one was brought the light by US' "Mr.True" - Akhenaten and pathetic Breath Of Night Records, whose mastermind he appears), and it's neither a failure, however nor do is a masterpiece. Being comprised of six tunes and lasting for an hour, coming with strangely visualized yet no less stunning packaging, "Maiastru Sfetnic" appears as pure black metal; slightly vanguard at times, even though the absolute majority of the compositions off this work appear as fast-paced; even a bit incomprehensible when it comes to few passages (that's why the mark is only '4' out of '6'), although enough enjoyable; possessing doubtlessly enrapturing aura and a trace of originality. To my surprise, the whole album sounds quite fascinating, thus having nothing in common with the notion of "boredom". As to comparisons… Well, the only name which popped in my mind almost at once, was (early) IMMORTAL (circa "Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism"). Honestly speaking, I don't have any idea what does it have to deal with lyrically, hence let me just cite the promo sheet: "The whole lyrical aspect of "Maiastru Sfetnic" can be seen as an universal concept poem-legend envisioning our personal vision upon the prophetic side of the territory known as Transilvania, upon the connection between the black metal ideology and the natural spiritual impulse of these Transilvanian lands. Based upon the precedents concepts followed by NEGURA BUNGET, such as The Universal Transcendent Black Metal, Blood, Immortality, Transilvanian Spirituality, "Maiastru Sfetnic" moves everything far beyond. more into universality, legend and honour". (Herr Stalhammar)

NIFELHEIM
"Servants Of Darkness"
Black Sun Records
rating: 5,5 of 6
Yeah, the old school here. However, what about this statement: "… after having kicked out Morbid Slaughter for having a girlfriend". Hey wait, the old school fortunately doesn't suck big time, but what the hell, are these guys fags?! Perhaps these poor homos are HAVING each other at times instead of having a female being, heh heh. Nevertheless, "Servants Of Darkness" is a third work in the shape of full length by this Swedish weirdos' trio, and most probably, it's the best effort they have managed to come up with so far. Violent and all-devouring, harsh and raw yet incredibly atmospheric, as well as rather technical. This definitely sounds like a blast from the very hell itself… Check out "Bestial Avenger" and "War Of Demon (Armageddon)", these ones strike as the most impressive tunes off "Servants Of Darkness". Perhaps I should consider arranging the interview with NIFELHEIM? Don't know, really. If I ever come up with a questionnaire, it will be a provocative one for sure. I just hate this kind of attitude, you see. So if have a keyboard-player, you aren't metal anymore?! What the fuck. BATHORY and CELTIC FROST and VENOM and all those old-times heroes DID use synths, so wake up morons! And what's wrong with your image? It's just stupid. Ridiculous, if you want my opinion. All these spikes and shit, aren't they only for all these "true-to-the-core" teens getting high on bands like NIFELHEIM? No, I'm not going to say that you have to look like EMPEROR (fags), however NIFELHEIM's appearance simply makes me laugh(out loud). Anyway, the music doesn't become a shit because of that. "The band would also like to send a personal message to everyone out there: FUCK OFF". Thank you! (Herr Stalhammar)

NIGHT CONQUERS DAY
"Rebellion Is The Art Of Survival"
Hammerheart Records
rating: 2 of 6
Definitely a DISAPPOINTMENT. Whilst NIGHT CONQUERS DAY's debut CD was something I truly enjoyed, this one appears as a boring piece of black metal with no actual highlights or whatsoever. Yes, Mikael's voice still is doubtlessly recognizable, so is the music, but so what? Pretending to be epic, he gets nothing but a boredom and lack of imagination instead. Sorry Mikael, but this is a complete failure. (Herr Stalhammar)

NOCTUARY
"When Fires Breed Blood"
Lost Disciple Records
rating: 6 of 6
What a jewel we have here! It seems like I've heard a couple of tracks by NOCTUARY few years ago, and I wouldn't say I was impressed. Well, now I'm not impressed as well. I'm just knocked down. "When Fires Breed Blood" undoubtedly is one of the most fresh, exciting and innovative black metal-related works among those I've heard lately. Stunning bass lines, precise drumming and fantastic riffing, supplemented with nearly astounding synths… Ooooooh, that was a tough experience! It almost made me speechless, to say the least. A MUST. (Herr Stalhammar)

NOKTURNAL MORTUM
"NeChrist"
The End Records
rating: 6 of 6
So, now these Ukrainian freaks consider themselves 'national-socialists'. Well, why not? Honestly speaking, I doubt if any of them has an IQ higher than 20, however that doesn't seem to affect the music. Together with "Lunar Poetry", "NeChrist" is the band career's highlight, no doubts. Finally lacking any kind of boredom and surprisingly much better executed (in terms of sound. The graphic execution is beyond asceticism, simultaneously being somewhat conceptual), this CD comes with 9 brand new tracks as well as a bonus (actually, remix of a song off "Lunar Poetry"… seemingly sung in Russian?), although the total number of tracks is 88. However, don't be scared. NOKTURNAL MORTUM isn't a grindcore band and I guess they will never be the one - all the "additional tracks" appear as the sounds of the nature. What's the sense in puttin' all of them together? I don't know. Really. The only thing I know, "NeChrist" is an excellent (and once again, original… goddammit!) piece of folk-spiced furious black metal of Slavonic origin, sounding too fascinating and fresh and thus obviously provoking banal envy… (Herr Stalhammar)

