ACID DEATH
"Random's Manifest"
Black Lotus Records
rating: 4 of 6
Yuck! The cover is utterly sick one, no
doubts! I like it, though… heh heh. Anyway, what about the music we have
here this time? Well, to be short, it's some kind of weird techno-death
metal, although (fortunately) it's far from being incomprehensible. Sometimes
getting rid of those "progressive" parts and thus switching to melodic
death metal ("In Sorrow"), sometimes close to insanity, "Random's Manifest"
appears as pretty diverse and versatile work, quite enjoyable I'd say (perhaps,
"splendid" would be fit here better, doncha think?). What's most strange,
this CD bears a resemblance of ROTTING CHRIST and alike bands' old days…
that special kind of spirit, y'know. It doesn't have anything to do with
black metal, though. (Herr Stalhammar)
ADVERSARY
"Forsaken"
Cursed Productions
rating: 3,5 of 6
I guess I'll have to say "sorry" for one
more time. Ray, I deeply respect you, however the latest work of yours
doesn't impress me at all. Yes, it's still that good ol' death metal, old-fashioned
death metal as some say. However, when it comes to me, I consider this
work rather boring, in spite of the fact "Forsaken" appears as pretty well
thoughtout piece with no visible drawbacks… but it's just a bit (and maybe
not even a bit) boring, you see. A couple of tracks, as well as that IMPETIGO's
"Boneyard" cover, sound fine, but that simply is not enough for me to give
this effort a higher mark. ADVERSARY is a worthy band, but only for the
ones considering themselves orthodox. (Herr Stalhammar)
ANDRALLS
"Massacre, Corruption, Destruction…"
self-released
rating: 5 of 6
"The king is dead, hail the king!" Hmm…
What about "OBITUARY is dead…" and so on, and so forth? At least, this
Brazilian quartet heavily reminds me of early works by OBITUARY, although
ANDRALLS contrived to come up with even more bewitching kind of stuff.
First of all, it's not that sludgy, simultaneously being more atmospheric
and exciting, perhaps due to the fact "Massacre…" features plenty of masterly
performed leads. And finally, when it comes to comparisons, ANDRALLS' possesses
somewhat thrashy sound, which also worthily differ 'em from those US dudes.
In general, "Massacre, Corruption, Destruction…" appears as a splendid
piece of death metal. At least, even if I can't say I got high on it, it's
definitely worth some 12-15$.

ANTROPOFAGUS
"No Waste Of Flesh"
Beyond… Productions
rating: 2 of 6
Perhaps, it's the worst CD I've reviewed
in a "death metal" section this time. Beyond… Productions have plenty of
worthy acts in their roster (such as HASTUR, DRASTIC and ASTRAY, for instance),
so I can't really figure out why did they have to sign this one. ANTROPOFAGUS'
"No Waste Of Flesh" appears as incredibly generic and typical sort of pathological
death / grind with poorly programmed (!!!!!!!!!!!!) drumset, as well as
rather messy music. Actually, I can't see a single point this CD should
be praised for. I sincerely hope it's the last death / grind act signed
by Beyond… Productions. Let them deal with what they're better familiar
with, i.e. black metal and dark ambient. (Herr Stalhammar)
BLOOD DUSTER
"Cunt"
Dr. Jim's Records
rating: 5 of 6
For the first time, I've heard about this
band almost three years ago, however this is the first CD of theirs I gave
a listen. Well, I guess "groove" is the word here. No, it's not some nu-metal,
more likely a groovy mixture of death metal and grindcore, spiced with
few country-alike and bluesy elements. At least, who else could name their
album as "Cunt"? By the way, check out the inlay to figure out what "cunt"
stands for, heh heh. It's not as sick (the music, not cunt) as f.ex. CHOKE,
instead being more or less a pro-done effort (at least, I couldn't cavil
at anything when it comes to sound execution and performance's technique).
Despite the harshness and brutality this CD is soaked with, it's still…
erh… let's say maniacally intelligent. Not some fucking noise, but music,
you see. All in all: highly recommended. And yes, when you'll play the
first song, rewind it and you'll find out that "Cunt" also has a hidden
track. (Herr Stalhammar)
BURIAL
"Enlightened With Pain"
ENTER SELF
"Awaken In Agony"
Lost Disciple Records
rating: 4 of 6
These are two brand new CDs brought forth
the light by US' Lost Disciple Records. Don't ask me why, but I decided
to compose some kind of a combined review this time. Ok, let's start with
BURIAL. This is just a splendid piece of US-styled death metal, unfortunately
not that memorable. Versatile and brutal as hell itself. As to ENTER SELF,
it's heavily reminiscent of "Domination" CD. Exactly, the one by MORBID
ANGEL. "Awaken In Agony" isn't a copycat-sort of CD, though. Both are brilliantly
executed and well performed, therefore it strikes as most death metal freaks
definitely will get high on it. It's not the same with me, however saying
I didn't like "Enlightened With Pain" or "Awaken In Agony" would be a severe
lie. (Herr Stalhammar)
CANNIBAL CORPSE
"Live Cannibalism"
Metal Blade Records
(provided by Fono Records)
rating: -
I've just listened to a couple of live
CDs, such as "Tokyo Warhearts" (CHILDREN OF BODOM) and few others, and
perhaps that's why I couldn't really get into this one. Coming with eighteen
tracks taken off various works by this legendary US combo, "Live Cannibalism"
convinces the listener with utter sincerity which strikes as one of it's
components, simply due to the fact nothing has been re-mixed or re-dubbed,
therefore our ears "behold" few drawbacks here and there… but isn't it
what should make this CD even more attractive? Probably. The problem is,
it lacks that inimitable live "spirit" I craved for, whilst giving "Live
Cannibalism" a listen. Yes, it will please most of CANNIBAL CORPSE diehard
(and not only diehard) fans, however, despite the fact I DO consider myself
a fan of this act, this effort left me cold. Everything's ok, the sound
is nearly top-notch, the musicianship (besides those drawbacks I've mentioned
above) is stunning as well… but… Nevertheless, "Live Cannibalism" still
is the best live CD I checked out this year (2001).
If you can't find this CD being sold at
the music store nearby but nevertheless still interested in purchasing
it, email Fono Records at <metal@fono.ru>
or check out their official website at <www.fono.ru>
(this concerns only those who reside in Russia and CIS States, though).

