DOOM / GOTHIC / DARK WAVE

7TH HEAVEN
"Faces Time Replaces"
NTD Records
rating: 6 of 6
Actually I thought it would be death metal. Man, I was wrong! I just confused 7TH HEAVEN with UK's death metal act which seems to have the same moniker. Doesn't really matter, afterall. So this is NOT death metal. More likely, it's a brilliant mixture of gothic metal, dark wave, industrial and a bit heavy metal. Kinda US' answer to PARADISE LOST, y'know. These guys contrived to come up with a much more exciting work, though. At least, "Host" is nothing but a garbage in comparison to "Faces Time Replaces". Each track has it's own secret, each one is a jewel in a crown of superiority… Therefore I wasn't really surprised when someone told me they've made their appearance on MTV. These guys definitely deserve a huge success… while "Faces…" deserves to be purchased by every single man familiar with the notion of "self-esteem".

ABDULLAH
"Abdullah"
THE MUSHROOM RIVER BAND
"Music For The World Beyond"
MeteorCity
rating: 4,5 of 6
Here we have another dose of "the best stoner money can buy" from MeteorCity. Well, this label definitely succeeds in discovering various talents worldwide - and I guess it's pretty hard to find at least 10 bands in the world delivering splendid kind of stoner. Subjective? Yes. But who cares, anyway. B.t.w., despite that I decided to make this review combined, ABDULLAH is very different from THE MUSHROOM RIVER BAND, while THE MUSHROOM RIVER BAND is very different from ABDULLAH. The first ones are darker, also standing a bit more far from standard borders of stoner. First of all, the lyrical canvas definitely is a somber one (what about such songtitles as "Now Is The Winter", "Lucifer In Starlight", "The Black Ones", "Proverbs Of Hell" or "The Path To Enlightenment"?), while the music is no less somber. Oh well, maybe A BIT less somber. Rather sludgy, although "Abdullah" and "boredom" don't have anything in common. I truly like the vocalist: he really SINGS instead of bleating or copying Ozzy or whatever… And yes, the CD's appearance is a killer one, too. As to THE MUSHROOM RIVER BAND… Well, it's pure stoner rock with a singer borrowed from SPIRITUAL BEGGARS. Pretty nice, I'd say. Rather energetic and even nearly fascinating. Spice undoubtedly is a good singer, whilst the musicianship lacks any drawbacks - and the same goes for arrangements. Consequently we get a highest standard-stoner rock CD. Congratulations.

ADENOSINE-TRI-PHOSPHATE
"Deranged Angel"
self-released
rating: 6 of 6
Seems like I fell in love with this CD. That's no surprise though, since "Deranged Angel" appears as definitely stunning piece. Some kind of gothic / dark wave-alike stuff, rather serene although far from being commercial or whatever. Quite versatile, diversified and undoubtedly exciting all the way through, moving to territories of psychedelia here, and adding electronic, loops and similar sort of stuff there… All in all, both musicianship and sound execution are excellent, but what's most strange with this release, A.T.P. come from Japan, moreover - they're fronted by female singer! Well, it adds even more originality (besides the fact that a couple of tunes are sung in Japanese (!)), and furthermore, Taata's voice is more than charming. This girl definitely knows what the singing is all about. This is an outstanding work, thus making me wonder why the hell are they still unsigned. A MUST.

AFTERALL
"Dead Loss"
Music Avenue / Rokarola Records
rating: 5,5 of 6
Hhhuuuummm, tasty! These Belgians are no newcomers in the metal scene, however "Dead Loss" is the first CD by AFTERALL I had a chance to listen to. Well, it's rather excellent piece! Combining doom and heavy metal into one, adding few psychedelic and stoner-alike touches, this quintet managed to get definitely stunning work on the outcome. Even though, as I said, it's slightly spiced with various outside-metal borrowings, "Dead Loss" doesn't have anything in common with the word "boredom" which is actually a synonym for "stoner". The production's a bit dirty, although ok - and there's nothing I would consider a drawback when it comes to musicianship. And yeah, Piet Focroul (the singer), without any doubts, possesses a splendid voice. At least, it fits AFTERALL perfectly. Check out "A Sweet Departure" and "Fragments Of Time" - they won't leave you cold. The atmosphere AFTERALL contrived to force on "Dead Loss" is incredible. Not as grim as JACK FROST's "Gloom Rock Asylum" comes with, but AS inimitable. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