NOMANS LAND
"The Last Son Of The Fjord"
Fono Records
rating: 1 of 6
Let me wonder, who needs yet one more band shamelessly cloning MITHOTYN? I guess, at least few of us do, otherwise this CD shouldn't have been released. Ok, this is viking metal of Russian (!!!!!!!) origin, coming with "clean" vocals (later about that) and all the possible cliches when it comes to musical canvas. The sound execution isn't the one I would ever possibly enjoy, so is the musicianship. The layout sucks as well, due to the fact it's been simply STOLEN (the same goes for the "artwork"). Getting back to vocals, though. The timbre is pretty nice and enjoyable (sort of pseudo-baritone, you see), however this guy undoubtedly MUST NOT make any attempts to sing, at least at the moment.
If you can't find this CD being sold at the music store nearby but nevertheless still interested in purchasing it, email Fono Records at <metal@fono.ru> or check out their official website at <www.fono.ru> (this concerns only those who reside in Russia and CIS States, though).

NOMICON
"Halla"
Sagitarius Productions
rating: 6 of 6
In fact, I'm really fond of listening to worthy music in the shape of CD-R, and it's twice as sad in case with NOMICON, since "Halla" is nearly a genius piece. Mr. Launonen continues to elaborate that "avantgardistic black metal" line, and unsurprisingly we get a CD which is thousand times better than both "The Me" and "Yellow" at all points. Actually, it's quite useless to make any kind of attempt to describe "Halla" - consequently let me just dare to give you an advice: once you see this shiny round thing entitled with a strange (Finnish?) word selling anywhere, FUCKING GET IT. I believe, both orthodox and open-minded individuals definitely will consider this work a brilliant one. At least, NOMICON is one of my favorite acts at the moment. Enough said.

NOTRE DAME
"Vol 1: Le Theatre Du Vampire"
Osmose Productions
rating: 6 of 6
Oh… Yes, I expected that this work would turn out as rather innovative, weird and structurally unpredictable piece… but what I've heard was beyond any of my expectations. Snowy Shaw and co. contrived to come up with almost a unique piece of what they prefer to define as "horror metal". Well, exactly, this is horror metal and nothing else, at least judging by the ambiences this album is impregnated with, judging by the unique songwriting and idearich musical canvas, judging by the approach to music, and finally, judging by what we get on the outcome, definitely one of last year's highlights in the black… oops, sorry - "horror metal" genre. (Herr Stalhammar)

OF THE WAND AND THE MOON
"Nighttime Nightrhymes"
Euphonious Records
rating: 4,5 of 6
I really enjoyed this one. And yes, "folk noir" appears as an excellent definition for this band. Once again "yes": this is folk, and this is noir. Comprised of (mostly) SATURNUS' members, OF THE WAND AND THE MOON delivers a unique musical canvas of their own, free from all the comparisons or whatever. If you get high on pseudo-folkloristic, grim and sorrowful yet tremendous sort of art, check it out. Highly recommended. (Herr Stalhammar)

ORCISH BLOOD
"Moral Invalid"
Hobgoblin Records
rating: 2 of 6
Third album brought forth the light within a couple of years??? Well, I guess that living in Severodvinsk (one of the most Northern cities of Russia) these guys just don't have anything to do besides composing few more ORCISH BLOOD's works. -25 / 30 at winter is no shit, y'know. Kinda dream for all those pathetic "Norse" pseudo-black metallers from Norway and stuff, I believe. They'd die shortly after arriving to Severodvinsk, anyway. And just by the way, ORCISH BLOOD is not a black metal band. More likely, atmospheric industrial / death metal with difference. "Clean" male and (jazz-alike) female voices, synths and quite thought-provoking lyrics… but these guys still have to work hard on arrangements and overall execution. The sound is so-so, the musicianship is so-so - well, actually, everything single thing is so fucking far from perfection. Nothing more to add. (Herr Stalhammar)

PAGAN RITES
"Bloodlust And Devastation"
Primitive Art Records
rating: 4 of 6
Oops! I thought PAGAN RITES were dead and gone for a long time - I even wrote an article, kind of homage to this unique band… But no, here they are, back again. "Bloodlust And Devastation" is the newest work by Tomas and co., unleashed in the shape of strictly limited (666 copies) LP. When it comes to music, it's black metal. True to the core, you see. Sludgy and deeply atmospheric, harsh and somehow bewitching. And of course, Tomas' voice still is an inimitable one - however I was really disappointed due to the fact he doesn't sing "clean" here. One more thing I'd cavil at, goes for the variety. Or more likely, the lack of variety. The sound execution is pretty average (and undoubtedly underground), but stop! I didn't say it sucks. Anyway, those who crave for a) originality b) unique kind of music / vokills c) truthfully honest approach to black metal… GET IT. "Burn the churches, kill the priest, rape the nuns, desecration!!…"