CENTURION
"Hyper Martyrium"
Scarlet Records
rating: 5 of 6
Hey, this is definitely not the kind of
stuff I expected to hear putting "Hyper Martyrium" in my stereo! I thought
it would be some kind of old-fashioned "leather hero metal", however… CENTURION's
style may be humbly described as, yes, old-fashioned though simultaneously
modernized heavy metal similar to JUDAS PRIEST (NOT "Jugulator"!), with…
death metal-alike growling added! Strange, indeed. But no less intriguing!
Highly recommended. (Herr Stalhammar)
CORAM LETHE
"Reminiscence"
self-released
rating: 6 of 6
Well, I had some tough time reviewing this
CD, believe me. So, what to start with? Ok, it's the appearance, of course.
Taking into account the fact "Reminiscence" was released on their own,
it looks pretty astounding, so to say. And musically… Oh, starting with
a tremendous intro made with percussion, it later develops into something
I'd define as thrashy techno-death metal, surprisingly reminding me a lot
of AT THE GATES. Or more likely, just a metal fusion - just give a listen
to that "Your God Also Cries" featuring jazzy and few blues-alike disseminations,
emphasized bass lines and incredibly well-crafted drum tracks. Vocals are
harsh, even a bit black metallish, as to the atmosphere these guys managed
to force on "Reminiscence"… well, let me finish this review here, since
the ambiences this CD comes are doubtlessly indescribable. Truly a good
substitute for the gods which have wimpled out recently… yeah, it's SADIST
what I'm talking about. As to CORAM LETHE… Well, this is simply a unique
band. Labels, you'd better watch out, for the new star is born.

DARK SECRET
"The Frozen Memories"
self-released
rating: 4 of 6
One more of a kind… And one more… And yet
one more… And here it comes again… Oops, sorry. Seems like I'm just a bit
speechless. But that won't last for long, believe me. Whoopla, I'm capable
of expressing myself appropriately again. Thanks god in hell. Let him burn
for eternity. This doesn't concern Italy's DARK SECRET, though. As I already
said, this is "one more of a kind", i.e. melodic death metal heavily influenced
by the Swedish school, but still with a bit different approach, mainly
because of the vocal department (semi-growling instead of pseudo-blackish
vokills). Quite enjoyable and doubtlessly impressive at times, but nothing
outstanding. This is definitely the kind of work which has been well thoughtout
and crafted with love, but sorry guys, it doesn't impress me the way it
could impress you. Nevertheless, a good CD.