ARISE FROM THORNS
"Before An Audience Of Stars"
Dark Symphonies Records
rating: -
Wondering why didn't this CD get any mark? Well, everything's utmost simple. "Before An Audience Of Stars" appears as a re-issue of the second work by ARISE FROM THORNS, previously released on their own. Now it comes with fantastic, nearly enigmatic appearance (courtesy of Mike Riddick), as well as a couple of bonus tracks. Still craving to find out what is it alike, "musically"? Well, no problem man, let me just quote myself: " Wow… what we have here is a masterpiece - at least, it surpassed all my expectations! Unfortunately, Michelle doesn't have a perfect voice, however this time she contrived to sing in a much better way, while sometimes she sounds no less than stunning. Besides that, ARISE FROM THORNS enlarged their lineup with Chris Welborn (bass) and Tom Phillips (electric guitar (live)), and I bet they only gained by it. The music became more complicated and exciting (less straightforward, you know)… and what's most surprising, bearing the mark of rhythm'n'blues in few tracks. Well, one who have never read the review on the former CD by ARISE FROM THORNS may wonder what's their style… ok, the best description is ethereal, progressive gothic art. MADDER MORTEM, early FLOWING TEARS AND WITHERED FLOWERS, that kind of stuff." I guess, that's enough for you to get your ass off the chair and contact either the band or the label in order to get your own copy. Believe me, this one should NOT be ignored. (Herr Stalhammar)

AVERNUS
"Where The Sleeping Shadows Lie"
Cursed Productions
rating: 4,5 of 6
"Where The Sleeping Shadows Lie" is some kind of a retrospective release, compiling all the songs ever composed by this US' outfit (with an exception for their debut CD, "Of The Fallen", of course), thus being quite interesting collection. From harsh and painfully slow doom / death with a synth-crafted pseudo-violin of the early days, through DEAD CAN DANCE-inspired experimental stuff A.D. '96, and finally a weird mixture of the two abovementioned controversies A.D. '98. Taking into account the fact all the tunes appear as the well crafted ones, featuring pretty good production and fine musicianship, as well as tons of utter spiritual grimness, "Where The Sleeping Shadows Lie" might be a good gift for you. And yeah, by the way Kimberly Goss (SINERGY, ex-DIMMU BORGIR, ex-ANCIENT, ex-THERION) is the one who's responsible for the female voice on tracks 1 - 5. (Herr Stalhammar)

BLIND DOG
"The Last Adventures Of Captain Dog"
MeteorCity
rating: 4,5 of 6
Even though I'm definitely not the one getting high on stoner-rock (or how they call it…), I still keep on enjoying almost all the releases MeteorCity put out so far. "The Last Adventures Of Captain Dog" undoubtedly is one of the best CDs I've ever heard - when it comes to this genre, of course. Like it's been stated, these guys are rather close to ENTOMBED, at least regarding the approach to music. The latest works by ENTOMBED obviously is what I'm talking about, so don't get me wrong. This is NOT a death metal sort of thing, more likely a splendid mixture of Southern blend, a bit stoner, a bit hard rock, A LOT of groove and an ability of conceiving almost bewitching musical canvas. Not a single song is a failure, however the CD gets a bit boring in the end (no surprise, since it lasts for more than an hour!), thus making me to rate it with a lower mark than I expected giving a listen to such killer tunes as "Beyond My Reach". (Herr Stalhammar)

CATHARSIS
"Dea"
Irond Records
rating: 2 of 6
This is already the third work by CATHARSIS (couldn't they come up with at least A BIT less clichesque moniker…?), this time the one from Russia. Beautifully packaged, stunningly performed and brilliantly executed, this is still a failure. Wanna know why? Well, despite all the highlights I've just mentioned, "Dea" strikes as nearly worthless effort due to the fact it's solely based on plagiarism. Almost each and every note, each and every riff, each and every harmonic structure has been borrowed, making the one who gives this CD a listen to recall this or that band, as well as classical music at times. If you base your creations upon someone else's works, could you please at least indicate where have you taken this or that from? Nope. Despite that all the guys in the band appear as undoubtedly skillful musicians (especially when it comes to Julia, the one behind the keyboards), "Dea" doesn't make a sense in terms of originality, innovations, or simply re-inventing anything. Even all those retro-thrash freaks appear as much more modest individuals, at least I couldn't discover such a barefaced rip offing, whilst listening to AURA NOIR or INFERNO, for instance. (Herr Stalhammar)