PANDEMIA
"Spreading The Message"
Lost Disciple Records
rating: 5 of 6
Death metal? I wouldn't say so. In my view, musically PANDEMIA is more likely a perfect amalgamation of both death and black metal. In fact, there's not much to be said in regards to this CD. Fast and raw yet diversified and well thoughtout, brutal yet intelligent… Moreover, it's distinguishable and nearly original. Actually, there's enormous number of various epithets fitting these Czechs, however none of them would ever be the synonym for PANDEMIA's very essence. Perhaps, you'd better go and buy this effort instead of listening to my pathetic bubbling…? (Herr Stalhammar)

PENITENT
"Maestro Beethoven"
Memento Mori / Dark Vinyl
rating: 6 of 6
I always loved PENITENT, but this one is far beyond any kind of praising, to be honest. It's nearly GENIUS. "Maestro Beethoven" undoubtedly is a very special CD, since it doesn't feature any tunes composed by Karsten himself, but only Beethoven's most mindshattering and heartrending compositions, such as "Fur Elise", "Ode To Joy" and "Egmont Overture"… It seems to be utterly useless to make any attempts figuring out whether Karsten failed or succeeded - definitely the latter. Sorry for such a short review, but since I'm still completely blown away by "Maestro Beethoven", I guess I won't be able to add anything worth mentioning. Karsten is excellent in performing (as well as composing…) outstanding works within the bounds of dark ambient / neo-classical sort of music, therefore if you adore idearich, masterfully composed (and played), enrapturing musical soundscapes, the ones far from being minimalistic, this is A MUST for you. (Herr Stalhammar)

PERPETUAL
"Ad Perpetuam Rei Memoriam"
Thrash Corner Records
rating: 3,5 of 6
This is pretty enjoyable stuff, although I wouldn't say that "Ad Perpetuam Rei Memoriam" has at least a little chance to become this issue's highlight. Puerto Rico's PERPETUAL deliver rather orthodox form of black metal with few keyboards thrown in here and there as well as surprisingly masterly performed leads. I believe, that's all I can say. (Herr Stalhammar)

REIGN OF EREBUS
"Of Blackest Magick"
Blackend Records
rating: 5,5 of 6
Looks like UK's Blackend have found new and undoubtedly worthy (?) substitute for CRADLE OF FILTH. This quartet sounds exactly the same way as "The Principle Of Evil Made Flesh" sounded, however I see nothing bad in it. Excellent CD (at least, it would be considered "excellent" by atmospheric black metal-lovers… not the kind of stuff for "true" freaks, y'know). If you miss the CoF's old days, check it out! (Herr Stalhammar)

REVENANT
"Chaos Paradox"
Beyond… Productions
rating: 5,5 of 6
Probably, it's the worthiest recording ever made at Nadir Studios (owned by SADIST's Tommy Talamanca), also being amongst the most stunning CD ever released by Italy's Beyond… Productions. REVENANT, being a relatively young combo, offers undoubtedly intriguing musical canvas, appearing as a mixture of stylistic multitude with black metal as top priority. All the four tunes off this MCD are very complex and structurally just uniquely thoughtout! Deimos holds his vocal duties in a no less astounding way, being capable of varying his voice from typical blackish croaking to sublime declamations and enjoyable "clean" singing. Even though I consider REVENANT nearly 100% original act, let me nevertheless make one and only comparison. FORBIDDEN SITE is the name - especially when it comes to "La Cute Del Male", the last track off "Chaos Paradox". Concluding this review, I must admit that REVENANT strikes as one of the best newborn black metal acts in Italy, which has been always known for it's pathetic scene. (Herr Stalhammar)

ROK
"Burning Metal"
Modern Invasion Music
rating: 4 of 6
HELLHAMMER / early SODOM-alike stuff is what ROK all about, I suppose. In fact, this band is being led by Rok (SADISTIK EXECUTION's frontman), hence it strikes as this one appears as his side project. Not really a success, and not really a failure. You know, "Burning Metal" appears as rather enjoyable piece, although it's still far from being convincing. Regarding comparisons, this CD reminds me a lot of the earliest works by BATHORY. Lyrically, "Burning Metal" is doubtlessly far from being intelligent - just look at the song titles ("Satanik Slut", "Sex And Lust", "Funeral Guts", etc.)! Nevertheless, "Burning Metal" comes with few highlights, such as "Black Leather" and "Vampire" (8-minutes long sublime piece, feat. enchanting female voice in the background). In short - if you're one of those who get high on this "retro-thrash" disaster, this is for you. (Herr Stalhammar)