DEMONICON
"Condemned Creation"
Root 'o' Evil Records
rating: 5 of 6
Strange. I always thought that Root 'o'
Evil appears as a strictly black metal label (with few exceptions, such
as having IMPALER in their roster, for instance), therefore it's obvious
that I prepared myself for a good dose of black metal playing this CD.
Well… It is NOT black metal, even though atmospherically it's no less darker.
Coming with a fabulous appearance (those grey colors / shades make it look
even gloomier), DEMONICON deliver dark death metal with varied tempos,
hellishly brutal and hauntingly sick, sometimes reminding of DEICIDE a
bit (check out "The Burning Starts Again" as well as "Exile Ingrown" and
try to figure out if I'm right or wrong), though still far from being someone's
worthless clone. What else… "Condemned Creation" has been magnificently
executed, and even though the album is a pretty lengthy one, it doesn't
get boring due to it's versatility. The drumming is beyond any critics,
appearing courtesy of THEATRE OF THE MACABRE's drummer. Ok, and finally,
let me recommend you to pay a sensitive attention to "Exile Ingrown", with
it's acoustic pseudo-interludes and emphasized bass lines (almost a solo,
you see). A hell of an album, indeed! (Herr Stalhammar)
DISGORGE
"Chronic Corpora Infest"
American Line Productions
rating: 5 of 6
Are you getting sick while watching horror
movies with blood and gore splattered all around? Then you MUST NOT look
at this CD, at least it's appearance. Yuck! I didn't know that there's
so much bloody shit inside of our organisms. Now I know - thanks to DISGORGE.
Don't confuse 'em with the US' namesakes; despite that those American weirdos
are enough sick to make sick themselves, Mexico's DISGORGE have gone way
more far on the path to the utter repulsion. The cover"art" gives you first
impression, song titles (such as "Stygmatodermuropyanphrosism On Impetiginose
Urogenism") - the second one. And then… Well, then we have gore grind at
it's best. What's most strange, it's (sickly) different from most of bands
"performing" the same kind of stuff. So what's the difference? I hope you
already made a guess. A right one. (Herr Stalhammar)
DISGORGE
"Forensick"
Repulse Records
rating: 6 of 6
Hey, I've just recovered from listening
to "Chronic Corpora Infest", and here they come again, with a new blast,
this time even more dreadful one. This is fucking SICK, man!!! Extremely
extreme kind of gore / grind, y'know. It's far more than just a grindcore,
this is DISGORGE, one of the sickest bands around (and obviously definitely
much better if we'd compare 'em to their US' namesakes). Musically a bit
more complex than "Chronic…", sometimes reaching the speed of light, being
somewhat chaotic yet well thoughtout structurally (some of these structures
appear as totally insane, though. Just check out "Depths Carmesi"), it's
what DISGORGE is all about. Adding inhuman growling, weird drumming as
well as few other aspects, such as horrifying chants "Crevice Flux Warts"
starts with, and an anxious outro, which force even grimmer sort of atmosphere,
we get the whole picture, don't we? A MUST FOR ALL OF YOU, FUCKING WEIRDOS!
(Herr Stalhammar)
EMBOLISM
"… And We All Hate Ourselves"
Erebos Productions
rating: 4 of 6
Grindcore. For one more time, grindcore
is what I have to tell you all about, boys and girls. Yes, it hurts. Wanna
know what's hemorrhage is all about? Wanna know what is it alike, to have
an axe swirled into the very depths of your fiercely bleeding asshole?
Well, then you'll have to get yourselves acquainted with calm, polite and
undoubtedly friendly Slovak guys from a certain band going by the name
"Embolism". They'll tell ya. They'll tell ya everything to make you vomit
up your own bowels. Yes, this is grindcore, a bit muddy, a bit similar
to Germany's NYCTOPHOBIC - as violent, as hateful, as all-devouring. It's
incredibly less sick in comparison to f.ex. Mexico's DISGORGE though, that's
why the mark isn't the highest one. (Herr Stalhammar)
EVOKE
"The Fury Written"
System Shock
rating: 5,5 of 6
First we have excitingly performed, somewhat
even majestic kind of intro (the keyboard-played, of course), and then…
Oh holy shit, EVOKE strikes as one of the best if not the best UK-based
death metal act I've heard for centuries! Ultra-blasting at times, turning
to mid-paced structures as well, excellently performed and executed, "The
Fury Written" even delivers certain kind of originality hidden in between.
I don't have enough words (oh, what a poor being human is!) to describe
this work properly - the only thing I know for sure: this CD definitely
is the one to get hands on! (Herr Stalhammar)
EXIDIA
"From The Deep"
self-released
rating: 4 of 6
Aren't there too many CDs released independently
nowadays? Sometimes, it seems to be rather surprising when you get more
and more self-financed and self-released items which strike as doubtlessly
stunning works… however, not this time. This is death metal. Death metal
and nothing else. Digitally executed and well performed, featuring sudden
interruptions in the shape of ultra-short pseudo-leads and reminiscences
of latest efforts brought forth the light by DEICIDE. The only thing I
can't really get into, is why the hell they had to release this one, only
a 12-minute long piece??? Wouldn't it be better, to come up with at least
a bit more lengthy CD… oh ok!, MCD?? Anyway, this is a good MCD bereft
by a worthy band.

GALLERY OF DARKNESS
"Sea Of Silence"
self-released
rating: 5 of 6
An interesting piece it is. At least, Germany's
GALLERY OF DARKNESS doesn't appear as yet one more poor man's DEICIDE or
whatever. GALLERY OF DARKNESS is GALLERY OF DARKNESS, you see. Their approach
to death metal is a bit different from the common schemes of the genre,
and would anyone say it's a drawback or a failure? Definitely not. This
relatively young foursome deliver fast-paced though variable death metal
(almost grind, actually) slightly spiced with an aura of mysticism, perhaps
due to few synth lines put in here and there. Furthermore, bewitching leads
is what we have here too, and what makes this band different from the ugly
faceless mass of nowadays' "fuck originality / fuck innovations / fuck
compositional talent / fuck everything but idiocy" death metal slogan.
I guess, I don't have to admit that both musicianship and execution are
far above average. Do yourself a favour and purchase "Sea Of Silence" -
you won't be disappointed.

GLACIAL FEAR
"Fetish Parade"
Negatron Records
rating: 5 of 6
Italy's Negatrond Recs appears as a neophyte
label when it comes to metal scene worldwide, although they've already
succeeded in releasing at least a couple of groundbreaking CDs. Such as
this one, for instance. If I'm not mistaken, "Fetish Parade" is a second
full-length effort by GLACIAL FEAR, one of the best death / thrash metal
bands ever emerging from the Roman empire, and it's undoubtedly a stunning
one. Wanna know what kind of stuff they deliver? Well, if VOIVOD played
death metal keeping all their trademarks, they would sound like GLACIAL
FEAR. It's harsh yet harmonic, melodious yet brutal, depraved yet bewitching
sort of music, definitely not for orthodox individuals - however, shame
on you if you still didn't purchase this CD. It's really difficult to say
anything comprehensible in addition to the afore-cited words of mine, so
let's better stop here. All in all, highly recommended.