CHALICE
"Chronicles Of Dysphoria"
Modern Invasion Records
rating: 5,5 of 6
You know what? Love me or hate me, but I definitely get high on this kind of music, tranquil and dreamy, serene and melancholic, beautiful yet somewhat sorrowful gothic metal (?), featuring a girl with tremendously enchanting voice. Actually, it's quite strange to see this kind of band emerging from Australia, however if we have christian black metal, why can't we have CHALICE? Generally speaking, this one reminds me a lot of "Spindelsinn", the CD Kari Rueslatten made her solo debut with, as well as "Turn Loose The Swans" and "The Angel And The Dark River" by MY DYING BRIDE. Unfortunately, Shiralee's voice is not as bewitching as Kari's, however being supplemented by tremendous guitar passages and leads, as well as truly enrapturing sounds of violin, we get undoubtedly "watch out for!" kind of CD. HIGHLY recommended. (Herr Stalhammar)

CUMDEO
"The Threads Of Imagination"
R.I.P. Productions
rating: 4 of 6
As far as I remember, the former work by CUMDEO (sorry, can't recall the title) was something I liked a lot, however, when it comes to this one… Well, this is the same old thing, gothic doom / death metal, mid-paced (of course), reminiscent of ANATHEMA (of course), featuring intolerable "clean" howling or bleating-alike singing attempts (of course) and sorrowful ambiences (of course). Rather predictable kind of effort, although not necessarily repulsive. More likely, quite good one - or even "undoubtedly impressive". At least, that's what it should be considered by true doom / death metal freaks. (Herr Stalhammar)

DAWN OF DREAMS
"Eidolon"
self-released
rating: 5,5 of 6
It's been quite a while since these Austrian dudes released the second work of theirs, and finally here comes the third one. And once I gave this CD a listen, it made me wonder why the hell don't they have a record deal by the time you're reading this? DAWN OF DREAMS definitely is the kind of band deserving a worthy contract offered by a worthy label, since their unique blend of gothic-spiced melodious doom / death metal is beyond any critics. Charming yet perturbing, tremendous though still somewhat somber, hellishly ethereal (a paradox, isn't it?) sort of music, based on catchy riffing and enrapturing synth lines as well as mild growling and "clean" vocals. Contact them NOW, for "Eidolon" isn't the kind of CD to be ignored!!!

ENS COGITANS
"Heart Of The Way"
Nostradamus Records
rating: -
It seems like Italy's Seven Art Music failed to release "Heart Of The Way", didn't they? In fact, this CD has to be brought forth the light back in 1997 (four years ago, you see!), however, ironically, it's being released only now, when these guys already came up with "Re-Vision", the second work of theirs, in 2000. Nevertheless, due to the fact they established a label of their own, Nostradamus Records, and release a couple of CDs by the time you're reading this, we have a chance to get ourselves acquainted with "Heart Of The Way"… finally! This one obviously is pretty much different if we'd compare it to "Re-Vision", and actually I don't really have an idea of which one is better. They're so goddamn different, y'know. "Heart Of The Way" is comprised of six tunes which seemingly last for eternity, but simultaneously don't have anything in common with the notion of boredom. So what is it, style-wise? Ok, what about the following words: "progressive", "gothic", "doom" and "thrash metal"? Try to mix MEKONG DELTA, DEATHROW, ANATHEMA (circa "Eternity"), KOROVA and… DEAD CAN DANCE into one… and no, you won't get ENS COGITANS, but something that could be this band. Generally speaking, just like all the works by Oleg / Sergey and E.C., this one is nearly indescribable, yet definitely the one to be listened to. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