SATARIAL
"The Queen Of The Elves' Land"
Beyond… Productions
rating: 1 of 6 (K. M. Stalhammar)
        2 of 6 (F. A. Stalhammar)
I've been told a lot concerning this band, and I still don't know whose opinion I'm going to adhere to. SATARIAL definitely is not a young band, when it comes to their experience, but let me doubt that they had gained anything until now, when it comes to their ability to play, as well as compositional talents.  Stylistically, this is gothic kind of metal, definitely blackened, as well as heavily spiced with folkish elements. Well, no doubts that the stuff these guys deliver, is original (honestly speaking, I haven't ever heard a single band similar to SATARIAL), and yes, their theatrical background also should be appreciated, but I still cannot really understand how could they stay at such an average way of performance's technique?? Guitars and keyboards' lines aren't the ones to be considered sophisticated - perhaps, "utterly simplified" is a better description. Demogorgon (the drummer) is the only one in the band, whose skills are far above average. Besides the aforesaid, I feel like I have to mention that compositionally "The Queen…" is quite weak effort - some structures just don't work well together, you know (listen to "Son Of The Astral Fire", for example). The recording's quality is really good one, but I fear that it makes this album's drawbacks even more visible. As a conclusion, it isn't the kind of CD to be adored - and definitely not the kind of album to be immediately purchased. (Felix A. Stalhammar)

SCALD
"Nematoid: Specimen Parts I-IV"
"Nematoid: Specimen Parts V-IIX"
self-released
rating: 5 of 6
No, these are not Russian gods of dark doom metal reincarnated. THIS SCALD comes with… Ireland. Wow! Actually, I thought (and it seems like it was yet another form of prejudice) it would be in the same vein as CRUACHAN and stuff like that, however, despite all my expectations, SCALD delivers no less unique form of a cross between furious black and death metal, a bit similar to SACRAMENTARY ABOLISHMENT at times (due to their grindcore roots, I believe?). Both MCDs consist of a couple of songs only (4 and 3 compositions in particular), however I wouldn't say these are short ones. 20 minutes and more, you see (I'm talking about the albums' overall length, of course). Well, what else… Both "Nematoids" come with a STUNNING artwork - I guess, it will be no wonder to me when someone informs me of an artistic exhibition held by Paul (who appears as the band's drummer and artist in the same time). Drawbacks? Well, try to discover at least one of 'em… You're a lucky man, if you'll succeed. Truly a band to be noticed.

SEVERNIE VRATA
"Otchizna"
Fono Records
rating: 3,5 of 6
Jewish guys claiming to be Russian nationalists? Isn't it pathetic…? Nevertheless, despite this band's utter insincerity when it comes to their beliefs (and origin), I must admit that musically this MCD appears as rather stunning piece of pagan metal. Enough (but only "enough"!) enjoyable "clean" voice, finely programmed drumset and guitar harmonies solely based on cliches. As to the lyrical canvas, it could be easily compared to vocals - nice, but demanding to be improved. And just like in case with NOMANS LAND, the layout is (unfortunately) utterly minimalistic. What a pity. If I'm not mistaken, these chaps are going to come up with a newest work of theirs soon, this time recorded at Finland's Astia Studios (CHILDREN OF BODOM, ENTWINE, etc.) - hope this one will be at least A BIT better than "Otchizna". "Nenastje" and "Bylye Vremena" kick ass, though…
If you can't find this CD being sold at the music store nearby but nevertheless still interested in purchasing it, email Fono Records at <metal@fono.ru> or check out their official website at <www.fono.ru> (this concerns only those who reside in Russia and CIS States, though).

SEVERNIE VRATA
"Otchizna"
Fono Records
rating: 5,5 of 6
I completely disagree. In my opinion, SEVERNIE VRATA are 100% sincere in their approach to everything they're doing. Yes, the layout isn't the best one, but I consider it the only drawback. Vocals (both "clean" and harsh), lyrics, music, arrangements - everything is splendid. "Nenastje" and "Bylye Vremena" definitely are the excellent compositions, but no less excellent than all the others. It looks like SEVERNIE VRATA is one of the most promising (and original) bands in Russia at the moment. ... Too bad that this one is only a mini-CD. (Felix A.Stalhammar)

SHADOW
"Shadow"
Spinefarm Records
(provided by Fono Records)
rating: 1 of 6
CHILDREN OF BODOM + AT THE GATES = yet one more Swedish school black / death metal clone, this time coming from Japan. And oh my goodness, they also have a drummachine incorporated! I definitely don't need this crap.

SHAMASH
"Eternal As Time"
Oz Productions
rating: 6 of 6
In fact, this CD is far from being "brand new"-sort of stuff, but let me dare to review it anyway, ok? Out almost two years ago, it has performed definitely a long way towards my stereo… and I didn't like "Eternal As Time" at all, giving it a listen for the first time. But… y'know, when I gave it one more chance… it stunned me. Definitely stunned. Once you've started to listen to this CD, it won't let you up until the very end… in order to push the "play button again… and again… and again… Incredibly (amazingly?) well crafted, featuring no less than fantastic synth and bass lines and vocals which vary from semi-black screaming to inhuman CoF-alike shrieks, "Eternal As Time" strikes as the best CD ever released by Mexico's Oz Productions! By the way, check out two instrumental tunes (bass solo and neoclassical-sounding piece). A MUST. (Herr Stalhammar)

SIZZLE
"Natural Elements"
Facthedral's Hall
rating: 5,5 of 6
It's been a long time since a worthy piece of noise / industrial sort of stuff got into my hands. Well, fortunately the wait is over with France's SIZZLE. There's not much to be said in regards to this CD. In short, "Natural Elements" appears as rather minimalistic (far from being primitive, though) noise / industrial in the vein of BRIGHTER DEATH NOW and DEUTSCH NEPAL (more similar to the latter band due to the fact the sounds are less random, whilst the whole musical canvas strikes as much more atmospheric and thoughtout simultaneously being quite versatile and diversified). Intriguing - and that's more than enough in such a case, dontcha think? GET IT!