GROINCHURN
"Already Dead"
Happy Hamster Records
rating: 4,5 of 6
Death / grind from SAR?! Wow, whatta surprise!
However, I was really embarrassed when I saw how this CDS looks like -
twice as smaller than usual CD. But enough with introductions, let's better
discuss the musical canvas. Ok, what we have here is undoubtedly mature
and totally pro- approach to music, and even though songs aren't really
different from each other, "Already Dead" is being perceived as pretty
impressive piece (with an exception for "Toad-Lee" track which is a complete
grind / crust failure). This one also features a couple of live tracks
(sounding even more violent than studio tracks) which prove that GROINCHURN
definitely is the kind of band to be listened to, live. I'd definitely
like to give a listen to "Fink", their full-length offering (out in 1998
under the banners of Morbid Records). Honestly speaking, I didn't really
expect to give a listen to such an enrapturing work coming from SAR!
P.S. What I don't really like, are the
song titles such as "Satan Spawn, The Idiots" or "Let's Put The Fun Back
Into Fundamentalists", y'know. (Herr Stalhammar)
HER ENCHANTMENT
"Sagas"
Polar Bear Records
rating: 3,5 of 6
What would you expect from the band choosing
such a moniker? Yep, I also thought it would be regular cheesy pseudo-doom
with a certain chick behind the microphone. Actually, it's not really far
from being truth, since we DO have a female singer here - however, it strikes
as she's responsible only for backing vocals (and few leading ones, if
you want me to be utterly honest). And what we have here, is… No, it's
not even doom / death sort of stuff. More likely, a mixture of relentless
death and black metal. Surprised? So was I. But hey, what else should I
say after giving a listen to "Prodigiously Doleful" or "The Gate Keeper"?!
These pieces simply shred your ears (and I don't really know whether it's
good or bad). Everything seems to ok here, at least at the first look /
listen. Beautiful digipack, excellent sound execution and splendid musicianship.
BUT. Compositional structures is what I'd cavil at, when it comes to "Sagas".
This CD simply sounds incomplete, and what's more, it lacks complexity.
You just can't wait when it ends today, and wish if it could be more comprehensible
tomorrow. Got the point, huh? I'm really sorry guys, but I expected much
more well crafted effort. (Herr Stalhammar)
HORRID
"Blasphemic Creatures"
Behind The Mask Productions
rating: 6 of 6
Being similar to AMORPHIS ("The Karelian
Isthmus"-era) and a bit to Swedish death metal school, this MCD is a pretty
diversified piece thus appearing the one far from being boring or whatever.
Vocals (growling, of course) fit "Blasphemic Creatures" just perfectly
- in fact, there aren't too much men born to be death metal singers, whilst
this guy seems to be one of those whose destination is to become a part
of DM act. All the harmonies are nearly perfectly thoughtout, supplemented
with thick sound as well as easily distinguishable musical canvas, a bit
nostalgic yet still being an offering of modern day's realities, these
four songs appear as a perfect example of what is perfect death metal (sorry
for the pun). Can't wait to give a listen to their full-length CD!