ENTWINE
"Gone"
Spinefarm Records
(provided by Fono Records)
rating: 6 of 6
Do we really need a substitute for HIM, if H(is) I(nfernal) M(ajesty) still are doubtlessly capable of kicking ass? Well, my answer is "yes" - and simultaneously "no". HIM are, beyond any doubts, one of the most stunning bands of Finnish origin I've ever heard, however it seems like ENTWINE managed to come up with no less killer work. I was lucky enough to enjoy the CD they made their debut with, and let me admit that, even if "The Treasures Within Hearts" was the kind of offering I usually get high on, "Gone" is comparable to the best sex you ever had in your life. Each songs makes me spiritually ecstatic, especially when it comes to this effort's doubtless highlights, "Snow White Suicide" and "Silence Is Killing Me". Mika's voice sounds almost identical to Ville's (HIM), and yes, of course, the lyrics mostly deal with suicidal matters, but why not? BLACK LEAGUE, SENTENCED, HIM… and ENTWINE - this is what I consider the elite of the Finland's metal / goth scene.
If you can't find this CD being sold at the music store nearby but nevertheless still interested in purchasing it, email Fono Records at <metal@fono.ru> or check out their official website at <www.fono.ru> (this concerns only those who reside in Russia and CIS States, though).

ETERNAL SADNESS
"Set My Soul On Fire"
self-released
rating: 6 of 6
Once I've heard "Elation", the CD these guys made their debut with, I fell in love with this band, therefore I was obviously glad when Wolfgang (guitars, vocals) finally shipped me this work, the latest one by ETERNAL SADNESS - and also the last one. Unfortunately this quintet ceased to exist, and that makes me wonder why do all those copycats keep on producing incredible crap, whilst talented and (mostly) unsigned acts cease into oblivion…? What the hell is this world coming to, somebody tell me?! Anyway, it's not really what we should talk about here. "Set My Soul On Fire" comes with five tracks of undoubtedly stunning cross between soft heavy metal and goth / dark wave stuff. In fact, structurally this MCD is almost a pop one, however it's not the case when I cavil at commercial (or pseudo commercial) aspects. Four out of five guys sing, and surprisingly no one of them fails. In fact, I can't find any single drawback here - or perhaps I just don't want to do it…? Nevertheless, with such tracks as "Set My Soul On Fire" and "As I Lay", this work is SHOULD BE listened to, and adored.

GRIMEGOD
"With Broken Wings"
Bestial Records
rating: 4,5 of 6 (Kai M.Stalhammar)
        5 of 6 (Felix A.Stalhammar)
At last! The human tragedy was beheld. Entered was the realm of universal sorrow, for we are the ones destined to unveil the very essence the mankind always considered to be a paradise. But is it what we were looking for, craving for, dreaming of? What's the difference, afterall. Heaven or hell, real or surreal. Doesn't matter what language you speak, doesn't matter where you come from, doesn't matter if you BELIEVE or not. Music. Yes, music is what I'd name the perfect revealer of what is hidden within our darkest spiritual caverns. "With Broken Wings" is the perfect title, seemingly exposing the essential art. And if only this piece didn't feature poorly programmed drummachine and wasn't that trivial at times, I'd consider it a doom metal perfection.

HAVAYOTH
"His Creation Reversed"
Hammerheart Records
rating: 5,5 of 6
Incredibly impressive piece of ethereal yet sublime and somewhat perturbing gothic / dark wave kind of music. HAVAYOTH are no newcomers in the scene, since the band is comprised of ANCIENT WISDOM and VINTERSORG members. Hence, the top quality's guaranteed, don't you think so? Serene, atmospheric, tremendous, supplemented with Mr. Hedlund's inimitable baritone and excellently programmed drumset, as well as floating synthetic ambiences… ah, this is a must to have! (Herr Stalhammar)

JACK FROST
"Gloom Rock Asylum"
Serenades Records
rating: 6 of 6
Serenades Records have always been known for releasing brilliant works, and here comes one more of a kind. After three albums unleashed via CCP Records and almost non-existent promotional campaign, this quartet finally got a deal they deserve. So what is it, musically? Hard to say. Actually, the album's title seems to be the perfect definition for JACK FROST's kind of art. It's INCREDIBLY grim and sorrowful, depressive and anxious, gloomy and somber, dark and bitter - and most of all, IRREPARABLE. A synonym for inconsolable grief, a sound personification of all that is dismal, an equivalent for suicide. "Gloom Rock Asylum" captures inimitable atmosphere, and along with Phred's unique baritone, it appears as… yes, a (once again) unique work. You haven't heard anything darker, believe me. At least, ESOTERIC is no grimmer than Britney Spears, if comparing to JACK FROST. Furthermore, they have perfected their sound, whilst "California Dreamin'" cover couldn't be more stunning, that's for sure! Doesn't really matter what kind of music you get high on, be it black, doom or death metal, gothic / dark wave or experimental, GET THIS CD NOW!!! (Herr Stalhammar)