SOMNUS
"Awakening The Crown"
Root'o'Evil Records
rating: 4,5 of 6
Ok, "Awakening The Crown" strikes as the kind of CD I really like, even though it's really far from being a masterpiece. All of the ten tracks this album is comprised of, appear as mid-paced, melancholic yet somewhat morbid cross between black, doom and death metal. Vocally, it represents both kinds of harsh voices, screaming and growling, with addition of charming female voice. Keyboards are of course present here, although I wouldn't say they play the leading role. In the whole, the music is very well crafted, and giving it a listen is incredibly enjoyable experience. (Herr Stalhammar)

STONEHENGE
"Scum Brigade"
More Hate Productions
rating: 5,5 of 6
For yet one more time STONEHENGE chaps drastically change their musical direction. This time it's groovy mixture of gothic and heavy metal, accompanied by Alex's infernal, black metallish vokills. Musically, "Scum Brigade" appears as quite variable piece (f.ex. "The Eyes Of The Violator" almost strikes as a semi-ballad!), featuring at least a couple of stunning leads, reminding me a lot of the latest works by SCHEITAN (especially SCHEITAN!), ABSURDUS, BRIM STONE… and KOROL' & SHUT (KiSH). But hey, let us don't give a damn about any kind of comparisons. This is undoubtedly original work, whilst the only drawback goes for Alex, who unfortunately doesn't have such a wide vocal range as Vlad had + few tunes off "Scum Brigade" appear as quite monotonous pieces. As to the lyrical canvas… Well, it's utterly different from what we used to know STONEHENGE for. In fact, everything's OBVIOUSLY different, since the band has endured huge metamorphosis when it comes to lineup: Alex "The Duke" (a.k.a. Ixxaander) replaced Vlad at the microphone, whilst the second guitarist's place has been finally filled with Pavel "Bush", undoubtedly mature and skillful chap. Sergey "Lazar" still is the one responsible for all the compositional aspects, though. When it comes to my fave tracks off "Scum Brigade", these are "Spit In His Face!" and "Warmen" (b.t.w., this one heavily (and strangely) reminds me of RUNNING WILD). Generally speaking, this is melodious goth (and especially) heavy metal influenced stuff, which doesn't have anything to do with doom anymore (although who knows, maybe they'll get back to their roots with the fifth album). Atmospherically this is just fine - the same goes for sound execution and performance's technique… So what do you want me to add?! Everything's been said and done already. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
P.S. Oops, almost forgot. Check out the "hidden" track, musically in the vein of STONEHENGE (I still can't figure out if it's someone's cover or not), featuring enjoyable "clean" vocals.

SYMAWRATH
"Scaena I: Incestuous Overture In The Crystal Auditorium"
Abstract Emotions Records
rating: 1 of 6
Aren't you tired of this so-called "sympho-black" metal movement, seemingly getting bigger and bigger nowadays?? I AM tired. Nevertheless, I'm destined to review yet one more product of this kind, this time the band coming from Spain. And YES, and once again YES, this is FUCKING SYMPHO-BLACK METAL IN THE DIMMU BORGIR WAY. Just look at the band's pic, as well as utterly ridiculous song titles (such as "Misanthropic Criminal In The Ivory Scorpion", for instance), add pathetically programmed drummachine and complete lack of originality. Even though someone from ASGAROTH attempted to help out SYMAWRATH in the studio, they fucking fail. A DISASTER. (Herr Stalhammar)

TAETRE
"Out Of Emotional Disorder"
Diehard Music
rating: 5 of 6
Sweden. Gothenburg. Now make a guess what we have to deal with, this time? Exactly, "Swedish death / black metal", fortunately this time "Swedish death / black metal with difference". Actually, TAETRE come from another town, not Gothenburg, and probably this is why they sound more distinguishable than most of these DARK TRANQULLITY / AT THE GATES / IN FLAMES clones? So, what do you expect me to say here? "Out Of Emotional Disorder" strikes as pretty well crafted piece of METAL, be it death or black (more likely, something in between), featuring few highlights such as "Poisoned (Hearts Black Soil)" and "An Epitaph Carven" as well as ROLLING STONES' "Paint It Black" (this one also features "clean" vocals (besides AT THE GATES-alike black metallish shrieking)), definitely a stunning cover! Graphically, this CD is no less enrapturing, and the same goes for sound execution (courtesy of Andy La Roque and his Los Angered Recordings), therefore the conclusion appears as pretty simple: if you like any of the bands mentioned in this review, you'll love this one. If you crave for originality, better forget about this work. (Herr Stalhammar)