ILLDISPOSED
"Retro"
Diehard Music
rating: -
There's been quite a while since the world
beheld one of the finest Denmark's death metal bands unleashing their latest
effort. Actually, almost three years. More than enough to start impatiently
awaiting their newest offering. Well, here it is - but woe to you, inhabitants
of the Earth, for this CD doesn't feature any songs composed by ILLDISPOSED.
"Retro" appears as a kinda retrospective effort, featuring DARKTHRONE,
CARCASS, INFERNAL MAJESTY, PARADISE LOST, VENOM, AUTOPSY, DEATH, PESTILENCE,
MOTORHEAD, OBITUARY and AC / DC (!!!) tunes interpreted by Bo Summer and
co. Well, this is definitely not the kind of release we're used to give
a listen these grim and snowy nights (the review has been written in early
March 2001 - ED). Some of the covers are definitely a success (such as
CARCASS' "Reek Of Putrefaction", AC / DC's "Beating Around The Bush" and
PESTILENCE's "Out Of The Body"), some are pretty uninteresting due to the
fact they sound too close to the original tunes (DARKTHRONE's "Cromlech",
for instance). All in all, listening to this CD undoubtedly appears as
an enjoyable experience, however I'd prefer to give a listen to the album
of their own. (Herr Stalhammar)
IMMORTAL CRINGE
"Undying Fear"
Demolition Records
rating: 1 of 6
Despite that I deeply respect UK's Demolition
Records, this one definitely doesn't deserve a better mark. Musically being
quite ok (kinda techno-death metal in the vein of latest works by ATHEIST),
this CD is incredibly disgusting when it comes to atmosphere (or more likely,
it's absence) and uniquely loathsome voice, sort of hardcorish crap, y'know.
Believe me or not, but I'm going to flush this CD down the toilet right
after I've finished this review. Even ANTROPOFAGUS sounds millions times
better than the utter crap going by the name of IMMORTAL CRINGE. (Herr
Stalhammar)
INCANTATION
"The Infernal Storm"
Relapse Records
rating: 4,5 of 6
A huge "hail to thee!" goes out to Mr.
John McEntee for submitting me a burned copy of "The Infernal Storm" -
that's what I call an "underground-devoted" band. It's always a pleasure
to see the band staying true to their roots, when it comes to both music
and audience. Anyway, what the hell of an experience do we have to
endure this time? Surprisingly or not, this is INCANTATION. A bit sludgy,
unholy death / doom (?!) metal, inimitably conceived and performed by one
of the best true death metal acts out there. (Herr Stalhammar)
INTERNAL SUFFERING
"Supreme Knowledge Domain"
Repulse Records
rating: 4 of 6
This CD would be ok, if it lasted for 15
minutes (instead of half an hour). Brutal as fuck, although somewhat boring,
y'know. The structures "Supreme Knowledge Domain" is based on, are too
similar to each other, even though such tracks as "Threshold Into The Unknown"
offer some diversity (varying from slow to mid-tempo, simultaneously heavily
reminding of DEEDS OF FLESH as well as US' school death metal). Judging
by the song titles, I expected this CD to be a black metal one (just like
in case with DEMONICON, y'know), however it turned out pretty different,
being nothing more but a fast-paced death / grind. Vocals and drum tracks
(even if not that technical) definitely are not of the human origin, as
well as this work in the whole. If they'd just diversify it a bit… Nevertheless,
a good debut for a Colombian (!) band. (Herr Stalhammar)
KRABATHOR
"Unfortunately Dead"
System Shock
rating: 6 of 6
Most probably, this is the best work by
KRABATHOR so far. At least, while none of their former efforts really excited
me, I love this one. I'm strongly convinced that all of you are already
familiar with this band, hence I doubt if I have to describe each single
detail regarding "Unfortunately Dead", however… Just like in case with
MERCYLESS, this is an amalgamation of death and thrash metal, although
these bands don't have anything in common. Really. Whilst MERCYLESS make
emphasis on thrash, KRABATHOR do everything on the contrary, you see. Besides
that, "Unfortunately Dead" doesn't feature any trace of synths or whatever
- with one and only exception… but later about that. What surprised me
most of all, is that we could obviously draw many parallels between nowadays'
KRABATHOR… and MORBID ANGEL. No, they aren't copycats or anything like
that, however if one would ever give a listen to this CD, he could easily
say "hey man, I definitely know where these guys draw their inspiration
from!". And by the way, concerning keyboards… What about recalling "Hatework",
a genius tune by Trey and co.? Well, whatta surprise, here we have "Death
Through The Centuries" - a stunning (8-minute!) composition spiced with
anxious synth-lines. Anyway, I believe I've muddled you a bit; therefore:
despite all these comparisons, KRABATHOR still stays an excellent band,
delivering music OF THEIR OWN. And yes, they're the best death metal combo
Czech Republic ever bereft, no doubts. (Herr Stalhammar)
LOVE HISTORY
"Anasazi"
The End Records
rating: 5,5 of 6
Formerly it was Holy Records. Now it's
The End. This relatively newborn label keeps highest standard when it comes
to all the CDs they release - at least, I can't recall any failure. Time
passes by, the idols fall in order to be later resurrected. Holy isn't
the same as it was before, however lucky us, now we have The End. "Anasazi"
is yet one more groundbreaking CD brought forth the light by Andreas, Sergey
and co., no less complicated, no less controversial than f.ex. "Apollo
Ends" by SCULPTURED. Basically it's so-called "progressive death metal"
(what a definition!), spiced with unbelievably enormous number of "alien"
elements. Weird arrangements, growls and almost operatic male & female
voices, masterly structured compositions, originality and innovations.
LOVE HISTORY deliver less insane musical canvas than the abovementioned
weirdos (SCULPTURED), and they obviously gain by it without losing the
"for open-minded only" status. And yes, it's CZECH. Czech to the core.
Almost reaching the genius of MASTER'S HAMMER at times. "Lost"… "Sown"…
"Spiritual"… Ah, these are pure jewels! Nothing more, nothing less. In
fact… why should I add anything? Perhaps only the slogan similar to "this
CD will definitely appeal to all those who seek Art in the shape of music
- and not the contrary". (Herr Stalhammar)
MERCYLESS
"Sure To Be Pure"
System Shock
rating: 5 of 6
Since I just can't stand Islam, I was positively
surprised discovering that these French weirdos have the same point of
view - at least, that's what I figured out getting myself acquainted with
the title track's lyrical line. But lyrics isn't what we're talking about
here, right? So, the music. Well, honestly speaking, "Sure To Be Pure"
appears as a much more impressive effort if one would compare it to "Cold",
the former work by MERCYLESS. Stylistically this is almost a unique mixture
of atmospheric thrash (!) and death metal; moreover, let me dare to state
that MERCYLESS is the best French metal act of this kind. "Sure…" is not
so dull and inexpressive as "Cold" was, being much more comprehensible,
enigmatic and intriguing. Each song gets stuck in your mind at least for
a while, and that's already a good reason to add this CD to the collection
of yours, don't you think so? "Obedience" is the one I like most off this
CD - give this tune a listen and I guess you won't be capable of anything
but agreeing with my judgement. There's one thing I can't really get into,
though. If they're French, why did they have to compose a song in Spanish
("La Boca Amarga")? Anyway, this is a hell of an album. (Herr Stalhammar)
MORBID ANGEL
"Gateways To Annihilation"
Earache Music
rating: 6 of 6
Actually, I've never been a huge fan of
this legendary band - and even if I gave their former work, "Formulas Fatal
To The Flesh", a good mark, I never considered it a masterpiece or at least
anything close to such a description. Well, now I DO consider MORBID ANGEL
a unique band. Now I DO consider them an inalienable part of death metal
elite; probably even the beings who stand high above rather ephemeral notion
of "elite". They don't have to prove anything, to say or to add anything
- music speaks for themselves, and it's the most stunning sort of language
I've ever heard. Despite that "Gateways To Annihilation" is almost twice
as slower in comparison to f.ex. "Domination" or "Formulas…", this CD is
thousand times more brutal and mind-devouring. Structurally it's just perfect.
Every riff, every kind of ambience, every lead, every composition is marked
with the blend of "perfection". And do I really have to say anything else,
if all of you already know that no one would ever manage to comprise a
lineup of no less than genius musicians and composers? MORBID ANGEL DID
manage, though. This is a masterpiece, and I doubt if anyone anywhere will
ever reach the level this album's placed itself at. (Herr Stalhammar)
NOMENMORTIS
"How I Learn To Bleed… For The Things I
Wish To Forget"
Jackhammer Music
rating: 5,5 of 6
Too bad that Japan's Jackhammer Music appears
as a rip-off label, since Slovakia's NOMENMORTIS definitely deserves a
better deal. What a pity. I mean, I doubt if this band will be capable
of going on, whilst keeping on collaborating with those Japanese shitheads.
As to the music this CD comes with, it's one of the most impressive pieces
I've heard for a while. Similar to AMORBITAL a bit, though. Death metal
of their own, spiced with a special aura of mysticism and doubtless originality
as well as unquestionable professionally when it comes to overall musicianship.
Honestly speaking, I believe that Eastern Europe's DM scene has much more
potential in comparison to f.ex. American one, and NOMEN MORTIS is the
perfect example. (Herr Stalhammar)
OBLITERATE
"The Feelings"
Erebos Productions
rating: 2 of 6
This is a worthless piece. Too bad, because
neither can I cavil at sound execution, nor would I say these guys don't
have enough skills to perform death metal the enjoyable way. It's just
too goddamn unmemorable, artificial and generic - therefore, boring. When
it comes to Erebos' bands, I definitely prefer SUFFOCATE, at least the
latter act delivers enough intriguing sort of music. (Herr Stalhammar)
PRIMAL DAWN
"Primal Dawn"
No Salvation
rating: 4 of 6
Irish death metal…??? Oops. I always thought
these Celts are capable of creating only their own unique form of folk-spiced
black metal (CRUACHAN, PRIMORDIAL, GEASA), however it's not what we have
to deal with this time. This (unfortunately rather poorly designed) MCD
offers us four tracks of raw yet well crafted and well executed melodic
death metal, bearing few reminiscences of BM as well. I truly appreciate
the variety of vocals offered (from harsh growling, through black metal-alike
shrieks, to "clean" voice), and the same goes for musical "accompaniment".
However, I wouldn't say that PRIMAL DAWN is a synonym for 'innovative',
'original', or "at least" 'breathtaking'… therefore, only '4' out of '6'.