NATAS / DRAGONAUTA
Split CD
Icarus Music
rating: -
Stoner from Argentina?! Yuck! That gives me creeps. What's next? Black metal from Congo…? Penguin rap…? Anyway, this is just music and Argentina is a rather nice country, so what the hell… Both bands deliver pretty much the same kind of stuff, to be exact: splendidly crafted kind of "stoner" (rock? metal?), whilst one taking a look at DRAGONAUTA's pic, would definitely consider himself returning back to '70ties. What else. NATAS is more enjoyable musically (and atmospherically), perhaps due to the genuine Hammond's supplementation (give a listen to the fifth track… isn't it a killer?), however no one would ever make me to drag another band into shit, just because they're less versatile and controversial. I'm not a fan of stoner, that's why this review comes with no mark. Decide yourselves. If you like this kind of music, NATAS and DRAGONAUTA should be your choice. And one more thing: I'm pleasantly surprised that more and more countries previously considered "exotic" give birth to more and more exciting bands… (Herr Stalhammar)

NEOTRUTH
"32'42" Short Infinity"
Valiant Music Productions
rating: 4 of 6
Rather enjoyable piece of atmospheric doom / death, indeed. I always preferred to have a couple of beers in the bar whilst they were performing live, however it seems like I kinda like this CD, even though it's not a masterpiece. Mid-paced, atmospheric, synth-spiced doomy death metal in the vein of ABSURD EXISTENCE and CALLENISH CIRCLE, with few stunning passages here and there, as well as a singer with a natural born talent to growl the way vocal lines get stuck in your mind at least for a while. Pretty well executed and performed, this work doesn't appear as "a must to have", however nor it is the one you should ignore.

NORDREAM
"Memories Progression"
Valiant Music Productions
rating: 5,5 of 6
As far as I recall, I nearly dragged their promo tape into shit whilst reviewing it, and what the hell is that, I fell in love with this CD! Actually, it's the same material as their promo came with, although it sounds somehow different. Don't really know if I'm capable of explaining such a metamorphosis when it comes to my opinion on the NORDREAM's works, so let's just skip this subject. "Memories Progression" is comprised of nine tracks of what could be barely described as metal fusion, kinda cross between dark wave, doom and heavy metal, undoubtedly original and somewhat even innovative. At least, one would never confuse this band with anyone else. Slightly spiced with synth lines sown throughout the album, "Memories Progression" appears as incredibly versatile work, for no tune makes your bored. The sound execution is no less brilliant as the whole musical canvas, and so does the musicianship. This CD didn't get the highest mark due to one and only reason: vocals. Unfortunately, Oleg Alimov (ENS COGITANS / OVERSUN) didn't succeed in elaborating his vocal skills, and while both "Re-Vision" by ENS COGITANS and the latest effort brought forth the light by OVERSUN, featured pretty enjoyable singing, this one doesn't. Nevertheless, it's not really a drawback, more likely an issue to be improved. I bet, these guys have a bright future ahead…

NOVEMBERS DOOM
"The Knowing"
Dark Symphonies Records
rating: 5 of 6
Ah, I wish I could return into the year of 1995, to drown myself in those enchanting sounds of "Amid It's Hallowed Mirth" for one more time, even it is the last one… But enough reveries - it's 30th of December 2000 at the moment, and NOVEMBERS DOOM latest offering in the shape of "The Knowing" CD spins in my stereo. Well… Unfortunately, that unique mixture of heartrending brutality and violent melancholy seemed to cease into the oblivion, however NOVEMBERS DOOM haven't endured a regress as I expected it to be. Don't know what about lyrical part, but musically it's the kind of music which is definitely rarely met nowadays, i.e. gothic-spiced doom / death it's best. "Lovely despair" must be the best description of what you'd feel once giving this CD a listen. A bit artificial, but still hauntingly passionate, multilayered, intelligent - this is what came to my mind after getting myself acquainted with "The Knowing". Not it is an absolute truth, but AS close to it. (Herr Stalhammar)