THEATRE OF THE MACABRE
"A Paradise In Flesh And Blood"
Root'o'Evil Records
rating: 1 of 6
Someone tell me, why do all of these so-called "critics" can't stop praising this band? THEATRE OF THE MACABRE definitely IS NOT the kind of act worth the praise. Some thin-sounding, weakly arranged, completely uninteresting black metal. Moreover - it's boring. No atmosphere, no innovations, no ambience, just nothing. Poor man's CRADLE OF FILTH, you see. Not the kind of CD I would ever give a second listen. (Herr Stalhammar)

THORIUM
"Ocean Of Blasphemy"
Diehard Music
rating: 4,5 of 6
Half-Swedish / half-Danish combo playing relentless anti-christian death metal, featuring members of WITHERING SURFACE and TAETRE, executed at Norway's legendary Grieghallen Studios?? Whew, sounds tasty! In fact, DEICIDE's "Lunatic Of God's Creation" cover, this CD comes with, already explains more than enough. Yes, this is blackened death metal, yes, it's more European-styled (despite that most of reviewers define "Ocean Of Blasphemy" as heavily influenced by US death metal school piece) - and this is why it didn't get the better mark. Delivering more violent stuff wouldn't harm anything. It just doesn't reach the brutality of DEICIDE or former works by ILLDISPOSED, you see. Nevertheless, "Ocean Of Blasphemy" definitely is the CD to watch out. By the way, they're going to come up with a second offering soon - this time recorded at Slovakia's Exponent Studios! What a bunch of freaks, heh heh… (Herr Stalhammar)

THOR'S HAMMER
"May The Hammer Smash The Cross"
Ancestral Research / Cymophane Records
rating: 4 of 6
Here we have the second offering brought forth the light by Capricornus (ex-GRAVELAND), undoubtedly an exciting one. Starting with a horrifying intro (courtesy of Rob Darken), and later developing into old-school (though modernly performed and executed) death / black metal, once again pretty much similar to earlier works by Greece's VARATHRON, "May The Hammer…" strikes as undoubtedly worthy piece of NS black (death?) metal. Strange but it sounds like Capricornus decided to incorporate drummachine, which is actually an unexplainable move, since he's one of the best drummers in Poland! Anyway, even if it's a drummachine, this CD sounds pretty much intriguing and distinguishable. Ah, almost forgot: the last track off "May The Hammer…" appears as ABSURD's "Gates Of Heaven" interpretation.

THUNDERBOLT / KATAXU
"Black Clouds Over Dark Majesty" / "Roots Thunder"
Ancestral Research / Cymophane Records
rating: 5,5 of 6
Well, here comes yet one more split CD brought forth the light by the finest NS record company the Universe has ever witnessed. At least, that's what I think of them at the moment. It's obviously (a bit) less impressive than that magnificent "Raiders Of Revenge" split (featuring HONOR and GRAVELAND; see the review elsewhere), however still worthy enough to make you enraptured. Musically, both acts are pretty similar to each other, even though Piaty (the mastermind behind KATAXU) makes (perhaps even too much) emphasis on synth lines. This is true black metal coming with an incredibly dark yet somewhat sorrowful atmosphere forced, as well as doubtless sincerity. You know, this CD makes me to recall those days when black metal acts were few in number, delivering the sort of music one would never forget once giving it a listen, when christian churches were burning bright, when black metal was just an embryo. Do I regret that these days are gone now, with dimmu burgers entering national charts, and so and so forth? I do and I do not. Nevertheless, nor THUNDERBOLT neither KATAXU deliver archaic sort of stuff; quite the contrary, it doesn't have anything in common with archaisms, eclecticism or whatever. If you wish to wander the "great vast forests" simultaneously staying at home, check this one out. As to the political message… Well, I do support 'em. If you don't, it's definitely not my fucking problem.

THYRANE
"The Spirit Of Rebellion"
Spinefarm Records
(provided by Fono Records)
rating: 4 of 6
Modern black metal. This is what it is. Unsurprisingly, "The Spirit Of Rebellion" isn't the first CD offered by these Finnish chaps, and unsurprisingly it's way better than the former works of theirs, even though if those ones were far above average. Yes, fucking hell, this is MODERN BLACK METAL. THYRANE simply accompanies such acts as MACTATUS, ANOREXIA NERVOSA and a couple (???) of others, when it comes to this newborn definition. Everything is doubtlessly pro-done, everything is so goddamn polished, yet still being somewhat raw enough to be considered black metal. Ok with me, but "The Spirit Of Rebellion" isn't the sort of CD I'd gladly give a second listen to, even if it's definitely a worthy piece. Finally, I keep on doubting if these guys are true to what they claim they're dedicated to…

Congratulations. Now THYRFING play viking heavy metal. Just check out that "Over The Hills And Far Away" track (originally conceived by Gary Moore, by the way). Actually, it's pretty refreshing and far from being trendy or whatever. And hey man, I just love those "clean" vocals! A killer.