PROFANITY
"Slaughtering Thoughts"
Cudgel Agency
rating: 6 of 6
Too much death metal this time, don't you
think? More likely, too much STUNNING death metal this time. Well, Germany's
Cudgel Agency seems to be one of the most successful labels among the neophyte
ones. Both DAMNATION's "Resist" and "Redemption" by TEARS OF DECAY (CUD007
and CUD006) turned out as brilliant pieces, the same with this one. Strangely,
but it seems like it had to be released BEFORE "Resist" and "Redemption",
since it carries #5 (CUD005), but that's not really important afterall.
The music IS important. And it's (nearly?) perfect when it comes to PROFANITY.
Their former work, "Shadows To Fall", already was a brilliant CD, however
"Slaughtering Thoughts" is thousand times better. I still can't understand
who this trio (!) contrive to deliver such a fucking killer stuff. The
musicianship is beyond any critics (well… not exactly. Armin's drumming
is not only beyond any critics. It's genius), the same goes for songwriting
abilities as well as sound execution. Moreover, you can easily say "hey
man, it's PROFANITY!" once you hear any song off "Slaughtering Thoughts".
A MUST!

PSYCHOMANCER
"(si-ko-man-sur)"
Cursed Productions
rating: 5 of 6
Wondering what the hell does "si-ko-man-sur"
stand for? So did I. Everything is utterly simple, though. Just this is
the way we should spell the band's name. And yes, once again, it's old-fashioned
death metal, this time much more impressive than the one performed by ADVERSARY.
Coming with only six (!) pretty long tunes, this CD appears as quite excellent
work, featuring breathtaking leads and astounding passages, although I
wouldn't say it's a masterpiece… and in the same time, it's one of the
best efforts ever released by Cursed Productions. Get it if you get high
on (early) ALTAR, ADVERSARY and others of that ilk. I dig it. (Herr Stalhammar)
PSYCROPTIC
"The Isle Of Disenchantment"
self-released
rating: 4 of 6
Claiming that this effort appears as "dark
and extreme death metal which incorporates elements of grind and black
metal", these guys are definitely mistaken. At least, I couldn't find any
trace of black metal when it comes to "The Isle Of Disenchantment". This
is where we might compare 'em to Canada's BLOOD OF CHRIST, you see. Mystically
blended mixture of DEEDS OF FLESH… and MARDUK - if they played death metal,
of course. Despite the young age of these chaps (one more similarity with
BLOOD OF CHRIST!) and low budget, they nevertheless contrived to offer
rather enjoyable recording, well executed and no less well structured,
although I fear that, if "The Isle Of Disenchantment" lasted for more than
40 minutes, it would be boring as hell. What doubtlessly makes 'em to stand
against the background of the whole death metal community, is the lyrical
canvas, divided into some kind of short stories, definitely exciting ones.
Well… nice for a debut, hence I expect that the future works of theirs
would be astounding. At least, I hope so. Contact 'em at <psycroptic@hotmail.com>.