ODES OF ECSTASY
"Deceitful Melody"
The End Records
rating: 5 of 6
I believe, all of you know what we should expect from The End Records as well as Greece's ODES OF ECSTASY. Would you like to make a guess? Yes, you! What? "Artfully blended piece of ethereal uniqueness"? Well… yes. "The kind of work fully spiced with compositional bewitchment and fascinating harmonies, barely reminiscent of gothic doom / death-genre"? Exactly. This time it's even more elaborated and way better thoughtout, featuring undoubtedly much more exciting female voice. Christina definitely didn't spend her spare time in vain. What astonishes me a bit, is one of the tunes off "Deceitful Melody", heavily reminding me of SEPTIC FLESH's pseudo-orchestral experimentation ("Tartaros" off "Ophidian Wheel" and almost all the tracks off "Fallen Temple"). However, it's so well done, so stunning, that any kind of comparisons are easily buried and forgotten. And finally, believe me or not, I prefer ODES OF ECSTASY over SEPTIC FLESH. I guess that's enough to make you understand what kind of CD we're dealing with here... (Herr Stalhammar)

RA
"Sinnocence"
Tribal Productions
rating: 6 of 6
This is definitely the kind of work with no single point I could possibly cavil at. For those who still do not know, RA appears as a side-project led by Andrei Rusu (a.k.a. Vlad), the one who's most known due to his participation in AGATHODAIMON. This time he took over guitar parts, whilst Byron is the one to sing (and that was definitely a wise decision!). Musically this is some kind of dark wave, resembling of the latest CD by AUTUMNBLAZE, KATATONIA's "Tonight Decision" as well as PROMETHEAN, although atmospherically it's more serene and romantic, standing quite far away from anything pertinent to the notion of "depressive". Generally speaking, this is a bit dreamy piece, coming with excellent synth-lines and arrangements (+ few samples put in exactly where they should be), even though "Sinnocence" is more or less guitar-based effort. By the way, Vlad surprisingly turned out as a skillful guitarist - in fact, the same goes for the rhythm-section. Being versatile and memorable, sometimes heavy, sometimes almost pop-structured, this work also features lotsa innovative ideas, thus turning into the sort of CD you HAVE TO check out.

RAIN FELL WITHIN
"Believe"
Dark Symphonies Records
rating: 5,5 of 6
Oh… This one completely blew me away, man! Being comprised of five (rather long) tracks, "Believe" might be the best work I've ever got myself acquainted with so far, at least when it comes to gothic / doom / whatsoever genres. To start with, I guess I have to mention fantastic yet rather unpretentious appearance, the one which perfectly accompanies the unique ambiences this CD is soaked with. Musically, RAIN FELL WITHIN (nice moniker, by the way) deliver tremendously celestial kind of stuff, pretty much similar to the "Solar Lovers" CD by CELESTIAL SEASON, although still hugely different. At least, once you've heard this band, you'd never confuse them with anyone else. Dreamy and serene, yet strangely perturbing at times, atmospherically just unique - this is what RAIN FELL WITHIN is all about. Musically. When it comes to vocal department… ah, Dawn's voice still gives me creeps (in the finest sense of the word, of course). Her (classically trained?) soprano is beyond any comparisons. I haven't ever heard such a beautiful and emotionally enrapturing voice… Give this CD (and "The Sun In My Wound" as well as "Sorrow Becomes Me", in particular) a listen and you'd definitely be of the same opinion. Lastly, how couldn't I mention the lyrical canvas?? Me, fool! Ms. Smith undoubtedly have a stunning poetic potential, since her lyrics are no less astounding than her voice. The only drawback here goes for rather average sound execution, but who cares anyway?! A MUST!!! (Herr Stalhammar)

SEASON OF MOURNING
"In Praise Of The Dark"
self-released
rating: 3 of 6
How many times was you utterly disappointed because of the crappy sound execution spoiling the musical canvas' perception? At least, now it's me who's disappointed. This self-financed CD appears as a debut one by this US-based act, coming with five songs of sorrowful, bitter, somewhat agonizing yet romantic and nearly tremendous gothic doom / dark metal, with both male and female vocals (the "clean" ones, of course). The musicianship is ok, the atmosphere - inimitable, but it's the sound which doesn't let the listener enjoy this piece, goddammit… Otherwise, "In Praise Of The Dark" could have been reviewed in a much more positive way (thus getting a better mark). But while now… sorry, guys. Find a proper studio.