THYRFING
"Hednaland"
Hammerheart Records
rating: -
What about renaming Hammerheart to "Re-issue-heart"? As a matter of fact, these guys definitely are fond of re-releasing various rarities. F.ex. here comes THYRFING's demo material. Is this CD worth of purchasing? Well… I believe, the answer will be "yes". Even though, they were far from being a mature band back then… (Herr Stalhammar)

TORMENTOR
"Recipe Ferrum!"
Avantgarde Music
rating: -
If it's not the only issue the contents of which you're acquainted with, then you must know that I got high on TORMENTOR's former work, "Anno Domini", actually a demo effort, re-issued in the shape of CD eight years after it's been executed. And now we have a deal with Italy's Avantgarde Music as well as the second offering entitled in a bit less clichesque way than the first one. Actually, it's also billion times less predictable and enjoyable, being a bizarre mixture of all the genres within metal, starting with gothic rock and ending with furious BM. Moreover, there're only few tracks I'd reckon to such a notion as "music" when it comes to "Recipe Ferrum!", and even though they're pretty lengthy, I still can't really understand why the hell did they have to add all those drunken bleating, whispers and other utterly incomprehensible sort of stuff. So you see? Even if "Recipe Ferrum!" lasts for more than an hour, it doesn't feature enough highlights in order to be purchased. What a pity. Seems like Attila completely gone mad. (Herr Stalhammar)

VAMPIRIA
"Among Mortals"
Icarus Music / War Is Imminent Productions
rating: 6 of 6
As long as we exist, we crave for the utter perfection knowing not it's almost impossible to create anything that would be considered "perfect" by every living soul. One would name it loathsome, another one - tremendous. But all of us are different, thus having different points of view, different tastes, different perception of the world surrounding us in all it's details. As a matter of fact, I'm not alone right now. My girlfriend sits near me, while I'm listening to this CD seemingly for the thousandth time. And for the millionth time I adore it, and for the trillionth time she tells me she detests it. Well, if you reckon yourself to "true black metal" advocates, you'd better agree with Irene and stop reading this review right now. I hope I made myself enough clear. Because I'm going to praise the band, which most definitely would be considered a "poser" one by all those true-to-the-feeble-core non-entities. In my view, Argentina's (!) VAMPIRIA represents all the, let's say "treasures", we have discovered within the bounds of black metal genre so far. "Gothic BM"? Probably. But it's not really gothic, nor it's really black metal. It's VAMPIRIA. VAMPIRIA who managed to deliver uniquely sounding canvas of poetic soundscapes; tremendous ambiences and enchanting harmonies, enigmatic vocals (both "screaming"-alike (excellent) and "clean" ones (no less excellent)) and fascinating solos, bewitching neo-classical interludes and absolutely amazing orchestrations. All the individuals taking in part in VAMPIRIA are enough skilled to make you forget about 99% of contemporary black metal "musicians" and their worthless works (or more likely, their garbage). Every single tune off "Among Mortals" won't leave your mind and recollections for at least a couple of centuries… And packed in a truly enrapturing way, this CD would become an oasis for all those human beings who are capable of distinguishing true compositional art from image-based crap. A JEWEL. (Herr Stalhammar)

VEILED ALLUSIONS
"A Curious Dimension"
Bestial Records / Art Vision
rating: 4 of 6
Finally I've grabbed my hands on this work, yet another project brought forth the light by Karsten Hamre, the kind of person who, I guess, doesn't have to be introduced. Let me assume that most of you are already acquainted with PENITENT and ARCANE ART - and here comes the third project (or how should I name it?) he takes part it. Or more likely, here comes the third project being his brainchild. Well, sad to say, but I still prefer PENITENT over all of his effort made aside. "A Curious Dimension" strikes as rather enjoyable piece of dark ambient, this time more electronically oriented. And yes, just like in case with the latest ARCANE ART's offering, one would discover female voice incorporated here and there. All in all, this is quite good work, however it simply isn't capable of impressing me the way f.ex. "Maestro Beethoven" does. (Herr Stalhammar)

VINDSVAL
"Imperium Grotesque"
Skaldic Art Productions
rating: 6 of 6
Skaldic Art is a neophyte label (run by FALKENBACH's mastermind, Mr. Vakyas), however at least a couple of groundbreaking releases has been already released under it's banners. And "Imperium Grotesque" definitely is the most exciting among 'em. Evolving from raw and primitive Norse-inspired black metal represented on their early demo works, VINDSVAL managed to transform it into highly innovative, idearich, polyphonic kind of metal art. Fortunately it's still black metal, however not your typical DIMMU BORGIR copycat or whatever. "Imperium…" features enigmatic, versatile and diverse material, with a solid dose of synth lines, although guitars is what these guys make emphasis on. As to keyboards, Berzerk must be a really talented composer and musician, at least judging by the enrapturing instrumental piece this CD comes with. Well, all in all, "Imperium…" is nearly a genius work with no goddamn drawbacks to be discovered, consequently: HIGHEST RECOMMENDATIONS. (Herr Stalhammar)

VINTERSORG
"Cosmic Genesis"
Napalm Records
rating: 6 of 6
I'm strongly convinced that dedicating this band's newest CD review a huge space in my mag would be no less than ridiculous attempt to describe the indescribable. "Cosmic Genesis" is THE BEST work by Vintersorg and co. thus far, also being THE BEST folk / metal album I've heard for ages. Work of a genius, you see. "Cosmic Genesis" is almost close to perfection and that makes me frightened a bit, since you can't create anything valuable once you reach the very PEAK… (Herr Stalhammar)