QUO VADIS
"Day Into Night"
Hypnotic Records
rating: 6 of 6
I hate this one, and I love this one. You
know, first I wanted to rate "Day Into Night" with '2' out of '6', however,
as you see, I failed to drag it into shit. Being top-notch kind of recording
when it comes to musicianship and sound execution, "Day Into Night" stands
quite far from we usually define as "original", being very much alike latest
works by CARCASS (such as "Heartwork" and "Swansong"). However… CARCASS
is no more, so why not, afterall?! Amazingly technical, though still surprisingly
sincere and, whoa!, atmospheric, "Day Into Night" appears as melodic and
groovy yet still harsh death metal effort - maybe even more versatile than
most exciting efforts CARCASS managed to put out so far. If you don't really
care about originality, "Day Into Night" will make your ears orgasmatically
bleed. Highly recommended. (Herr Stalhammar)
SANCTIMONY
"Eternal Suffering"
Father Production
rating: 5 of 6
Unholy (and therefore, anti-christian)
death metal at it's best. A Latvian band, by the way. Nothing more to say,
except for marking out the last track, "Sanctimony Orchestra - Satan Fallus",
which is definitely a strange one. (Herr Stalhammar)
SIX FEET UNDER
"Graveyard Classics"
Metal Blade Records
(provided by Fono Records)
rating: -
If I'm not mistaken (and I still seem to
be of sound mind, don't I?), this is already the second tribute CD of the
new kind which found it's way to my mailbox lately. Ok, ILLDISPOSED's "Retro"
was a good one, so is "Graveyard Classics". BLACK SABBATH's "Sweet Leaf",
SEX PISTOLS' "Stepping Stone", ACCEPT's "Son Of A Bitch", DEEP PURPLE's
"Smoke On The Water" and Jimi Hendrix's "Purple Haze" definitely appear
as killer interpretations, whilst others are not bad, though still far
from being stuck in my mind for at least more than an hour. Good band,
good CD, but I'd prefer to listen to the songs of their own. I just kinda
tired of various cover versions… Too much of this crap nowadays. I'm strongly
convinced no one would ever say this ONE is crap, though. CANNIBAL CORPSE

STALWART
"Jerk"
Fono Productions
rating: 6 of 6
This CD was some kind of a gift - and man,
I just love such gifts! How could I ever expect that neophyte St.Petersburg's
band would come up with such a killer death metal…? STALWART definitely
are one of the most original and innovative acts within the bounds of this
genre. These guys undoubtedly only gain by adding few keyboards here and
there, as well as surprisingly well-done male "clean" voices; however brutal
though somewhat psychedelic death metal still is what "Jerk" represents.
Unbelievably tight performance and stunning production only make this CD
a step closer to perfection… I only hope that "Jerk" isn't the last work
STALWART is going to deliver.

SUFFOCATE
"Lustforheaven"
Erebos Productions
rating: 4,5 of 6
Have you ever been imprisoned and then
suddenly released; released when your very last hope is gone? I haven't,
but I guess the one who had, should have the same kind of sensations after
giving a listen to OBLITERATE - and then having latest SUFFOCATE's CD spinning
in his stereo. This is also death / grind, however this time it's slightly
spiced with even a bit controversial elements borrowed from other styles,
such as hardcore for instance. "Lustforheaven" (with such a "lust for heaven",
you guys, definitely won't get your place there) appears as a very well
crafted, as well as splendidly executed piece of decent death metal, exciting
and recognizable. I wish all the band at Erebos had the same approach to
music SUFFOCATE have. (Herr Stalhammar)
TESSARACT
"End Of Depression"
D.A.C. Productions
rating: 3 of 6
TESSARACT appears as quite worthy act,
emerging from Ukraine, although this MC just makes me bored. Nothing more,
nothing less, y'know. Swedish-styled death metal, 99% mid-paced and thus
boring. You see, this tape simply lacks any kind of what could be named
with notions of "intriguing" or "exciting" and alike… (Herr Stalhammar)
TORTURE SQUAD
"Asylum Of Shadows"
Destroyer Records
rating: 5 of 6
Brazil isn't really well-known for begetting
a huge number of death ( / black) metal acts, and perhaps that was the
reason explaining my astonishment when I've this CD in my mail and gave
it a listen. This is hell of an album, man! Incredibly tightly performed,
versatile anti-christian death metal slightly spiced with black metallish
"trademarks" (such as second vocal lines, for instance), this is what we
have here. Not really original (well, originality isn't such a common thing
nowadays, anyway), similar to US' HATRED and SINISTER, this is, despite
the aforesaid, the band which undoubtedly deserves out attention. You see,
I can't say it totally blew me away, however does it necessarily mean that
"Asylum…" isn't worth checking out?!