SENTENCED
"Crimson"
Century Media
rating: 5,5 of 6
"No More Beating As One", "Dead Moon Rising", "With Bitterness And Joy"… These are the most splendorous tunes off "Crimson", the CD which proves that SENTENCED is one of the best metal acts ever emerged from Finland, for one more time. Actually, this album strikes as much more memorable and intriguing in comparison to it's predecessor. Still dark, still tremendous, still fitting all the highest standards, still inimitably atmospheric… and still METAL. This is not really a review, as you see, but more likely my own view on SENTENCED and their way in music… BUY THIS ONE. (Herr Stalhammar)

SPECTER
"Images Of The Innocent"
Valiant Music Productions
rating: 5,5 of 6
If there was such a genre as "progressive dark wave", this is what it would sound alike. "Images…" appear as almost a unique, genuine and finest mixture of goth, dark wave, art rock and power metal (ah, thank gods, this time we have a good singer with a fine English pronunciation!). What makes this CD different (besides it's originality), is the exceptional musicianship, as well as the fact that structurally it's incredibly exciting piece. These guys definitely have the potential to become Russia's leading star when it comes to both, dark wave and power metal, genres. Emotional and memorable, enrapturing and fascinating, perfectly executed and performed, unbelievably innovative… Hey, what else do you need??

THE DRIFT
"Timetwister"

rating: -
Oh man, I simply can't figure out what kind of mark should I rate the CD with, listening to the works like this. This young Dutch combo delivers extremely weird although somewhat bewitching music, and it's goddamn difficult to reckon "Timetwister" to any existing genre. Based on acoustics, piano, precise drumming and stunning bass lines, as well as almost delirious yet truly emotional kind of singing, this recording is not for the weak trendy ears, that's for sure. Perhaps, ARISE FROM THORNS (R.I.P.) is the only band THE DRIFT can be hardly compared to. Well, this is not even a CD. It's a box of hash.

THE VENUS FLY TRAP
"Metamorfozy"
Black Orchid Productions
rating: 0 of 6
Gothic rock, you see. I wouldn't ever assert that I get high on this kind of stuff, although I like few acts which may be reckoned to this genre. THE VENUS FLY TRAP is not one of them, anyway. This is just SO FUCKING BORING!!! Even if "Metamorfozy" is pretty variable work, it seems to last for eternity… and no, it didn't lull me to sleep or whatever. The problem is, it's a synonym for "headache". Sorry guys. If you want your tape back, you'll get it. (Herr Stalhammar)

THE VENUS FLY TRAP
"The Best For Russia"
Blacksmith Productions
rating: 3,5 of 6
This is sort of a compilation intended exclusively for the Russian market, and I must confess, most of the songs off this tape appear as much more impressive than the ones off "Metamorfozy". At least, "Lifeforce", "Herotic" and "Weep Hotel". Sometimes riffing (as well as few hooks) is just killer, whilst vocally it's still rather annoying - you know, Alex's (I guess he's the one responsible for vocals?) voice fits this kind of music perfectly, nevertheless I'm still of the same opinion. I CANNOT STAND THIS BLEATING. But back to the best sides this MC has to offer - among diversity, I'd also like to admit the astounding (and seemingly "live") drumming. Generally speaking, this is a good compilation… for those who're into gothic rock. Others shouldn't bother.

THE VENUS FLY TRAP
"LUND TIdS"
Blacksmith Productions
rating: 4 of 6
Oh no, there're two more works by THE VENUS FLY TRAP still left to be reviewed…!!! When it comes to "LUND TIdS", this album most probably is the best one ever brought forth the light by these English dudes (perhaps due to the fact it's dated back to the year of 1994?), stylistically also being much more diversified: f.ex., "Crocodile" sounds almost like a weird yet brilliantly structured mixture of art and jazz rock, with a truly astounding rhythm-section, whilst "Storm Clouds Are Gathering" is a semi-ballad with brilliant refrain. Stunningly emotional and almost enrapturing, y'know… What else… "Urbal Spawl" also appears as a certain ballad-alike tune (this time without "semi" prefix), "Moscow Menagerie" is a fine track as well (surprisingly featuring a phrase spoken in Russian). As to all the other songs off this MC, they've literally left me cold. Ok, summing up, let me repeat myself and state that "LUND TIdS" is the best work THE VENUS FLY TRAP have managed to come up with. DO NOT purchase it unless you're a gothic rock admirer, though. THE VENUS FLY TRAP
"Dark Amour"
Blacksmith Productions
rating: 3,5 of 6
You'd better check out the review on "The Best For Russia". The same kind of stuff, y'know. Maybe a bit more serene and electrified… Enough said. (Herr Stalhammar)