VORAK
"Triumph Of The Will"
Destruktive Kommandoh
rating: 1 of 6
What the fuck… Modern Invasion surprisingly decided to submit me the CD which has been released five years ago (i.e. back in 1996), (if I'm not mistaken) appearing as the CD the guy behind VORAK made his debut with. Well, actually it sucks. "Rhetoric Of The Supermen", it's followup, strikes as much more impressive and comprehensible work, at least in comparison to the "Triumph Of The Will" (perhaps, "Triumph Of The Marasmus" would be more appropriate title, huh?). So what is it, musically and lyrically, all about? Lyrically - Nitzschean philosophy raised to the absolute, musically - sheer bullshit, a cacophony based on delirious shrieking / squealing, depravedly programmed and depravedly executed collection of randomly picked out sounds of various origins. Thank you, but I already have enough with the third "song". All praise VORAK, all praise incomprehensibility, all praise migraine. (Herr Stalhammar)

WALHALLA
"Firereich"
Root'o'Evil Records
rating: 5 of 6
Whatta surprise! I almost hated the former work by this Finnish all-star band (featuring THY SERPENT, GLOOMY GRIM and SOULGRIND members), "War Over Nordland" demo (later re-released in the shape of a limited edition 7'EP by Root'o'Evil), however it seems like either my mind or WALHALLA has endured a unique kind of elaboration. Neither first song did bore me, nor the second one. Neither third, nor the fourth. Actually, right after the music was over, I turned it on again and again. "Firereich" features undoubtedly inimitable sort of harsh yet melodic and simultaneously violent thrash / black metal - but don't you dare to consider WALHALLA one more SODOM rip-offs. No, they aren't and will never be. This is just thrash, and this is just black. That's it, man. EXCELLENT. And yes, I love the songtitles, such as "Winterfuhrer" or "Battlefield Genesis"! (Herr Stalhammar)

WILLOW WISP
"The Building Up And Breaking Down Of Matter"
M.D.G. Records
rating: 6 of 6
Once I've reviewed "Her Von Welken Nachten" by DORNENREICH, I was twice as sure that no band of the same kind would ever cross my way… Man, I was wrong. The CD these guys made their debut with (back in 1997), definitely isn't the one to be ignored by all those who consider themselves open-minded. What if I'd define it as incredibly eclectic though no less incredibly well-thoughtout and structured, a supernatural mixture of ANCIENT, SADNESS, PINK FLOYD, VON, BLACK FUNERAL and latest works by KATATONIA…??? Could you ever imagine that such a unique mixture would come to life?! I couldn't. Until this shiny round thing fell into my hands. Actually, when I was listening to "The Building Up…", I didn't dig it. More likely I was wondering "hey, what the hell is going on here?!". This work is NOT the one you would get high on, once giving it a listen. Perhaps, the fifth time this CD is spinning in your stereo, is the moment you'll get into the music delivered by these US' weirdos. Otherwise, you'd just consider the CD, musically varying from serene yet sorrowful dark wave to rawest black metal, an utter nonsense.  For example, "The Hurting" sounds more like a cross between hard / gothic rock, a bit of psychedelia and bluesy rhythms, whilst "Sodomized By God" is a harsh piece of violent, true black metal (though still interpreted in a different way). When it comes to musicianship, I'd say it's astounding - and even though these guys aren't the best musicians around, they still ARE MUSICIANS, still ARE CREATORS. And man, the singer's so damn good, and it doesn't really matter if he sings in a "clean" voice or screams out few more blasphemies. Seems like WILLOW WISP contrived to develop a style of their own, don't you think so…?? (Herr Stalhammar)

WITCH-HUNT
"Souls Enshrouded Fire"
X-Rated Records, Inc.
rating: 5,5 of 6
Violent yet sublime mixture of death and black metal is what's coming your way, man. WITCH-HUNT's former effort, "Prophecies Of A Great Plague", appeared as quite worthy though still "far from being a masterpiece"-kind of stuff, representing rather impressive atmospheric black metal. Is it the same with this one? No. Not at all. Seems like there were two different bands putting out these works. At least, "Souls Enshrouded Fire" almost doesn't have anything in common with "Prophecies…", when it comes to musical aspect. Recorded at various locations - with GARDEN OF SHADOWS' and AURORA BOREALIS' own studios among 'em - this CD is executed in a surprisingly decent way, also being a bit similar to both bands I mentioned above. AURORA' harshness and technique mixed with GARDEN's sublimity, with a truly inimitable WITCH-HUNT's ambience and approach to music, "Souls…" appears as pretty innovative, or at least, original piece. Of course, drums could lower in the mix (everything's on the contrary when it comes to guitars), however one would always find a drawback if he wants to. Anyway, let me tell you this for one more time: "Souls Enshrouded Fire" isn't the kind of CD you easily forget about once giving it a listen. And with those breathtaking operatic vocals by Dawn Smith (RAIN FELL WITHIN (Mathias, why won't you sign 'em as well??????????)), it's definitely not the one to miss. A MUST. (Herr Stalhammar)
