Hi there, Trond!
Let's start with a usual ‘FAQ’, i.e. the question
regarding your
band’s past days… Furthermore, introduce your latest album to our readers…
- The latest news from the band is that there have been some changes among the band members in SEA OF DREAMS, and second that I have made material (music) to a new CD. I think it will be ready in a couple of week to start working with it in the studio with the band members. "Land Of Flames" is more a concert album with many long songs and with different atmosphere, but I think the listener will get there own felling and thought about the music when they listen to the CD. All I can say is that the CD is made in a positive and good attitude.
Both albums of yours were released in the shape of self-financed CD’s… Why so? Have you received any offers from either independent or major labels?
- One of the reason
that SEA OF DREAMS want to give out our 2 CD's by ourselves was that we
could work with our music without interference from others. I think the
time is come to show our quality and we hope to get a deal with a serious
and honest records company who will accept what we stand for. The most
important with music is that you are hundred percentage honest with yourself
with what you are doing. Yes, SEA OF DREAMS has got offer from serious
and not serious labels.
No doubts that
Jim has a strong and powerful voice, however why does he use falsetto so
much? I don’t know what about others among those who gave a listen to “Land
Of Flames”, but when it comes to me, this falsetto sounds truly irritating!!!
- Jim don't sing with falsetto. He use his own voice. Yes, we have got feedback from others too, but some like his voice. (Jim is no longer vocal in Sea of Dreams. He leaves the band for family and job.)
What
style do you reckon SEA OF DREAMS to, yourselves? In my view, it's some
kind of a mixture between few genres, such as power and so-called progressive
metal… Would you agree with me here?
- It's difficult for us to know what kind of style we use. It's up to each listener what they get out off it. (In SEA OF DREAMS we have one rule: "- no rules-".)
Am I mistaken or do you really teach rock music at school? Few years ago it was really hard to believe that rock music will appear as one of the subjects at the secondary or high school…!
- No, you are not
mistaken. I really teach rock music at school and I'm very proud of that
some of my earlier students have been well known names in different kind
of styles around the world.
What about Star
Studio? Are you pleased with the “Land Of Flames” outcome in terms of sound?
Furthermore, IN THE WOODS… recorded few of their albums at that place,
hence here comes the question concerning your attitude to black metal horde
your country is well known by…
- Star Studio is owned by my parents. I'm pleased with the sound in "Land Of Flames". I suppose you will never be hundred percentage satisfied with your own production because it's a long process. You begin with the music in your head, then the music shall be realised, after late the recording, so I think we do the best we could at the moment. It's a lot more easier to be producer for other band. Yes, I have been producer for IN THE WOODS twice. They are really great guys. About the black metal scene in Norway. There are both positive and negative sides. For they who play music and live for it, it's positive. The negative part comes when they put the images before the music.
As we discussed black metal in the previous question, lets, therefore, broach the subject of religion… What is your personal view on it? Do you adhere to any of it’ forms?
- Personal I'm not
add to any kind of religion, but I believe that we have been born on this
planet to do the best out of our life in a positive way.
What kind of feedback
did you receive in Norway? Is it hard to play the kind of music as you
play in a State which spawns enormous number of black metal acts?
- It has been hard, but now the market is growing and even the black metal scene has been more progressive.
What kind of emotions should we gain by listening SEA OF DREAMS? Do they have to be positive or, perhaps, everything’s quite the contrary? Is it melancholy or joy…?
- All of them, but mostly your own.
Do you know anything regarding Russia? What is your attitude to the country of mine as well as it’s people? Any Russian bands you’ve heard lately?
- I don't really know so much about Russia more then I see and hear from TV, but I know we live in the same world. For me there is no limits and border line. Every human being are unique and stand alike. You ask me about Russian music. Yes, I love your ethnic folk music. I remember a band with the name GORKY PARK (who I have one of their record).
Thanx a lot for answering this interview, Trond… Do you have anything left to say for the end? If so, go on!
- Well, I hope that your readers are melodic / progressive music lovers and look forward to visit Russia if we can get a opportunity some time.