THIS EMPTY FLOW
"Nowafter"
Eibon Records
rating: 5 of 6
Usually I don't give any marks to the works like this one, however exceptions only prove the rule, don't they? The musical canvas THIS EMPTY FLOW brought forth the light is nearly indescribable, you see. This is some kind of a cross between PINK FLOYD, AS DIVINE GRACE and THE DOORS. Rather difficult to conceive, huh? Fortunately, it doesn't have anything to do with boredom musically (in fact, I expected that I'll be asleep in the midst of the second track… I wasn't, though). Male ("clean") vocals fit the musical canvas just perfect, being accompanied by tranquil, soothing and tremendous ambiences these guys managed to come up with. Well, it seems like Italy's Eibon Records are contriving to release outstanding (or at least, nearly outstanding) works only, don't you think so? When it comes to me, I'm impatiently awaiting their next assault (and this one regards both, the label and the band). (Herr Stalhammar)

THUNDERSTORM
"Sad Symphony"
Northwind Records
rating: 2 of 6
Definitely not my cup of tea. Slow, sorrowful doom the way CANDLEMASS did it back in 1986 (and particularly, "Epicus Doomicus Metallicus"), and what's most disgusting, CHRISTIAN doom metal (sounding like a pure stoner at times). Well ok, it's well structured, well performed and well executed, however it seems like that's not enough, since "Sad Symphony" simply puts me asleep while I'm giving it a listen. It kinda lacks the appropriate atmosphere, y'know. Nothing is terribly wrong here, you see, it's just my tastes which obviously permanently endure a certain kind of metamorphosis, therefore perhaps I'd be getting high on this CD tomorrow… but today is where we are at the moment. UNSILENCE
"Transfiguration"
self-released
rating: 5 of 6
What if I'd say that this one has been executed at Academy Studios, with synth-lines performed by Keith Appleton himself? Intrigued? Well, getting closer to the subject: UNSILENCE deliver sorrowful yet serene, "mournfully optimistic" gothic kind of doom metal, making me to recall the latest works by UK's SOLSTICE (especially when it comes to "clean" vocals (stunning!)). Musical canvas is undoubtedly tremendous and well-crafted, at least, despite that all the songs are pretty long, it didn't lull me to sleep. I fear that, since this CD is far from being versatile, if "Transfiguration" wasn't 21 but 50 minutes-long, it would be quite boring, though. Nevertheless, Andrew's voice, violin, few synth lines and excellent guitar drive, make this CD worth checking out.
P.S. Yeah yeah yeah, here we have Mr. Szpajdel responsible for designing the logo… once again. By the way, "Transfiguration's" appearance, generally speaking, is pretty fine.

WOMB / DISCIPLES OF MOCKERY
Split CD
rating: WOMB - 6 of 6
        D.O.M. - 5,5 of 6
Ok, what the hell is this?! No less than stunning split-CD, that is. Believe me. Both WOMB and DISCIPLES OF MOCKERY are comprised of ex-INCANTATION members, however these are too different acts, when it comes to musical canvas. WOMB appears as ultra-slow and ultra-brutal doom / sludge sort of stuff, very much alike first CD by THORNS OF THE CARRION and almost identical to WINTER (few passages only, though). Add inhuman growling and no guitars (replaced with two basses). Incredibly depressive, even though there're no synths incorporated. Check out "Bound, Fucked, Humiliated", "Secrete" and anxiously perturbing "Outro"; these are my faves off this effort. As to DISCIPLES OF MOCKERY… Well, it's astounding death / grind in the vein of… what? Right, INCANTATION (although even more atmospheric and less sludgy). Actually, three songs they've came up with, surprisingly sound way more brutal than "Prelude To Apocalypse" CD (the latest offering of theirs). And what about that amazingly precise drumming?? Oh man, if I just had a record label, I'd definitely sign both acts!