TORTURE SQUAD
"Shivering"
Destroyer Records
rating: 6 of 6
Whoooooaaa! THIS ONE blew me away, that's
for sure!!! Cristiano (guitars) was enough kind to submit me the CD they've
made their debut with, back in 1996, and unfortunately I have to admit
that "Shivering" is thousand times better than "Asylum Of Shadows". This
time more black metallish (well, actually it IS black metal… or does it
just seem to me?) especially when it comes to vocal department, more mid-paced
(sometimes even slow) and hauntingly atmospheric, it's simultaneously better
and worse than "Asylum Of Shadows", however the "better" aspects inevitably
prevail. Furthermore, "Shivering" appears as incredibly thousand times
more grim in comparison to TORTURE SQUAD's second offering. Actually, it's
not that common to get yourself acquainted with the death metal band forcing
such an atmosphere (check out the title track as well as "Darkness Hides
The Light"). And even though, I've already compared 'em to a couple of
bands (let it be SEPULTURA's "Schizophrenia" this time, ok?), don't get
me wrong, since TORTURE SQUAD undoubtedly possess a sound of theirs. I
wish they'd get a record deal with a decent label soon! (Herr Stalhammar)
UNBOUND
"… In Infinity"
Premium Records
rating: 5 of 6
Surprisingly a splendid CD from this newborn
Germany's combo. Firstly I considered 'em a pure death metal act, however
as it became obvious later, UNBOUND is not your regular CANNIBAL CORPSE-copycat.
These guys managed to come up with a truly versatile effort, combining
influences borrowed from death and doom metal, hardcore and so-called "alternative"
music. And as a result, we have undoubtedly diverse and intriguing shiny
round piece a.k.a. CD, representing somewhat innovative (although not THAT
MUCH innovative, actually…) sort of stuff.. (Herr Stalhammar)
VADER
"Litany"
Metal Blade Records
rating: 6 of 6
Holy shit! How a merely human being can
rape the drumkit with such a precise technique at such an incredible speed?!
Most likely, VADER's Doc is one of the best drummers worldwide, at least
at the moment. And the rest of the band… Hey, this is VADER! How could
you expect anything less brutal, less technical, less breathtaking, less
original and less atmospheric from this legendary Polish combo??! "Litany"
is the best work they've came up so far, no doubts. This is what true death
metal should be, and this is how it should sound alike. Truly a MASTERPIECE.
(Herr Stalhammar)
VOMITORY
"Revelation Nausea"
Metal Blade Records
(provided by Fono Records)
rating: 6 of 6
Astounding. Magnificent. Stunning. Fabulous.
Exciting. Intriguing. Enrapturing. Fascinating. Splendid. Bewitching. SIMPLY
FUCKING KILLER. Oh no, we have yet one more death metal masterpiece here!
Can you believe it?! Yes, this genre definitely endures some kind of revival
nowadays, but I still can't believe that there's ENORMOUS, yes ENORMOUS!,
number of bands capable of coming up with truly groundbreaking works. VOMITORY
is one of a kind, though. These Swedes are no newcomers, and it's easily
recognizable once you play at least one of the tunes off "Revelation Nausea".
I confess, I loved their former efforts, but this one literally blew me
away. Raw death metal but simultaneously uniquely structured, thus being
perceived as a well thoughtout and facing no stylistic compromises at the
same time, keeping your attention all the way through, not necessarily
original but doubtlessly impressive and (once again) recognizable. If you
consider yourself a metal advocate, you simply don't have a right to miss
this masterpiece of artistic brutality. If "Opium Empire" by WICKED INNOCENCE
was the best DM album in November 2000, "Revelation Nausea" definitely
is the best death metal CD I've got myself acquainted THIS month (April
2001).
If you can't find this CD being sold at
the music store nearby but nevertheless still interested in purchasing
it, email Fono Records at <metal@fono.ru>
or check out their official website at <www.fono.ru>

WICKED INNOCENCE
"Opium Empire"
SIS Records
rating: 6 of 6
Probably, "Opium Empire" is the best work
I've heard this month (November 2000 - ED); when it comes to death metal,
of course. DM has lost almost all of it's recognizable brutality and relentless
approach to music (as well as everything else) turning into some hippy
crap instead - however, it's not what you should expect from WICKED INNOCENCE.
Hailing from the "hallowed" land of mormons (the State of Utah), these
dudes contrived to create the most exciting death metal effort you would
ever have a chance to listen to these years… At least when it comes to
neophyte bands; even though, I wouldn't call WICKED INNOCENCE is their
third album so far (if I'm not mistaken, of course). Featuring versatile
yet incredibly brutal, and what's most important nearly 100% original (!!!!)
music, simultaneously delivering incredibly skillful performance (you have
to check out the drumming, man!), this quartet is a band to watch out!
A MUST.

YATTERING
"Murder's Concept"
Season Of Mist
rating: 6 of 6
Goddammit, what the hell is it?! Most of
the albums reviewed in a "death metal" section get highest marks! So does
this one - simply because I couldn't rate "Murder's Concept" with a mark
less than '6' out of '6'. Why? Well, Polish dudes were always known for
delivering outstanding death metal (actually Poland's metal scene is one
of the best in the world, to be honest), while YATTERING appears as a perfect
example to that. Depravedly grinding yet diversified and well thoughtout,
brutal as hell itself however still wickedly intelligent (?!), to put in
short - this CD is a killer. Precise technique and stunning sound execution,
as well as breathtaking riffing and Zabek's outstanding drumming make "Murder's
Concept" a must to have album. (Herr Stalhammar)
